That was about as much fun as changing strings.
can help on some guitars with certain floating bridges...but for most guitars....nothing beats the slotted 'vintage' tuners...so fast/easy to change...and reuse if needed.
Can´t understand why not every guitar has them. All tuners hold tune well anyway. And I always cut my fingers on the string stump on locking and regular tuners.
Vintage tuners are the best... love them...
You can't be serious Landon. That's not how you use locking tuners. Align the tuner with the string. Pull it tight. Tighten the screw. Cut the string and tune. It only takes about 1/2 a turn.
When I installed Sperzel Tuners for the first time I called tech support at the company and asked how to do the install and entire setup - how to install strings too - everything. This avoided dumb dumb newbie mistakes so the result is I am a happy camper. 😃
He can string it ANY way he wishes! Stop with the egg sucking lessons!
it makes no difference,
ruclips.net/video/iDv8RCczpfk/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=1598
He did align the strings. It wasn’t perfect but it’s fine. One of the great things about locking tuners is that it creates a larger margin of error where you can slide your strings in any random somewhat disorganized way and it’s fine.
I pull the strings as tight as possible then tighten the locking knob. Pull the strings into a 90 and snip. Less than a half wrap and it's in tune.
Do Australians have to wind strings upside down or down under? 🎸
Like an Aussie kiss. The same action just given "down under ".
I have them on my Ultra Luxe Telecaster and Ultra Stratocaster. Quick and easy string changes.😀
I was waiting for a joke snuck into your helpful and informative video. You've changed, Landon. Ever since you got the incredibly comfy chairs sponsorship your Canadian snark has been cut in half. 🤣🤘
The only thing changed, the strings.
🎸😀😝
Eh?
I have them on several guitars. They work great, I’m just lazy. I also prefer Hipshot locking tuners
Vintage tuners are still the best in my opinion. But locking tuners are a massive time saver when you’re playing out.
vintage are still my fav
I don’t change my strings often enough for the time saving to outweigh the extra weight in the headstock. They’ve made every guitar I’ve tried them on feel unbalanced. I prefer vintage tuners, but to each their own.
Interestingly the only guitar I ever had to rebalance because it was doing the neck dive thing is my Ibanez Gio DC. for an inexpensive guitar it's fantastic. And the Agathis wood is from Northern Australia.
I used to put them on everything but eventually learned how to properly string a guitar without them and now see them as unnecessary. The quality of tuners matters more to me than whether they’re locking or not.
I know they save me time. Even when I use the key crank...thing. Plus I don't get stuck in the finger nearly as much, if at all. I don't believe they help tuning stability but they sure are faster for me.
Time is our most valued resource - you don't get it back. Use it wisely. 🔥
My favorite kind of tuner is Chicken of the Sea.
COTS isn't worthy of feeding to an ally cat! I love tuna, but that crap is cat laxative! And it sucks on a guitar fretboard 😅
Meditative watching *someone else* change strings! I don't need lockers for playing style, just for convenience. I find my Fender "vintage" tuners with the hole/slot on top make stringing fast so didn't bother with lockers. But I really hate changing strings on 'regular' tuners with the bending/fiddling/finger poking, so whenever I get an SE I throw PRS lockers on it cause they're cheap. But my Gibsons with vintage Kluson remain non locker. I know I can get drop-in Kluson lockers that fit without drilling/reaming but they are pretty pricey. But this vid reminds me of the benefit.
I put locking tuners on a bunch of my guitars and they work fine, no problems. Recently, though, I've switched over to kluson vintage split post tuners and I'm much happier with those.
They're a time saver for sure. Don't know if it's THAT much of a difference in tuning stability compared to a well-done restring (propper wrapping technique, etc.) on normal tuners though.
I have locking tuners on most of my guitars and prefer them to anything else. Some are planet waves and Hipshot. Both work great.
Same here, same brand's. Love both but I have them professionally installed with strings for the first time.
I’ve installed several different kinds and they all work well
I've only got them on one guitar (Nashville Tele) and they do keep tune very well. I like them. But then I've never had tuning issues with my Epiphones either with no locking tuners.
I never had a guitar with locking tuners.
I have always strung my guitars the pro technician way, over then under or under then over, then at least 3 to 4 wraps around the peg.
It has always been rock solid for me 👍
Same as you ! I even tried to put locking tuners in my strat, just to be mainstream I guess… I lost tuning stability. I asked a tech if I done it wrong, told me that was the proper “technique” if so. Had me change for branded ones, same issue. 🤷🏼♂️
I got back with my unbranded non-locking tuners and same method as you. Never looked back.
