    Thank you for this very helpful video. I had no idea what ODM and OEM are, let alone the differences between the two. Now I clearly understand the concept.

    Thank you so much, this is very helpful.
    I want to make a soft toy, and I'll provide the supplier my own design in CAD and all the required specs such as dimensions and material. In this case, should I consider my product an OEM or ODM?

    • @3G4G5G
      @3G4G5G  4 года назад +1

      "should I consider my product an OEM or ODM?" - Your product will remain a product but as you have done all the R&D yourself, your supplier will be OEM that will manufacture it to your specifications. We should have mentioned that some ODM's will do OEM job too as that keeps them busy. Hope this clarifies your doubt.

      @@3G4G5G Thank you, it's clear

    Anyway for a content based question... are the OEM's and ODM's contractually locked to their clients? let's say Nokia contracts Intel for a processor on their new phone. Can Intel still be the OEM for let's say Erickson for one of their new phones as well?

    • @3G4G5G
      @3G4G5G  5 лет назад

      As a rule of thumb the R&D owner retains the IPR. OEM will make products for anyone based on their design. ODM will make products for anyone based on their design. Most companies will ask for very slight modifications but modifications cost money so they are cautious.

  • @PALTUBABY

    My doubt is: When it comes to certifications, for eg: CE or FCC, who is responsible to carry out the certifications. Will it be the OEM or ODM or the client product company? And when the client product company sells the product to the end customer/user and the end customer/user asks for certification then in whose name will the certifications be there which will be seen by end user/customer. Will it be there in the name of OEM or ODM or client product company?

    • @3G4G5G
      @3G4G5G  4 года назад +2

      We think you have sort of answered your own question. In case of OEM, the client product company would be responsible as the OEM is making the product as per the specifications provided.
      In case of ODM, it can be a bit tricky. If the Client product company, who are actually product owners, don't want to tell the world about who made it, they will do all the certifications, etc. On the other hand, ODM may have already done certifications on some parts or may just be re-branding something they already sold to multiple people. In that case ODM will do the certifications.
      It's not necessarily clear cut, this has to be agreed during contract phase. A client product company may not have the know-how or enough people to spend time and money doing certifications. They will certainly seek someones help. It could be the ODM/OEM. The company name will depend on who files for it.

    what is R&D at the begining of the video?

    • @3G4G5G
      @3G4G5G  3 года назад

      The R&D is the research and development which is to decide what features can the product have and how much extra will it cost. A simple example is that last year (2020), Apple launched iPhone with 5G and Google launched Pixel with 5G. Apple decided to have Wi-Fi 6 as that is much better than Wi-Fi 5 but Google decided to go with Wi-Fi 5. Some people decided not to buy Google Pixel due to this limitation.

    At 2:20 Wouldn't AMD be an ODM because you are not giving then a processor design ... You are adjusting your product to their products (AMD,Intel, Samsung) at the end of the day they wouldn't be nither of both.
    Or they might be an ODM...

    • @3G4G5G
      @3G4G5G  3 года назад +1

      AMD is a chipset vendor. Now, they don't make the chipsets themselves. They design it but outsource the manufacturing to GlobalFoundries (GF). Here GF is an OEM that manufactures based on design and specifications of AMD. If you are creating a product similar to AMD, Intel, Samsung then you are a competitor to them.

  • @lf00t
    @lf00t 2 года назад

    You lost me with that example.
    Does DELL design, research, R&D those AMD CPUs and Samsung made SSDs? Or they just purchase already made ssds(components) which were designed, researched by samsung?

    • @3G4G5G
      @3G4G5G  2 года назад

      OEM can use components from other OEM/ODM manufacturers and vice versa. Why reinvent the wheel when it's already available.

    So, just as some feedback, you knwo I love your channel, but your audio in many of your videos, is way way under the norm. It's been getting worse as well. The audio levels are so low I have to crank up the volume on the master volume toggle. Is this something you can correct? it really makes your videos much harder to actually listen to...

      Thanks, will check. One of our laptops keep on reverting to the default setting, like what happened on this one but we can still hear it very well on 50% volume. Checked it on 3 computers.
