Another great interview. I love Omo wa Alhaji Rasaq Aladokun for his ever-present candour and for relating his experiences exactly as they were. I am also thankful for him that he was able to use his wisdom to free himself from the shackles that could have left him impoverished by now like so many other former band leaders. May God continue to bless him. As for his age though, there is no way he can be 68 as that'll mean he is only a few years younger than KSA, my friend Special Apostle Matthew Olojede, Abiodun Fatoke, Haji Timmy and others who were much older than him then. As for the Kwara experience that Haji Rasaq referred to, it was late Governor David Bamigboye and the town was Oro Ago near Omun Aran in Kwara State where they played before travelling to Kwara Hotels and a TV studio in Ilorin.

Mr Rasaq Aladokun has spoken very well. He has respect for King Sunny Ade but all his submissions are tailored to his experience when he was with the King Sunny Ade.
We should not discredit his side of his story because of the love many of us have for the King Sunny Ade.
More importantly, King Sunny Ade is also a human being like us and we are all not perfect.
Lessons have been learnt and the upcoming artists should also reflect about his submission for the future sakes.
Thank you so much to Mr Dele Adeyanju and his crew for their efforts to bring our legends in the music industry to the forefront for learning from their mistakes and opportunities.

I didn’t know there is such high level of collaboration in
music performance and production in those days. His analogy with football is apt. I also didn’t know there is a lot of enmity among people in the same band. Dog eat dog kind of thing and people crushing other people to get to the top. It must have been difficult for them but we thank God for their perseverance otherwise we would not know their story today. Thank you Alhaji Aladokun and our dear host of Agbaletu.
Masquerade in Yoruba land is a traditional religion of some family lineages or clans. They are the Ọ̀jẹ̀ families; most of them having Ọ̀jẹ̀ as prefix to their names/surnames. Aladokun was very popular as masquerade/magician in those days 60s, 70s and thereafter.
All this pastors and Alfa's we say all that is ungodly 💪🏾💯 ishese lagba we need to go back to the tradition.

I think at this point, Agbaletu must use all means to interview KSA at all cost. We must hear from him too, so that people judgement will be fair on the matter. The story is becoming lopsided small small.
But let me say that band leaders might not have paid them enough. That doesnt mean however that they were so poorly paid that they cant afford decent lifestyle. Sarafa Bello played for KSA for just 10 yrs or so. He bought his own car, plus the one they were given, and he built an hotel in Ikorodu from it. He said that himself. Mr Rasaki also cited the boy that played with them shortly that was able to set up a studio that he fell back on after the pushed him out for the band. So its not like they werent paid decently, but their lifestyle doesnt make them save. Band members playing for KSA and his caliber of artist earn more than medical doctors from their shows. They do shows like 3 days every week.
Band leaders is an entrepreneur. He owns his business. Its not a joint venture or partnership, so you wont expect him to declared profit for band members who are employees. Band members are hired for their skills and they are paid, they didnt register the busines with band leaders who are responsible for risk of the business. If the band fails for whatever reason, they just go ahead and play for someone else, while the band leader will die in poverty.
Lastly, he left the 30 years ago (1994), he definitely cant say much of how the band is doing now and how they are paid cos obviously he doest maintain a good relationship with his former boss. Life goes on

I think you are biased on your statements. I love KSA but am highly disappointed with all of these allegations. None of the former band members says any positive things about him. Moreover, My opinion is there were elements of greed involved
As a defense you say he's an entrepreneur. Did he have a valid contract with his employees? How much was guaranteed for their Labor? It was a form of exploitation which happens in many systems as the speaker clearly explained.

This same interview was conducted with Mr Rasak on Nigbati TV , it was interesting but I have a reservation about how @Agbaletu usually titles your interview, it tends to provoke sentiment against band leaders, for example,in all that Mr Rasak said about KSA, why is it that the only aspect that your title focus on is " divide and rule" claim, to me it appears that you guys are more interested in fueling fueds between band leaders and their band members, it's not fair at all.

