Another list that Bone Tomahawk could have been on!! I know it ends with a few survivors making their way home and Kurt Russell finishes his "mission" to take out the last three Trog-Dogs BUT... 1. Kurt Russell is still left to die after being shot in the arm and gut AND has a flask hanging out of his gut after a Trog cut his belly open and jammed the flask (that was IN the fire) into the wound 2. Arthur is SURE to lose his leg or even die of infection 3. With no food or horses, the survivors will likely die on their journey home anyway 4. Just as we're all happy that there's three survivors and Kurt Russell has his absolutely beautiful, heart-wrenching final words with Chicory... The survivors walk past the two Troglodyte women. The women are ALIVE, very pregnant, have had their arms and legs cut off AND have wooden spikes driven in their eyes to blind them. Just the most harrowing, horrific, and depraved image to make you think of how many Troglodyte women have been thru that instead of having happy ending thoughts!
The first movie in this video: It's stupid. He has to choose to kill his wife or one of his kids. First bit of stupidity is his random way of doing it, causing fear and terror in all his family members. Second, it should have been the wife. A mother would willingly sacrifice herself to save her children. This guiy should have known that.
Would you rather - after everything the main character goes through to save her brother, including getting shocked, almost drowning, watching others die and murdering another, she comes home to find her sick brother dead.
What's even worse is that the other guy who was with her at the end (I think he was a doctor???) could have lived too if she had just walked away. Of course she didn't know about her brother but it would have been better if she did. I'm glad you mentioned it though really is a great movie
The distance she always has between her and her daughter even in the last scene is so sad. Jessie's death isn't something she couldn't get over.. It was something she didn't want to get over. I think that trip was a subconscious suicide mission for her. She wants to be dead and be with Jessie again.
This is a great list. I will never forget how I felt after the ending of Eden Lake. I never thought a movie could purposefully leave you feeling angered without losing its value...

That poor girls screams as they murder her off screen in the bathroom still haunt me & i've never been able to rewatch that movie since.

Teenage boys attack with the intent to kill a couple, the woman kills one of them, and the parents then try to killer her out of revenge but also cover up their evil kids, now that is just depressing.
I feel sorry for the two boys who tried to go against the herd. She killed one because she was scared, I mean, I don't blame her. The other they killed by setting him on fire. The ones that were left were evil little b*****ds, unfortunately for the woman they would never have believed her even with the proof which the kid deleted off of his phone.

I personally think The Girl Next Door has one of the saddest ending. After everything Meg went through, David finally manages to put an end to her torment but she dies any. What's worse is its inspired on a true story
If it's any consolation, they actually made the movie NICER than the real events. In reality, there was no David. There was nobody who helped her and nobody with an ounce of a conscience. Her only supporter was her sister who could do nothing to help her for fear of being tortured too. Even some of the torture she endured irl wasn't involved in the film like the various objects they would insert in her you-know-what. When you actually have to go out of your way to make a movie less traumatising than the reality, that's how you know the real events were fucked up. I actually cried at the end of the movie once I researched it. I remember reading that the sister checked the obituaries religiously, waiting to see the name of Gertrude (the Aunt). When she finally saw her name come up, she clipped it and mailed it to her mum with the message "Some good news. Damn old Gertrude died. Ha ha ha! I am happy about that". Plus, the house where she was tortured is now a car park for a church. They wanted to turn it into a women's shelter or something like that based on the various charities made in Sylvia's (Meg) name but they didn't have enough funds so instead it's a car park. For some reason, that feels like an extra punch to the gut. ALSO, Gertrude (the Aunt) only served three years in prison of what was meant to be life imprisonment and got to live another 5 years essentially free before she passed away. Hope there's something worse than Hell that waited for that bitch :)
I seen this movie when it came out and I still think about it from time to time. Just brutal and im pretty sure its on a short list of movies I wish I hadn't watched.
It was shown that it wasn't all for nothing in the ending when the Lead Cultist woman kills herself after finally getting her answer about what was waiting on the other side. Obviously, whatever was waiting she wanted to get there quickly so in the end, the lead girl who's suffered all this time will also go there too. Whatever is there is obviously exactly what the cultist woman hoped for which is likely something good.
@@MihaelLawliet01 Interesting, I interpreted it as pretty ambiguous. I saw it as the leader seeing the torture as a necessary means to reach an end: the truth. The moment she learns the truth she either kills herself to achieve post-life or takes her own life because all she believed was a lie or that continuing the torture will lead to a complete opposite way. But it could also be that I'm just really bad at reading situations and assumed an open ending on something that seems kinda obvious with a different perspective.

