Don Rosa had been in retirement for many years when he was approached by Tuomas for this album. He was a bit reluctant that he could do that drawing, but Tuomas talked him into it and it became a really beautiful album cover.
Donald Duck (Aku Ankka in finnish) has a special place in finns heart and Don Rosa is considered the best artist to tell the stories of Uncle Scrooge & his co. Naturally Tuomas is a big fan too and very lucky to meet Don Rosa.
It's not just the Finnish that hold Don Rosa in such a light. . . but none others have ever given his work such a wonderful tribute as Tuomas have done. Such a wonderful song.
You may enjoy checking out Tuomas' side project Auri,a trio consisting of himself,Troy Donockley and Johanna Kurkela. The music they produce is sublime and very much worth exploring.
Worth checking for besides Auri, is also Finnish song "Satojen Merien Näkijä" (~"Seeress of Hundreds of Seas") Tuomas composed for Johanna. Translation of it's lyrics could be found online.
You just know that when Tuomas is involved one way or another, its gonna be GOOD. Personally my favorite song from this project is "The Last Sled", _really_ worth a listen imo. Keep rockin' Kelly
Moon Moon yes please Kelly! react to The Last Sled! It makes me sad that nobody has reacted to this song yet, nobody literally! ... that song deserves more love it’s so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful song and album. In Kitee, Tuomas home town, a small town quite close to the Russian border in eastern Finland, in the city museum, there is a room dedicated to Nightwish. Many interesting items from the early days when Nightwish started.
Were so blessed to have Tuomas Holopainen, he is a master composer, song writer....he takes us to magical places. Again a beautiful reaction Kelly..were all children of his magical art.
Another sublime reaction. This project truly is another masterpiece from Tuomas. Just to throw a little curveball in there, you might like the music of the vocalist in this song. As several have pointed out, it’s his wife Johanna Kurkela. Her music is all in her native Finnish (though translations can be found online), but I find her voice so warm and enchanting that I fell in love with her music immediately. I find when I’m looking for something mellow, her songs have a very calming effect. Rakkauslaulu (translation: Love Song) would be a good song to start with. It’s absolutely beautiful. Thanks again for the reaction. I’m still in the process of checking out more videos, and I’m currently compiling a list in my head of songs I think you’d enjoy based on the reactions I’ve seen. I look forward to seeing where this musical journey takes you.
Hi Kelly, you may like the Nightwish song “Turn loose The Mermaids” by Nightwish..it’s a melancholy, personal song by Tuomas Holopainen. Below is a description which fleshes out the back story. Nightwish keyboardist and chief songwriter Tuomas Holopainen told Metal Hammer magazine how witnessing the passing away of his grandfather inspired this ballad. He explained: "One thing that I like to do is pay a little homage to certain things that I really respect - for example, the My Dying Bride album Turn Loose The Swans is one of my all-time favourites, which is why this is called 'Turn Loose The Mermaids'. It's nothing to do with My Dying Bride other than the title, but it was born in the moment when I saw my grandfather die, and my grandmother was giving him the final message. It was one of the most emotional experiences of my life - it was so dark and beautiful at the same time. I had to make a song about it - the last thing she did was check his teeth, warm his toes, and then [say] 'Good journey my love, see you soon'. She was 93 back then, and 15 minutes after, he died. I'd never seen a dead person before, and it was an emotional moment, so I wanted to do a song about it. The album's all about life and the power and beauty of imagination, and I thought that we needed to include the final chapter of life, which is death."
Hey Kelly, let me start by saying how much I like following your critiques.I have followed you since you started your Nightwish adventures and let me say I was immediately drawn to your pure and honest emotion and poet's sensibilities. You asked about Within Temptation !! I have been a huge fan since around 2006 and am totally in love with Sharon's voice. To recommend just one of their songs to cover is very difficult because of the wealth of material they have produced since 1995. Perhaps start with a simple song with just Sharon and piano called 'Forgiven' to show how outstanding a vocalist she truly is. The live version from 'The Black Symphony'is probably a good start. Sharon also produced a solo album of recent times which is well worth a listen too,"My Indigo' a very personal recording for her, relating to close personal loss and a possible cross-roads in her life and career. Hope this helps a little.
Thank you for doing this video. I am so happy that I am alive during the time that Tuomas was here. I could not imagine not being able to experience his music............ :-)
Brilliant observation! I taught visual communication and the things I noticed is how close visual and audio is in terms of relationship. You have contrast, harmony, texture, balance, brightness, clarity, tones, rhythm, form, movement, pattern, mood, scale, emphasis, clarity, distortion, etc. Everything is used to express a unique idea, emotion or story. It's a beautiful process that can either involve planning or pure spontaneity. It's a beautiful thing.
