#1 looking glass double slit experiment for its appeal to challenging video production #2 caryk's Scale of the Universe 2 for appeal to [metaphysical] semi-realism (little to no explanation required) #3 kurzgesagt's limits of humanity for its appeal moral realism (although cartoony, it's reasonable and affirming) Cheers again (:
Hey Brady! I remember subscribing to PV back during the first set of videos. Amazing how far you’ve managed to come since then and the huge positive impact you’ve made on so many people, including me. Cheers
I think Nile Red's video where he extracts gold from computer boards is one of my favorite RUclips science videos which got me watching many more science videos, from chemistry to astrophysics. Kurzgesagt's video on the comparative sizes of black holes ending with TON 618 is also a favorite. Cheers !
These are my favourite science RUclips creator content: 1)Tibees video that explains rainbows 2) Vsauce video that considers how the Earth is flat from the perspective of a relativistic muon 3) minutephysics video series on Special Relativity 4) 3Blue1Brown video on the Analytic continuation of Riemann Zeta function 5) Mathologer video about Riemann's paradox 6) Veritasium video on our greatest delusion
Is Your Red The Same as My Red has always been my favourite Vsauce video. It's a thought that I've had since I was in my early teens around the turn of the millennium, but assumed it was an absurd thought that no one I talked to about it would ever take seriously. Seeing that, not only have people talked about it, but it actually had a name (qualia) really helped me have more confidence in the thoughts I have that I expect to not be responded to well by others. If it turns out to be dumb, so be it, but I'd now be far more disappointed to have a thought that others had and to find out I could have learned how deeply some have thought about it but didn't because I didn't say it out loud.
Incredible video. I remember being a precocious pre-teen/teenager who obsessed over these videos. I'll forever owe all of these creators a debt for the way they influenced my love of science and my passion for science communication. Thank you for revisiting them!
Wow, I haven't felt so inspired about this platform in a while! With the pace of the internet it’s so easy to forget old videos, but they really weren’t that long ago, and lined up like this it feels like one big thing, a movement, the story of online science videos. And as someone who was influenced by almost every single one of these videos, it’s the highest honor to be a part of this group 💛
Let me tell you, that video was one of the best things I've ever seen anywhere. You have fully earned your place among VSauce, Veritasium, Hank Green, Up And Atom, and all the other great creators mentioned here!
BobbyBroccoli's "The man who tried to fake an element" is probably greatest of all time. It covers nuclear physics, history of the field and spices it up with drama. It is perfect. Also, it took me good several minutes to figure out where I know you from. Jet Lag.
I came to comment this one! Incredibly thorough explanations of element discovery and very intriguing storytelling. It’s not just RUclips content, it’s filmmaking and documentary journalism. I discovered it one day at work during some downtime and I couldn’t believe how well it was put together.
you are such a soft spoken person. It's amazing. I have been seeing your videos for years and years now. It's cool that you watch the other youtubers who talk about intellectual topics. Smarter everyday, vsauce, varitasium. are my favorites.
I am so glad that Vsauce got its own mention. While I agree with your pick, I think that his “Counting Past Infinity” and Banach-Tarski videos are also deserving of a mention.
I gotta vote for Anton Petrov- any video. Guy's one of the hardest working creators I know- daily videos, well researched, non-sensational, no clickbait, and best, he strikes a good balance between accessible and also not assuming his audience has never heard of a boson. 🕳
I think 3b1b‘s best video is “the most unexpected answer to a counting problem“, it absolutely blew my mind when I was like 13 and made me love mathematics
The Library of Babel is from a short story by Borges, well worth reading. As young computer scientists, back in university, a friend of mine pointed out that the entire library contains no information whatsoever. For every book that says something, you can find another one that says the opposite. I was pretty shocked to realize this was true!
It feels like you made this list just for me! I love watching all the creators you've mentioned (though I have my own opinions on their best videos) but I really enjoyed this
@tibees I could listen to you talk forever. I find it to be so fortunate that I share a part of the same timeline as you. I'm glad that we exist. Much love.
Thank you for your great idea and execution. I would like to suggest that you make another much bigger list of the best science/math/engineering videos, engaging your audiance to vote for the best of each year.