Yep. I was a horror fan years before I saw Night of the Living Dead the first time but I had never witnessed such a bleak ending. Just stared at the screen with my mouth open and couldn't believe it can end like that.
Oh God yes. After watching poor Ben fight so hard throughout the film and becoming so invested in him only to have my heart torn from my chest and ruthlessly stomped on.
The most hits to top of my list for this category. The Fly kinda drops off this list for me, it’s quite clear early on what is going to happen to him. With the Mist there is a convincing level of hope, then to hopelessness, then the gut punch of tragedy.
The Lodge is another one with a fugged up ending. Oculus and The Mist as well even though those are featured in like 30 lists on this channel and hundreds of others.
Tristan Singleton-Finally watched The Lodge a few months back, great movie but seriously messed up. I'd heard The Lodge was supposed to be really disturbing but I was not prepared for how bleak & soul crushing the movie turned out to be, especially that ending.
and the thing about the lodge is that it's just slowly crushing your soul, like you're going insane alongside the main character. it was really unnerving. definitely something i couldn't watch alone and had to call someone over to finish it 🤣

I Saw The Devil is a brilliant film,blurring the lines between who’s good and who’s worse. It is extremely violent. It makes the Saw franchise seem like children’s films it’s not torture porn though it’s got a true depth and meaning whilst breaking teeth with hammers
Saw itself is not torture porn and has way more depth than 99% of other horror/thriller sagas. If you focus on just one aspect, you miss out on the other...

I Saw the Devil is without a doubt one of the best films ever made and will forever be in my top five. The plot, the acting and that gut-wrenching ending are just perfect. I Saw the Devil, The Wailing and Memoirs of a Murder are the paramount of Korean cinema.
Loved the Wailing and I Saw The Devil did not like Memories of Murder. Didn’t like that they didn’t catch the murder. The Wailikg is my favorite Asian movie of all time though

Absolutely. It's absolutely the last thing I saw coming. I assumed everything would be OK for the girl and her brother, but that she would be scarred for life at what she'd seen and done at the mansion.
I knew a guy years ago who was an Aussie. His uncle had a big farm. We were supposed to help with the harvest. We were gonna fly out. Suddenly his uncle stopped sending letters. A few months went by. He called his cousin to check on them. He drove two days to see them, and they were gone. Door open, crops overgrown, livestock wandering around. No trace, no evidence. 6 people, gone.
I will never forget when I first watched Eden Lake, to this day I still sit and think about it. I have never felt so angry at a movie ending, it was a whole other feeling with that movie.
That ending should have been an alternate ending. The real ending should have been one of the kids turned on the crazy lead boy, called the police they turned up just as she about to get locked in the bathroom. It could have been like the ending to lord of the flies (remake) where the naval Office is like “What are you guys doing?”

