There is something of fascinating about the constructions in Akira in the anime film but also in the manga. i like how they present a strong liminal feel, just reinforced by the neon lightnings and the retro-futuristic industrial designs, they make the emphasis on them. it's a depressing looking city , which try hard to stay alive despite being in a desolated place after a war
it really highlights how isolating and offensive mega tall buildings can be, nothing really seems designed for humans, or even for cars. it's designed for power and how that flows
The best representation of a post-apocalyptic city i’ve ever laid my eyes upon, the streets of Neo Tokyo thrive in a crazy space of liminality, from protestors looking to appeal tax reforms to the street prophet chanting AKIRAS name. While also feeling empty & shallow from the lost souls of the explosion, the city inhabits a unique form of chaotic nature, it gives me the feeling that every turn whether a street or sidewalk, will undoubtedly be filled with disorder no matter what. And i’ve yet to have that feeling be replicated in any other form of media. Not to mention the art for this movie was fucking off the rails, it took a miracle in terms of the animation team & financial money to produce a film like this during the year when the economy of Japan was at its highest, a movie with this production won’t suffice for at least another 10-15 years.

This was 8K 40 years before 8K was even a thing
I remember reading somewhere that the building designs were inspired by metabolist architecture models by Kenzo Tange. Pretty cool.
I have yet to watch this film. Looks insanely good
It's the best
As dark, dystopian, and edgy as Akira is, I can't help but Actully love How beautiful the cryberpunk Aesthetic of Neo Tokyo is
Same with Blade Runner.
This film was made before the internet become our second world
1:47 The physical format survived in that universe.
Would be such an expensive city to build. Even New York doesn't come close to this
Well it's built after WW3, and wars accelerate this sort of thing
I assume this taking place in the future with some cool new construction technology must certainly help as well.
Mega Cities incoming.. 🌃
