So many to choose from. A full list might be infinite! I will go with albums recorded in my lifetime that I adore.
      "The Bends" Radiohead
"Seldom Seen Kid Live at Abbey Road" Elbow and BBC Concert Orchestra.
Abbey Road is almost the entirety of recorded music. From Stravinsky to today? I can't even!

It's a dream of mine to get into studio 2 someday. Just to touch the walls, walk down the stairs, and even smell the room would probably bring me to tears. To be in the same room as those four lads who would work 10-12 hour days creating masterpiece after masterpiece would be so magical. If those walls could talk.

I recorded there many times as a session player during the 70s and 80s and it never loses its sense of magic, that sense of somewhere special to be permitted entrance to. Studio 2 has a 'vibe' that is just...well, beyond my powers of description. I'm more or less retired now, so you can imagine my sense of sheer satisfaction when recently my daughter, also a musician, recorded there for the first time.

I was in a function band playing a lot of Beatles songs back in the the day (late 80s/early 90s) and I heard they had opened Abbey Road Studios to the public, so we had to go and do the tour. They had Studio two decked out with a lot of original Beatles instruments and recording equipment. It was spiritual being in there, like visiting a Cathedral. I could have sworn for a moment I detected the acrid scent of the Fab Four's stale cigarette smoke! All too soon the tour was over and we were outside joining the tourists, holding up traffic while trying to get a good shot of our four-piece walking across the Zebra. Happy days!!

Hi Warren. Great video as always. Very detailed explanation of the evolution of sound recording and production. An update for you; the BTR2 tape recorders were still in use at the BBC in the mid 1980s some 20 years after your 1965 date. There weren't many but they were still doing service in the World Service (then known as External Services) at that time. They were deployed alongside Leevers Rich and newest replacements, Studer A80s. I think there may have been as few as just a couple left by that time. These were possibly the last valve (apologies for American readers - tube) based tape recorders still in service in the West.

So ... this is your best video yet! Well researched and very in-depth, and with historical stuff even I was not aware of (and I've been studying that place for ages!).
I have lately been thinking that the studios were always a by-product of the real work that went off there - it has been very much an applied research facility since its inception.
Again ... truly excellent video. Looking forward to the next one!

Interesting video, putting Abbey Road in it's historical context, not just the place where 'those guys' made their records. BTW, the photo at 7:17 isn't Fred Gaisberg, but Al Bowlly, a very famous singer who died in the blitz in London.

Thanks Warren - great job! I've "always" wanted to see the inside. In my first effort, in 1977, when security was rather lax, I was able to walk in the front door, see the many gold record plaques on the hallway walls, and ask a receptionist if they did or allowed tours [which they didn't]. It would be nearly impossible for me to ever be able to be there for any of the occasional organized tours that they sometimes do [I just missed one back around 1984 - I found a ticket on the ground nearby a couple weeks afterward]. Your video is a great substitute for the real thing! [Bob from Arizona]

Warren: THANK YOU for an amazing video, I can tell you put a TON of work into that, the amount of details you crammed in was extraordinary and at the same time, very easy to take in. This is the video that they should have made and that I wanted to see when I watched the recent Netflix one which didn't even begin to touch on the amount of information that you've included. I'm a huge fan of British recording studios, especially the great Abbey Road (I also have that huge book, Recording The Beatles) and your video is essential viewing to not only get the history and importance of the studio, but it's place in the history of sound recording. Thanks again for this and also thanks for that great interview with Geoff Pesche. Cheers Simon Harris

What a great video! You touched on it in a single sentence, but I would be very interested in how the technology that was developed in the studios to make the sounds that could not be played live was adapted to well, be taken on tour. If you were to make a video on that topic, I would love to watch it.
