That scene with Avon and D in the hospice with his older brother always hits me. Wood Harris is one of the most underrate actors out there.
Didn't even know that was his brother, thought it was HIS uncle, thats why we need a wire prequel movie.
Black Men…(NOT MALES or 🥷🏿’s) We must make sure that WOOD HARRIS Gets his 💐. PHENOMENALLY GIFTED Actor who delivers in Every Scene he’s in. He brings our his Character’s TRUE CHARACTER ‼️ 🫡
So funny. Been watching the wire for years until one day in 2012 until I realized that Avon brother had been shot in the head
U gota see him in the movie I think it's called next day air wood is dope.
On God
There wouldnt have been a fight if Avon wasnt hurt. Stringer only got brazen because he knew Avon was injured.
Avon attacked Stringer tho..before anyone got brazen
I wouldnt say “brazen” bc Stringer was defending himself. If anything Avon was “brazen”
Avon would've destroyed Stringer, remember he was a boxer, before his "physical defects" 😃
Just like there wouldn't have been a war with Marlo if Avon still had Stinkum, Bird, Savino, Weebay, Brother Mouzone, and a blood thirsty Cutty along with Slim in the battlefield. If Stringer wouldn't of snitched, Avon was about to take out Marlo without his most valuable soldiers.
That moment isn't about who would win a fight, it was about the dialogue
Blood is thicker than water is often misunderstood. It means the bond of war (blood of battle) is thicker than the bond of kinship (water of the womb). Great video as always.
Great comment. I was going to post the same.
Damn ya right, I just learned something!

I loved Avon character intro when Donette sees him for the first time and she says that's your uncle with this surprised look on her face. She was speaking for the audience for sure. Avon cooking ribs in an apron laughing in the kitchen is not how a tv drug kingpin is supposed to be. You'd expect him to be bling blinging like Manny fresh surrounded by generic goons. That was start of his humanizing and complexity and what made him so interesting
Yeah it's true that Avon character is probably the most realistic depiction of a kingpin I have ever saw. There may have been more iconic ones like Scarface l, or The Godfather, but as far aa nuances and believability Avon(Wood Harris) takes the cake.
Nah I think Marlo and The Greek are more realistic than Avon
@@BigA678 Marlo was no kingpin, "he's a f**king peasant" like Omar (not the gay one) called Tony Montana.
@@BigA678 na it’s hard to understand why Marlo is even above Chris, who is older, more down with the crew, more strategic and level headed, and tougher, also more respectable. On contrast it’s easy to see why Avon is boss, has all the attributes. The way he dodged Omar’s shot shows he can even get down on the streets which all soldiers respect. Also he had the best sense of humour off all the kingpins on the show, so people would gravitate to him most
@@lowkey621 I don't think Chris wants to be #1. I think his personality is more suited to soldier, and he's very smart, he knows himself. He is Marlo's biggest asset for this reason.
@@54321dmsk Chris did a life bid for a clown (marlo). At least Weebay doing time for a respectable organization with reputation.
You breaking this down in perspective makes the show 10x more legendary keep doing your thing
If you could draw parallels between the cops and ‘criminals’ on the wire, especially in the first season…D’Angelo was definitely the Pryzbo of the Barksdale crew
Facts pryzbo didn't really want to be police just like D'Angelo didn't want to be in the game
@@keithsmith8975 facts both were drawn to their proffesions by family, d because of avon and pryzbo because he was married to Volchek daughter
@@keithsmith8975 Pryzbo was Valchek’s son in law and got away with a lot due to nepotism, just like D’Angelo. They both rejected their seniors way of thinking (avon and Valchek). Every time they pulled a gun, something unnecessary happened. They both were really good at what they did, just better “in office” than out on the field. And like you said, they probably would’ve been awesome at other professions, which we got to see Pryzbo do. So many parallels that I’m probably forgetting but yeah. You can compare others on the show as well. There’s lots of similarities between to the 2 sides.
Yeah, I can see that. Dee needed to be in-house, working on a project or something. He lacked the heart and wisdom for the streets.
And both personified blood is thicker than water.
When Avon gave Marlo the connect he knew it would doom Prop Joe and that it would eventually spell the end for Marlo too. He knew that once Marlo got the crown that he wouldn't be able to keep it.
Except that makes no sense, when he said some about the westside got to stick together, he wanted prop joe gone period, Marlo only fell because of the police
@@StringerBell-r1zAvon meant that the westside gotta stick together. However he was still using Marlo had to get back for String alone
@@Wulf82 you just said what I said, except Marlo people never got stringer and Avon already knows he sold stringer out to brother mouzone.
This channel is the best review channel on RUclips for anything... the wire is a modern day epic, so much to unpack and digest, no other show or book from our era has the level of depth and execution this show had.
Definitely was ahead of it’s time
"The Sopranos" could compete
@@Rowdy_7441Sopranos was a great top tier show acting writing directing but imo the Wire touches on more of the issues of a city a state that affects everyone the gangstas the 9-5 civilians the kids, we were given a full circle from the series opening scene being a fresh homicide being investigated then we get how a poor city operates a poor police, politics, fading good local union jobs, failing school system, gentrification & the newspaper industry was starting to shrink & how they operate & what they believe is headline worthy. The Sopranos did a great job of taking away the myth that the mob from the Boss down to the foot soldiers is just a crew of rich successful gangstas it really showed how petty & desperate they can be like before Tony returned the goods back to the trucking company they stole some suits or when two guys in Tony crew attempted to muscle the new coffee cafe, “it’s over for the little guys” lol they survived off of putting a squeeze on the little guys a great show nonetheless.
that analogy comparing Avons approach, mindset toward the game & the NFL playoffs was brilliant.. fuck up once and you done