I did not expect Eden lake to be on here but I’m soo glad it made the top spot. Also Woolfs creek has to be there the guy literally gets tortured and when he is finally free ends up being labelled a crazy person with the killer being free to continue.
@Margo Turney. No it didn’t, neither version was hopeless. The theatrical ending was about Mike realising his errors and not complying to the rooms tricks, so Mike ended up sacrificing himself rather than giving in the rooms tricks, that is a hopeful ending. The directors ending was Mike being saved after he realises the error of his ways, so that’s also a hopeful ending. If 1408 had a hopeless ending it would’ve ended with Mike giving in to the room and hanging himself.
@@nu-metalfan2654 Almost all of Stephen King's movies are different from the books. Most notably Trucks and Maximum Overdrive. You should read the story. It's really good. He is my favorite author, and his short story books are fantastic. I love his work.
The Vanishing ending has haunted me since I was a small boy. Woke up late one night on the sofa just in time for one of the scariest scenes in film history. Plus I had the flue. Being ill and scared at the same time is not a good combination.
He's been a gifted actor since day one. It takes a really good film and script to bring it out of him though. Not the cheesy action stuff but the gritty ones. Killing of a sacred deer, The Lobster, A Winters Tale. All really great films he was amazing in
I saw the devil was definitely awesome, in a f’ked up depressing way. The dude should’ve just taken the killer the first time and set up a torture room he couldn’t get out of. After slowly torturing him for months he should’ve THEN set up the guillotine and the subsequent beheading in front of his family.
Nice list! But for me..."The Mist" has the most heart breaking ending scene I've ever seen; because... it's totally unexpected! "Eden Lake" was a derailed rollercoaster of tragedies and hopelesness; like a slow cooking pot of unfortunated events. So that ending.., was just the cherry on top.
the mist is awful and has an awful ending, they all decide to kill themselves for no reason, they seem to have this belief that whatever will kill them is much worse but most of the other deaths were instant so I'm not sure where they got that from, then to top it off the not only does he not shoot himself the mist suddenly clears for no reason whatsoever to reveal tanks he couldn't hear somehow despite being seconds away after he gets out of the car, absolutely stupid.
The Mist and It are great endings, as you mentioned, but forgot Cabin in the Woods. The final moment of the flick is giant gods awakening to kill everyone on Earth.
If you are the parents of a troubled teen, I recommend inviting some of his friends over on a Saturday night, getting a keg of beer and a few pizzas and all watch EDEN LAKE. Maybe afterwards, show them your gun collection.
This is the first time in any horror list that Eden Lake has been on it let alone been given the appreciation it deserves for that ending. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days, especially since it's not an outlandish outcome for this day and age.
We Need to Talk About Kevin. The ending to that movie is so depressing and sad, especially since it is very realistic and there’s so many cases I can think of now that remind me of it, the biggest one I will say below (but I am warning SPOILERS AHEAD just in case someone doesn’t want to know) The case that is similar to this movie is Paris Bennett. He brutally murdered his 4 year old little sister when he was 13 out of spite for his mother. There’s a 911 call he made explaining that he stabbed her for a bizarre reason (I think he said demons told him to) and then he is bawling his eyes out and performing CPR while on the phone with the 911 operator but it turns out that he was never doing CPR. He was just walking around pretending to do it and was fake crying as well. He will be eligible for parole in 2027. His mother still talks to him sometimes but she has said that she is terrified of him whenever he gets released and how she isn’t sure if she should tell him where she lives. So this movie I mentioned has similarities in this case but it also has a lot more stuff as well. In this movie, Kevin not only kills his little sister, but also his dad and his classmates at school. If you like the type of horror movie with a lot of gore, deep meaning, and “south destroying endings” I truly recommend the movie “Martyrs”, 2008, the original French film. If you’re not too fond of gore the remake of the same name, released in 2015 has less gore but still conveys the message, but I like the original better. Trust me, the movie will stick with you forever.
I've been recommending that one as well (the original, not the remake!) :D If you're looking for something bizarre, disturbing, and unique but have already seen Martyrs I'd suggest The House that Jack Built :)

