From what cast and crew have said in interviews, the original vision for 15x20 was a reunion in Harvelle's in Heaven with EVERYONE - Jo, Ellen, Kevin, Charlie, Eileen, Jody, Donna, Castiel, etc. and Kansas performing Carry on. Unfortunately Covid shut everything down.
I would LOVE to see a reshoot of 15x20 as originally intended. Hell, even a table read.

There were a lot of rewrites with the finale because of COVID, but the barebones stayed the same: Dean dying, Sam living, and them meeting in heaven.
But found family was supposed to be (and should have) a part of it. They were supposed to go into the roadhouse where old characters including Cas- were supposed to be there. And the band Kansas was supposed to be playing Carry on my Wayward Son.

I stumbled across you from your Arrow pilot reaction, and when you IDed Katie Cassidy in there from SPN, I thought "I wonder if hes reacted to SPN" & here I am. So you gained a sub for handling the Arrowverse, and all of the SPN eps. Cant wait to see what else you have in store down the line. I personally liked this finale, but I also was able to look past the fact they had to film it at the height of covid restrictions. Of course, everyone would have rather seen their complete vision, but reality was, they just couldnt. I just remember when it aired, SO MANY of my followers were so mad at the finale, and 60% of that anger was because they didnt get things they felt entitled to. Unfortunately, the pandemic killed any hope of a normal finale. They were the 1st U.S. production to be back filming in Vancouver, and were essentially the test subjects for the rest of the industry here to work off of how they worked around it.

Some missed opportunities here, a lot due to COVID... I assume that Eileen would have been the wife, - things that were definite were they would have had more cameos including Cas and Jodie... AND Kansas (the band) was going to be singing Carry On Wayward Son in the heaven version of the Roadhouse... Also - "I can't do this without you, yes you can, well I don't want to" is a callback to the pilot when Dean is asking Sam to find their dad

I agree. Seasons 13-15 were not very good for me. There were some really good episodes in there, but overall, I really didn't like them. Season 15 was the hardest for me of all of them. I didn't like the premise of it. I may change my opinion over time, but I just can't accept that there was no free will at all for Sam and Dean. In the end, though, they won. As they always did. They were always able to thwart the plans others had for them. But there was so much in season 15 that tore down all they had accomplished the previous 14 years and that bothered me a lot. The show will likely always still be my favorite show though.

The only parts of this whole episode I like. Dean wearing Cas' old tie during the case. (or a tie that looks like Cas' old tie) and the part of the speech about being afraid that Sam would say no to him when he goes to Sanford. It fits Dean's character so well and also parallels when he was staring at Cas in the gas station in S9, when he was afraid to talk to him. Dean's fear of rejection is heartbreaking.
    And seeing Bobby.

This is a hot take and I know most of you are going to strongly disagree with me, but I’m glad characters such as:
    - Jesse (The Antichrist)
    - Jacob (The Kid who watched Dean kill his mother in S7)
    - Crowley
    - Bela
….characters like that, I’m glad they never came back. I mean seriously, look at how they botched characters such as
-Mary: who in my opinion was just a shock value S11 cliffhanger.
    - Gabriel: who they brought back from death, then retconned his death, and then kill him off again.
    - OG Michael: a character who many of us who wanted to see his character return; and they finally do that, but poorly mishandle his character in the worst way possible.

I will say I absolutely love them bringing back Mary. Her hate in this fandom is so untoward. Dean had few memories of Mary, mostly a few from his childhood, but she was this mythical figure set up by their dad. And Sam never got to know her. And her coming back means they had to confront all of this. Dean had to confront his idealized and fake version of his mom with the real thing. Sam got to know his mom. we see the parallels of Sam-Johm and Dean-Mary again. We see what kind of mom Mary would be with how she protects and trains Jack. The only thing I hate is her being fridged again.

Two) this also reminded me how much of Sam's plotlines we're really wasted potential - kinda after S8 and the trials)Gadreel. But they dropped plotlines like leader! Sam and witch!Sam. Rowena taught him magic and gave him all her books, only entrusted him with them for what? To mope around in a bad wig? I love Sam and I get angry how dirty they did his character storylines. I agree, I think the ending was good, COVID getting in the way of them ending it how they would have originally wanted sucks but what they gave us was a great way to end it all. I do hope they can somehow one day get together and not redo the ending but maybe do a table read of the original intended ending... I'm just really curious. Dean dying on a hunt was perfect, Sam getting the family he always wanted was great, Heaven being opened up and it being just another version of our already existing world so the people can all continue their lives as if they were still alive...i like that. What I didn't like, was Sam's old man wig....it just...idk lol but all in all it was a great ending to an awesome show. (Also, I agree 13-15 were meh seasons).

