As a dutchman I can confirm this is still going, just bought my first tulip for €10.000
She's a beauty
Dan heb je je geld verspild
floris oosters why are you wasting hard earned income on perishable plant sex organs?
Can't you buy one from e-bay though
10000 maar die van mij was 30000
Uh... That's a poppy. You bought a poppy for 10k... I'm pretty sure you got scammed.
this makes so much more sense now. it wasn't the tulips themselves, but the profit that could be made speculating that drove up the price.
Well tulips themselves were a big part due to various religious reasons- ie as a product of nature it didn't conflict with calvinist precepts like other luxury items might have- Check out Extra History's tulipmania series, they go into a lot more detail, and dispell some misconceptions Adam doesnt go into here- for example the actual financial fallout was exagerated.
Yea like housing or stocks or crypto or NFTs or cars. All the things that have created our current bubble rn

Adam: This is a Futures Contract.
Gamers: Don't you mean a Pre-Order?
But can u sell the pre-order to somebody else ?
Ramu on eBay
If you guys hear "Futures Contract", that's Wall Street lingo for "price betting on the item (i.e. coffee, crude oil & natural gas)"

All this madness for something you can mistake for an onion
and a famous dutch captain did mistake for onion and ate it.
People in the future might make the same comment to us regarding bitcoin
Who would mistake it for an union?!
Michael Panggabean exactly. Something only worth that much because we make it worth that much.
In general, is just like stocks.
mestre12 well, no. When you buy stocks, you buy a fraction of the company. Any profit made by the company will be shared to the stockholders as dividends.
For bitcoins, you don't get any sort of dividend. You only get something that you believe to have some worth. That's the only value of bitcoins, or any other crypto.
It's hard to believe a common flower that I bought at Home Depot and grow in my own garden every year used to be such a crazy status symbol and caused an economic bubble.
lot of things were status symbol at some point.
clean salt, white sugar, anything sweet, food from the other side of the world... most of the things you can see in your house
and actually there's one thing Adam left out about the lifecycle of tulips, that the bulbs divide over the course of the year to make babies. tulips are very slow growing however, compared to daffodils or hyacinths for example.
Tulips wear the old Bitcoin, edit: thanks for all the likes, fixed spelling.
Smog check the posted speed up
I was literally about to type that, glad i'm not the only one to notice that.
Well...you can eat tulips in a pinch.
sept you got a flower at the end
Yes and it’s were not where
Fun fact: this tulip mania also became the first financial drop ever, going from being worth as much as buildings to being worth nothing. Some rich people who had invested in tulips became instanly poor.
Thank you for explaining the "futures" concept. I never knew what they were talking about on the financial news. I'll assume this is true and not an "Adam" joke.
2:06 did the guy in the green’s money just turn into a contract
Yes he bought his bag of money with his own money
I am glad i wasn’t the only one to see that
Yes
*WITCHCRAFT!*
The episode ignores a very important aspect of the tulip craze. The rarest and most desired tulips were formed due to a viral infection. which not only made them unpredictable but short lived. One feature of such economic bubbles is that buyers don't really understand what they are buying.

tulip mania? sounds like what's happening with bitcoin  oh, no way, bitcoin is a bubble?
ktktktktktktkt im dutch and yeah i know this part of history (its a story in the family) and the reason my dad is heavily against bitcoin for this reason. A couple months to a year after this the netherlands massively bought tulips from turkey and other countrys it naturally grows. And started planting them here. In the netherlands. This dropped the prices of tulips from being able to buy a house from a tulipknot to 10 cents. Bringing multiple people in jepoardy. this will happen to bitcoin aswell (i give it about 2 or 3 years) tulips are still nice.
Maybe, I asked my dad what he thnks about it. He says while the encryption access is a cool idea unless a government( namely our American government) puts Gold behind it, hes not gonna invest.
ktktktktktktkt tulip mania was the First financial bubble ever
Easy way to tell if something is a bubble. Do you hear people saying that there is no way you can lose money investing in (insert investment here)? If you do then it is a rapidly expanding bubble and will likely burst soon.
Emilio Reyes US gold hasn't been backing our currency for almost 40 years.

this isn't a realistic dutch accent though...
Joep Keulemans inderdaad
Yep
It's a lot better than the usual german accent they give to dutch people.
But seriously, we have one of the funniest accents in europe! Why wouldn't they include that?
I thought it was one of the more believable Dutch accents by non-Dutch people I've heard on TV.
It's more like a Russian accent....

