stock configuration wirh ESS card produces a wide and deep soundstage. when i compared directly with the chord mojo2, the XD-05 Pro had a wider and deeper soundstage in headphone mode. the moju2, which is unequivocally better as a DAC in line out mode, regained some ground. mojo2 has better, more natural tonal density and texture but the XD-05 Pro is more dynamic, faster, wider and deeper. vocals and instruments are pushed out further to generate more air and space.
I'm surprised to read this because the ESS sound was very flat (staging) to my ears. What headphones/earphones were you using?

Thanks for the review! I have the XD05 Plus and I think it's pretty amazing, better than many desktop amps. I also have the XDuoo XP-2, which served me well for 7 years now, and I only just recently replaced it with the BTR7, which performs better technically (for instance it has a much better SNR and better layering). Overall, I like the XDuoo brand and always consider their products an option when looking for an upgrade/sidegrade.

It’s interesting eh, when even though you have much higher end gear, sometimes real joy, fun and excitement can be found in using something as simple as a dongle Dac. It’s nice actually, because it reminds you how to appreciate the higher end stuff when you’re in the frame of mind for that. I found this helpful, useful and the enthusiasm is infectious 😃

I bought this last week with the add on AKM DAC. I held off on the Mojo 2 and went for this one. I may try and get the Hugo 2 or wait and just enjoy this one until a newer Hugo comes out some day. My current desk DAC / AMP is the RME ADI 2/4 and Apogee Groove for portable. I'm going to use the XD-05 for headphones away from my main desk. I won't walk around with it or go jogging LOL. When I need to take my Mac Pro somewhere or in another room this is what I'm going to use. I'll have it plugged in most of the time. Headphones are LCD-5, MM-500, Focal Stellia, Clear MG pros, Aryas, ST1990, 1770 for the main sets. I want analytical but a great headphone amp to get the most out of the headphones. Thank You so much for all the information. You're the best.
Sounds like I ned to save up and get the Hugo 2. They have about the same portability. I'll still hold on to this item and maybe even better amps and DAC;s will come out in the future.

@@Soundoverload It's delayed shipping for another week. I don't have it yet. I have high hopes for it and it should be a big step up from the Groove and maybe even the RME. I will hopefully receive it soon.

Very interesting you found the Mojo 2 to be better. Just proves sound is extremely subjective. In my experience the XD05 Pro in stock mode, ESS and OPA op-amps is ahead in terms of technicalities. Larger staging, much more dynamics, better detail and overall much more nicer resolution. The Mojo 2 has slightly lusher tone and overall a warmer more relaxed sound. Felt lacking in soundstage and depth when compared to the XD05 Pro though. Some people seem to have been having strange issues lately with the XD05 Pro. Hissing, sound being muddy or not clear. The amp section not working properly and having a drop in power. I'm not sure, but from my experience and other people, the XD05 Pro should be ahead from the Mojo 2. Especially with the Sparkos upgrade in which I can say, the Mojo 2 isn't even close. I love the Mojo 2 for its portability and it's a beast at that, being able to be small and give big sound. But compared to the XD05 Pro.... It's no match. Hmmmm 🤔. So far, I love the XD05 Pro + Sparkos. But hearing mixed reviews and impressions and issues coming up is a bit so so. I've had no issues so far and love it. But I have been on alert just in case anything strange comes up

I can't wait for the R2R modules, and the Fiio Q7 has 3 watts at 32ohms, so that's more powerful and has more accessories with it depending on where you get it from.
The R2R will be very interesting. I'd love to try the Q7 because people seem to really like it
I bought one and was super impressed with the sound using the standard ESS DAC (better than the AKM) and Sparkos op amps (Arya Organic and Empyrian II). However, the volume stopped working in 2-3 days from new (the number changes but the volume does not). Wrote to the manufacturer and they did not care at all and offered no help! I ran it it desktop turbo mode with a linear power supply which ups the power. BTW, I agree that details and textures are missing with the AKM DAC but the standard ESS DAC has all that.

great review ! that thing is a thick as a brick! regular and turbo mode are superior - the eco mode was my least fav - at least on my 32 ohm and 64 ohm XTC headphones - beast mode= Turbo

