If you know about the history of Top 40 radio, then you know the name Gordon McLendon. McLendon was the owner of 1190 KLIF, and was considered the man who perfected Top 40 radio on KLIF. In 1954, the era when network radio was fading away because of TV, McLendon introduced the Top 40 format to the station and, as a result of this change, KLIF enjoyed dominance of the Dallas radio ratings in the 1950s, 1960s, and into the 1970s. At one point, more than half of the people listening to the radio in Dallas, were listening to KLIF! KLIF had a tight playlist, exciting promotions & contests, and bigger than life DJs. Some of the legendary personalities that worked at KLIF include... Jimmy Rabbitt, Paxton Mills, Michael O'Shea, Dick Heatherton, Chuck Murphy, Ron Chapman, Johnny Dark, Hal Martin, Rod Roddy, Cizzin Lennie, Brant Miller, John London, Randy Robbins, Russ Knight, Jim O'Brian, Chuck Dunaway, Ken Knox, George Michael, Deano Day, Gary Mack, Jay Lawrence,Gary Owens, and the voice heard on this aircheck, Charlie Van Dyke.
Van Dyke’s radio resume reads like a list of legendary radio stations across the country. CKLW Detroit, KFRC San Francisco, WLS Chicago, WDGY Minneapolis, WRKO Boston, and KHJ & KRTH Los Angeles. Charlie was very young when he landed his first major market gig, at KLIF. This aircheck is from the final day of his second tour of duty at KLIF from the late 1970s.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!

After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

This was just before he left to 68 WRKO in Boston to be the P.D. for a couple of years before they went to a Newstalk format. Thanks for sharing this great aircheck.

When he was in Boston, he was one of the main inspirations for me getting into radio.
My other main inspiration was Charles Laquidara from WBCN.

I remember KLIF living in Dallas (Richardson) area from 75 to 79. Moved to Austin and became a fan of k98 and ed volkman, till 1985 and then moved to Chicago and discovered Larry Lujack. I was very fortunate to be a part of some great dj experiences thru my moves…WLS always kinda reminded me of KLIF. Had that same sound to it. Great clip.

OMG, love this check. Good God, he's great. Pipes + timing + improvisational skills = One Of A Kind!
This entire check is a F'ing JEWEL to keep, to be sure. And an incredible bit of rare history on display where the air staff is so well stocked, deep bench as they say, that the traffic reporter's ability to ad lib [7:45] is on the same level as this UBER gifted host. And it's JUST ANOTHER DAY AT KLIF. OMG. What a treasure this aircheck is to anyone who loves history, and to recall the heights reached in live radio, by these extremely talented folks still alive today. Artists, all of them.

I spent my kid years in Houston where Charlie voiced KPRC-TV, the NBC affiliate that advertised itself as the station "On Your Side." And then I moved to Hampton Roads, and there's Charlie again at WAVY-TV, the NBC affiliate that advertises itself as the station "On Your Side." For a little while, I thought that these were required elements for NBC stations--Charlie van Dyke and "On Your Side" branding.

I wish you had some DFW radio stuff from the 1980s -- around '87 or '88. I was a kid during those years, and those were great times.

In Austin Charlie has been heard on three different TV stations-KTBC (when it was CBS and owned by Times Mirror), KXAN (NBC) and KVUE (ABC). The KLIF of 1979 was more AC than Top 40, but it would flip to country not long after this, and later to talk.