The only thing I LOVED was that the "case" Dean found - the pie festival, it was cute, light and reflected the pie pranks the crew are notorious for. But the episode was boring and I could watch these guys do anything...why not just let them drive down a damn two lane highway like the old days and let us assume it's open to anything. After 15 years we deserved something more by at least not burning it all down. Castiel barely got a mention in the last two episodes and no matter what I have read or heard, his character was sort of a really BIG DEAL (and that is an understatement). The AU hunter crew, Jody, Donna, etc. were never checked up on nor was Eileen. She seemed really important to Sam so I think most people like to assume that the blurry wife in the background was her. Team Free Will meant something to us but they gave us a bad party city wig on Sam and some weirdly placed rebar that took out Dean - the same man who was called out by Death for being "human disorder incarnate". A couple of tweaks would easily make this ending decent but I hated it.

Thank you for all your spn reactions! I agree I loved how they ended the characters, very on point with what people would expect. There have been many passionate debates from people who didn’t want Dean to die but I agree with you that going out on a hunt is very ‘Dean’. People who think Dean wanted to die on a hunt, deserved to die on a hunt, or would always die on a hunt really did not understand his character at all.
He only thought he would get it because of his trauma. He did not want it nor should have had the ending he did. Simple as that.
And it makes me sad cause Dean was more than big brother pie man that they made him in their episode. He wanted out and whether it was retirement or semiretirement, he should have been allowed that.

The whole point of the ending was you don’t always get what you want. I’m glad this series went this way because I was so tired of everyone getting a happy ending when that’s not how life works. Me and dean are essentially the same person which is why I thought the ending was perfect. He knew he was going to die like that and it was important for him to die like that. This show saved my life, and Deans character was one of the biggest reasons.

@@andiewfs_XIII Dean and I are the same and it made me rethink life in a bad way. Dean didn't want that ending, he only thought he would get it because of his trauma and imo the show should not have gone the route it did showing we only get what we think we will get because of our trauma, we should get more, fight for more, not give up. So we all have are own way of dealing with it. I'm glad it helped you. It certainly did the opposite for me. That's what media is for.
Dean was a large part of why I loved the show (Cas is my favorite character) but his ending made me not be able to watch the show for over a year and almost ruined all his character development since they took it away in the end. If I ignore that awful finale in which everyone is ooc, then I can rewatch the show.

There is a wide running error in the fandom that Kripke had this five year plan planned out from the beginning. He didn't and he's said this multiple times. They wrote each season self contained because they were also nervous of being canceled. And then the writers strike hit and Dean went to hell when the original plot of Sam saving him before he went to hell. It changed the show and Kripke decided he only wanted to showrun through five seasons because he wanted to do other shows. They knew the show was renewed before he left. @@hisgirlfriday28 I think it’s totally fair to argue poor writing when it comes to dialogue or plot execution but as far as the arc of the story it makes total sense. First, as mentioned, it’s the polar opposite of Swan Song but also team free will is everything we’ve been building towards. Otherwise he wouldn’t have told Sam not to bring him back. They didn’t replace Chuck so they could go on living charmed lives protected by Jack.

    • @hisgirlfriday28
      @hisgirlfriday28 Год назад +2

@@patd0 no, the story was building to them being free. They shouldn't have killed Dean and especially not in that way. They went on a hero's journey without the award. I wasn't expecting a happy ending, that's not the show was. It should have been more ambiguous like the previous episode. And not this poorly written and directed episode. And not this death. It's a Chekov's Gun in many ways and honestly Swan asong would have been a terrible series finale, a great season finale, but not end of show. So switching it does nothing, especially when the show was showing how much the brothers have grown and expanded their family just to cut them all out, making them appear to regress. Dean is back to big brother pie man. Sam is back to a normal life when his better storyline leader and witch Sam are forgotten. The show was no longer at Swan Song, so that ending made no sense!
Yes, him not asking to be brought back is growth. Not denying that.
We all have different opinions of the finale. And as I rewatched the show I only got madder at how disappointing it is and poorly executed filmmaking wise. If people found peace, I'm happy for them, but it only made me realize how manipulative it was especially when you look at how much they were leading to a better ending and we got...that.

