My reason i decided on a low profile pop up truck camper.. 1000 pounds lighter than closest fixed style . Better Agility & fuel economy can handle those Strong crosswinds when driving really well.. Lower to access roof . Not only do the hard set inwindows open mid level but with the pop-up i got unobstructed view on all sides with the zippered windows and tbe airflow is unmatched and 2 fantastic fans help if needed . I Have Factory A.C. but prefer to stay out of RV parks . if it gets
Too hot i can run air by using very quiet honda generator complete with sound deadening box to bring decible level so low closet fellow camper dont hear. Best Choice for me. I wanted lightweight low profile.

a cool thing about this whole realm, the newer the truck, the lighter the older campers are in relation to todays work ability. You can get the bigger camper as an older version etc.. lots of things you can do, and the truck will stay good. These used to break frames even after the factory rated them to be able. the newer trucks fix all that. the expensive old camper suddenly has a new life cheaply.

I've owned them all--Airstream trailer--fifth wheel--motor home--tent--and at the end of the day for me the truck camper is the best for so many reasons.Travelled across Canada and all the way down to Mexico --two of us with two dogs--worked well.
Staying with the truck camper now.

Why? Why did the truck camper end up being the best? Trying to decide between an Airstream and truck camper.. Main thing is I know towing can be challenging on where you can go and park... And I want to get to places to camp that most in a tt can't get to.

Hello. Long time a truck camper guy here. A suggestion for a future Rv camper tip is to rate the potential for rot . Uphere in the PNW this is what kills RVs. Which one is best & why. Slide or no slide. Solid FG sides or the tin type.

One of my favorite things about truck campers, especially the ones with the large front overhang, is you get a HUGE bed, that's always a bed and doesn't have to be folded out of the couch or dinette and it doesn't jam up the whole interior at night when in use.

If you're looking to do more serious off-roading with a truck camper, or even if you just want to use your half-ton or 3/4-ton pickup for it, look into a pop-up camper. They're also good for keeping the profile low to avoid finding alternate routes due to clearance restrictions. But if you want four-seasons camping, unless you can get to a dealer that sells Alaskans, a hardwall is your best bet.

I believe I have the same camper as you; Arctic Fox 990. It is my third camper in over 50 years of RVing. All the Pros and Cons are right on. I've owned a camper with no bathroom or A/C, one with bathroom and A/C, but no slide out, and now a camper with bathroom, A/C, and slide out. I've also owned a Class A motorhome, and currently own along with my Arctic Fox a 33' Desert Fox Toy Hauler. Sometimes I pull a trailer full of toys behind the camper for short trips. On longer trips I use the Toy Hauler. I bought the Desert Fox (made by the same company as the Arctic Fox) because the quality of the Arctic Fox was so good and both had dump valves in the heated area. After all, who wants their dump valves to freeze and break leaving a black water streak down the highway or in your campsite. Unfortunately the quality of the Desert Fox is not up to par with the Arctic Fox. What it really boils down to is what are you going to do on your "camping trips"? Go anywhere (almost) get a truck camper. Stay on highways and have long stays in one place get a Class A motorhome and tow a car or get a 5th wheel. Different strokes for different folks and different lifestyles. Back to the camper. As long as you know what the cons are, you can be careful and avoid all problems. Keep up the good work. Great video.

Thank you, I’m seriously considering the truck camper and I appreciate you sharing the cons. I need something smaller because I don’t think that I could drive a huge class C or big rig down the road. And, I don’t wanna have to set up every single time I want to stop. Thank you, again

Thanks for posting this video. I haven't owned a truck camper for many years, but thinking I might again. It was interesting for me to see that portion of the video where your truck was rocking a bit. I thought with dually's that wouldn't be the case, especially on a 1-ton. Good info...thanks

I have a truck and camper, mine however are in the 1977 range, and for me when your at a site your at the site, my camper was 11 1/2 feet and on and off was a night mare, hydraulic jacks you had to pump 5-10 times per corner, just to get it off, now electric lift and level is probably faster than unhooking a trailer, loved my unit, now a days it a little unpracticle your truck and camper unit is awesome i would love something like that, awesome vid

No trailer tags, no axle or wheel bearings or tires. I have the same Arctic fox camper.
We ❤️It As for listing from side to side in high wind . I had my over load Leaf springs re-arched and added a leaf.
My truck is 1 ton suspension however I added two 5000 pound airbags. Problem resolved!!
The slide in works for my wife and I with a toy schnauzer very well. Happy Camper ❗️

Some mods to make it more comfortable that we've learned over the years are: Air bags, 6" memory foam mattress, auxiliary catalytic heater (conserves battery), battery isolater (to prevent draining truck battery), LED lighting (to conserve battery), ROKU/cell phone/hot spot app/unlimited data plan (to stream Internet TV almost anywhere at night), and satellite radio subscription and quality head phones for personalized listening.

