I'm giving my family the gift of time this year. I'm helping my dad paint his mancave, passing out flyers for my stepmom's new business and teaching my brother to cook his favorite dish that I make. They are all SO much more excited for these gifts than anything I could buy

  • @Emily-hd9sm
    @Emily-hd9sm 2 года назад +48

Tip: if shopping is something your friend group does as a hobby, e.g. going to the mall, make a game of all the things that you didn't buy - take a note each time you felt an impulse to buy something and realized why you didn't need it and feel proud of yourself later! And getting coffee and boba still are associated with waste, but I sometimes like to get these things because a) I try not to guilt myself for occasional treats and b) they give me something to hold onto and think "okay, I already bought something, nothing else for today"

One of my methods as someone who struggles a bit with buying and budgeting is without looking at the price tag, I look over the item, evaluate if I really want it and how much I'd be willing to spend on it. If it isn't that price or lower, I walk away. Often times I end up walking away and not missing the item in question. This is usually clothes which are kinda on a do not buy list but I'm also working on replacing a few pieces that I've had for years and are falling apart and unfixable. I sew, so now they're scrap fabric :)

This is a really good idea. I’ll have to incorporate that into my gift giving strategy. I’m horrible at budgeting, but love buying a nice gift for my loved ones.

"Can I borrow it?" SO HANDY in this ugly-sweater-office-party season. Just borrowed one from my sis, I wasn't planning on driving demand and spending my money on one of those.

  • @lalalexikins

I started a note in my phone with all my loved ones names, then throughout the year I put gift ideas for them in the note. If I hear them mention something throughout the year about something g they want , I’ll put it in my note. Helps a lot come Christmas time or birthdays, so I’m not scrambling trying to find something, and it’s always something I really think they’d actually use.

I love giving gifts that are activities especially for the people that have everything they want. Better for the planet and creates more memories and experiences which are better imo

    • @kreativekennedy
      @kreativekennedy 2 года назад

      What activities for example :-)

    • @kaktuskukkarossa
      @kaktuskukkarossa 2 года назад +8

@@kreativekennedy depends on where you are (what options are available) and what the gift-receiver likes! It could be something like wine-tasting or horse riding tour, bowling, taking them to see a game/concert/opera/ballet/stand-up and maybe buy better tickets than they could/would have. Or then try something together that the gift-receiver is interested in but hasn't done yet. This could be basically anything. I also think a high effort picnic with friends e.g. at the beach can be super nice, especially if it's a surprise. Me and my friend did this last summer as a birhday gift, and in addition bought cake pieces from a small local business that we otherwise wouldn't buy from (too high prices for our student budgets). We made memories and had fun time spending time together and eating good cakes:)

I saw this from an environment influencer about black friday, She Said that "if something normally costs 100€ and is on sale for 70€, you're not saving 30€, you're spending 70. So if it's not something you need, that not buying would be the real saving"

I love your reality on how hard it is to make a change against consumerism. I haven’t had a tv for 12 years and the first year was not easy. Every year for New Years my resolutions are to find three more sustainable changes or goals for the year. After so many years of these resolutions I feel I’m in a better place to make more conscious decisions throughout the year.

One of my favorite tips is if you think you want something, doing one or both of these things
    1) sleep on it - for a night or a few nights just because things we think we want are HEAVILY influenced by our mood and circumstances at that time
    2) for a houseware specifically (though this can be applied to other things) - keep track of HOW MANY times in a quarter you want something and would use that item. If it's several times per that quarter, it may be a good buy. If you maybe only want that item a few times per year, it's probably something you can live without.
(For me- a lemon squeezer and Wok are things I use all the time. An instapot we gave away because we didn't like it or use it- we also really only want a crock pot like 3 times per year so we haven't purchased one.)
Chelsea from the Financial Diet posted these tips and I swear by them

Something that helps me is thinking of the films I could go on with my friends for that price, or a nice meal (or couple of meals) I could have or a course I could save up to in a skill I really want to learn. Basically comparing how much happiness the item could give me to non material things I could have for that price.

Do your parents also do this scenario I'm about to play out for you?
You: "Hey, would I be able to have X thing? I could use it and know you don't.
Parent: "See this is why I don't get rid of things" (after having said item for over 25 years they didn't use or know they had). 🙄

This happened to me recently! My (brand new) bf was taking me to a fancy dinner for my birthday and I found a really old adorable 90s-aesthetic purse of my mom’s in the attic. I asked her if I could have it and she told me that she had completely forgotten she even owned it but still told me no, but she did let me borrow it for the night. I still think about it and all the cute outfits it would go with, but I also saw her using it again this spring. Sometimes it’s helpful to at least remind people of what they already have, especially with trends coming back around from decades ago!!