THe fact remains that KSA did not treat his band members well because all KSA band members that have been interviewed did not eulogise KSA. All the KSA band members complained that they were not treated fairly when they were with KSA. Go and watch other band members interview including the one conducted by Nigbati TV. Majority of obey band members spoke well of obey but it is not so with KSA band members. KSA need to make amends with them

This is an honest discussion. Rasak’s confidence in his skills is why he can be very blunt about issues. He is very driven and i am very happy he found satisfaction/fulfillment with life in America.
This thing my people call betrayal has to be redefined. He did nothing wrong, by walking away from KSA, an almost slave relationship. The man seized the opportunity to adjust his ladder of success to lean on the right wall. He took control of his destiny.
A cab driver in America is not poor, just as a plumber or electrician is not poor in America. I know attorneys and graduate degree persons that are cab drivers.

For me..The question is how come none of these guys formed their own band and implement all these things they accused ksA, of? They left b4 they realised it is not easy to be a leader...The cash cow is the KSA personal brand. That is why at close to 80yrs of age KSA is still making millions from his talents...How come none of them has ever come even close to him? HE IS THE MAN WITH THE " ANNOINTING'..That is the truth....Obey while on his Chair on account of age is still making millions based on his talents...Even in government services or private companies earning same salary does not mean all of you will be on the same level at retirement..We have cases of junior officers that retired to their own houses while his bosses retired into rented apartments.. It is how you plan your life and discipline yourself.

N4000 in 1976 when N1 was about $1.30.. If KSA had facilitated Steve Wonder contract, today Mr Rasaki would still have sounded this way. There are so many drummers of that generation that were not fortunate to have a KSA dat will facilitate a US, UK Japan & European Visa. I thank God for Mr Rasaki life that he was able to stay back in USA with KSA facilitated Visa. At least we should be grateful to KSA for that alone has he's not God.

Hmmmm! Another way to tarnish the image of KSA - "divide-and-rule"? With insider knowledge, some of these musicians are clueless with their allegations, partly due to their unrefined approach to music business and life. A band is not like a plantation field where you are forced to work as a slave. So, as grown men (not band "boys" as you all call yourselves), they have the free-will to leave. KSA still shines forth despite the palaver by the old members, who have all prospered or traveled abroad through KSA. Like Oliver Twist, never satisfied. And they continue to grant interviews to discuss same issues over and over. Anyway, the channel bearer must run his show on RUclips with whatever content to make small change. Think twice, man!

We need to understand that music is like a secular company where the owner employs workers and they are paid salaries, so for Mr Rasaki to be expecting unexpected from the CEO. That's not possible.

Lots of words of wisdom in KSA records many of which this gentleman played in adequately answered his allegations. Words, one of which destiny shines like Gold. Who can change what God has destined for a man? How many band leaders of that generation are still making waves at top level today? DESTINY. If an angel leads a band in Nigeria we will still have things to say. Unfortunately KSA is not an angel. I live in abroad now and I do not hold any grudges against my former bosses. I am only grateful to them all for the opportunity and experiences I gained . Most people those days don’t know better. And it will be unfair to judge them by western world’s standards. As for Steve Wonders issue if he’s actually NEED you, he has more than enough connections and power to get you. I hope today’s band leaders are reading, watching and learning how to and how not to be a band leader in Nigeria.

A very good interview however there are three sides to a story most times. There is Rasaki’s side which would be his own truth, then King Sunny Ade’s side which would represent his own perspective and thirdly you will have the absolute truth.
I have watched and listened carefully to most of the interviews by KSA’s former band members and generally speaking what I can deduce is that depending on when you were in the band the story slightly differs. Some had very good experiences in terms of pays and their relationship with KSA. Some it appears not so good and that’s not because KSA was or is a bad man or leader. We must understand that there was mutiny in the band at some point and as such it appears that KSA’s fall back was to be daring in his approach that is why he would have two or three back up’s for every department of the band. Don’t forget he had been bitten once. As they say once bitten twice shy! He learnt from the Abioro saga when some of his band members left just before a show. If you were him what would you do? They made him to be daring. He simply could not trust them and as far as he was concerned the show must go on. It’s his name to protect.
KSA is not perfect and so are his erstwhile band members too. We mustn’t forget that he who has made you laugh can also make you cry BUT the most important thing is to always remember the good that one has done. No matter what, KSA did good than what many people would do to Rasaki, he housed him when he came to Lagos and whether he decides to acknowledge it or not it was on the account of KSA that he first travelled out of Nigeria. The show he had in Netherlands in 1994 which he mentioned it was KSA who sanctioned that travelling then. In the case of Stevie Wonder things can be more complicated than what Rasaki has stated. Collaborations go through record companies etc. KSA may never have been involved in it. He is just assuming a lot because of his bias against KSA.
In all of this, let’s learn to be content and grateful for that which people have done for us. Also band members must learn to save don’t use all your money to buy a music set that has no value. He could have used that money to buy land at that time!
Sir, you have spoken well. Mr. Aladokun said KSA paid them handsomely when on tours; meaning if there is more to be shared KSA is faultless. His complaint can be tied to poor revenue in Nigeria, in fact, what does he expect from couple of 50kobos and one-one Nairas?
Well said. With regard to the Stevie Wonder request/invitation, KSA may have his reasons for aborting the plan. It may be Baba Rasaki was at that point a petulant staff which made KSA decide to leave him out of the furtherance of the Stevie Wonder proposal