Thank you Tibees for sharing such an awesome list and introducing me to so many cool channels, would have loved to see more from my favorites Mark Rober, Numberfile, Real Engineering and Tibees :)
Well, that's a piece of information you come up with, lady! I had to stop it ever again to take notes about the videos and channels and makers you introduced. Got a long list to feast on right into the next cold winter evenings. Thanks!
Your content is always so Informative yet oddly relaxing in an asmr type way haha. Your visual explanations of abstract mechanics are probably the most comprehensive crash courses I've seen.
I found you on Nebula. How did I not find your channel so much sooner?! I watch almost everyone you have referenced. At any rate, I started watching some of your other videos, and I just LOVE your channel! Thank you so much for making yourself a part of this community and making insightful and meaningful contributions to this genre. I now have a new plethora of videos pertaining to so many of my interests, and people like you completely understand my excitement as the sane excitement is written all over your face in your own content.. and there is nothing more special than experiencing others speak and elaborate on their own passions, especially when they align with your own. Ugh.. I am smitten with the community as a whole. What a time to be alive...
Many of the best and most memorable RUclips science videos were created by you, Toby, especially many of the early informal videos where you would just talk with viewers throughout the video, sometimes giving advice, sometimes just sharing your struggles or goals, but always with science and your sparkling beauty in the background.
Honorable mention: All the Indian RUclipsrs with less than 13 subscribers that have been instrumental parts of our studies in one way or another. (In Homelander's voice): *They are the real heroes!*
This is such a great and useful video. I really appreciate the playlist because it’s allowed me to fill in the gaps that I’ve missed. More of this please.
vihart is literally the reason why I started watching science and math videos on youtube so I'm glad her pi day videos were mentioned! I remember I started using khan academy in elementary school to learn more math and one day I stumbled upon a section that featured her math doodling videos and I got obsessed with making hexaflexagons from that. Then the algorithm started recommending me more videos from veritasium, smarter every day, vsauce, cgp grey, mark rober, etc... I'm in college now so watching this video was really nostalgic for me because I totally forgot about how those early videos were like the gateway to me discovering how much I love science and math. If you're still reading this comment and looking for recommendations, I'd like to give a shoutout to Not David and Physics for the Birds :) They are smaller channels that use super interesting real world examples to explain math in simpler terms.
As a meta-addition to your list, I recommend Dan Olson's video "what is VSauce" which goes into the development of VSauce from a video game memes show to one of the most famous science shows in the world. He also puts this in the frame of a analysis of how people and their digital footprint relate to time in general.
"These plaques... could be our first chance to say _'Hello! we exist,'_ or, depending on how long humanity lasts, our only chance to say _'Hello! we existed. This is what we were.'_ " Oh, man.. vsauce. That video, those dudes are OG status for me.
Finally someone acknowledging the incredibly power of science in all the youtube videos They're free and full of knowledge, and incredibly important. They helped reignite my love for sciences and finding out more about our world. Like archaeology, physics , chemistry. And so many experiments. And soo many guides and inspirations . Its okay that you have a little bias towards maths and science 😂. We love your channel so much anyways .
This vid popped up on my suggestions page................the only video that was suggested that I really enjoyed. New Subscriber here, love maths and science.
Such a great list. I've seen many of the videos and look forward to checking out those I haven't. Your "Jody of Painting"-style videos would certainly be on my list, as well as the animated project you did - which is really a standout. Can't wait to see what you bring us next!
Thank you very much. I am sure that it was a tremendous amount of work; still you have created a video, which is a candidate for the best science video of 2024. Saludos
Nice list. 😊 A further RUclips science content maker you might be interested in is Angela Collier. Somehow similar to your videos, but very different nevertheless, her videos are not so much "here is a (narrow) subject, now I will explain it for 12 minutes". They are more a complex "train of thought" process, often provocative, not for casual listeners, but always quite intruiging. Your videos and hers are at the top of my favorites list.
Hey Tibees. I've seen some of your videos covering university entrance exams for different countries. I recommend you take a look at the iranian konkrur. I believe it is a lot harder that for example the chinese gaokao even though it is only mutiple choice. It consists of 40 math questions with 70 minutes of time. The topics are very wide. I won't spoil to much for you to find out more about it and I hope you see this.
