Today marked an end to an era in southern New Jersey. A staple of drag racing in the area for 63 years, Atco Dragway announced its permanent closure.
Today, we travel back to the facility's first national event during the Billy Meyer IHRA era with the Summer Nationals. This was the IHRA's answer to Englishtown, in the midst of a full-scale territorial war. Meyer had just purchased the series from Larry Carrier and moved it to Waco, Texas.
One of the staples of the IHRA schedule was rain, and so much so the IHRA actually was recognized as "it has rained again." You'll see many recognizable faces in this video, including one famous 16-time NHRA champion.

My good friend George Cabel getting to the semi's in Pro Stock with an NHRA legal engine....500 cube R-M engine IIRC....Saw him everyday back then......was a great era....
