- In the 1980s, crack-addicted pregnant mothers were prosecuted and the media warned us that a generation of “crack babies” would plague our country. Turns out...they were wrong. Lesson plan for educators: bit.ly/RR-crack-baby

New borns react badly when given drugs or alcohol
Studies say and i quote
"don't do that"
Actually, there aren't any studies. We know for a fact that alcohol is deleterious to a fetus. No ethics board would ever approve of an experiment we already know will cause harm. If it was given the go ahead, you wouldn't be able to get enough pregnant subjects to have a decent sample size.
@@aaronbrown8377 we most certainly do know what the effects of different substances have on newborns, their are more than enough cases of babies being born addicted to drugs to have good sample sizes. Obviously using any substance when pregnant is detrimental to the baby's health. There are many factors deciding just how dangerous however, such ad type of drug(or alcohol) all the way to length of use and how often/close to birth did the mothers abuse said substances. Either way, if a pregnant mother uses substances while pregnant they should be charged with child abuse. On the other side if an addict finds out they are pregnant and want to quit on behalf of their children then more power to them, let's get them all the help they can need!
i was born in ‘93 and was a crack baby. was left to the state & adopted a couple years later. this is important
God bless you. My grandma used to be one of the “huggers” for drug addicted babies.
Stay strong 💞
The doctors neglected to express that neonates born prematurely or low birth weight are at risk for developmental delays and learning difficulties thus using cocaine or crack can negatively impact a child’s health - just not to the hysterical levels it was reported.

This is a FANTASTIC series...although this was a tough watch😢

@@RETROREPORTDo you have some more videos on CIA/mkultra etc.?
Regardless of the substance, any substance abuse as a pregnant mother should be treated as child abuse. That being said, if an addict finds out she is pregnant and looks for help more power to her, and there are programs for this. I was around drugs for a long time and nothing made me more upset than when a pregnant mother would continue using their drug of choice, they should be punished and charged with child abuse. To the mothers that stopped turned to their doctors for help and gave up everything for their babies, God bless!
You can't just stop. You dint understand till happens to you
@@misty3043 yes we know you can't just stop but its still child abuse. many women get sober because of pregnancy. this is coming from a former addict been to rehab multiple times. so yes i do understand.
Punishment doesn’t always equal rehabilitation.
Now with roe v wade gone the numbers are gonna skyrocket
@@Lordnixie yeah for sure. These people should be allowed to murder their babies legally!
I'm loving this series. Watched maybe 10 today alone.
Tina's baby 10? HA! I watched 17 today alone😏
"Overwhelmed by simple eye contact with the mother" - Well of course, she's a crackhead. Everyone is overwhelmed by that.
🤣🤣🤣
Fantastic, you're following the same logic as the initial bad science.
Infants cry at anything involving learning
No matter how many times I hear it, your theme/intro song is simply amazing. It always pumps me for the story which will be told :)
This is a great summary of the panic surrounding this issue. I will be sharing this with the Criminal Justice class I'm teaching now about Moral Panics, as this is a great example and an excellent description of the problem, its effects, and its aftermath.
Did you say MORAL PANICS?! We have an entire playlist on moral panics: ruclips.net/video/ohteWYlMtyk/видео.html
I was more surprised that women on cocaine went to the doctor
those wall street secretaries have health insurance y'know
Where else would they be able to give birth in America
Everybody lied to me when I was a kid! Where are my flying cars and crack babies???
Now the opioid addiction has surpassed crack. Makes you wonder what is it going to be in 20 years from now? 🙏🏽
Luckily opioids are far less damaging.
What that did was make people accuse parents of disabled kids as addicts ,& that they were to blame
I’m so happy you covered this!
And happy that it wasn’t the horrible epidemic they claimed it would be ❤
Yesss thanks for the upload 💕
Excellent! Thank you for this important reporting!