It’s a shame that you didn’t have a FiiO Q7 on hand to compare this with as they are in the same class of product.
The only thing that I’d disagree with you about is that there are a lot more headphones that need this type of power than you think! Any dynamic 300 Ohms and up benefit. A lot of planar benefit.
I'd love to have had the Q7 here to compare. I've read good things about it.
As for the power, some headphones do need more than a compact dongle can provide, but this is way beyond what everything bar Susvara, 1266 and Tungsten require. I've got a database of every headphone I've owned and/or reviewed since starting the channel and none of them need anything more than 400-500mW maximum power (i.e. RMS figures are about half that)
@@PassionforSound My answer to that is that headroom is a wonderful thing. There are a lot of headphones may sound fine on normal dongles and such but give them something that provides greater power if you want to bump them up to another level. DCA headphones (I own a couple) are a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
@@PassionforSoundcan totaly relate. Have had about 500 headphones in rhe last 20 yrs and tested another 500 that werent my own and what i learned is, that the power topic is unbelievably overrated in the community. As you said, maybe an abyss and a susvara might need beyond 1000 watts but even my 600ohms 80db phone sounds ok with a dongle that puts 15mw in it. I would say its at 90% of what it is capable if. If i drive it with 150mw its at 100%. I own more powerful amps too, but even if i drive it with 500mw it doesnt change the slightest bit anymore. I am a low to medium volume listener tho. It seems many people dont care about their hearing, regarding the insane levels some claim to listen at. A lot of the things in forums is pure psychoaccoustics. Specially in one land people still believe in the bigger the better kind of philosophy. Rediculously large tubeamps and even amps stackt to other amps and what not are sold there the most often. Mind playing tricks...
You can use taller opamps but you have to use a Mini PCIe extension card, leave the opamp module bay door open and rest the XD05 Pro on it's side or on a stand of some kind. The extension card will re-orient the opamp module so that it & any taller opamps being used are sitting outside of the unit, thereby removing any clearance issues. There's a subreddit on the XD05 Pro with pictures of people doing this with Burson opamps.

Worth noting - Roon Arc and HiBy Music Apps, have a PEQ (Parametric Equalizer) for example...
So you can tune the frequency response to whatever you like - Neutral, et cetera...

Great review once again! How did you find the sound of the XD05 Pro with the SS3602 op-amps compared to the Angel?
I think the XD-05 Pro pulls ahead with the A DAC chip and 3602 op-amps due to improve spatial cues and resolution, but it's A LOT more expensive at that point too 🙂

I don't believe that it can. There is an element of transparency that the Mojo 2 delivers over and above the XD-05 Pro and that allows for more insight into the timbre and more details about soundstage size and image placement

Anyone ever use the Grace M900 DAC / AMP? It's geared to pro audio and I wonder how good it would be compared to other options. I would assume the grace to be as transparent as possible for that price range. It looks like a nice option but seems like the DAC and tech are dated?
I haven't tried it, but Pro DACs are actually rarely as good as audiophile DACs because the pros are just getting a job done, not seeking absolute performance.

I don't think there's much truth to that and it comes from a few assumptions people have made incorrectly about power vs performance and also the fact that some systems implement gain in different ways so high gain MIGHT be more transparent on some devices. Generally, you're better off just sticking with the power and gain levels that gets you good, usable volume range.

I always use but perfect from my PC for music (no changing sample rates), but for PC audio (gaming, videos, etc.) I normally just go with 48kHz and 24-bit.