Shelby I relate so much, my mom was the exact same way, shopping was her entertainment and hobby. She constantly was decluttering because she was always buying. Now we've both learned to value what really matters (even though she still has some trouble letting go, ha). Now it's almost like minimalism has become an additional hobby for me, I love challenging myself not to buy new or at all.

As someone who finds following fashion (how the styles/trend change/evolve), but works at a job where I do not necessarily see myself dressing up so much, the instagram save function is great. I get to browse, see how people are styling pieces, and just save the idea into an archive, instead of going out to buy a bunch of things I was not so sure was going to fit into my life!

I think I commented this on another one of your videos... But I always tell my 4yo son and myself, "You can appreciate something without buying it." when shopping. It helped me cut down a ton on what I buy but still enjoy "shopping". We consolidate all our shopping to target one day a week. I have a list of what I need, I get that stuff and walk around the store just to get out of the house. I very rarely make an impulse purchase anymore since using that filter. 😊 And I can walk by the toy asile with 2 little kids and have no issues.

I do something similar. My mantra is "I don't have to own ALL the cute/ cool things." I do almost all my discretionary spending thrifting so there's a scarcity mindset that can kick in. Thinking about the fact that I can like something and still leave it for someone else to find has been a huge help for me.

My family loves giving gifts, so if I want something new or not sustainable (like furniture or makeup or hair products for example), I have an ongoing wish list of things like that for them to pick from. We all now have ongoing wish lists so we know we are getting each other something that will actually be used and it takes a lot of stress off of all of us and makes it a more fun experience. Also, once my youngest sibling turns 18, we plan on just doing a secret santa insteas which will help cut down on waste.

I heard a while ago that consumer satisfaction of a product was higher if they purchased the item at full price, versus on sale. The thinking goes: they really wanted that item, instead of just buying it because of "the deal." I don't do Instagram, but as I'm "window shopping" online I have a Pinterest button that can send things to a designated board. It's very effective at curbing the purchasing impulse. I can visit these "almost bought" items anytime and can eventually delete them and nothing has gone to waste but the time and electrons!

Some things are worth waiting for.
Also, the 2nd hand website in my country has an alert system where you get an e-mail if something is listed that fits your criteria and those are great if you've decided on what you want.

As someone who grew up in the suburbs, shopping was kind of my hobby because going to the mall was the sort of thing that teenagers could do independently. Which is a shame, really. I would like to see places set up more for people who are too young to drive and too young to drink alcohol.

My parents were both born during the great depression too and they both hated to buy anything new. That deprivation mentality lasted their whole life, even after they had financial success, they still lived way below their means. A lot of that frugality rubbed off on me. They also unfortunately both had an urge to never throw anything away even after it was worn out, unwanted, unused, or after it had been replaced. That is a tendency I have to fight against. I don't want to buy a lot of new stuff, but I also don't want to hoard old stuff.

What’s worse than stores that always have “sales” is when stores up the price to put it “on sale”. For example: I need a new voice recorder, I lost mine on a trip, no idea where it disappeared, and I put it on my wishlist, because I don’t need another until I start my project in January, so figured I’ll buy it then, but just in case it was on sale for Black Friday, I peaked at my wishlist, and it was marked as “on sale”, but in fact it was raised a dollar in price. 🤦‍♀️ A dollar is not much, but the fact they raised it $6 in price, just to offer a $5 Black Friday coupon is crazy

Thanks! As someone quite a bit older than you, I don't have the same background as you, but there are still similar lessons. When I was younger, we always went to funky little treasure shops and consignment shops always on the lookout for cool stuff and unusual finds. I used to go to military surplus stores and get funky vintage stuff. However, that urge to consume was similar...we always had collections of weird objets d'arts. I never hesitated to buy all the funky stuff I could afford. So, I appreciate your advice...it can be translated through the generations and different experiences.

I identify a lot with your experience as a plussize person when shopping in store. Personally I don't like online shopping, so I still go to physical shops, but I sometimes have a hard time differentiating between loving an item and being happy something fits me. I struggle a lot with my body image, which translates in my little obsession with hand bags, since they always 'fit'. Luckily i also keep them for a long time, and a lot of them are hand-me-downs, but still not the best of course.
I really try to implement a lot of your lifestyle to be a better person for the planet & the people. You are an inspiration!

I've done pretty well with reducing the amount that I shop and keeping myself from buying too many unnecessary things. For me, it doesn't matter if I have credit cards saved or not because my brain remembers numbers so I know all my card numbers and account numbers off the top of my head.
I do think it makes sense to avoid having a bunch of brand emails in your inbox. I created a separate email that I use to subscribe to brand emails so that when I have decided to buy something from a brand, I can go and search for it in my junk mail email in case there's any kind of sale or anything like that.
    Thanks for the video Shelbi!
EDIT: Holy moly, how did you know that my mom loves Kohl's!!