Excellent channel!
I've been binge watching today.
Recently we've been receiving a lot of "binge watching Retro Report" comments -- and we LOVE it!
Yeah me too. Just found then today and can't put it down.
It is good to see and hear (the sfx and bg) New York Times’ Retro Report again.
Crack babies are real but people definitely overreacted. I know some kids that were exposed to drugs and alcohol as fetuses and they are definitely not “normal” and never will be, but they definitely aren’t nearly as bad as these people said. They go to school like normal people and can hold conversations to an extent. It’s certainly not an ideal situation and I can wholly see why one should change someone for inflicting such birth defects on their children, but that applies to any parents who abuse substances while their children are in the womb.
"Drugs and alcohol" isn't crack babies. Every single substance is going to have a different impact on a developing fetus. Alcohol has more detrimental, and different, effects on babies than cocaine does, or heroin, or Xanax. Crack, in the end, was not found to have nearly the impact initially reported (and absolutely not the impact of more common drugs, like alcohol), and demonizing pregnant addicts did no help to them or their babies. Charging them doesn't get them the help they need, and taking minority women's babies away willy-nilly causes attachment disorders and lifelong emotional problems.
Callie S I see where you’re coming from, but I find irresponsible at best that a mother who actively uses drugs and alcohol during pregnancy would be allowed to have full time custody of her children, regardless of race.
right but with addiction it would just make the state take care of those kids and the state sucks at taking care of special needs children
Gin True. Issues like these seldom have simple solutions.
Fetal alcohol exposure can cause lifetime devastating consequences.
A baby doesn’t have the psychological ability to be addicted to anything. Use the correct term which is dependent.
My fiancé was born addicted to coke but he’s mentally healthier then my self
Doing drugs while pregnant is child abuse tho
Arresting and jailing women who are addicted to drugs doesn't help those kids. They get tossed into the foster system, where they lose out on necessary bonding and develop attachment disorders. Blaming addicts, like these women just decided to do crack for kicks, is not helping anyone. It's only further stigmatizing pregnant addicts and makes them less likely to tell doctors and staff about their use, keeping them and their kids from actually getting the care they need. It isn't child abuse, its being sick.
It is abusive and harmful toward the children, but it's not really something you can solve through the legal system. It's important to keep in mind that many of these pregnant women who became drug addicts aren't just stupid and irresponsible. Many probably came from families of addicts, where they grew up surrounded by drug use, or became pregnant accidentally without access to safe abortion or birth control (which happens to poor women a lot). What I'm saying is that there are a lot of factors that go into drug use and pregnancy, which do not just boil down to a women being stupid and irresponsible, and people need to understand that. A lot of my friends were born to parents on drugs, and I know that none of them would have been better off if their mothers had been imprisoned. What would've helped was better social services and support, but whether or not someone thinks drug addict parents deserve those services and support often comes down to how they view the parents themselves; either as people who made bad choices but were also severely disadvantaged by circumstance, or as stupid people who just decided to have a kid and didn't want to stop using drugs. In general, drug addicted parents fall into the first category.
Nick Young but Abortion is legal
hi pumkineater69 abortion IS technically legal, but often difficult to get for poor women, and women in certain areas. I'm not sure about the situation back then, but today there are some states where extremely harsh and unnecessary regulations have been passed on abortion clinics so that only a sparse few are left, and now there are some states with no abortion clinics at all. If you can't make the trip because you're too young to drive, or you don't have the money, or your family would become suspicious and abusive if you left, (all situations a young woman who fell victim to addiction might find herself in) then that makes access to safe abortion significantly harder. It's one of those rights that exists on paper, but material access to it is limited.
This stuff is so prevalent in Kentucky. I see it almost daily. Here it's criminal to do this now.
5:08 I love her.
My nephew was born addicted to coke. Hes still suffering.
That's terrible! Of course push that alcohol is the most awful thing a person can do to their unborn child just look at their babies when their born🤦♀️😒
Was this re-uploaded...?
We did an update on this story, but somehow the original was misplaced, so when we finally found it we decided to upload.

Yes the stay in low vibes they destroy or some still fight against all odds
maybe just don’t do cocaine?
Axel Lewis the way they were explaining people doing cocaine, they weren’t really referring to it as an addiction. so it kinda seems like all these people were just doing cocaine for fun, i know this isn’t the case it’s just the way they were saying it lol
Theres a lot of dumb people.
There’s no doubt that it could. Another way of justifying women’s action lol smh. Women are guilty what they do as well. Yes get help but don’t think that you don’t know what you’re doing. But glad that it didn’t affect these babies tho.
Government sold it
I work at a doctors office and we had a grandma take her granddaughter in and the granddaughter had many physical and mental defects! So sad, and the mother was in jail for drug charges still! The granddaughter was about 14 and she was shaky, nervous, and very socially awkward! So sad!

More like push war on women. Same with the "opioid crisis ". Scare tactics to push more invasive laws on women. If it's such an issue then why not track down the father's who willfully impregnated a crack or heroin addict?
