Dear Richard, I am disappointed to inform you that I recently got some tattoos to fill some spaces between some other larger pieces. I asked for some birds and some flowers/branches, I trusted my tattoo artist to find the references and decide what would look best, but I fear that Big Gull has now reached Lancashire. I went to inspect my tattoos in a mirror after the artist had finished and was horrified to find that she had used seagulls as the reference for the birds. I was mortified. Sickened. Absolutely distraught. I turned around to ask my tattoo artist what had happened and she said “Big Gull sends its regards, tell Tricky Dicky he’s next”. I am literally shaking rn and don’t know what to do. I have been permanently emblazoned with the mark of the Gull.
Y2k was a thing that did actually happen, somewhat. It was largely mitigated by patch rollouts (Sometimes even years before 2000), but it could have actually had bigger consequences if it wasn't. The way they coded dates was just 2 characters for the year. The '19' part of the display year was hard coded in, so when it rolled over to 2000 the computer would have treated it as being 1900. This can stuff up all manner of time-sensitive systems, like nuclear reactors or GPS systems. Stuff like GPS doesn't actually work if you don't have an accurate clock, and any sort of automated system would have been thrown off by the time difference. Easily avoided, but was pushed by the news because its really easy to get people to watch the news if you fearmonger stuff.
Thanks for mentioning that. I would also add that mainframe computing (used by the majority of retail, logistics and banking coprs) relies a lot on accurate time for resource sharing, virtualization and coupling. Any sort of large scale issue with those clocks would cause pretty severe global issues.
Hey rich, funnily enough, I was hiking in corsia in summer in the mountains, and also got this heat induced bloated head. I looked absolutely ridiculous for about a week, it eventually just deflated itself after a little while lmao
I just moved abroad out of the UK from a small town, away from my parents for the first time and these podcasts are really keeping me sane. As always, thanks for the great content Rich and Sam
23:45 Yep , air temperature being too high is a big issue, warmer air is less dense, provides less lift on the wings, so the required runway length for takeoff and landing goes way up... I thought you would know this as someone who flew quite a bit, but it's ok to be ignorant of some things especially when it's not your specialty. Thanks for the episode as always boys .
Seagulls here in Dublin are out of order. Bigger than small dogs and they just stroll around like they own place. Saw a lad trying to get in his car and a gull was just standing on top staring him down unmoving 😂
Riiicchhh, Just wanna say out of every content creator i've ever followed, you have continued to have the upmost intregity out of all of them. Keep up the good work, although I already know you will. O7
For context, foot and mouth disease is a major threat to our cattle industry - not so much people. Most biosecurity laws are based on quarantining diseases that effect crops and our native ecosystem since being so isolated introduced diseases can run rampant. National politics also dictates we be very loud about our bio-security policies because all the right-wing farmer parties were clutching pearls over "not protecting farmers" and wanted to shut borders entirely.
The section on the Y2K bug is a good reminder to us all that just because we are aware of the way journalists misreport technical or scientific topics they don't really understand, that doesn't mean we are immune to doing that ourselves in turn.
Seagull problem is really big, Worked and lived in Solna Sweden. There is a lake Råstasjön (special lake for bird watching) ton shit of them there, they really attack people fly over the heads. Noise levels were to much for me in the mornings.
Y2k was an issue on some of the older systems from 1970s etc. that had memorylimits to them. Because of the memorylimits, year 2000 was 00, but 00 was also pointing to 1900. Hence the issue would be that the systems would not be in sync with others when communicating in a network, as stuff like encryption works on timestamps etc. A real problem that was misrepresented in the media by not saying what era of systems it affected and didn't report properly that patches rolled out on time. This allowed grifts like y2k-certified products flood the markets, when no consumer needed them. Funny how hardware limitations back then forced lot good robust design except for those kinda limits, but now in the era of gigabytes, too many simple things are vulnerable or overconsuming hardware resources.
Funny about Australia and the biosecurity laws - I've brought back loads of stuff from overseas and when I declare it they hardly care. Had an entire backpack full of Japanese food and they didn't care after I declared it lol
I remember Y2K panic. I was like 11-12 when it first started, the media panic was on news every day, remember being a ared the world was going to grind to a halt cos of it
Hey Rich, I'm a microbiologist and honestly you will find E coli everywhere. In fact it is in your gut right now, only some specific strains are pathogenic so it highly depends on the specific strain if that guy has a case or not
I love that every episode has these ridiculous thumbnails. My first reaction always after seeing these is what the fuck. Then I am just waiting for the actual news that are tied to those pictures to get the laughs 😂
sound. My dad bought a dope SKS rifle from a coworker who bought it in preparation for Y2K. They worked at Boeing... wonder what he thought was going to happen where an SKS would be needed.
I think a one time limited cull would only do harm by galvanizing the gulls in their war on humankind. Just as Machiavelli said: "In general you must either pamper people or destroy them; harm them just a little and they’ll hit back; harm them seriously and they won’t be able to. So if you’re going to do people harm, make sure you needn’t worry about their reaction." Cull The Gull
Ngl, the gull issue has potential to cause some serious political/social unrest, especially since there’s a chorus of idiots starting to defend them now
2 consecutive episodes in such a short time. Big Gull must be furious
"Seagull shit has more dangerous bacteria than dog shit"
Bear Grylls: "That's going right up my hoop on national telly"

Welp, guess you're gonna have to deal with a permanent addiction to chips
Big gull takes another soul. Also who chooses gulls as a default for a tattoo??? XD
They are all mythical sea creatures so I guess gulls are the default bird of the sea
I am almost convinced that this did indeed happen
@@caboose2741 a tattoo is art. Art does not need explanation
I think feeding gulls is a great idea as long as that meal is designed to be their last.
Can't even feed the things a fuckin' alka seltzer tab anymore without people acting crazy.
You won't be laughing when the Hadron Collider opens a portal to the gull dimension
Underrated comment.
There needs to be a compilation of all the seagulls' stories: a video, a youtube playlist or something.
I think there is one on the clips channel
That's one way to get your channel shadowbanned by the gull lobby unfortunately.
(There's some on the side channel as stated above)
"Big Demon" had me buckled

Absolutely love Sam and Rich together, legendary duo
I don't like to sling the word "hero" around willy-nilly, but Cllr Connolly is the one we need. Cull the gulls

I've only been to the ocean 4 times and I've been attacked by gulls at least 6 times. Rare attacks my ass.