Absolutely great review. I am now considering whether I get this with the extra cards and opamps, or a bunch of different usb dongles with a topping nx7 like Akros does. My objective is to have different chips to learn and compare, for use with IEMs only. What do you think is the more versatile enjoyable option?
That's an interesting question. If you're looking to understand the different DACs better, the XD-05 Pro is probably the better bet because you're keeping everything else equal and just changing the DAC chip. With dongles, each one is designed a little bit differently.
i've been simultaneously fascinated and confused by his approach to pairing the nx7 with a variety of dongles. i've asked on more than one occasion if he can elaborate on the technical differences like soundstage, imaging, etc, but he doesn't respond. in his videos, he talks mostly about how the pairing of a certain iem and dongle produced the best synergy for his personal taste. he goes on about how much he adores the Yuki and how it has a "certain magic" that he's drawn to, but ive never really heard him explain why, from an analytical perspective. he also has a q15, which i thought would retire the dongles, but he still seems to prefer the nx7/dongle combo. i would love to know his reasoning
@@radiofreealbemuth this, he has explained recently. The nx7 is supposedly very transparent but eliminates floor noise issues. The reason he likes the q15 is the akm chip on it. He keeps other dongles around to compare between different dac chips or techs (ess, cirruslogic, 1bit, r2r etc) . I find that idea fantastic, but similar to what the xd05 does with its interchangeable opamps and dac cards
@Mastermnd1 thank you for explaining this to me. I've never used the nx7 to amplify a dongle, so it makes me curious what other effect it has on the dongle's sound signature, besides eliminating noise floor. Does it increase dynamics, soundstage, imaging, clarity, etc. The nx7 also has technical parameters of its own that can limit or enhance the dongles, so I wish he can elaborate on that chemistry aspect as well. Most people have one go-to dac that rules them all, so I find his method peculiar and interesting
It's definitely a different approach and each have their own merits. Adding a second amp (NX7) in the chain with the dongles will apply the amp's character to whatever is coming through from the dongle. This can be preferable, but also slightly reduces the influence of the upstream device (dongles). There are arguments for simplifying the source chain as much as possible to reduce small signal loss and maximise transparency, but some people also enjoy the colouration and character delivered by a multi-stop chain so it's all personal preference at that point. If the amp is of high quality (which the NX7 is, in relative terms) then It's more about preference than better or worse.

The Mojo 2 would definitely be my choice and it's EQ is brilliant so you can always pull back the treble. If you do want something a bit smoother, this XD-05 Pro could be perfect!
I recently got the xd05 plus2 for budget reasons and I feel like it really gets overshadowed by the Pro. Barely see any comparisons between them. If you ever get your hands on any of the lesser Xd05 models I would love to get your take

@TheVeganVicar that's the regular model which is quite different, I believe. No swappable cards and probably different circuit designs internally too.
I'll be glad to review the Plus if I get the chance. It's a more appropriately sized device for proper portable use and, knowing xDuoo, probably sounds great!

It would be interesting to compare the angel against the other Xduoo stuff that's closer to the 400 price range. 34:04 i have a newbie question: for the balanced 4.4 in/out in the back of the XD05 Pro, is it possible to connect it to a desktop amplifier or DAC? Or is it just for portable dongles and amps like the NX7 that you tested here? I'm assuming you used the 4.4 in/out on the XD05 Pro to connect it to the 4.4 in on the NX7. But from what I've seen, I don't think desktop DACs and Amps feature a 4.4 in/out.
Most desktop amps won't have 4.4mm in (a few do though like the EarMen CH-amp). You can buy 4.4mm to twin, 3-pin XLR cables from some custom cable makers if you want, though.

Does that mean you can connect the XD05 Pro to either a desktop DAC or Amplifier, by connecting the 4.4mm end of the cable to the XD05 Pro's 4.4 in/out, and the XLR end of the cable to either the desktop DAC's XLR output or desktop Amplifier's XLR input? And if so, will using this type of adapter affect audio quality?
That's correct. You can use the XD-05 as the DAC or as the amp depending on the cable you buy (XLR genders are different for input vs output).
The quality of cable will influence the sound a bit so I'd recommend getting a decent quality one made of high purity copper (copper litz wire is ideal)
I can't decide between this dac and the fiio m23 I know I would be mostly on my desktop. Or if I get the fiio m23 I will use it more since it more of a portable device.
That's a tough one and I haven't tried the M23 so I can't really help, but I think you'll be happy either way...

@@PassionforSound Just a comparison between both of them and found the stage to be bigger and deeper on the XDO5 pro and the seperation between the instruments and vocals. Overall I found the XDO5 pro to be slightly more refined. The Mojo 2 isn't far behind it though and for the price it is insane value. However with the fact that you can customise the sound and drive a larger pool of headphones I feel the xduoo is more appealing and as the headphones get harder to drive the gap between the 2 would be greater. I am about to try the LME op amps now. I will come back with my thoughts on those.
Unless you have an extremely picky and owner consuming headphone, the Mojo 2 really is just amazing in terms of sound quality.

