All these artifacts are now the residue of once a great man's life.
Now to be divided and scattered. Truly a humbling experience.
Thank you Les Paul for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent..
Thank you Norm. I really enjoyed what you did with the zles Paul tour
Les Paul was a pioneer in multitrack recording and overdubbing.
Ampex recording equipment was used in the Easten Sound recording studio when I worked there in 1971. He's referring to API recording console (I think), at Eastern Sound we had a 32 input/24trk output APi console. APi stood for Automated Processes Inc.
We used the AMPEX 8 trk and 16/24trk MM recorders at Eastern SOUND back in the day.
We also used the U47 and U87 Neumann mics in most recording applications, along with AKG and other specialty mics.
Les was one of a kind. If it didnt exist... he made it exist.
1:37 Fender?? 😲
+wow@ Tom. !!Real gold topend TELEFUNK in this vid; bigtime cheers, love it 🙏🏽
Thanks, again, Norm & Jen for such a great tour & video!
Love it. Thanks for filming this.
Thanks for the video. Amazing to see all this.
man he had a lot of Gibson's....they should've named one after him!
Amazing!
Thanks so much Norm.
I learned so much about early hardware, thanks!
Thanks so much for this. Really is amazing.
Thanks for the tour.
Fantastic Video! Thank You!
That was all great to see Norm. Thank you!
thank you so much for sharing this norm..
Thank you so much Norm for showing us all this great iconic equipment, great video
This is so cool! Wish I could walk through there.
great video, thanks
Thanks Norm... revisited for posterity...glad to have the catalog here. Thanks to the Burst Brothers all in all.
guitars are guitars, amps are amps, the recording stuff was really interesting
Norm you walked right past the Django guitar. I saw a documentary where Les said it was given to him by Django, it looked like he kept it under the bed.
Very interesting stuff!
THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE VIDEO NORM ~ WHAT A TREAT IT IS TO VIEW A PORTION OF THE LES PAUL PERSONAL COLLECTION- THANK YOU NORM AND THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IN TOM AS WELL ~ CARLOS GUITARLOS 90042
Thanks Norm. This means a lot.
Norm, you rock on that amp!! Rock on!!!
Thank you for posting these videos, very interesting stuff! Seeing his old recording desks and studio gear is very neat. I agree with the other people posting here, there should be a museum dedicated to displaying these items you have shown us! Where there are duplicate or multiple items, sell them to working studios where they will function as they were intended.
thanks norm
I WANT THAT DRILL PRESS!!!
amazing information : )
Man this is so damn cool.
Great video, Cheers Norm!!!
3:23 Nice! Love the Nighthawk on the wall, just such a beautiful and versatile instrument as far as offset design and tones are concerned.. I've heard ALOT of hate for the 'hawk over the years into the present and some of the shit I have heard regarding this model can be construed as being deserved by Gibson for failing to market it properly and for failing to highlight the vast array of tonality that can be easily achieved using these pickups in the configuration they chose to make standard on these Nighthawks.. Man, they are seriously such badass instruments and its a damn shame they never really got the chance to win players over in the grand scheme of things.. NV And now they're most closely associated with Nancy Wilson of Heart and that's just fucked as all hell for this model. Should have gotten a really respected name such as Paul Gilbert or John Petrucci to adopt this model exclusively, to the point where those guys would be identified by the fact that they only play Nighthawks, back when the model debuted in the early 90s.. If that was the case I promise these
motherfuckers would be iconic as fuck and unaffordable outside of a small fortune nowadays..
Anyway, that's all I had to offer and will get little into the sunset now..
i was so hoping they would show/talk about some of Lester's disc recording equipment
is that a fan cooled Les Paul on the right at 2:20??? Fuck!!
At around 4:08, you see a multi-track machine (either 8 or 16 track...can't tell) using an Ampex Quadraplex video tape deck as the transport. These decks were the first to use 2" tape for video, long before 2" tape was used to record audio.
already found abandoned the original seventy three and now i need to know where to buy norms cool factor!
All this stuff should go into a museum and stay together. I'd pay to see it all.
"Stairway To Heaven" was not recorded at Sunset Studios; it was recorded at Basing Street Studios in, with some overdubs dinner at Olympic Studios (Barnes). Robert wrote the lyrics at Headley Grange in Hampshire.