2017 should've 100% been 'history of the entire world, i guess' from Bill Wurtz Fractals are cool. But the Bill Wurtz video is the single best video to ever hit the platform if you ask me
A (maybe not) surprising number of these also made an impact on me. While I'm no science content creator, it's cool to see that some of my favorite science videos inspired others as much or more. Thanks for the neat video!
My favorite is video that i never imagineded, never made, never have oprtunity to share and yet. Its full and prepared in my head waiting to someone to pick it up.
It's nice to get some positive perspective right now. Thank you! I love some Vsauce and Stand-Up Maths. I really enjoy the Vsauce videos on Lenz's Law and Which Way is Down. For Stand-Up Maths, I enjoyed the video on the Dream scandal for the dive into stats. Edit: I don't want to leave you out! You've helped me find several concepts much more approachable and helped me understand the 4th dimension in a way I never had before.
What a great idea for a video! I want to throw into the ring *Sabine Hossenfelder* 's channel. Aside from her regular format in which she updates us on Science News she is also looking a interesting ideas and tells us whatz Science has to say about it. The nonchalant manner in which she presents this to us is a real treat. I also want to mention *Dr. Becky* . Her enthusiasm for the advancements on the field of astronomy is unparalleled. Edit: Oh and the best science related video that I remember has to be *Sugar: The Bitter Truth* by Prof. Lustig. Less purely physics-related but boy did it change my life.
As great as 3B1b is, 2017 should have gone to History of the Entire World, I Guess, by Bill Wurtz. It is among the most influential RUclips videos ever.
For all watching this video, I feel like you would also enjoy Sebastian Lague's content. It's mostly focused on programming, nevertheless his video about ant and slime simulation is pretty great
there is a lot of roads on RUclips some big some small, one of them i occasionally follow is the science path, small in some places large in others, this video took me down a very well trodden and familiar path iv strolled over the years, thanks for reminding me of these forgotten gems.
Dear, you mised one important video I feel I must mention: the wonderful video in the Bob Ross style presented with a Rainbow on a chalk board by "TIBEES" 🙂
Nothing by PBS Space Time? They've done some superb videos. Check out: The speed of light is not about light. Fermilab has some nice explanations of fundamental physics such as relativity theory.
That Vsauce video holds a special place in my heart too, something about its congruent story crafting and storytelling really shines. Another good one would be “if”
Some of my personal favorite science(ish) videos not mentioned on the list: “Why do things keep evolving into crabs?” by PBS Eons. This video is the reason why everyone makes carcinization jokes now “The Aliens will not be Silicon” by Angela Collier (acollierastro). A brilliant explainer of why silicon isn’t as good as carbon at creating life “In Search of a Flat Earth” by Folding Ideas. A deeper examination of Flat Earth theorists, a demonstration that makes you viscerally understand the Earth is round, and a pivot to the sociology of QAnon (the conspiracy theory ruining American politics) “Wanderers” by Erik Wernquist. This gorgeous short film is a hypothetical look at humans exploring the solar system, narrated by Carl Sagan “The STRANGEST pair in nature” by Gutsick Gibbon. A beautiful look at the 40k+ year history of the relationship between humans and dogs “Demon Core - The True Story” by Kyle Hill. Really I could’ve put any of Kyle Hill’s Half-Life History videos on here. “I had to break all my beakers” by NileBlue (NileRed’s other channel). This is, by far, the funniest science video, possibly ever. “How Does Do Science?” by This Place. An actual explanation of the scientific method.
I still remember the first time I watched the Vsauce video on the Banach-Tarski paradox. It totally blew my mind, and it was my gateway to RUclips science. Michael's channel is amazing, definitely my favourite science youtuber.