Sounds like if you swap to the sparkos amp that it will cause an error in a few weeks and the unit stops working. Seems like you can only use the different amps the manufactor sells without running into issues. I hope that is not true. I don't even want to take a chance with putting in the Sparkos if it will cause an error down the road. I want that upgrade but once I receive my unit I will just swap DACs and Amps I purchased through xDuoo. Once I know for sure it's ok I will swap to a Sparkos. Did you have any issues with the unit after 2-3 weeks?
I haven't used it long term with the Sparkos. Have you read elsewhere that they cause problems?
@@PassionforSound Yes, I've read a few posts were they said the unit stopped working and all those had the same common thread. They swapped out amp for sparkos. Even swapping back the unit would not work. Even in your comments in this video there was one or two mentions of the unit not working and they swapped op amps to something other than xDuoo sells.
I have the XD05 Pro with the Sparkos op-amps installed, and my unit has been working without problems for the last 3 months or so. I had some problems at first, but then I switched to another riser for one of the op-amps, and after that the unit has been working flawlessly.

Hey P4S! Can you recommend a good DAC with autoshutoff and 4.4mm balanced? JDS ATOM2 is unfortunately not real balanced
I don't know of any with auto shut-off that are also all-in-one with headphone amp. I'm sure there are some out there, but I'm not aware of them by that feature.
Also, don't be put off by the ATOM2 (or any device) being not truly balanced as balanced headphone outputs don't really do much beyond giving higher voltage. If you're getting enough volume and you like the sound, just stick with what you have. 🙂

It really depends on the USB source device more than the receiving device. I have found the USB on this to be fine with my PC, laptop and smartphone.

Smartphones should produce less noise because they are more efficient with power usage and generate less internal noise

That's maybe possible if the battery isn't delivering a consistent 12V power level perhaps (i.e. if the LPS delivers higher voltage), but the battery should be as clean or cleaner than any LPS
The sound quality improves dramatically when you use wired connection and external power supply. For example, Arms Wide Open by Creed sounds very forward and sandwiched with instrumentals when you listen via bluetooth and battery. When you use USB to your music source and draw power from the wall and set it to turbo mode, it adds significant resolution, spacing, and soundstage depth/height.
Bluetooth in particular will always reduce sound quality so that makes sense. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
bluetooth can not do Hi Res or am I wrong?
Currently it cannot, although things get confusing because there are higher res versions of Bluetooth (e.g. aptX HD and LDAC), but these are still lossy.
There are new lossless codecs starting to become available now, but I'm not sure what the sample rate levels are.
Can i use this as a dedicated desktop dac/amp?
Absolutely. Just connect external power and flick the power switch to "EXT"
like compare with LPS and sparkos op amps with schiit bifrost/MJOLNIR how this other popular set ups, we dont see comparisons. I'm very interested in this. LPS's are important in maxing out the possibilities
Linear power supplies don't hold any benefits over a battery supply in terms of noise (batteries are the cleanest source of power) and the fact that the Mojo 2 is already better than this makes comparisons with higher end DACs and amps a bit redundant.
Mojo 2 all day long you wouldn't want to lug that thing around on the airplane when you go on holiday or on a run, it's like a old 1970's portable cassette recorder😆

I really like this product but as I’ve got the last one and at this present moment I don’t really need it. It’s also in my eyes shouldn’t be classed as portable. As it’s got a lot of power on tap and not something I really need. The only way i could see myself ever buying it is if it was half price. If you add the dac cards and op amps,it just far too much money. It’s overkill to be honest
It's definitely a pretty unique unit in terms of size and power for a "portable". I agree that it's more of a compact, battery powered desktop unit. It's great at what it's doing, but just not necessary for many.
Interesting, that the Mojo2 still outperforms a lot of newer portable devices.
Yes. It's very hard to beat the Chord DACs married with a very simple and therefore transparent output stage.
other reviewers that also usualy are trustworthy said it outperforms the mojo specially in soundstage (depth) and layering. i am still in the beginning of your review tho and havent heard yet what you will say about this comparison@@PassionforSound
Shame the Mojo 2 has the issue where it goes to full volume which nearly blows your head off. Loved the sound of it but had to send it back.