We bought a new 32' Class-C RV and traveled several times but always felt like we were never really welcome any place we stopped. It was way to big to park just anyplace unless you were out in the western states or way outside of a town or city. Now were thinking about a Dodge one ton, 4X4, diesel, crew cab, with an 8' bed and a large fiberglass slide-in camper. We did some stealth camping and thought it was a bunch of fun. We always stopped after dark and were gone before sunup. We would stop and eat at a restaurant then drive for awhile hunting for a place to hide our big ass rig. We used anyplace we could find that was hidden and out of sight from any roads and not near a city or town. Out west we had some nights that not one car drove past all night it was that remote.

One feature my wife enjoys is using the bathroom while we are driving and being inside our coach at all times especially during bad weather.

Taylor, Try a Ram 4500 or 5500 with aluminum flatbed and Kelderman and you can go wherever you like and the wind wont bother you anymore. You wont rock and roll. Brakes are huge and also Cummins baby. Also you wont need to use your jacks as much. The truck will squat and just drive out from under the rig. I built a 2017 5500 specifically for a TC with a Norstar bed and 4 corner Kelderman. Handled so well I became a dealer for Kelderman.

Some campsites are so small that you have to level the camper right on the truck. If you wanted to go into town for something you have to break camp, tie it back to your truck and reset camp when you get back. That's why I got rid of my truck camper. I bought a trailer that I can just leave in camp although mine is just 21 feet. My truck camper was comfortable until I brought my wife. Then we were bumping butts every time we were working inside together. You seem to LOVE it so enjoy!

Hi Taylor! I've been dancing around the idea of buying a truck camper myself rather than continue with the overlander roof top tent idea. I've been watching Catherine Gregory's channel and her Lancer camper adventures. The idea of driving to your specific campsite, park and you're pretty much done. Just need to set up your outdoor space with a chair and a camp fire and the adventure begins. I love to fish and my bucket list includes a Bass Tracker boat. Even with a camper a good pick up can haul a boat. As a former Class A driver myself I'm glad you mentioned that point regarding vehicle height so I'll be cognizant of that as I shop for my rig.

Nice general comments about a large heavy TC base on your rig. Having been doing more serious off roading with a hardside pick a smaller unit and have a truck that is SRW 4x4. DWR's have a problem of being too wide for a lot of trails and getting rocks jammed between the tires.

The longer the wheel base the better it will handle. Something to consider with a tall heavy truck. Once you get a 3/4 ton you can do it and still keep a 8 foot bed

I feel you. We had a 35ft 5th wheel as RV newbies and we lived in it fulltime for 2 1/2 years and then decided a truck camper is where we wanted to be. So we did that and got the Arctic Fox 1150 and LOVE it. The biggest pro for me is that the ONLY tires I need to worry about are the ones under the truck. We found ourselves traveling more than we did with the trailer. And yes, it sits on a 3500 RAM dually with airbags and I just cannot be happier with it.

Good for you guys!! I been back and forth on a TT or a TC. Ill be solo for the first 6 months or so. So a TC all the way you think huh?

    • @HailRider
      @HailRider 6 лет назад +3

IF you have a dually and solo then yes, a TC is fine, good and easy. I don't think we would live full time in a TC though..especially with our big dog. And just a few weeks ago we did what I thought we never would...got rid of my truck and camper and got a class C..so technically I still have a dually..but we decided on that so we could have a lot more room, still only need to worry about the wheels that are under the vehicle and if we choose we can pull our smaller car along with us to jaunt around with. I might have gone with an Eagle cap that has the side entry TC...if there was a dealer around...I loved my Ram 3500 and I do miss it. But, in the long run I think we will be happier with the class C. The payment on the truck and camper was over 500 dollars more than my payments on the class c so that is nice.

Was your Dually a Diesel? Some people say a Gas Dually is enuf for a TC. Im torn on the TC or the Lance 2155 and a Sierra 2500. tough choice!! Thank you again!