FEAR= RESPECT! I say that to say Avons fear/paranoia is truly a respect for the danger of the game.

It seems to me that both Avon and Marlo truly enjoy being king - for Avon, though, being king is a means to an end. For Marlo, being king *is* the end - the only end that matters (and for its own sake). You could say that Avon is the realist while Marlo is the romantic.
Avon seems to see himself as playing an important role in his community (there are multiple examples of this, from the East Side/West Side basketball game to funding Cutty’s
Boxing Gym). Meanwhile, it is not even clear whether Marlo believes in any such thing as “a community.”
Avon is a very wise character in my eyes. He is certainly smarter than Stringer, and though I personally don’t think he is Marlo’s intellectual equal, he still has enough foresight and insight to deduce Marlo’s ultimate goals and profit from his attempted takeover of the drug trade. This is because he has wisdom and experience on his side.
As always - loved the video.
Nigga!!!
I was a radio, tv, and film major in school, so I already watch with a very critically detailed eye but
every time I catch one of your breakdowns it feels like a master class!
Just fucking brilliant man..Kudos
Stumbled on ya channel…dope content..I’m subscribed
Avons crew was run so well imo because there were multiple leaders. In season 1 they played there role to a tee. They remind me in the 96 Bulls in a way let me explain:
Avon was the vocal leader the obvious head of the team like MJ.
Stringer the leader you see in the field more how Pippen was the playmaker, the guy who guarded the best player on the other team Stringer called certain shots handled the finances(on a street level because Brianna handled the laundering part) but when put in a true leadership position he did well showed off some skill but ultimately failed(Pippen in 94&95 without MJ)
Weebay is the Dennis Rodman does all the dirty work. Getting rebound, guarding every position, getting in the other teams heads. Weebay I'm estimating went on 80-90 percent of missions that involved murder and sending shots taking over blocks he did the dirty work and for most part kept the killers organized.
When all 3 ran together they were unstoppable. Very realistic at how the strongest organizations or teams work. 1 leader is never enough(look at Luka this year or Marlo when he came home with no Chris)
Great video per usual btw
Levy was Phil Jackson 😂

