Thank you for posting this, Mark. I had never before heard this recording. What amazingly centered rhythm and such a control of tonal nuance with the most discreet pedaling ever! This is all the more reason that APR needs to release a complete edition of Solomon's recordings remastered from scratch - all the EMIs, HMVs and pre-war Columbias....the whole enchilada!
I've just listened to 10 different pianists playing that piece. This version is the most beautiful. Solomon's phrasing is very logical and clear. Most pianists don't even bother with phrasing. They just play the notes as they are written.
Yes, that one made it to CD but not this for some reason. Same with a Bach Prelude and Fugue from 1951 - it was in the same German LP box set that this one comes from (an INCREDIBLE set) and you can also now find it on my channel: ruclips.net/video/qhuhjxsjG3w/видео.html
@@ThePianoFiles I think it did make it on to a long-deleted CD collection on the Pearl label. But I never managed to track down a copy. I hadn't heard it for about 40 years until today. A wonderful rediscovery. Thank you!
Thank you so much for posting this recording on youtube Mark! I've been looking for it on youtube and the internet for a long while to no avail. Remarkable to hear Solomon's playing of this Haydn sonata for the first time!

I agree. And I need to read that incredible biography again. I never had my own copy. Bryan's book is among my desert island picks. A MUST read.♥️
That slow movement just floats serenely like a lonely cloud against a blue summer sky.

1. Allegro con brio: 0:00
2. Adagio: 5:23
3. Finale: Allegro: 13:44
Impeccable control of dynamics and rhythm, and what a magical slow movement.
By Solomon I only knew the Haydn's D Major Sonata. What a wunderful Surprise! Thanks for Posting.

Top! A joy to hear.
Pure and full of life !
An unjustly forgotten great artist. With Myra Hess, Curzon the top British pianists.
He is certainly not forgotten by connoisseurs of great piano playing.
Excellent music 🎹🎶👏
Absolute perfection - thank you for posting !!
Simply sensational.
One of my favorite pianists!! Had no idea he'd recorded this. Which other Haydn did he record?
A D Major Sonata that you can find on RUclips ... that was done in 1946 and somehow made it to CD while this one didn't.
Volume ?????
It must be your computer setting - it's working!
@@ThePianoFiles- de la semaine du de
Now we have from the 🇬🇧 Benjamin Grosvenor and Paul Lewis and Steven Osbourne
But all three are incomparable with Solomon, Myra, Benno
Wonderful!
