This is a well done addition to your repertoire. I liked that you were balanced in your presentation by providing background and pros and con commentary.
What i like the most, is that she build this all from the stories and dreams of her childhood. Against all dificulties, or maybe because, in her country. I think with her latest lines she is still in progress. I Love the fact, that she is still the girl listning and dreaming.

Thank you so much for your immersive video on Guo Pei which includes so many pieces as they were originally presented. Mao's destruction of many embroidered masterpieces was an attempt to rid China of symbolic wealth. After his overthrow, my friend's father ( his personal ophthalmologist) was able to flee and save a few from destruction( a part of the MET collection)
I noticed those construction issues when I visited the Bowers museum as well. There were also spots where you could CLEARLY see hot glue. In a lot of ways I really appreciated it, because it made me see the dresses as an attainable goal. Like, these were made by humans, not some flawless entity that makes perfect pieces every single time. It also made me chuckle a bit like "lol, I've done that too"
Just stumbled across Guo Pei as I was looking at the website for the Palace of the Legion of Honor in S.F., and followed links to various Guo Pei videos including yours. Very well done, thanks for sharing your photos and your opinions, I will watch more of your videos!!
You did a spectacular job educating us about Guo Pei and I enjoy your light hearted style. Keep up the good work! How about covering theater and puppetry too? You have a knack for sharing the importance of extreme creativity and I’d like to see you expand to include theater, dance, and music
I have zero background in fashion or fashion history, and I loved this-please do more bios and decade lessons! It’s so much more accessible than any other way to learn.
I would love to see more of these. Very informative. I love here attitude towards fashion and how shes not worried about celebrities shes into her craft and what shes doing more than anything. This was motivating.
Loved this video. I’ve been in fashion for a long time and still learned something new here. Would love to watch more deep dives like this, especially about less “mainstream” creators. Thank you!
Excellent video. I could look at her creations all day. Sometimes i pause and enlarge to examine details. Wish i could see a collection in person. It becomes very meditative, for me, to examine the colors, shapes, textures. Also thank you for offering criticism as well as praise. You weren't dismissive or cruel, just observant. It actually made her even more human to me! I am going to look for more of her work so anyone with suggestions, please reply. You have a new subscriber, thank you again for the obvious care you put into this video
I will definitely admit that when I saw her pieces in person I did notice some frayed gems and zippers il seen but I didn’t think much of it til now because so was so blown away with the designs themselves
Hi Zoe. This is Vivek from India. My most favorite Indian designer is Manish Arora. He has been showing on Paris runways for a decade. Can you please do a review on his work.
Loved this video! I would never have thought to check things like zippers and hems when it comes to haute couture....it would be like questioning an artist like Michelangelo (something to that effect), just because of what it takes to be considered a couturier. I like though, how you show that we're all just people. We're not always perfect. And maybe that's what's most appealing about these constructions and designs, our humanity 😊👍🏻💘
This is a super video, Zoe. I love that Guo Pei's fashions are works of art and not about creations for models that look like the living dead. I have the book with the yellow dress on the back cover on an inspiration display shelf in our apparel design and sewing studio.
Thank you for your expert input regarding the quality of the garments- I also went to the exhibit at Bowers Museum and was suprised at awkward quality some of the clothing had. I just thought that's how it always was!
Dear Tr. Zoe, I would like to learn and know about Balenciaga brand and its design house. I've known that Cristóbal Balenciaga was a master of shape and form in couture world and even Christian Dior referred him, "the master of us all'. But why this famous couture house changed into the influential and sophisticated street-wears brand. I hope you will do a deep dive video about Balenciaga. Warmest regards, Winny.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for your video. I had never heard of her and I definitely should have. Like you mentioned, I never knew this level of construction existed. I was surprised to hear she's compared to Alexander McQueen, her designs just seem way more opulent, although both are/were masters of asymmetrical balance. It's amazing the difference in our goals before and after we have knowledge, I love sculptural/wearable fashion but I do want to design a bit more of a "day wear" level. I learned so much! Thank you
I was so lucky as to have seen Guo Pei’s haute couture collections at the Bowers Museum in Samar’s Ana this year for my birthday. They were absolutely breath taking
This is so amazing! I have always admired the strength of women and their beauty. This designer captures these qualities in such a unique way through her art. Thank you for introducing me to her!!! And thank you for all your hard work on your amazing videos!
This was great. Every time you put up a picture I thought I'd seen the most beautiful dress ever until the next one came up. I definitely feel the comparisons to McQueen are justified, but I she's even more extreme and I love it. I also love that you pointed out the construction, however, as it's not something I'd ever have thought of or noticed.