    • @HailRider
      @HailRider 6 лет назад +3

Here's the deal. If you are going to get a Lance or Arctic Fox or comparable, they are heavy and need a truck that can deal with it. Mine was a 3500 Diesel dually and even then I had to put airlift 7500 bags on it to properly support the camper. A 2500 I wouldn't go with. A diesel gives you that super power to really get that thing around with no hassles and I also think a 4x4 is better. There are advantages to 2x4 but a 4x4 will get you anywhere in all seasons. I did drive my camper home without airbags and the RAM 3500 dually can handle it...but for safety and ride comfort putting 7500lb airbags on will really make the truck stable because with a camper on the center of gravity is high and we don't want that. The initial investment for a truck camper is a tidy sum, say 1400 for bags and install, another 600 for FastGuns to secure the camper to the truck. I also recommend an 8ft box truck. The cab style is your choice but I preferred the crew cab. Truck camper magazine is a great source of info and its online. truckcampermagazine.com.
A gas engine is okay, I just prefer the stoutness and reliability of a Cummins straight 6. My RAM 3500 never let me down and once I had the truck set up with camper I never really noticed it was on there the engine is so powerful and the gearing so perfect gas mileage was barely affected.
I am partial.. I love the RAM 3500 dually..but you get what is right for you. Ask the dealer you are looking at campers about truck recommendation.
I would like to know what you get and camper choice.

That was a great video and the fact that I hit the like is a huge compliment because I never do that because I get tired of being guilted into or consistently reminded to like and subscribe I am sure that everyone knows to like and subscribe if they enjoy a video. But anyway when I was 17 I bought my first pickup and camper combo and I lived in it into my 20’s I loved the fact that I had my own portable place to be wherever I was and I was able to work in California and earn great money and not spend it on the high price of rent and I would park in my parents backyard when I was not using it. But because I thought that i needed more space i bought and converted a school bus into a camper and figured out that it was not as easy to move around now into my 50’s i have lived in some kind of mobile home and have only lived in a real home for a long miserable year but as i am older and have accumulated more things i found that a small trailer with Slideouts are the best for me as i have the mobility and still have my pickup truck to drive when I’m going to be in one place for an extended period. My next step is going to be a toy hauler so I can have a garage and storage space for a washer and dryer

Thanks for your video. I am currently saving and deciding myself. One idea is of course a truck camper. Another is a small retro style camper. I can leave it at the campground while I go do whatever. My 3rd idea is a cargo van and outfitting the inside with the basics, bathroom, bed, kitchen, etc. I am on the fence with all 3. Hopefully I make up my mind soon. It's about to be spring and I'm itching to get the heck out there. Best of luck to you on your journeys.

my husband really wanted a truck camper but I couldn't imagine being cramped up in such a small space, incase while traveling, one of us ended up getting sick. I get migraines every now & then. the small space thing for me was not appealing. (the bathroom/shower) I'm sure the convenience is perfect for one person & I can see how it would be cozy. Taylor yours looks bigger than what we were looking at. So, our travel trailer is only 18 ft inside 21.5ft outside end to end... not bad to tow. Even I could tow it if needed.

Since 2000 I have had 8 different truck campers. Pop-ups and full time up models. Both had their good points and bad points. I finally purchased an Enterprise cube van and did a full conversion. I bought it last year and worked on and off for 7 months. It is a 2014 Chevy Express 3500 single rear wheel. The number one pro is divided between the ease of parking (stealth) and the fact that my wife can stand up, turn around , walk to the bathroom and I dont have to stop anywhere. We all know about the dreaded "I gotta pee".

Nicely-produced video. I have two comments:
    1. Many campgrounds ban taking the truck camper off your truck. The reason is they would have no way to remove it if you abandoned it,
Many of them also ban truck campers that are not fully contained.
    2. I am surprised you are not getting flack for illegally boondocking at hotels (private property). Occasionally I got a knock at 2 AM or 5 AM or 7 AM and employees kicked me out.

Nice job on this video. i also like the practical angle of being able to remove the camper section and using a truck just as an everyday vehicle. I don't have either right now, but if I got a camper I would look for something smaller and lighter. Gasoline ain't free! Will check out your other camper videos, thanks.

Personally I would have stuck with the Trailer. You can park it, leave it at your camp and go exploring. I've camped for years. For me there are more cons than pro's. That's a nice looking Rig and Camper you got. Cheers ! Live the life you were meant to have!

Thank You Taylor! I'm thinking this would be a good set up for me. As a single woman who will be traveling on my own, I will want a pass through boot to get into my truck if need be to drive away quickly.

I love the design of the Arctic Truck Campers but the only SUPER CONS is the extremely noisy onan generator. I don't know in Canada but here in USA there is a lot of regulations about the noise & fumes from generators in RV campgrounds & National Parks.

I have been trying to figure out why truck campers exist for a little while because they don't seem to be less expensive to purchase. Usually need a 1ton truck to handle the payload capacity so why not use a smaller bumper pull camper that would give you bigger tanks and more space? Maybe I am misinformed about tank sizes for these truck campers but I assume they are smaller. The park anywhere thing is a legit pro for some as well as maneuverability. I see in the comments people saying you can pull a boat or some other trailer and that is true but only if you have the extra payload capacity to not overload your truck's suspension. I try to keep my payload numbers near my truck's ratings for safety, ride comfort, and reliability.

