Just breaks my heart over and over. I am recovering from PTSD and what Courtney, what you experienced Courtney, is typical of PTSD - the brain just glitches out and you'd SWEAR it was Monday, and you can even check the calendar and your mind will see it incorrectly, your brain will not register what is right in front of your eyes because the amygdala and limbic system is hyperactive and making it very difficult to stay in the prefrontal cortex, which is the area of the brain that can access logic, reasoning and rational thinking. Not your fault, honey, not your fault at all. It takes time to recover but you WILL recover. Don't give up. It does get better, I promise you. So much love to you and the other gals there. And you don't have to prove anything, you were instantly forgiven, you just need to forgive yourself my friend. Jesus came for those of us who were the most forgotten, the most hurt, the ones who had lost hope. You are LOVED! Never, ever forget that!

I wanted to reach through my tablet and give Shelly and Courtney a big hug and offer words of support. Both ladies wished to move forward to accomplish their dreams but situations and personalities got in their way no matter how well intended some were. At times their own fears held them back too.
Shelly, so sweet and childlike in her demeanor, even when describing her work, leads me to wonder if a child sexually assaulted at a young age causes her maturity to not develop past that age in some aspects? One only need look at Shelly and Courtney and see their pain. Courtney required more support and treatment although that was not specified. She could have benefited by daily professional support.
For those of us that have been fortunate enough to have never been exposed to the "mean streets," it was a big wow eye opening view of that section of society. Thank you to Shelly, Courtney and the people in their lives for their openness and sharing.
Finally I commend the RCMP Task Force for Project Care. Their kindness and commitment was apparent. Thank you for being those women and girls champion on the streets of Edmonton. I was truly horrified for those women and they live that life, day in, day out. God Bless them and keep them safe.

It is actually a well documented phenomenon in human psychology that children who experience abuse, trauma, addiction, or even things as benign as the death of a loved one, an extended illness, or a natural disaster of can experience arrested emotional development. They are anchored to that time in their life and much of their development from that point on is informed by said trauma. It conditions and informs every part of their decision-making going forward.
This is why adequate access to consistent and appropriate therapies and social programs for children & adult survivors of childhood trauma is of dire importance.

She never was able to adapt to normal living, even after many attempts. She is 42 and just went from jail to rehab and we always hope. My biggest fear is always that she will die and be found unidentified because who would think she has a large family tha5. While we had to move on and accept her life, we do love her.
