What If We Dig a Tunnel Under the Ocean?

  • Whatever reason you just need to urgently cross the ocean. The problem can be solved with the help of a tunnel that would allow various kinds of transport to move freely from Europe to the USA. Such structures are no longer a novelty we now have a tunnel under the amor river in China. Thus a Khan tunnel in Japan travels under the sea the cross Harbor tunnel between the island of Hong Kong and Mainland China in comparison with the gargantuan tunnel which will have to be dug from Europe to America these will all seem like tiny little underwater

I see this vid more as a debunking of the question itself. He doesn't even go into detail about actually, despite all risks and uncertainties for the business plan, gathering 12 trillion dollars. The idea itself is just theoretical at best, and until all of these issues can be solved with a 99.9% security, the idea won't even exist to begin with. The hyperloop that he poses as a light at the end of the tunnel is also facing tons of difficulties, and has a ton of natural elements involved that messes with the tube.

Even with that high standards, you can see plenty of videos of them failing. A project like this would simply have to be made at 100% fail-proof standards.

This is not taken into consideration either, nor is the shifting of the tectonic plates or volcanic activity or cave systems or wildlife or really much of anything. The only focus on wildlife was the possiblility of fuels releasing harmful things, but this doesnt include the huge shift in habitat that a giant tube running through the ocean would have, or if that tube were to broke and release whatever components it had into the ocean.

A vacuum chamber going stretching 5000km would be like the largest ticking time-bomb ever. As well as it being under water, under that tremendous pressure already, any slight dent in the surface would be compounded exponentially. A tube with the radius to 10m and 5000km long would be 1,500,000 cubic meters of vacuum, and to put that in comparison, the largest vacuum chamber in the world is 22,000 cubic meters (1.5% of what's being proposed here). One bomb at the start of this thing would send a 5000km long shockwave going the speed of sound across the whole thing. It's FAR better to not have a vacuum chamber and go slower than to suck that much air out of a tube.

I love how the most daunting challenge of an ocean floor tunnel is completely glossed over. Lol The Scale and frequency of oceanic earthquakes is mind boggling, and to run from London to New York would put the tunnel going through numerous different tectonic plates that are constantly grinding against each other and shifting. Google Fault Offset.
There is a gallery of bridges, roads, and railroads shifted by moving plates in the earth's crust. Now picture that, but under thousands of feet of crushing water pressure with moving passenger trains.
Even if your magical tunnel could survive the earthquake itself, could it survive shifting tectonic plates, that misalign the tunnel's segments?

Now I'm no geologist, but there is that pesky problem of the Mid Atlantic Ridge severing the tunnel as soon as those two tectonic plates shift.

Why not space travel? London to New York, you shoot up to the atmosphere and come back down gliding? Like an airplane just we get to see outer space.

Andreas Zahn Yes but the reason of this video was not that what would be the best way to make it across the atlantic, It was that what IF we built a tunnel under the ocean.

What about the shifting of tectonic plates? It would rip the tunnel in half. Also there is the mid oceanic ridge where the earth's plates are spreading.