The sale one is super important to me. I don't buy things on sale if I wouldn't buy them full price. i.e. If there is a 2 for 1 sale and I wasn't planning on purchasing 2 items, I just get the 1 with an exception for things that if I wanted 2 and could only afford 1.

I wanted to comment that i have had a wishlist in my notes app for years and it's amazing, but waited to see if you would talk about that tip first :D a few years back i was always so stressed about presents, so i started writing down when someone close to me talked about something they really wanted. So when christmas comes i can see if i think these things still apply and give them something they will really enjoy :) and for myself i write down when i think that i really need something, like a special type of shoe. Then i wait some time and see if i find the perfect version of that thing for me but most times the want for it completely disappears. I just love it :D Much love from Austria!

Lovely video. Asking yourself questions before buying reminds me of the Minimalists list I used to use when I got into minimalism and consumerism a couple of years ago.
Isn't it ridiculous how there's such a pressure for gift giving yet many people receive (or give) things that aren't wished for?

They intentionally make it hard to repair. either its hard to get parts, it cost so much in labor or the wait time is huge.
I'm thinking of getting older times fixed up instead of buying new since new stuff are made not to last or complicated to repair.

I am making an advent calendar by giving her repaired/restaurated/repainted/rearranged christmas decor she already had. And home grown teas. She said she does not mind, the exitement is opening the package, not necessarily whats inside (also having your knick knacks revamped is nice). That reminds me of her childhood stories, where her favourite doll vanished a week before christmas and came up on christmas new packaged in a new dress sewn by my grandma from scraps.

Yes RUclips premium is my favorite subscription thing. If I am subscribed to anything it will be that. I hate ads, and it is so worth it to not see them... but I also want to support the people who make it. I rotate all other video subscriptions for a month or two while I watch what I want but I watch way more RUclips then I should ever admit to.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of an Insta account where we can collect the things we truly want for people who want to gift us to follow. Like, why is that not a thing already? I'm always telling my husband or mom that I don't need stuff, of that they should ask me before buying anything, and this would just make life easier... and stop people from buying me stuff I'm not really going to use, only to further propel the consumerism wheels. Yeah, I can donate or sell items I don't want, but that generally doesn't sit well with my mom, especially..

My family has gotten so much better about buying less and better gifts, I eat all my leftovers and if not I compost them, and a lot of my decorations are second hand or from small sellers on Etsy. I also have been reusing gift wrapping for years. This is just my little list.

I still have vintage bows and ribbons for wrapping gifts, because every year when my family opened gifts, we saved the bows and larger pieces of wrapping paper and reused them year after year.

Our microwave stopped working too! 😅 I don't know what it was because I'm dumb when it comes to these things but whenever we tried to heat up something smoke and a heavy smell of burnt plastic would come out and the smoke and the smell would stay for hours if not days! My dad is trying to look around for this rare part to fix it but it's so old that it's unlikely they still make that part. In this case, I think it's safe to get a new one

I know this is an older video but i am notorious for fixing things instead of replacing but i almost caved and bought a new vacuum because i thought mine was toast, turns out the brush was just stuck and was a super easy fix. So glad i didn’t buy a new vacuum.

Not a Boomer, but so called out. I used to shop at Kohl's a lot and still have a ton of those clothes. My favorite jeans are sold through them. I saved a lot of money using their coupons because I was a serious coupon stacker + clearance shopper, but I had to learn that skipping a sale cycle and not using a coupon was okay. With pandemic, I haven't done much of any clothing shopping save for a couple geeky graphic tees.

Found that Elfster works pretty well not all my friends and extended family use it but those who do, I know exactly what gifts to give them.
My difficultly is grocery ads, I see B1G1F on mini muffins and I hesitate. Then my method is to ask questions, 'Can I freeze them to make them last? Do I or my family truly need all that sugar, carbs? What can I do with these pre-made muffins to make them into a full-meal and not just a snack?' I acknowledge the flyers appeal and move on from it and try to find a better deal that's more suitable for my family.

I’ve found I cut way down on “convenience” items (tools/gadgets that aren’t necessary but cut time or effort) by instituting what we call the three use rule. I’m not allowed to buy it until I’ve actually had to do the task it is used for three times in under a year since deciding I want it. I find that I end up actually getting the item only about 10% of the time.

I force myself to only shop on sale. I have a note on my phone labeled shopping & it's a list of all the things I want or need to buy. Whether it's an educational toy for my son or a needing a new pair of pants. Which (unless it's time sensitive) I can only then buy during sales & then when I go shopping, It doesn't matter if it's on sale; if it's not on the list, it's a no. It forced me to wait & not impulse shop. It also works great as a wishlist too

For the past 3 years I was spending way too much money on clothing&accessories/jewellery each month. This year I am trying something else and I decided to give myself limit of £100 per month to spend on accessories/clothing/decor/tech etc (this doesn't include food, bills, basic cosmetics, and gifts for my family). So far so good :D