I do not think Pan's Labyrinth is a soul crushing ending. Ophelia sacrifices herself, only to be rewarded with a form of immortality in a fairytale like kingdom. That's a good ending to me. Now, Devil's backbone is a more upsetting ending. Since you realize. Chances are those kids will not reach a town or safety before the die from exhaustion, dehydration, and sun stroke.
The ending of Hereditary was soul crushing in that such a good movie had such an AWFUL fucking ending! It went from a genuinely intense horror movie with amazing atmosphere to a few cliche jump scares with embarrassingly bad CGI and a more funny than creepy naked cult scene.
@@dfhellraiser4td disagree. To me it was a logical progression and crowning of what the whole movie was leading to. CGI with the glowy stuff (spirits leaving the bodies and whatnot) were kinda weir but nothing that would break immersion. I really like how it held no punches and the ending was the fucking heymaker. The sawing sound was really unnerving.
I wouldn't call The Witch soul crushing. Thomasin's abusive family all die and she gets a shitload of power after joining Black Phillip. It's dark, sure, but not really depressing or soul crushing.
There are a lot of movies that could be on this list. I'm going to just throw out a few here: Rosemary's Baby, Jeepers Creepers, The Orphanage, Dr Sleep, The Descent, The Skeleton Key, Dawn of the Dead(remake)
There's a lot of weird, *better* omissions acknowledged in the video, like The Mist, Funny Games, The Wicker Man (original), and others I feel deserve spots like Night of the Living Dead (original), Hereditary, The VVitch, Upgrade, mother!, Dogtooth, The Ring, I could even make a case for The Lobster, really anything Yorgos has an ending dark, subtle, and shocking enough to REALLY stay with you. Most A24 movies also have a good shot, like It Comes At Night and Saint Maud. I shouldn't forget Midsommer or Climax either. While we're on Gasper Noe, his Irreversible has more a shocking middle that breaks you that it lets you come down from while emotionally wearing you down the rest of the film. Lars Von Trier has destroyed me most with Dancer In The Dark, though that's not really horror. AntiChrist and The House That Jack Built are though.
Should have been titled "Lame Horror Movies (and some others which are not horror movies at all) because either we have atrocious tastes, or we didn't have enough money to buy the rights for really good ones except Body Snatchers". Shameful video.
About 10 years ago I saw the movie Dread (2009) for the first time and its such a bleak film and the ending is just leaves you with this horrible feeling I was in a funk for the rest of the day because of it.
Just watched ‘the Mist’ with my younger sister (11) and it was hilarious to watch her face as the tanks started to role out of the mist at the end. Told her the moral of the story was to always be patient.
The Wicker Man, The Witch, and Rosemary's Baby all gave me chills like no movies before -- and while it's ending was at least positive, The Children of the Corn gave me haunted chills also
Well I didn't, but that's only because I'm on medication that makes it impossible for me to find things sad anymore. But I recognize the difference between sad endings and endings where the characters have gone through hell, but will survive. To me, that classifies the difference.

Eden Lake... the DVD is on my shelf for many years now but I have yet to watch it. Let’s say, I was intrigued by the premise when I bought it.. but subsequently repulsed by what I was informed about the sadistic ending, I kinda let it stay on the self until now. I have been hearing this title on so many lists I practically feel that I have seen the movie already. I probably will watch it one day, but I probably won’t. The same goes for I Saw the Devil. As much as I am concerned, OLD BOY is the furthest boundary I can go. Anything more than that will be pushing too far.
My favorite thing about Dagon was that Spanish actress that played the lead villain! With the painted skin and the costume, she was creepy beautiful, and those huge buggy eyes made her frightening! :) India Eisley on Curse of Sleeping Beauty bears a strong resemblance to this character as well!
I watched Eden Lake many tears ago. I can still feel the horrid atmosphere they expertly created for this movie. I absolutely hated it, but can well appreciate the work that went into it.
I've seen others in this section list The Mist, Martyrs, and Drag Me to Hell and I feel all three belong on the list. Two that I haven't seen listed but should be are the original Wicker Man and A Serbian Film. The Wicker Man's ending is truly haunting. The juxtaposition of the pagans cheerily singing their harvest song while Sgt. Howie sings the 23rd Psalm, then prays, and finally starts screaming as he starts to burn is one of the most disturbing endings to any movie I've ever watched. When I first watched A Serbian Film, I thought the ending was the most depressing I'd ever seen. Then I saw the 2nd version with the scene added on just before the credits roll and realized they managed to find a way to make the ending even worse.
@@germanus2 The first cut ended after hearing three gunshots while the house was on screen, insinuating the main character killed his wife and son and then himself to save them all from the memories of what they had just endured. The picture goes black, then the credits roll. The second version is the same, but then after about 30 sec of credits, we go back into the main character's bedroom where we see that their deaths were filmed by the same people who put them through hell, presumably as the ending for the snuf-porno they were making.
The supposedly "soul destroying" ending of "The Gift" would be easily resolved with a DNA test of the baby, lol. Seriously, you guys kinda reached with that one.
The Rental was a really great movie. I'll never forget it. It was so uncomfortable and stressful the whole time, I love movies about people being watched without their knowledge.
eden lake was INSANE!!!!!! i was in shock when she ran to that house.. i KNEW it was the parents... they look like them SOOOOO much great casting!!! Basically Martin tells Steven exactly what's going to happen and it starts happening. There are tests run at the hospital with no obvious explanations for paralysis so it's not like Stevens first thought is killing his family. He is very skeptical
There is a true story like the movie Inside. Of course it isn't quite as gory and the woman makes it out alive with her child, but she really was attacked and the other woman did try to steal her baby after delivering it with a pair of scissors.