You'll want to read Don Rosa's Eisner-winning (comics equivalent of the Oscars) "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck", which treats Scrooge as a real character, with a real time-line. Full of references to actual history, from Scrooge meeting up with Theodore Roosevelt in the Dakotas to the history of mining in South Africa. Scrooge inspires Tuomas to write music. Carl Barks, who created Scrooge, inspired me to become a traveler and a writer. It's wonderful for kids, but adults will get plenty out of Barks' and Rosas' tales. Especially Don's Life and Times. There's a tragic romance that explains why Scrooge stayed a bachelor, you meet Donald Duck's parents, and so on.
non riesco a non commuovermi ascoltando questa musica, credo che tuomas sia il miglior compositore in assoluto attualmente, e apprezzo la reazione tua, kelly, che è la stessa mia di fronte a questi pezzi meravigliosi.
This whole album is absolutely amazing. You need to hear it. The Last Sled is my favorite from this album. If you like Johanna’s voice, Tuomas, Johanna, and Troy have a side project called Auria. They have just released their first album. Within Temptation haws a lot of great songs. They did a song with Tarja, the first NW vocalist called Paradise (What about us). Angels from their Black Symphony concert lis another good WT to start with too.
I love all your reactions, Kelly. The adventure includes several songs. They are all nice. It's great to hear you like northern lights because I have seen them lots of times while living in the Finnish Lapland.
Whether it be with Nightwish or flying solo, Tuomas knows where to pull one's strings. As far as Within Temptation goes, give "Paradise (What About Us?)" a go :)
What do you say it's just fabulous .......imagination and creativity is such a wonderful and powerful thing to it comes in all sorts of different ways i agree completely.....
I love imagination in fashion which i do with my motorcycle jacket vest a bit of.....steam punk.....English waistcoat pocket watch.....gothic......English punk......
Tuomas Holopainen - The Last Sled next please. You really have to see it. So beautiful song and my favorite song. And I like to hear Johanna's unique voice more.
I have longed to see reactions to this beautiful song, as it is very dear to my heart. I confess I kind of gave up long ago expecting to see it. It just wasn't going to be able to compete with Nightwish's back catalog. I can't thank you enough for doing it, Kelly.
I'm beyond thrilled to have seen this, and shared it with you. I was so taken in by the dust from the chalk, it was about creating, one of the beautiful attributes of humanity. The dusk from the chalk told it's own story in my poetic mind. : )
@@KellyDeaconKDzJOY The magic of this song gives me an overflow of the feels every time I watch it (over and over, lol). Don Rosa & Tuomas are fellow magicians weaving a spell of nostalgia. Tuomas got Don Rosa basically out of retirement to do the album art. I am madly in love with it all. Quite a shock right? haha
In interview Tuomas has said that when he read the Scrooge McDuck stories, his head was just filled with music that he wanted to record...and so he did! The whole album has been known to play on loop in my truck for weeks at a time....Love it! Within Temptation's song Faster was my portal into the Symphonic Metal, Prog Rock/Metal world. I would recommend the songs Stand My Ground, Lost, or Stairway to the Skies. atb
Nice choice, from one of my favorite CDs. I think you would enjoy the entire recording. I often think it would make an excellent soundtrack to an animated movie about Scrooge McDuck.
Thanks for reacting to this wonderful song that I also requested on over a week ago, i.e. Aug. 10th in my comment to "THE POET & THE PENDULUM (Nightwish) FIRST TIME Reaction/Commentary". I bet the others didn't mention that Tuomas is presently married to the female lead vocalist Johanna Kurkela.
I knew there was another person that mentioned this song (I came up with 3 names, but I knew there was another, maybe two others that recommended this song (it's amazing and magical).... I have you down for Turn Loose the Mermaids too. : )
Thank you Kelly you took this song! Nice reaction. Tuomas, he must be a "once in a lifetime" person. All his works (Nightwish, solo project, Auri, movie soundtrack (Kiss while your lips are still red) etc are just awesome, showing his mastery as composer or poet. Here is one interview about Tuomas and Don Rosa, pls check it out. It tells how Tuomas is making music and how they find each other and how Don Rosa reacted the whole idea and what kind of music he likes. ruclips.net/video/ErfbQxqppUA/видео.html
Tuomas solo project is absolutely fantastic. Great story. Fantastic music. And - although a completely different style of singing to Tarja or Floor...... in my opinion Johanna has the most magical voice on this planet. If she would sing the phonebook of Helsinki - it still would be magic. Great musicianship.
Within Temptation is another symphonic band with a great singer (Sharon Den Adel). They aren't all that metal anymore, but they have always shared fans with Nightwish. "The Truth Beneath the Rose" is a song that has a lot of meaning behind it. Here's link to a live version with full orchestra - ruclips.net/video/cMPQUyub9Bo/видео.html. I don't know how they are about copyrights, so you might want to pause it occasionally.
From that album, there is quite many songs available on RUclips (With nice and funny cartoon). Leading singer Johanna Kurkela (Wife of Tuomas) is also excellent singer. One example here, she sings Metalica cover "Nothing else matters" ruclips.net/video/aiIP18Mf4v0/видео.html
Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Mother Earth (Black Symphony HD 1080p) would be most symphonic. I personally like most Jillian of their songs.
Tuomas is truly a genius. That entire album is quite amazing, telling the wonderfully fun story of Scrooge McDuck. I do think you would like Auri as well. Another Toumas side project. Very much not metal either but very nice and relaxing.