Hey tibees, I hope you dont mind my wierd requests hahaha. I have another one. Can you perhaps film a play fight with your cats that would be fun! Perhaps you can show off how you play rough with them! hehehe lol btw you have a really soothing voice i noticed (but it could have been the weed LOL)
This kinda made me emotional. RUclips is such a goldmine of talented people :) Was also wondering where Vsauce was throughout the video and so the second you said you were gonna mention someone special I knew it was him. Michael, to me, has been perhaps the most influential person on the platform. I think he is the reason why I'm interested in science and math. And all these other wonderful people are the reasons why I'm still into it. So thanks for making this video
A friend of mine built a reverse-steering bicycle while we were students, and as I recall took less than a week to learn how to ride it (in the late 1980s), I never learned, though I did learn to ride the 3-man tandem that I built around the same time using reins from the back seat. Interestingly, in the context of what you said, it took me a few days, whereas it took others at most a an hour, because they knew that it was possible, and I didn't.
Here’s the playlist! ruclips.net/p/PLATpsZGmpkg94nOmAWCyctfPQxrarSyWY&si=GJ_9lphMdteCCTxO
What’s your favourite?
I'm so glad you posted this play list, that's my evening filled
vsauce('s) philosophy is just so existential dreading
#1 looking glass double slit experiment for its appeal to challenging video production
#2 caryk's Scale of the Universe 2 for appeal to [metaphysical] semi-realism (little to no explanation required)
#3 kurzgesagt's limits of humanity for its appeal moral realism (although cartoony, it's reasonable and affirming)
Cheers again (:
Missing ZeFrank
very excited to watch some of these for the first time !!
I suppose you're not in a position to include "Finding X" on the list, but FWIW it's up there on mine.
Lol
The legend!
We've been waiting.
Yes, she still need to find her complex vector position in 3d orthogonal space
@jagrdron3243 what's a complex vector?
Flattered to be mentioned in such esteemed company - thanks!
Hey Brady! I remember subscribing to PV back during the first set of videos. Amazing how far you’ve managed to come since then and the huge positive impact you’ve made on so many people, including me. Cheers
For a second I thought of yearly recaps and thought to myself “The 21st century is already over?? Time flies…”
" I am SO late to work!"
I think she's a physicist, not a mathematician. Time dilation is one of their favourite toys.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Thought of yearly recaps? Huh? I don't get this comment
@@HuckleberryHim Well you know, end of the year when everyone starts doing a recap of what happened during the past year
While wearing a Vsauce shirt. Gotta love it.
I think Nile Red's video where he extracts gold from computer boards is one of my favorite RUclips science videos which got me watching many more science videos, from chemistry to astrophysics. Kurzgesagt's video on the comparative sizes of black holes ending with TON 618 is also a favorite. Cheers !
nilered IS the reason I'm a nerd!
These are my favourite science RUclips creator content:
1)Tibees video that explains rainbows 2) Vsauce video that considers how the Earth is flat from the perspective of a relativistic muon 3) minutephysics video series on Special Relativity 4) 3Blue1Brown video on the Analytic continuation of Riemann Zeta function 5) Mathologer video about Riemann's paradox 6) Veritasium video on our greatest delusion
@@MrAlRats 'Our greatest delusion' hits harrrrrd. I have it in my 'Rewatch Often' playlist :). 🌈 viddy is marvelous as well. ♥
The minutephysics special relativity was so good and worked wonders in my brain 🧠
Is Your Red The Same as My Red has always been my favourite Vsauce video. same!! watching vsauce as a kid is a big reason why im going into science now
I wouldn't have expected a list like this until 2101 at the earliest.
I've marked it on my calendar! ;-)
@@steveswoodworking2504 And added "objective: survive" on my to-do list
The most memorable video for me would be the Parker square xD
It wasn't the best video, but it certainly was a Parker square of a video
'Finding X: a Mathematical Short Story' by a certain Tibees is the best ever!!!
Incredible video. I remember being a precocious pre-teen/teenager who obsessed over these videos. I'll forever owe all of these creators a debt for the way they influenced my love of science and my passion for science communication. Thank you for revisiting them!
Agreed!
Wow, I haven't felt so inspired about this platform in a while! With the pace of the internet it’s so easy to forget old videos, but they really weren’t that long ago, and lined up like this it feels like one big thing, a movement, the story of online science videos.

A Glorious Dawn gives me goosebumps to this day. MelodySheep’s science songs and videos were incredible.
One of my favorites is the megapixel image of the Andromeda galaxy and how that just blows my mind of every point of light being a star
I feel the same way about one of the Sombrero galaxy. It is the desktop background on my notebook computer.