I hate ranking the seasons, I think it's easier to rank plotlines. Some last only half a season or in the case of the MoC almost two seasons. The show is good at taking earlier things set up and bringing them back. Or paralleling. Like the pilot references in this episode or how Dean and Cas' first and last hug are in Purgatory.
    Here are some unsolicited opinions.
S8 -Sacrifice is the best finale, hands down. S15 is the worst, hands down.
S4 -is the best season both filmmaking and storytelling wise.
Every era has issues, none are perfect and there is no need to fight about which one is better.
The early seasons cinematography was the best throughout the show. S8 and S13-15 the worst - the orange lighting made everything look bad -including the actors spray on tans.
Nick in S14 is the worst plotline.
    My favourite seasons: 4, 5, 8, 2, 12, 3, 11, 1
Overall: SPN has a lot of ups and downs. There are problems that need to be kept in mind from racism, misogyny, and homophobia. Most of these are from the earlier seasons and because of traditional horror tropes and the humor of the 2000s. Most of these were corrected by the end, but not all including some last minute almost bury your gays and misogyny in those last three episodes.
There are many things to love about the show and why so many of us stuck around for all these years. It really taught us to take the good with the bad. And I would not give up getting 15 years of it, and will watch all of it but the finale in the future.
    Carry On Wayward Friends.

With rewatches you notice so many setups that's fulfilled in finale or kind of iffy lol like how many times they said in this line of work you die early. When Mary and dean talked in one I was oh shoot that's what they did in finale lol. Dean always said he'd keep fighting til he can't no more. I guess that s what he did. Told Sam to never give up fighting had a feeling there dean was giving up lol. Fight dEan fight lol. Don't give up lol but he knew there was nothing to do that injury he's dead. Ahh yes, the one were Sam and Dean's ending regressed them completely back to the pilot. They tried to make them full circle but instead destroyed the growth. If you watch a pilot of the show and then the finale and know exactly what's going on, then that's failed storytelling. What happened to the brothers is exactly what happened if the show didn't happen, Dean dies young on his abusive father's failed hunt, Sam gets a blurry (the show had to have one last misogynic moment) wife and a son and apparently leaves the life. But also there are absolutely no mentions or even photos of the found family on the wall.
Yes, it was planned to have Sam call family during the funeral scene, and Cas and other found family were planned to be in the Roadhouse, which they claimed COVID ruined, BUT they chose to also not work around that - have the actors record voices, or even have pictures of them on Sam's mantel or even freaking mention anyone. After Sam went crazy when Eileen disappeared they don't even freaking mention her name again.
The brothers may be the heart of the show but them growing and getting a found family is the soul, and they should have been included, period.
This was a hero's journey with no reward.
The only one who really got it and that's debatable is Castiel; he died a hero and his reward was first saving his son, then the love of his life (his confession of love is romantic, there is no argument there.- Dean's feelings are open ended, Cas' are not) and therefore saving the world.
Also having Dean die - in a heavily suicidal way (when he is already a suicidal at times character), completely negates Cas' sacrifice.
What a crap ending. There was no peace when it was done.

What do you mean? You are just factually wrong? Pilot Sam would never have been crying over Dean's Death; the whole point of this episode was to be like the early days of the show because you seem to have conveniently forgotten that before they started shoving the heaven and Hell mythology down our throats, was just about Sam and Dean, and occasionally Bobby. It boggles my mind people call this a bad ending, it's obviously not perfect but one last time I really appreciate the fact that the last episode of the show told us that Dean and Sam truly went from estranged brothers with a rocky relationship at best, to Sam, loving his brother so much that he did not want to be hunting without him.
I love the episode precisely because it is just about Sam and Dean, saving people hunting things. Dean goes out like any normal Hunter eventually would if God is not pulling the strings and Sam decides to live a relatively normal life which he was always more capable of doing than Dean.
The only slightly disappointing thing is the lack of John and Mary on screen, but given the headache of trying to schedule and film around COVID I'm not even mad.