So.....did Norm end up with anything from this auction? If so, it would make a great follow-up video.
Fantastic videos Norm! Thanks for letting us see this. A little tip is to use a mike from the camera so it's easier to hear you when there is background noise. Anyway, I love your youtube channel. One of the best there is.
@ 1:10 Another Studio Lite w/ M-III Electronics = Blue Trans with white middle pickup Like my avatar = SWEET!!
How did the auction go?
Norm, I wanna be just like you when I grow up!
It should all be in a museum.
It’s personal property of his heirs . They wanted to sell it. They decide what happens to it .
all I see here is norman.we'd like to see more guitars next time please!
he had all those guitars in his bedroom?
All of that recording gear should still be used....Maybe not Les' originals, but similar recording gear. This digital recording craze has gotten way out of control.
+TheOldOakSyndicate It's great to see someone thinks as I do. Digital may be easy to use but I love analogue and use tape machines. My own personal guitar/bass rig is all analogue too. Digital has no soul :-)
Paul Evans Awesome man! Interesting you mentioned your bass rig, I think the bass guitar (and drums) suffer the most when recorded digitally. I can barely hear the bass guitar in most modern recordings, and if you can hear it, it doesn't "boom", or "drive" like it did in years past. Listen to any early Rolling Stones track and you'll see what I mean. Keep up the tradition friend!
digital recording...??
feels bad man
He spent his whole life trying to get the cleanest sound and then came all the compression and distortion . It must have drove him crazy.. Don't know if it is true or not ,but was told he traced an old parlor sized guitar for his Les paul body. if that is true ,I would like to see the guitar used as a template.
It's tragic that the government didn't unite with the private sector and try to build a museum and put all of Les Paul's stuff in it and preserve it for prosperity. Why did they auction all his stuff off? A very important piece of American history has been destroyed- lost forever.
Paul Larnce I live near Les Paul’s house and I could tell you lie because New Jersey sucks I think can’t make money off of it they don’t shit it’s all democrat run
@@freedomfighter5054 wait you had that obese criminal refuglican governor guy, what was that fat fucks name? the one that closed the bridge to punish people? He had his stomach tied because he couldnt control his appetite. I dont think demos are your problem.. oh and all those SUV wall street losers sleep in jersey.. those guys are the real fucking criminals .. 😂🤣😂
Holy shit that guy knows his stuff
This stuff should be in a museum. Not scattered all over the world.
Money my friend it s u s a
The heirs to Les Paul have the right to do what they will, with these objects. They choose to sell.
Guy with the white T-shirt never answers your questions Norm 😔
Good luck with the bidding Norm.
No amplifiers?
What an amazing collection of instruments and technology. I would guess you had to be a serious player to participate in the auction, but I would have gladly paid $50 just to be in the room with all of this for a couple of hours.
+John Buffaloe Id have paid way more to film it.
What, if any, did you bid on/win?
I know this is a long ways down the road, but what things did you bid and or win?
Cant believe his license plate went for 10k. Holy moly.
So how did Norm due at the auction?
Hey Norm, I was wondering if you could give some more info on that guitar with the mic coming out of it, thats sunburst that les paul signed. It kind of looked like a fender, but is it some sort of gibson prototype?
and people think geniuses, guitar players, and artists are mutually exclusive...
Cream Dream.
how much did it all go for?
Too bad they didn't have Les' original disc cutting lathes....
holy crap you passed right by the selmer guitar that Django Reinhardt gave to les
Norm lookin' all fresh and shit.
dude that chick is waiting for norm to stop getting filmed playing piano so she can get filmed on the face by norm!
Norm, those clothes look better on you than they do on Gene Simmons 👍
Norman who?
his favorite guitar was made by les paul not gibson he modified it
Les Paul Auction ? Looks like everything BUT the auction. :(
tss les paul? what do you want more john ah sumpthin. just riffin.
I'm still trying 2 figure out what Pauls best album or even number 1 song was??? can someone help me??? TY
I find this both sad and wrong, the fact that there selling off all his gear that he loved so much and even worse that it's all being split up ! I know it's all about money but like I said sad very sad :-(
Seems strangely ironic that Norman plays keys........
@ 0:35 Very fake (illegal even?) "his masters voice" gramophone - straight outta mumbai - I wonder if rca is aware of these - no love for the edison gem either.
no auction at all in this video.