Oh yeah... have a "like".
Well, they are not making videos. The are creating full episodes. As for making an entire episode of the show, while I do not have the actual numbers, I can make a guess. Considering that the animation uses either flash or toonboom, I am going to say that it takes about a month to animate a full 22 minute episode at minimum. As for the research, I suspect a couple day to weeks depending on the subject and how soon they can get an expert's clarification on it.
He Review Me I think Amateur Gamer's doing a pretty good Sean Connery impression...

BEST video so far! finally, Wallstreet 2 explained! and every bubble crisis!
I LOVED THIS VIDEO, though you guys were far off with the Dutch accent
the tube I'm just happy they didn't speak German. Or that thing in Designated Survivor... I still don't know what that was supposed to be.
At 2:06 when the two new guys show up the new guy on the left just takes that guys money and gives it right back to him lol.
i didn't know that Dutch guilders was marked as $
they're not, they just did that as a common representation of money to American's
It was marked as ƒ or fl, which stood for florin since the original name of the valuta was gulden florijn (guilder florin) or (golden florin).
It isn't guilders but gulden
@@glenn.bergsma1801 There are many different names for it. Guilder is the English word for gulden. Also the polish zloty means roughly the same as gulden, but in another language. Our currency was far from unique.
I came here from Extra History's series on Tulipmania, and Highly recommend it for anyone wanting to hear about it in more detail.
I like the vids but I cant unsee now that at 2:05 some of them are just taking money and giving it back to the same person
*INCEPTION.*
I was searching for a comment that said that
Very profitable for people as long as your not the last group to buy. Trouble is nobody knows when something will happen to cause a re-think of the market and everyone stops buying.
When a guy rips a money bag out of your hand, turns it into a contract and gives you a diffrent bag of money
To to mention that this practice of future markets is the same way commodity goods are sold to this day.
Commodities futures are heavily regulated by their respective markets, with checks and balances that prevent the sort of self-perpetuating cycles that caused the Tulip Bubble. The closest modern equivalent (other than Crypto-currency) is the securities market. Once unregulated, securities exchanges went nuts and pretty much caused the 2008 International Recession.
Right. I meant to say that the BASIS on which we trade commodities came from this event.
First I heard of this Tulipmania.
ziljin As a Dutchman, it's 100% real and we still like tulips to this day

Heh... I'm 29, and I now finally understand what 'futures' are--I love this show.
Wait, so I didn’t see the full episode. This was a great historical informational video, but what misconception was Adam attacking? Tulip mania seems like a pretty obscure topic
The topic is about the Dutch having created the world’s first recorded economic bubble
I know this is an old comment, and it's been a WHILE since I saw the full episode, but IIRC, the misconception Adam was attacking was the idea that some people have, that the Tulip Bubble crash was because people just REALLY into the Tulips, when in reality, people didn't care so much about the flowers, and more the profit they could make off of them
@@nunyabizness9548 but back then the dutch people really did want those flowers, its less like the stock market, and more like cars or houses, buying a nice car or house isnt really more practical than a cheaper one but its the value people saw in it, people wanted tulips sometimes more than gold. so while yes like most thing profit was a concern, it wasnt as simple as people only saw them as assets.
@@nunyabizness9548That's not true though. This idea that it was an asset nobody wanted comes from revisionist pop-history (much like Adam's little show) It shows Americans fundamentally don't understand Dutch culture, especially not Dutch culture of the 1600s.
2:06 the money magically turned into a contract huh
Cool to learn that we sounded like russians in the past. Thanks for this history lesson!
2:06 on the left side the bad turned into a scroll MAGIC!

Who didn’t know what tulip mania was before this video
That is great!
This sounds like an older version of pre-ordering.
Yep, they literally pre-ordered tulips.
The best part is when the contract owner comes to collect his tulip, you can just fart in his face
XDD WHY DO THEY HAVE A SWEDISH ACCENT No one know how our language sounds it’s so sad 😂
The contract is like pre ordering
This is no different from the housing market
The history repeats.
Or bitcoins if you think about it.
More like bitcoins really. Housing is a necessity. The extent may vary, but everyone needs a home to call their own. Tulips and bitcoin... not so much!
Its stock marketing in general.
bubble markets in general. If 'experts' are calling something a surefire can't lose investment the price will skyrocket, due to speculators buying in hopes of a huge return, until people who need/want that thing are priced out of the market. Then as the speculators realize that people are not buying that thing they will sell their investments to other speculators to salvage any money they can before/triggering a market crash.
00:30 that made me cry...
I really like this show, but I need to know what is being ruined. Although an interesting story, the point of the show is to debunk common misconceptions. Tell me what those are.
In the more recent shows at least, they spend time debunking some popular misconception, and then spend some time teaching about something related but not correcting a misconception. Just teaching about something a lot of people don't know anything about. I haven't seen the episode this clip comes from, so it might not be "ruining" anything - just a little history lesson.
Yes.
They ran out of ideas ages ago... the show could be just as easily called "out of shape white guy complains"... Sure the title isn't as catchy but its a lot more accurate
This video actually debunkes nothing and actually spreads the misconceptions about Tulipmania.
The quality of these videos has really declined.
The misconception that such bubbles are good investments?
2:05 The Money Transformed to a contract
Crash Course Economics anyone?
except John Green would do a WAY better job