Zoë, you are as timely and relevant as you are talented and skilled! Thank you for all your tutorials and for your back door, backstage explorations into fashion. I love being a member of the community you are creating! 🤗 As a couture designer, I too, have mixed feelings regarding, not Guo Pei’s designs, but her construction. Design is an aesthetic...construction is a discipline. Haute couture deserves and demands a commitment to technique as much - if not more than - a commitment to design, if for no better reason than design is subjective, while construction is objective and measurable. Many thanks for your thoughtful insight! - Roxie
My fashion illustration teacher used to work for Guo, she said the amount of artisanal is incredible but the quality isn't so great. I totally get it when you're talking about the inclined zippers and the plastic decorations.
Hey zoe!!! I know ur schedule is super tight, but if ever u have time, can u do a background look to some filipino designer/s? would love to see more of these
Wow! I really appreciate this kind of video. Your opinions and information are very thorough and profound. I watched some interviews about Guo Pei in Chinese but none of them is as good as yours. Your first-hand observation of her designs is very very impressive and inspiring!
Been seeing this video on my timeline for a full day now. I have tried avoiding it because I thought, "Oh not another biography video". However this was really good hey. I love the opinion bit. You were honest without being mean. Your critique was constructive and not critical. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You are too dope darling!!!
Hi Zoe, thanks so much for making this video. I've seen videos about her impressive works. But this vid has helped me to learn more about her. Thanks. Zoe.
Thank you, your video is indeed helpful, I'm a fashion student & I have to create a collection of 5 dresses imposing the identity of Guo Pei, to be honest I've never heard of her "I'm an arab", & I'm not really into avent garde coture & I've been researching Gou Pei for a couple of days & still couldn't understand where she comes from! She left me puzzled, I mean how on earth does she come up with her mood boards lol, when I want to create a design through any fashion houses identity I need to know more about the designer or the person behind the collection.. Thank you again 💓
I understand from where the comparison with McQueen comes from BUT her designs are clearly designed by a woman I know that sounds like a mambo jambo thing to say, but yeah there's an "aura" on her dresses that shows that. Also agree on the little zippers & details critique because, its Couture .... by essence should be 10000% perfect on every way.
No, I get you, I think that too, and also about CWK's Givenchy and Iris VH, they look like a woman designed them and it's hard to articulate exactly why across the board. I occasionally will see something and think, "10 bucks says a dude designed that."
Love this new video format you are trying out! Would love to see more! Love the attention to details and facts but also a balance of your opinion based on personal experience of her stuff! Poorly done zippers are a deal breaker for me! Especially for those prices!
I love and learn so much from this video, I do not know exactly the words to express al the things I learn from you, but you a great teacher, you are clear, specific, in your presentation, honest, intelligent, on what you want to say and I like so much your point of view, you express pasión and joy and that makes me love your work or videos, Thanks so much!! Congratulation, Hugs from Mexico City!!
Great video as always! Really love how in-depth you went in this vid - very informative! Have you listening to fashion history podcast it reminded me just of that! Despite of everything mentioned in such a big fan of Guo Pei! She brings such an elegant perspective to the western ideal of dress and I hope more doors are open in the future for other international designers in the couture world in hopes of changing the very nature of what couture means in a global world. Now don’t get me wrong I love and respect the history of couture but I feel like there’s this exclusivity and lack of appreciation for other techniques of dress making from various parts of the world. West Africa has a rich tradition that I feel is on par with couture practice, Mexico and the making of the traditional flowing dresses-I could go on an on but hey maybe this could be a good video idea? Idk 🤷🏾♀️
The designs she keeps in her studio are phenomenal. Quite different to the ones she displays to the public. They have a strong Eastern influence. Apparently they are kept for very private clients & I wasn’t allowed to take photos.
I like the designers who show us their traditional art in a modern way 😻🙌🏽 Guo pei in China 🇨🇳 Naeem khan in India 🇮🇳 D&g in Italy 🇮🇹 Big love for them ✨✨ Please we need the great Elie saab for next 😻♥️♥️♥️
Have you seen the pineapple hemp pieces from her latest collection? They evoked such a strong urge in me to buy something made of such sustainable, yet exotic fabric. Of course linen is pretty similar but it ain't the same. I am simply unable to find anything made of a comparable pineapple hemp. Also any updates on the "how to design a collection" collection? Still waiting for that boro inspired coat!