Thanks for the insight. I've had motorhomes and 5th wheels. I've been on the fence about a truck camper vs trailer this go around and you've made some very good points. Cheers from Colorado.

Other advantages include, 1) since it is not a trailer, it doesn't require registration or state inspection, saving Manley and an extra task. 2) it is probably covered by car insurance when on the truck and by homeowners insurance when in your driveway. You might obtain rv insurance anyway as it probably will not be covered if it is elsewhere and off the truck. 3) since there are no additional axles on the ground, you may not have to pay additional toll costs in some cases. 4) if vehicle needs work, the whole rv doesn't have to be laid up too. 5) most rv's are not 4wd so access to questionable locations are a comfort. 6) When visiting friends or family, you are more welcome in a small truck camper because it takes up no more room than your vehicle, and the hosts don't have to prepare sleeping quarters for their visitors! Happy Truck camping!

So here I am, watching through all your videos for the THIRD time...lol. I wish there were more "truck camper life" RUclipsrs to binge-watch until I get started on my own channel! You and Phil on Down2mob are the only two worth watching in my opinion.
I've been researching and saving for my rig for over a year now and I'm still, unfortunately, several months away from being able to go truck/camper shopping. I'm going to have to continue living vicariously through you and your videos until then.
I hope you are doing well, and I would love to hear how the camper and truck are holding up after 2 years!
I look forward to seeing some fresh content from you!

I have used an Arctic Fox 980 truck camper for 14 years and it has held up very well. The height problem is a real issue in Mexico. There appear to be no standards for electrical line clearance heights in Mexico. Thoroughfares are generally safe but driving into downtown areas or into neighborhoods can be like driving into a spider web of electrical lines. Beware the border crossing at Naca Mexico into Arizona. I veru slowly passed under an overhead bar I did not see at night on the Mexico side, became stuck under it and, before I realized what was happening, I pulled the support stanchions out of their (cemented) bases and had to pay a fine of $400 USD to get my truck back from the Federales, plus pay $200 to repair the damage to the structure (in the US would have been 10 X that) so it would be all set to trap the next high clearance victim. NOTE: this incident damaged the A/C but did ZERO damage to the camper's aluminum super-structure! I straightened out the A/C and it still works fine.
I am a fan of truck campers for all the reasons you have stated in this video. However, regarding the "cons" of truck campers I would add that replacing my truck camper back onto my dually Ford F-350 is a bit tricky and requires some patience to do it without damaging either the truck or the camper. For that reason I do not remove my truck camper often and only for really compelling reasons. So the truck is pretty much dedicated to hauling the camper. That's the disadvantage of having a dually to haul the truck camper.
The dually is much better for stability while driving in high winds because, as you mentioned, high winds are encountered frequently and can be challenging and even dangerous when hauling a truck camper. I will often slow down to 40 - 50 MPH in high winds and on rare occasions have even pulled over to wait out the wind. All things considered, if you need the truck for work and will be removing the camper often, don't get a dually. If you don't need the truck for other purposes and can leave the camper in place most of the time, a dually is the way to go.
    Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for the pros and cons. I would someday get one but right now I don't have the space for it when I don't want it on the truck. Another pro is you can park it free overnight in a mall parking lot and sleep instead of at a park where you have to pay up.

Vehicle registration and insurance is multiplied with trailers vs truck camper. Also, easier to replace truck if catastrophic damage or end of service life; lift off camper & trade vehicle!

Hey there. Just a couple items. The hair is very distracting. Or maybe I'm just envious since mine has mostly abandoned ship. Lol. All kidding aside nice video well edited and to the point. That is a high luxury camper you have there. Beats the old Alaskan camper I had on luxury but it was a shelter and because it would drop the top lowered the center of gravity and less air resistance. Got into some very beautiful spots with it. Keep having fun Sir.

  • @IowaKim

Some pros that swayed me. 1 no registration needed each year, at least in my state. 2 when riding a ferry you pay is as though you were a pickup truck. 3 when on tollways you're a two-axle vehicle. 4 when buying from a private sale no sales tax is needed at least in the United States.

You neglected to mention that the hitch is still there and usable with a camper! Your payload is significantly less with the mass of the camper, so watch GCVWR and total payload+tongue mass, but you could pull a small boat or ATV trailer with ease.

25 years with our 9' truck camper has also taught us it's disadvantages: Small space and little storage (won't work with a claustrophobic wife), not fun camping in cold wet weather, and small water storage (ours is 30 gal.). But, as I often lament, every RV has it's advantages and disadvantages. Form follows function, so study your intended uses before buying an RV.