Not many, which is why no one cares.
Martijn Mulder yh sounds more like a Russian accent
yea i am there right now i am dutch

I’m just guessing they didn’t even bother researching the accent and so they went with a Weird made up accent. Should have just stuck to not doing an accent at all.
Hello I'm leonardo from Argentina, I like this video, do you have a full video about the Tulipmania?. Thanks great video !!
Hey Adam, slight correction... that contract would be called a forward contract not a futures contract. A futures contract is something traded on an exchange platform through brokers and is highly regulated while a forward contract is an agreement between two parties. The contract can be traded still, but it is a lot less formal
Thanks!

NFTs
2:06 The guy money turned into a contract
Who tf ever heard of this
I hope the rest of the segment has the other part of story about bubbles. A fad is relatively easy. What makes it into a bubble is the perceived wealth that overrides common sense and the idea that you can make it to the exit before the whole thing sinks. It's that last part that's key to a bubble's collapse.
Crypto currencies?
2:06 HEY. I SEE YOU CHANGING THAT MONEY BAG INTO PARCHMENT.
*sneaky bastards changing the props*
Dont know why this story was relevant, i've never heard of it. Just the explanation of a random term i didn't know existed. Good video though
The term tulipmania became famous again because of what's happening to bitcoin.
Diego García Barradas this story is relevant because tulip mania was the same as the bitcoin bubble we now have
Oh, thank you both, i'm not following anything about cryptocurrencies, so i didn't hear the term. Now i know, although i still don't understand what adam ruined here, bitcoin? haha, i suppose the answer is in the full episode
Diego García Barradas yeah, probably now they put shorter clips and without full context to make us curious enough to watch the full video legally.
It was the worlds first Economic Bubble
Never heard of tulipmania. Interesting time in history.
This was a thing?
yes, it was and after a few years the prices crashed and people who invested everything in tulips whare dirt poor
Guess so.
Handington
It still is.
Just with other things like Beanie Babies and Bitcoin.
Yeah, it was.... humans are weird.
It was the most amusing recession ever.
This video ignores the cause of the crash entirely. The high tulip prices wouldn't necessarily have counted as a bubble unless the tulips themselves weren't valued enough to justify it.
In 1637 the Dutch parliament passed a law declaring that all the tulip futures contracts would become options contracts. That means that someone who signed a tulip futures contract could decide at any time they didn't want the tulip after all could get out of the contract and keep their money minus a small fee. Obviously an option contract is worth less than a contract where both parties are required to uphold their end of the bargain, so the tulip market collapsed.
I don't know why Adam omits this. Is he afraid of making the 1600's Dutch government look bad? Why does he care?
Just stop, dutch people speaking English is better than most native English speakers and we dont sound like german or russian
Matthijs Bouma *are *don't
Sameer Thomas speaking not writing xD
yeah, no. I've heard many dutch people speaking english. Unless they spent most of their life in english speaking countries, they still have that noticeable thick accent.
Michael Panggabean statically it's true
Matthijs Bouma see, now you bring up statistics, which means you're arguing for quantity. Yet your original comment mentioned about being "better", i.e. based on quality. Statistics don't show how good of a speaker you are , only how many people who are able to get a good enough score on a standardized language test. Accent, diction, intonation, are qualitative factors when you want to judge how good a foreigner speaks a language compared to native speakers, and that can't be seen through statistics.
2:06 The dude on the left gets a non-existent Contract taken from his hands for money
This video would be nice if the show wasn't about ruinning or the video was ruinning something...
What?
He Review Me the show is called Reanimated History so something must be ruined or just change the show to Adam talks about overpriced flowers ( I like the video by the way)
This isn't the full episode.
It's a whole series in which Adam debunks socially accepted norms of history. Basically saying, ruining people's perception of history. In this case, I don't think he "ruined" anything, but it did explain how Tulips went crazy in the Netherlands.
Humans speculation on objects has created some pretty bad rush's on capital. It's the worst form of capitalism.