The distance she always has between her and her daughter even in the last scene is so sad. Jessie's death isn't something she couldn't get over.. It was something she didn't want to get over. I think that trip was a subconscious suicide mission for her. She wants to be dead and be with Jessie again.

Teenage boys attack with the intent to kill a couple, the woman kills one of them, and the parents then try to killer her out of revenge but also cover up their evil kids, now that is just depressing.
I feel sorry for the two boys who tried to go against the herd. She killed one because she was scared, I mean, I don't blame her. The other they killed by setting him on fire. The ones that were left were evil little b*****ds, unfortunately for the woman they would never have believed her even with the proof which the kid deleted off of his phone.

If it's any consolation, they actually made the movie NICER than the real events. In reality, there was no David. There was nobody who helped her and nobody with an ounce of a conscience. Her only supporter was her sister who could do nothing to help her for fear of being tortured too. Even some of the torture she endured irl wasn't involved in the film like the various objects they would insert in her you-know-what. When you actually have to go out of your way to make a movie less traumatising than the reality, that's how you know the real events were fucked up. I actually cried at the end of the movie once I researched it. I remember reading that the sister checked the obituaries religiously, waiting to see the name of Gertrude (the Aunt). When she finally saw her name come up, she clipped it and mailed it to her mum with the message "Some good news. Damn old Gertrude died. Ha ha ha! I am happy about that". Plus, the house where she was tortured is now a car park for a church. They wanted to turn it into a women's shelter or something like that based on the various charities made in Sylvia's (Meg) name but they didn't have enough funds so instead it's a car park. For some reason, that feels like an extra punch to the gut. ALSO, Gertrude (the Aunt) only served three years in prison of what was meant to be life imprisonment and got to live another 5 years essentially free before she passed away. Hope there's something worse than Hell that waited for that bitch :)
Another good addition for me is Martyrs. The ending leaving you wondering if all the suffering was for nothing is really bleak.

I seen this movie when it came out and I still think about it from time to time. Just brutal and im pretty sure its on a short list of movies I wish I hadn't watched.
It was shown that it wasn't all for nothing in the ending when the Lead Cultist woman kills herself after finally getting her answer about what was waiting on the other side. Obviously, whatever was waiting she wanted to get there quickly so in the end, the lead girl who's suffered all this time will also go there too. Whatever is there is obviously exactly what the cultist woman hoped for which is likely something good.
@@MihaelLawliet01 Interesting, I interpreted it as pretty ambiguous. I saw it as the leader seeing the torture as a necessary means to reach an end: the truth. The moment she learns the truth she either kills herself to achieve post-life or takes her own life because all she believed was a lie or that continuing the torture will lead to a complete opposite way.
But it could also be that I'm just really bad at reading situations and assumed an open ending on something that seems kinda obvious with a different perspective.

Yep. I was a horror fan years before I saw Night of the Living Dead the first time but I had never witnessed such a bleak ending. Just stared at the screen with my mouth open and couldn't believe it can end like that.