I was about to suggest some Within Temptation to you and then you mentioned them :D I recommend two of my favourite songs by them: The Promise (live) ruclips.net/video/KuMB2pTsZP0/видео.html (the song starts at 1:01:10) The Truth Beneath the Rose (live Black Symphony) ruclips.net/video/cMPQUyub9Bo/видео.html (song starts at 0:30) These songs are not the most famous ones but in my opinion they combine the symphonic, emotional and beautiful side of Within Temptation best. And also listening to Tuomas' music just made me cry another time, the beauty in his music really touches me.
Great reaction again KD! Yes, you are different in a wonderful way. I think all Nightwish fans are different, We don't listen to music for the thundering drums or the blazing guitars. It is not about how heavy metal the music is. It is about the message of the song and the emotions that the music generates within us all. Nightwish does this better than any other band I have experienced. Notice how Emppu plays his part so well. He does very few guitar solo's, and most are simply done to enhance the song. He is obviously capable of much more technically superb playing, but sticks to the song and leaves his ego in his pocket. The same goes for everyone in the band. Music like everything in the universe is about vibration. All matter is in a state of vibration. Thus movement equates to existence. This is why music is such a powerful experience for all of us "different" people. Most human beings go through their daily lives totally distracted by the minutiae which surrounds them. We lucky ones are able to experience these deeper emotions and the artistic beauty, which I feel makes life worth living. What we Nightwish fans commonly refer to as a Floorgasm is technically called a "frisson". This occurs when dopamine is released in your brain, which is usually triggered by Music/Emotionally intense moments. It feels like waves of pleasure running all over your skin, also referred to as a skin orgasm. We Nightwish fans, I believe, have the capability to experience this emotional response. We truly are the LUCKY ONES. Embrace this difference. I feel sorry for the people who never experience this wonderful sensation. Creation is an Artistic endeavor. One must think and use imagination before anything comes into existence!
Magic. Recognizing it is also magic!...... Within Temptation songs? "Faster", "Shot In the Dark", "Angels", "Iron", ...... IMO anything! Live versions from Antwerp 2012.
This song gets a whole new meaning after you read the Scrooge McDuck comic books. I mean it does stand on it's own just fine but books give a little bit extra to it.
Oh! You will love Within Temptation with the amazing Sharon Den Abel! Maybe you can try with Paradise(What about us?) ft Tarja (the first singer of Nightwish). One I like a lot it's Faster. If you want know more Sharon, she did a wonderful duet with Anneke van Giersbergen ( an other amazing dutch singer), it's Somewhere. I'm sure you will love it. A bit unknow but i really love it, it's a duet with Floor Jansen. Unfortunately, it's just in audio version, it's Beyond Me.
Kelly Deacon, this is your latest reaction so I'm going to comment here. I think you should try something new and reaction wise less popular on RUclips: A Nightwish cover of Gary Moore's Over the Hills and Far Away. I honestly think it is Nightwish's one of the greatest studio recordings. Also the video is fun to watch. Tarja Turunen at her best imo.
Not that I'd suggest you to react to a song sung completely in finnish, but Tuomas Holopainen wrote a charity/fundraising song called Lohtu for a new children's hospital here in Finland. In a sense it's typical charity song : many biggest names in finnish music scene involved, it just sounds way better than other typical charity songs. And lyrics are brilliant. Sorry, long message :)
I'd love to hear it. I don't mind if it is in Finnish. I believe it will sound better. Thank you for suggesting it, and don't worry about long messages, it wasn't long anyway.
The whole album is a treat.😁😁 Concerning Within Temptation i would recomment to take a look at the song "The Promise" from their "Black symphony" concert where they were supported by a full symphonic orchestra and choir. ruclips.net/video/39k1IQoeLAU/видео.html

For me Tuomas is king Midas of music. Try Lohtu, a song Made in 2017 for help children.
just beautifull. I love "the last sled" from same album even more though. Check it out
From Within Temptation i think you should start with "Mother Earth".
I think you will enjoy that one very much Kelly.
This old man is a legend Donald duck drawer
Buy the album when you buy the book. This is song 9

merci georges.
I learned to read Donald Duck comiks at age of 4 or5 Back at 1970's
Not that I'd suggest you to react to a song sung completely in finnish, but Tuomas Holopainen wrote a charity/fundraising song called Lohtu for a new children's hospital here in Finland. In a sense it's typical charity song : many biggest names in finnish music scene involved, it just sounds way better than other typical charity songs. And lyrics are brilliant. Sorry, long message :)
I'd love to hear it. I don't mind if it is in Finnish. I believe it will sound better. Thank you for suggesting it, and don't worry about long messages, it wasn't long anyway.
@@KellyDeaconKDzJOY well, then, this is the video, here you go : ruclips.net/video/1wXjcuCikUA/видео.html
The whole album is a treat.😁😁
Concerning Within Temptation i would recomment to take a look at the song "The Promise" from their "Black symphony" concert where they were supported by a full symphonic orchestra and choir. ruclips.net/video/39k1IQoeLAU/видео.html
