Its not to protect the resort, resorts don't really get hit by the Cartel because they have no need to do that when they make billions just by selling drugs.
In Cancun a few years back when me and my fiance went, all we saw were national guard kitted up with ars and 50 cals on the back of pickups. As an American it was a wild sight to see. At one point they were standing guard outside our pool at our resort. Idk if some shit went down on the nearby area but I was happy to be back in the states after.