Tristan Singleton-Finally watched The Lodge a few months back, great movie but seriously messed up. I'd heard The Lodge was supposed to be really disturbing but I was not prepared for how bleak & soul crushing the movie turned out to be, especially that ending.
and the thing about the lodge is that it's just slowly crushing your soul, like you're going insane alongside the main character. it was really unnerving. definitely something i couldn't watch alone and had to call someone over to finish it 🤣

I Saw The Devil is a brilliant film,blurring the lines between who’s good and who’s worse. It is extremely violent. It makes the Saw franchise seem like children’s films it’s not torture porn though it’s got a true depth and meaning whilst breaking teeth with hammers

I Saw the Devil is without a doubt one of the best films ever made and will forever be in my top five. The plot, the acting and that gut-wrenching ending are just perfect. I Saw the Devil, The Wailing and Memoirs of a Murder are the paramount of Korean cinema.
Loved the Wailing and I Saw The Devil did not like Memories of Murder. Didn’t like that they didn’t catch the murder. The Wailikg is my favorite Asian movie of all time though

I knew a guy years ago who was an Aussie. His uncle had a big farm. We were supposed to help with the harvest. We were gonna fly out. Suddenly his uncle stopped sending letters. A few months went by. He called his cousin to check on them. He drove two days to see them, and they were gone. Door open, crops overgrown, livestock wandering around. No trace, no evidence. 6 people, gone.
Movies like "Wolf Creek" scare me the most because those movies could be completely real. And that is what is terrifying.

@Margo Turney. No it didn’t, neither version was hopeless. The theatrical ending was about Mike realising his errors and not complying to the rooms tricks, so Mike ended up sacrificing himself rather than giving in the rooms tricks, that is a hopeful ending. The directors ending was Mike being saved after he realises the error of his ways, so that’s also a hopeful ending.
If 1408 had a hopeless ending it would’ve ended with Mike giving in to the room and hanging himself.

@@nu-metalfan2654 Almost all of Stephen King's movies are different from the books. Most notably Trucks and Maximum Overdrive. You should read the story. It's really good. He is my favorite author, and his short story books are fantastic. I love his work.
The Vanishing ending has haunted me since I was a small boy. Woke up late one night on the sofa just in time for one of the scariest scenes in film history. Plus I had the flue. Being ill and scared at the same time is not a good combination.

He's been a gifted actor since day one. It takes a really good film and script to bring it out of him though. Not the cheesy action stuff but the gritty ones. Killing of a sacred deer, The Lobster, A Winters Tale. All really great films he was amazing in
I would definitely recommend watching "The North Water", a miniseries. He is amazing in it and somewhat hard to recognize too.
The 70s Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Sutherland was amazing and had chills going down my spine in the end. Totally awesome movie ending.

I saw the devil was definitely awesome, in a f’ked up depressing way. The dude should’ve just taken the killer the first time and set up a torture room he couldn’t get out of. After slowly torturing him for months he should’ve THEN set up the guillotine and the subsequent beheading in front of his family.

the mist is awful and has an awful ending, they all decide to kill themselves for no reason, they seem to have this belief that whatever will kill them is much worse but most of the other deaths were instant so I'm not sure where they got that from, then to top it off the not only does he not shoot himself the mist suddenly clears for no reason whatsoever to reveal tanks he couldn't hear somehow despite being seconds away after he gets out of the car, absolutely stupid.
He doesn't have to wonder about who the baby's father is that's what they have DNA test for.
If he goes for a DNa test, he will have to tell his wife she was raped by the guy he let into their home.
The Mist and It are great endings, as you mentioned, but forgot Cabin in the Woods. The final moment of the flick is giant gods awakening to kill everyone on Earth.
If you are the parents of a troubled teen, I recommend inviting some of his friends over on a Saturday night, getting a keg of beer and a few pizzas and all watch EDEN LAKE. Maybe afterwards, show them your gun collection.
This is the first time in any horror list that Eden Lake has been on it let alone been given the appreciation it deserves for that ending. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days, especially since it's not an outlandish outcome for this day and age.
Collin Farrell was awesome in In Bruge. I remember being surprised with how good he was.