Another solid video, brother!
The question "was DeAngelo weak?" is one that has been argued back and forth for decades.
I think that in Dee's case, nature vs. nurture could definitely be used. Personality-wise, his environment didn't shape him and harden his humanity as much as some of the others in the Pit. I think him being the nephew of Avon allowed him to survive as long as he did. But as we saw, he still had what some could be considered a "good" heart (like when he still paid Wallace even though Wallace wasn't working because he understood how much the Brandon killing messed Wall up). However, he just wasn't built for the severity of the street due to his personality.
A similar parallel (that I JUST thought of while typing this) can be said for Namond. He too tried to appear tougher than he really was due to the environment he grew up in. As we saw, however, when he gave Michael's mom her fix as a kind gesture instead of recognizing that she was an "m-fin dope fiend (word to Kenard)", that opened up the door for him to be taken advantage of by Kenard or called out by Michael as "always just saying" (no action). The interesting thing about that is that before Michael slapped him up and before Kenard stole the package, Namond mentioned in the special group at school about not showing weakness while being on the corner.
Namond lucked out, because he had someone that wasn't in the Game help to get him out. Dee thinking that jail would be his way out of the Game (somewhat) in having nothing to do with Avon was foolish. Jail doesn't insulate a person from the goings-on of the outside world, especially if there is a family member that's a high player in there with them.
I think in both Dee and Namond, they were trying to be molded by their environment into something that wasn't in their own natures.
As it pertains to the Streets, that may be seen as weak.
Although...(again, just realizing this as I typed this) Avon did let Cutty out of the Game free and clear without any repercussions. Maybe he finally recognized that some people's journey (no matter what they did before) didn't always stay in the Game. Perhaps if Dee had told Avon that he wanted out way before the cops stopped him while he moved the weight, maybe he would've had a Cutty-like ending to his story. But being battle-hardened, Cutty also had the gumption to ask Avon out of the organization.
Interestingly, Avon saw Cutty as a man when he wanted out but he saw Dee as weak. Perhaps it was what Cutty did in the past, or maybe that he respected Cutty for even asking him out of his org.
Ok, I think that's enough for me. Lol. Thanks again for the great content!
This was on point bro. I agree with it all, I’ll go in on it soon👌🏽💯
@@AMansWorldPodcast Can't wait to see it, bro!
The things is because of who their parents were, they were sheltered in the environment. Their mamas loved them too much and were too stable.
Compare their situation to Mike or Bodie. They were in the streets to make their mamas proud. I’ll say this to Namond and Dee. Namond decided to be a man at 14 and turn his back on his mama to save his self. Dee was childish til the end
I can’t judge cause both situations were less than ideal. Namond just wasn’t as insulated. lol I’m sure it was much easier to get out when Bodie your #1 vs Avon
@@theregalbunch9506 Namond's Mom didn't love him. She saw him as a surrogate Man of the House that was supposed to be the new Wee-Bey.
Dee's Mom loved him, but a lot of it was tied to what he did to benefit Avon's organization.
I don't think it was a matter of Namond turning his back on his Mother, he just realized that he wasn't built for the family biz. Dee realized that, too, although later on in his short life.
Namond and D’Angelo grew up privileged although they grew up in a family of criminals. They’re elders spoiled them when they should’ve toughened them up at an early age, so they’d understand what they were expected to do and have the guts and the street smarts to carry it out. Look at Michael Corleone. His father the Don didn’t want him to be a gangster, but he was wise enough to train in his son in his ways and his life so that when he was called upon by the family to lead them he could and we all know what kind of Don he turned out to be. Much wiser than Sonny and much wealthier than Vito.

Peace and Happy New Year.
@ a man’s world, the more I watch the wire the more new stuff you learn, when you said the part about Marlo and stringer doesn’t have a family background just shows that they are the within the same person. Maybe if we would’ve got another season of the wire they would’ve showed marlo with all his money still being part of the game but playing it so safe and from a distance he doesn’t get caught. Marlo smart enough to play it that way. And the fact he has lots of money he doesn’t necessarily have to fight having the corners
I stay looking for that new artwork thumbnail of The Wire.

Journalists like gus are a dime per bar of gold. Rare, incredibly rare.
D'Angelo wasn't cut out for the game and even back then Baltimore was known for people just killing so he may have had a right to be paranoid with some dude coming at him. They always talked about DC having the highest murder rate but Baltimore was more ferocious about it!
