I think most of us Lao people that are offended are defensive because Laos has a history of always being labeled as the “inferior Thailand” out of ignorance. A lot of food sold in Thai restaurants actually originated in Laos like papaya salad and laab. In many cases, Lao people opened up Thai restaurants because Thai food is more know. It’s a touchy subject backed by some dark history. But also just because Lao people did it first, it doesn’t mean Thai people can’t adapt and make it their own, especially food from the Isan region that borders Laos. At the end of the day, both Laos and Thailand have AMAZING food everybody should try !
That makes no sense, if the food was good then it can stand on its own, early days every Asian was considered Chinese but Korean and Japanese people didn't say oh our food isn't popular so let's just call it Chinese food.
I'm Laotian American who lives in Nashville. I can confirm we do have the Southern accent. When my wife speaks Lao, the Southerner in her comes out and it's adorable.
Uncle Roger made fun of Lao dishes, but then he was invited to a Lao restaurant to try the food, which he really liked. What make Uncle Roger work is he can make fun of a place and its food but is always game to have an expert cook for him or introduce him to something new.
Here’s the fun part, a Laotian chef who was on Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen towers made a video challenging him on it. He went to her hometown of Minnesota to shoot a video with her.
Lao food is one of my top fav Asian foods! It’s almost as if Vietnam and Thailand had a baby but more Unami flavors. Must try dishes: Nam Khao (crispy coconut fried rice) Laos Sausages (Sai oo-ah) with jeow som (spicy dipping sauce) and sticky rice Saloon Yat Sai (pork tapioca balls dipped in sweet sauce) Mok pa (steamed fish in banana leaves) Khao Poon (curry soup with vermicelli noodles) Khao piak (chicken noodle soup with tapioca noodles) Khao soy (tomatoey soup base with fat noodles) Laos style papaya salad (fermented fish and crab is the difference) Steamed or fried meatballs with lettuce in sweet sauce Sin Savanh (beef jerky) Thom Ken (caramelized pork with eggs) Pun Bah (fish wraps) Khua mee (sweet noodles) Keng no mai (bamboo stew) Daht seen (Lao BBQ) Laap (larb) minced beef, chicken, duck Naem (sour cured pork) eaten as a side
This is all just like an old book called "Lof der Zotheid" written by Erasmus in 1509 where he criticised in a satirical way about the society, the people with power and even the church...😅 And he got away with all of it by saying that it's the character's opinion, not his'.
Haha.. I'm Lao and I was not offended by him. I don't watch his stuff, but he seems like somewhat of a comedian? Or he's playing a character, Idfk. What I do know is that he's helping put us on the map. He knew it would go viral. Well played 🫡 Now go get you some Lao food, beezys. Extra spizy 👅💦
6:20 ahh its all clicking now. Theres a restaurant in my hometown called Champa's Kitchen that does primarily Thai food but also features some Laotian and Cambodian options. The co-owner and head chef is Laotian and I guess calling her restaurant Champa's is pretty clever haha
I’m Lao, the joke wasn’t funny, but I knew it was a joke and wasn’t offended. Even if it wasn’t a joke, I wouldn’t have cared, people can have their opinion.
We have a Lao restaurant near my apartment and it’s different. Then again my family’s food (P.R.) gets called the same thing as Cuban or Dominican so I get why they would be upset. Similar history and ingredients but distinct taste is what I say makes the difference.
And I think it's because it's been Laotian and Cambodian whose not very known. Most people don't even know that country exist. Compared to other Southeast Asian Countries.
It was Lanxang, Lanna and Siam. Lanna became part of Siam, absorbing the Isan people, who culture is the same as Lao. Unfortunately, Isan people are proudly Thai today.
A lot of the frustration comes from Lao food being compared to Thai food when people don’t realize what they are eating is actually Lao food like Laab, Nam Khao, sticky rice, sausage, etc. Most Thai restaurants you eat at are actually Lao owned and disguised as Lao due to the lack of awareness on Lao food. Thai people look down on Lao people and use to call us and our food “dirty” but now that it is more mainstream, they claim it as theirs. A lot of tension between Laos and Thailand is due to the gerrymandering of the Issan region as it was part of old Laos and the erasure of Laos from Thai history (look up Thaiification).
The reason why Lao people got upset is because the comment uncle Rodger made perpetuates the stereotype that Lao food is the “shittier version” of Thai food. In the recent years, Laos and Lao food has been getting more spotlight with lots of Lao-only restaurants popping up and a large Lao-only food festival in San Diego but this comment reinstates a negative connotation about Lao food. It’s easy to say it’s not that big of a deal but food is a staple to the Lao culture so saying that Lao food is bad is essentially telling Lao people we aren’t worthy outside our homeland.
No the joke is that people think dissing some countries food is racist. Oh and keep joking about whites having no culture, that's very normal and not racist. Americans dude...
Hes just another guy with an opinion. Hes not a chef and his brand of comedy is all about making viral statements or clickbait videos. I wouldn't take him too seriously. Instead I would shine light on all the other unknown asian cuisines instead. The best food review show ever is an amazing channel with the right way to approach other cultures food. I mean how many Ayyyyee YAahhhhh can you hear before that shit gets old.
Some of the most popular Thai foods are from Isaan, which technically was once a part of Laos, before we were renamed. It's funny bc it's ignorant af and most people don't know how similar our cultures are.
Just got back from Thailand the food was good but I am definitely not used to eating that much fish. As an American I seeing all the fish alive before you eat them through me off unfortunately
the funniest thing about what uncle roger said is nobody that knows south east asian food would say thai food was good. i can see somebody from england because they have terrible taste in food. thai food is watered down Lao & Khmer food
I couldve sworn he made a video with mikey chen, but ended up taking it down cause he caught some heat from his chinese fans for making a collab with mikey chen.
The main ancient kingdoms of South east Asia were Myranmar (Burma), Siam and Viet, Manipur that is now in India was influenced by both South East and South Asia to this day.
Between Laos and Thai food, I'd prefer Laos. Certain Thai dishes are too sweet for my taste. Especially the papaya salad. The only Thai dish i love is the Thai Boat Noodles. Bomb. I would pick that over Vietnamese Pho anyday of the week.
Dood nobody knows where laos is even with se asians lol its just easier for people to know thai food then laos food but i think its more open now then it was decades ago. Food is different thou variation wise. Language is like 80% almost the same.

@@Zhcwu literally just name the other 2 other biggest and well known asian countries lol of course they will have their own name foods.
Yes. Here in minnesota, about half of the Thai restaurants are actually Lao but Thai cuisine is more recognizable so they just call it Thai food.
Exactly
Great explanation! Thank you!
I enjoyed when you had Uncle Roger on as a guest. Hopefully he can come back on the show again sometime.
This 🙌🙌

I hope more people will see it and go, "I wanna see for myself!" about Laotian & Cambodian food and go try it! 😆
Lmao nick at the end 🤣🤣🤣
It's like the key & peele Kebapi sketch with the Macedonian vs. Albanian food.