Oh, and it only takes me about 4 to 5 minutes more to restring. So, since I haven’t 40 guitars…
My string changes speed up on the guitars I have with locking tuners.
Very minimal additional tuning stability, very quick string changes, prone to snapping light gauge strings at the pinch point- especially during initial setup. I still like the split-head vintage tuners best for functionality.
Agreed 👍
It doesnt seem to matter too much to me. I have both and can go either way.
For some reason I can’t explain, this video had my grinding my molars to a fine dust.
you should get a mouthguard
I know. Every time I watch other people change strings, I’m reminded that I should do it myself. 😎✌🏽
I love my locking tuners. Hipshot.
I use them a lot on home builds and have retro fitted to other guitars.
I definitely do it differently to you. So kind hole with string direction. Pull as right as can, lock and tune.
This minimises the wraps around the post which is all part of the point, esp on a vibrato fitted guitar you don't want wraps causing things to not return as it was ie not to tune.
I use on non trem/vibe guitars too as quicker to restring by my method.
I have Graph Tech Ratio locking tuners on most of my guitars. They’re expensive but they’re good. To me, locking tuner were welcome technology. Changing strings simply sucks. Why not use something that’s easy. Wish they were more common on acoustics.
With locking tuners and nuts, micro adjustment tuners at bridge like on violine/fiddle are needed for adjusting string tension for tunning strings in tune.
Only had 1 guitar with lockers, and I was totally unimpressed! Changed them out for non locking Gotohs!
Hate them and find they break strings more from tuning over time. The pin that locks the string pinches the string and causes it to snap when going back and forth for regular tuning/setup. I had a brand new string on a set of locking tuners the other day break just from loosening to adjust the saddle height and re tuned it back up it never made it back to pitch. Was on guitar for 5 minutes.
I just use whatever stock tuners come on the guitar. I've had locking, non-locking, cheap, expensive. It doesn't really matter. Tuning issues are rarely the fault of the tuners; it's usually the nut, sometimes the bridge.
I have a MusicMan Axis sport with locking tuners. It's my most difficult guitar for changing strings! My tuners probably need work. The problem is, I can't get the "lock" to unlock enough to easily push the new string in. I dunno what's wrong!! Damn things
Awesome bed track! Not like the others... Massive improvement! The rhythm section in particular.
The Tele picture over your work table... where did you get that? I want one.
sperzel nonlocking tuners have been the only ones of its kind that really hold tuning and then comes vintage style with the split post.
When you're using locking tuners you gotta pull that string tight when you lock it down! It helps keep your strings in tune as well the less turns you need to make.
ruclips.net/video/iDv8RCczpfk/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=1598
I had two guitars with locking tuners, they were great, no problems. They tend to have a finer gear ratio than most. That is why I really liked them. They probably are not good for down tuning or some alt tuning.
Love my hipshot locking tuners. 🔒 unfortunately, that set can't be used again once cut. If you change strings a lot and or don't like wrapping them several times, this is for you. I work on guitar's so I do rapid changes. I can install a set of mine and cut the work in half. More stable too.
I was an old man before I ever got locking tuners. To me they are amazing!!
I prefer the original Fender safety tuners. However, for a guitar with a lighter neck the mass of the big Gotoh lock wheels can help balance things out.
I put a B5 on my Revstar and changing strings is much less aggravating since installing Hipshot open gear lockers.
With the standard tuners on my acoustics I will contine to piss off the masses by using the fold over "knot" technique. I'm the only person who changes my strings anyway.
My last thought is that locking tuners do nothing to improve tuning stability over standard tuners - make yout nut slots as slick as possible, or get a locking nut. 😁🤘🏻
So nice to be watching and not doing.😎
Thanks for showing how locking tuners work Landon as I have a USA Strat and wanted to swap its original tuners for Fender locking tuners but the music shop told me you don't need to do that on a Strat as the tuners are good enough already, but I often still wondered about it as my strat does go out of tune after a while. I bought a Marlin Sidewinder Strat back in 1987 that has a locking bar across all strings, and that pretty much stays in tune all the time.
The tuners is not the problem, otherwise you would notice it faster. Prob the nut or setup.
Get it into your techs shop. You sound like you have neck & other issues.
Would have gone faster if you hadn't set the locking mech twice on each string.