We Need to Talk About Kevin. The ending to that movie is so depressing and sad, especially since it is very realistic and there’s so many cases I can think of now that remind me of it, the biggest one I will say below (but I am warning SPOILERS AHEAD just in case someone doesn’t want to know)
The case that is similar to this movie is Paris Bennett. He brutally murdered his 4 year old little sister when he was 13 out of spite for his mother. There’s a 911 call he made explaining that he stabbed her for a bizarre reason (I think he said demons told him to) and then he is bawling his eyes out and performing CPR while on the phone with the 911 operator but it turns out that he was never doing CPR. He was just walking around pretending to do it and was fake crying as well.
He will be eligible for parole in 2027. His mother still talks to him sometimes but she has said that she is terrified of him whenever he gets released and how she isn’t sure if she should tell him where she lives.
So this movie I mentioned has similarities in this case but it also has a lot more stuff as well. In this movie, Kevin not only kills his little sister, but also his dad and his classmates at school. He did this to hurt his mother.

If you like the type of horror movie with a lot of gore, deep meaning, and “south destroying endings” I truly recommend the movie “Martyrs”, 2008, the original French film. If you’re not too fond of gore the remake of the same name, released in 2015 has less gore but still conveys the message, but I like the original better. Trust me, the movie will stick with you forever.
I've been recommending that one as well (the original, not the remake!) :D If you're looking for something bizarre, disturbing, and unique but have already seen Martyrs I'd suggest The House that Jack Built :)

I do not think Pan's Labyrinth is a soul crushing ending. Ophelia sacrifices herself, only to be rewarded with a form of immortality in a fairytale like kingdom. That's a good ending to me. Now, Devil's backbone is a more upsetting ending. Since you realize. Chances are those kids will not reach a town or safety before the die from exhaustion, dehydration, and sun stroke.
Pan's Labyrinth wasn't bleak; it was sad but also happy at lest for Ophelia

The ending of Hereditary was soul crushing in that such a good movie had such an AWFUL fucking ending! It went from a genuinely intense horror movie with amazing atmosphere to a few cliche jump scares with embarrassingly bad CGI and a more funny than creepy naked cult scene.
@@dfhellraiser4td disagree. To me it was a logical progression and crowning of what the whole movie was leading to. CGI with the glowy stuff (spirits leaving the bodies and whatnot) were kinda weir but nothing that would break immersion. I really like how it held no punches and the ending was the fucking heymaker. The sawing sound was really unnerving.
I wouldn't call The Witch soul crushing. Thomasin's abusive family all die and she gets a shitload of power after joining Black Phillip. It's dark, sure, but not really depressing or soul crushing.

The ending of "The Descent" was pretty gut wrenching. I'm surprised it didn't make the list.
There are a lot of movies that could be on this list. I'm going to just throw out a few here: Rosemary's Baby, Jeepers Creepers, The Orphanage, Dr Sleep, The Descent, The Skeleton Key, Dawn of the Dead(remake)
There's a lot of weird, *better* omissions acknowledged in the video, like The Mist, Funny Games, The Wicker Man (original), and others I feel deserve spots like Night of the Living Dead (original), Hereditary, The VVitch, Upgrade, mother!, Dogtooth, The Ring, I could even make a case for The Lobster, really anything Yorgos has an ending dark, subtle, and shocking enough to REALLY stay with you. Most A24 movies also have a good shot, like It Comes At Night and Saint Maud. I shouldn't forget Midsommer or Climax either. While we're on Gasper Noe, his Irreversible has more a shocking middle that breaks you that it lets you come down from while emotionally wearing you down the rest of the film. Lars Von Trier has destroyed me most with Dancer In The Dark, though that's not really horror. AntiChrist and The House That Jack Built are though.
I Saw The Devil & Eden Lake definitely deserve spots on the list. Though The VVitch arguably had a positive ending.

Should have been titled "Lame Horror Movies (and some others which are not horror movies at all) because either we have atrocious tastes, or we didn't have enough money to buy the rights for really good ones except Body Snatchers". Shameful video.
About 10 years ago I saw the movie Dread (2009) for the first time and its such a bleak film and the ending is just leaves you with this horrible feeling I was in a funk for the rest of the day because of it.
That one was a fantastic movie too
The idea of using ones biggest fear to torment them is a great concept
Just watched ‘the Mist’ with my younger sister (11) and it was hilarious to watch her face as the tanks started to role out of the mist at the end. Told her the moral of the story was to always be patient.
Open Water 2004, two divers left behind by their tourist dive boat. They survive floating out in the ocean then things take a turn for the worse.
The Wicker Man, The Witch, and Rosemary's Baby all gave me chills like no movies before -- and while it's ending was at least positive, The Children of the Corn gave me haunted chills also
I think that The Apostle should have been on this list
And who can possibly forget the ending of Train to Busan?