@@joshz2491 I did not mention anything about their siblingship.
By regressing back and giving them the same ending as before the pilot I mean: Dean died on a hunt. Something his low self worth thought would happen to him but he has stated multiple times, and as early as S2 that he didn't want. And Sam would have married and had a vanilla life. When he was the one who by near the end was all into the hunting life.
So no, I'm not factually wrong.
Yes, the brothers are the heart and I love their siblingship, but the extended cast and how the brothers learned to grow outside the two of them and form connections with others when John kept them isolated and only reliant on themselves make up the soul. TFW! And yes, I agree, pilot Sam would not be crying over Dean's death like this, that is not what I was pointing out.
I respect you like the ending, respect that I hate it.

@@hisgirlfriday28 your free to like the ensemble cast, I don't think that the finale regressed anything, both brothers still fully understand the meaning of having a “found family” the finale does not tarnish that; it simple puts the focus back on Sam and Dean which is what is missing from the later seasons of the show. The show was always at its best when they got all the screen time. Not that later seasons are bad but the show really became over-saturated with supporting characters in the second half of its run.

@@joshz2491 thanks for telling me what I'm free to like, man. Real nice of ya.
oh wow. Your opinion is yeah, not my opinion at all. The show was good showing how the brothers expanded from their codependency taught to them from an abusive parent. And them learning to grow as humans themselves and with others is what made the show good. Yes, I love some of the more brother-centric episodes ( they are the heart) but the found family is where it's at ( especially Cas' - they are the soul.) And yes, going back to just the brothers regressed them in many ways. The show has always been and was way past just the two brothers and the show reflected that but not the finale. That's why the finale fails for so many. Plus it's just terrible writing, acting, filmmaking, and ugly cinematography. Just bad, bad, bad.
Oversaturated with supporting characters is hilarious, truly. You missed the point of the show if you really think that. How many times must the actors and creators say it's a show about two brothers AND their found family.

From a filmmaking perspective, this episode is disappointing and boring at best, weird and bad at worst.
1/4 of it is music montages. Two of those are the same song back-to-back! Like really? The music during the pie festival is like a parody and makes the scene cringeworthy.
The lack of mourning of Cas or mention Eileen at all, or even any found family, incredibly out of character and problematic.
The case: it doesn't make sense. After Cas changes Dean's view on himself ("Dean Winchester, the ultimate killer." "That's not who I am.") we then get Dean dying how he always thought BUT NEVER WANTED. He's Daddy little soldier trying to clean up a case John butchered. Vampires wearing masks?? Vampires bite..so to cover their mouths is an odd and nonsensical choice.
The directing, acting, and editing is wanting. And I need to point out again, Dabb was not the only showrunner, so was Singer. Who has a bad track record. Dabb got writing credit for this but it had to go through all executive producers and writing room. This episode is so against what the show was gearing toward, so it feels off.
Trying to balance the tragedy and shock value of Dean dying and the ten minute speech then reuniting Sam and Dean only ten minutes later is not sad but makes it meaninglessly ultimately.
An open ending of Inherit the Earth is ten times better of an ending than this. It shows they didn't get there freedom. Chuck won.
Spn should have ended open ended or completely tragic, not this meager hedging of disappointment.
If you did get closure, I'm so happy for you. Enjoy it. But don't be dicks to us who found this episode the opposite.

But ultimately the shows diverted with their messaging. Buffy doubled down on found family: they fought together and defeated darkness that way. Strength together.
SPN did the opposite. taking away the found family and making it only about the brothers and cut found family from it completely, and only mention blood family the die because they don't have strength without their found family. It was certainly a choice.
The Buffy finale and messaging wins across the board.

Led Zeppelin would have played somewhere in the episode.. and I might have eliminated that final plot hole.. that funeral pyre.. no way that could have been Dean.. no bowed legs.
Being boned from behind by an erection shaped piece of rebar.. they could have done better.
Originally, Dean was supposed to be injured on the ground for that final conversation.. Jensen fought to be on his feet for that scene.. and I guess a dick in the back was payment for having a whole lighting set change thing on the day.
Also.. a better wig for Jared as old guy Sam.
I loved that they used both the original version of Carry on and the one by Neoni.
I had three little wishes for season 15.. two happened.. Amara got a new wardrobe and, finally, Cas and Jody met.
The last one was dragging Crowley and Gabriel back from the empty. oh well.