The real advantage is not just changing it. It even works when just putting the same strings back. Holding the tune is not what they should have advertised because it not accurate statement
If you plan on changing tunings like I do, you need to leave more wraps for slack to tune up or down. This makes the argument of just sticking the string through and tuning meaningless. I do have a set of Graphtech Ratio locking tuners on my Les Paul and I like them just fine though. I find the String Butler a far more useful device for keeping that guitar in tune though.
If it doesn't have vintage Fender tuners, I switch to locking ones. Fewer wraps help to stay in tune.
I thank it's easier. The question is it myth or truth that they prevent the strings from slipping when using a Bixby or wiggle stick
Yes.
I think the biggest scam is the lame tools they try to sell you. Get a good pair of side cutters or diagonal cutters ( what ever you what to call them ) and be on your way.
Do they inhibit ability to do alternative tunings?
Do the strings stay in tune?
Best tooners I’ve ever had. 👍😎
There is no yes or no response to the question of locking tuners.I know the guitarists I play with have the locking tuners on some guitars, others do not. Individual players will have differing thoughts on the overall worth of the things. At least that's been my experiance ad a bassist.
They certainly don't work with a bigsby! But way easier to change strings. I think.
I trimmed the strings closer, you are asking for an owey.
My question is, what song is that playing? It's a great song.
I will always pay for convenience
I switched back to vintage split shaft tuners. Locking tuners are heavy, look funky, have little space between tuning pegs for fingers and save little time in string changes. Did I mention how heavy they are….Definitely a fad.
you may prefer the locking tuners on this guitar: ruclips.net/video/y6bhA6fkeME/видео.html
When using locking tuners...no slack needed. Pull the string and lock it. Excessive wraps cause tuning instability. If I am not conditioning the fretboard or polishing frets, do 1 string at a time.
I've had no issues
ruclips.net/video/iDv8RCczpfk/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=1598
scam of hell. Give me the vintage tuners, aesthetics > Gimmick
i think your nut for your a string tuner is loose. it was wabblin around
You heard wrong. Locking tuners work.
That’s what I’m hearing
did you hear this from people who have no clue what locking tuners are and what they do? seems like the case ,because there is next to no way they wouldn't do what the are intended for .
Which is what for you?
If you have a "Tremolo/Vibrato" bridge guitar that WON"T STAY IN TUNE (typical Strat), yes they are essential. For every other guitar, No/
Locking tuners. Their name leads to misconceptions and they aren't what you think . But they aren't important either.
Yes, they work & sorry, no thumbs up or down for such an elementary topic. They work great Landon if you install the strings correctly. Rookie mistake.
Dude have u ever changed strings with locking tuners b4. So many unnecessary actions. There is only supposed to be maybe a quarter turn on the posts, almost no wind at all. All this stuff ur doing makes no sense at all. Line up the tuners so the string goes in the hole nice and easy and then fucking pull on the string so it’s nice and tight no looseness at all. There is no reason to pull the string back or leave any slack whatsoever. It’s locking no winds are needed. There should only be like a quarter turn on the post. No where near a full wrap. It shouldn’t even be half wrapped. That means u had to much slack when putting the string through the post. Just look up any video that properly shows u how to string up a guitar with Locking Tuners.
Tell him HOW to suck EGGS why don't ya?
ruclips.net/video/iDv8RCczpfk/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=1598
You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.
I can
No locking tuners on tele or Les Paul, or any guitar with a locking nut. The guitar that benefits the most is the strat, because the string does not unwind from the tuner post when you use the trem.
😳😉
First time Mr. Bailey..??
That was painful to watch.

Locking tuners have been a god send IMO. String change is fast and better tuning stability
Yawwwwwwwwnn😗
bed time!
Locking tuners on everything.
Except guitars.
Kids.
Or the dog.
I put locking tuners on cereal.

I hate changing strings. Locking tuners make it easier. Quicker? Probably not. Tuning stability? Probably not. But for the benefit of push string through, tighten wheel, snip and tune I thinks they're worth it. Not watching a video of you changing strings! Appreciate how well filmed it may be, I hate changing strings...
I don’t get the locking tuners thing…and stainless steel frets…apparently everyone is wearing out their frets….except me🫤
Ditto. Nearly every RUclips demo/review of every guitar at any price point and there's some nerd in the comments "should come with locking tuners and stainless frets for that price". A straw poll of guitar playing friends who've all played for decades, 20+ guitars and only 1 ever needed a refret (and that was bought second hand at 20 years old). I think people just invent anti-GAS justifications to untempt themselves from buying lol.
@@PaulCooksStuff …hahaha…agreed…you are too cool my man
