  • On January 13, 1997, First Lieutenant Vernon Baker became the only living African-American serviceman from World War II to receive the Medal of Honor. He earned the award for destroying numerous enemy positions while leading an assault against a German stronghold near Viareggio, Italy, on April 5, 1945.