Hey Tibees, thank your videos and your legacy on RUclips! I would add ny of your videos in the best one for the 21st century !
Yes it's excellent
Tibees you are my inspiration tysm!
I love that you printed out stills from the videos and used them as props. What a cool display you created.
you are such a soft spoken person. It's amazing. I have been seeing your videos for years and years now. It's cool that you watch the other youtubers who talk about intellectual topics. Smarter everyday, vsauce, varitasium. are my favorites.
I am so glad that Vsauce got its own mention. While I agree with your pick, I think that his “Counting Past Infinity” and Banach-Tarski videos are also deserving of a mention.
i find "how to count past infinity" endlessly rewatchable, it's been 8 years and i still rewatch it
Thanks!
Yay my cat got picked! Thank you, Tibees😊
I gotta vote for Anton Petrov- any video. Guy's one of the hardest working creators I know- daily videos, well researched, non-sensational, no clickbait, and best, he strikes a good balance between accessible and also not assuming his audience has never heard of a boson. 🕳
Is that the guy who styropyro mentions all the time as his fave?

Anton is a God among nerds 😂
hello wonderful person 👋😊
Goodness, I've not only seen all but # 2 and # 3 of these videos, but you're basically rhyming off the core of my subscription list.
I would put Dr. Angela Collier somewhere on this list. She's punching well above her weight considering she's only been posting for 2ish years
As soon as I saw the playlist, I went looking for Dr Collier. I was disappointed. Many good videos in the playlist tho
I show her spider video to all of my friends in academia.

What an amazing video! To see so many creator I love and follow thorougly, and yet to discover new ones I wasn't so familiar with! Thanks toby!
That's a summary we needed and we did not deserve. Thousand thanks.
Such a great video!
Nothing by PBS Space Time? They've done some superb videos. Check out: The speed of light is not about light. Fermilab has some nice explanations of fundamental physics such as relativity theory.
Very happy to see Cary (+ Michael) Huang (carykh) on this list, among so many others!! This video is so good.
That Vsauce video holds a special place in my heart too, something about its congruent story crafting and storytelling really shines. Another good one would be “if”
Great video, and a great selection of videos.
Some of my personal favorite science(ish) videos not mentioned on the list:
“Why do things keep evolving into crabs?” by PBS Eons. This video is the reason why everyone makes carcinization jokes now
“The Aliens will not be Silicon” by Angela Collier (acollierastro). A brilliant explainer of why silicon isn’t as good as carbon at creating life
“In Search of a Flat Earth” by Folding Ideas. A deeper examination of Flat Earth theorists, a demonstration that makes you viscerally understand the Earth is round, and a pivot to the sociology of QAnon (the conspiracy theory ruining American politics)
“Wanderers” by Erik Wernquist. This gorgeous short film is a hypothetical look at humans exploring the solar system, narrated by Carl Sagan
“The STRANGEST pair in nature” by Gutsick Gibbon. A beautiful look at the 40k+ year history of the relationship between humans and dogs
“Demon Core - The True Story” by Kyle Hill.
Thanks for your video! I was missing you.
I still remember the first time I watched the Vsauce video on the Banach-Tarski paradox. It totally blew my mind, and it was my gateway to RUclips science. Michael's channel is amazing, definitely my favourite science youtuber.
my favourite science youtuber is you! so all your videos are my top!!
"Outside In" dates back to the 1990's. One of my professors (Bill Thurston) showed me a preliminary version of the video in 1992.
@Tibees many many thanks for this - so much to explore!
Thank you for this, will be fun to go through the playlist. :)
Dr. Physics A? The guy is an absolute genius. And very iconic.
Very interesting playlist Toby! Glad you posted this video!
Veritasium's $10,000 wager embarassing a physics professor.
This video is awesome. Thank you so much.
A friend of mine built a reverse-steering bicycle while we were students, and as I recall took less than a week to learn how to ride it (in the late 1980s),
I never learned, though I did learn to ride the 3-man tandem that I built around the same time using reins from the back seat.
Interestingly, in the context of what you said, it took me a few days, whereas it took others at most a an hour, because they knew that it was possible, and I didn't.
I hope you and Leena keep your video descriptions updated like "Me at the Zoo" has been.