Egbon is saying the fact abt their income with some of these juju music leaders. I worked with Femi kuti in 89 to 2002 and in btw with sunny okosun and Mike okri and Mike obi. The pay per show from other artist outskirts of juju music is incomparable to juju music income of which is nothing u can survived with when it comes to Juju music. It is something that I've witnessed with few other popular juju musician workers how they complain abt the pay and suffering.
FOR ALL THE YOUNGSTERS MR RASAKI ALADOKUN IS THE MAN CONSTANTLY SMILING ON THE JAPAN CONCERT IN 1984.

Critical appraisal of this interview, I can infer conflicting interests on the part of this man. He said band boys were not paid enough, but he mentioned a guy that was smart enough to start his own studio. He also mentioned the fact that he was able to get fund from a tour and wanted to start distributorship with Cadbury. Where did he get the money? Whilst, the band owner have their own issues, the band boys have a lot of issues ranging from waywardness, alcoholism, womanizing, voodooism etc. When you listen to some of them, they were able to have properties from being band boys, especially those that didn't stay till forever behind a band leader.
KSA depended so much on Alhaji Rasaki Aladokun and used to give him the chance to display his talent. Like "Rasaki mi o ijo tiya, ti o lo ko ti o lo" and so on. i use to enjoy it o. So, KSA is entitled to be angry with him for any misdemeanors

He didn’t condemn sunny. He is just saying his own truth.
The moral issue which most of the commenters fail to understand (whether due to impatience, ignorance or willful disregard) is that the music of KSA (at least in the era of most of the former band members) was a co-created product. However, KSA despite knowing this behaved as if the co-created products belonged exclusively to him!
A very minuscule percentage of Nigerian musicians have the creative genius to create and compose all the instrumental and lyrical parts of their music. For musicians who have not exclusively created their song-products to continue to act as if they alone own such products is highly IMMORAL.
To solve this problem, however, requires cooperation among band members and relevant legislation.

The interviewer ought to put an interviewee into a position of the leader of the band. What would the interviewee do if the band didn't make enough money after deductions of expenses? The easiest thing to do in life is to criticise either the band leaders, the government, etc.

I wonder how some of listen to discussion. I dont see any where this man spoke ill of KSA rather he gave his experience during is journey with the band which i dont think he meant to disparage anyone. Moreover many band boys have always have same complain hence this should tell us something is not right how they manage their band.
For me Alhaji Rasak Aladokun spoke well and Dele is also a good interviwer he shows he had done hos research well before asking his questions.

It's quite true. Some times it's due to the fact that you are good at what you do. They don't like losing their best hands especially if they have spotted or noticed you have potentials and especially if they also fear that you can even excel than them. Only very few of them don't have this mindset

Kudos to Alhaji Aladokun that's just the fact about all those band leaders. They always band members and dump them, the earlier those band leaders realise the better.
The more I watch this interview the more I got really upset. Someone with their rightful senses will know that all the band leaders are cheats in Nigeria. This man is very pleasant and really respective. The slave trade in Africa currently is bigger and real. we must all fight against it. No wonder most of these band leaders go broke.
What Alhaji Aladokun is explaining is called Transparency. Bands should be managed like companies with band members being share holders on an agreed fair sharing formula. Mr Dele Adeyanju will no doubt agree with me.