Well I didn't, but that's only because I'm on medication that makes it impossible for me to find things sad anymore.
But I recognize the difference between sad endings and endings where the characters have gone through hell, but will survive. To me, that classifies the difference.

I think the ending of the original Saw was pretty soul destroying.
Eden Lake... the DVD is on my shelf for many years now but I have yet to watch it. Let’s say, I was intrigued by the premise when I bought it.. but subsequently repulsed by what I was informed about the sadistic ending, I kinda let it stay on the self until now. I have been hearing this title on so many lists I practically feel that I have seen the movie already. I probably will watch it one day, but I probably won’t. The same goes for I Saw the Devil. As much as I am concerned, OLD BOY is the furthest boundary I can go. Anything more than that will be pushing too far.
Eden Lake is a great movie; you should still watch it

Blue Ruin for me had such a tension building vibe with an explosive ending. Small budget indie but well crafted.
My favorite thing about Dagon was that Spanish actress that played the lead villain! With the painted skin and the costume, she was creepy beautiful, and those huge buggy eyes made her frightening! :) India Eisley on Curse of Sleeping Beauty bears a strong resemblance to this character as well!
I watched Eden Lake many tears ago. I can still feel the horrid atmosphere they expertly created for this movie. I absolutely hated it, but can well appreciate the work that went into it.
I've seen others in this section list The Mist, Martyrs, and Drag Me to Hell and I feel all three belong on the list. Two that I haven't seen listed but should be are the original Wicker Man and A Serbian Film. The Wicker Man's ending is truly haunting. The juxtaposition of the pagans cheerily singing their harvest song while Sgt. Howie sings the 23rd Psalm, then prays, and finally starts screaming as he starts to burn is one of the most disturbing endings to any movie I've ever watched. When I first watched A Serbian Film, I thought the ending was the most depressing I'd ever seen. Then I saw the 2nd version with the scene added on just before the credits roll and realized they managed to find a way to make the ending even worse.

@@germanus2 The first cut ended after hearing three gunshots while the house was on screen, insinuating the main character killed his wife and son and then himself to save them all from the memories of what they had just endured. The picture goes black, then the credits roll. The second version is the same, but then after about 30 sec of credits, we go back into the main character's bedroom where we see that their deaths were filmed by the same people who put them through hell, presumably as the ending for the snuf-porno they were making.
Just learned what mumblecore was and.... yes that is a perfect name for it.
The supposedly "soul destroying" ending of "The Gift" would be easily resolved with a DNA test of the baby, lol. Seriously, you guys kinda reached with that one.

The Rental was a really great movie. I'll never forget it. It was so uncomfortable and stressful the whole time, I love movies about people being watched without their knowledge.
“Vacancy” was similar. Very creepy
eden lake was INSANE!!!!!! i was in shock when she ran to that house.. i KNEW it was the parents... they look like them SOOOOO much great casting!!! WHAT A TWIST!!! poor girl and the worst thing is i KNOW that really happens out there... moat parents would go to ANY lengths to protect their kid, even when theyre wrong...
I feel like one of the most horrific endings is on the movie Found. That movie is seriously effed up in every way. To this day I can't get the images out of my head.
Heredity was a sad ending where all the good guys lose.
I don't think it really compares to most on the list though.

The one about this Sacred Deer flick gets me curious. If you're brainy enough to become a surgeon, you'll have serious rational doubt that a genuine supernatural threat is in effect.
What evidence convinces him of this?
Basically Martin tells Steven exactly what's going to happen and it starts happening. There are tests run at the hospital with no obvious explanations for paralysis so it's not like Stevens first thought is killing his family. He is very skeptical

There is a true story like the movie Inside. Of course it isn't quite as gory and the woman makes it out alive with her child, but she really was attacked and the other woman did try to steal her baby after delivering it with a pair of scissors.
