    A front mounted Packard shutter would give you more flexibility. Then you get at least 1/5th and 1/25th. I've been using them for a variety of brass lenses over the last year. Mounted to a lens board with a hole the same size as the lens hood or front barrel. Just a friction fit. It works quite well.

    Amazing results, I never thought to rate Delta 100 that slow, I may have to try that now! Also, seconded that First Aid kit, I always keep one on me or in my car. Ever since slicing open my hands on broken glass and used Kleenex, Whiskey, and Duct tape to close up the wounds before getting to a drug store for proper equipment.

      Thanks, the results work for this lens combo, not sure how it would look with a modern day lens, you might see some flaws in the development, it's getting to be a pretty short time. I am going to try D76 at 1:3 and extend the development a bit.

    Todd, have you considered a Sinar shutter for this lens? The Canham already uses a Sinar lens board, adapting a Sinar shutter should be relatively easy. If you need any special modifications S.K. • @toddkorolphoto
      @toddkorolphoto  3 года назад

      Yes by using a much slower ISO, I could get the exposure time closer to where I wanted it, and the negatives wouldn't be as over exposed as they were in the first test. Such short development times creates a few other problems, but if I go to 1:3 on D76 I think it will be great. But with this lens and look, I am not too worried about any seen flaws.

  • @christiansteinway6928

    I have a somewhat related scanning question for you. I'm assuming you are scanning your 8 X 10 negatives on a flatbed scanner. The emulsion side must face the light source, which means the negative is plastic backing side down on the scanner glass, so how do you prevent Newton's Rings from showing up on your scans?

    I am really interested to see how a portrait will look with this lens and film combo. I Noticed that the tripod head seems to have quite a lot of height, would something lower profile like a big linhof ball head help to reduce shake ? I think you can also get larger plates that allow you to adjust fore and aft balance with a heavy lens. I am personally thinking of the the linhof 90mm levelling head (lower than ball) for my half plate work.

    • @toddkorolphoto
      @toddkorolphoto  3 года назад +1

      The head is pretty solid, but I have used a big Arca Swiss head in the past, might pull that out again. Those Linhof heads are really nice.

      The more the merrier. Why choose one?

    • @toddkorolphoto
      @toddkorolphoto  3 года назад +2

      Well the one thing that helps me a lot is I only work with one format at a time, so there are not too many choices in the truck. Also, I tend to gravitate towards a format for a project. So if I decide on a format to shoot a certain project I generally always stick with that format. 4x5 tends to be people and culture. 5x7 leans towards nature and landscapes, and 8x10 when I want a really distinctive look for a project. But there are times when I really think I should settle on one format and just work with that. Thanks for watching.

    Why do you use that lens with the 8x10? As you've seen at your first try, it's simply not a 8x10 lens, it's even barely a 5x7 lens, seeing the expanse of vignetting and blurring. That's just a waste of material, energy and effort (and blood in this case), since only approx. 50% of the paper is exposed and reasonably sharp, and the results are more or less unusable as pictures.

      I think it's an interesting look for some work, it's different. For some subjects it works really well, I also wanted to see how much drop off I get when I shoot at infinity and I also wanted to see how ISO 10 works which was the point of the video. It's about having a lot of different tools in the tool box as it were.

    • @m00dawg
      @m00dawg 3 года назад +2

      Agreed, Luudite! I really love the results too! They're not "normal" but that's why I love them! The vignetting and blurring is a really really cool look and it pulls my eye to the subject. It's not something I would have thought to do, nor would I have thought to pull Delta 100 3+ stops. But it works and I think is a good reminder that photography need not always be about "rules" like the previous comment seems to imply. It's not sensitometry, it's photography - it's a creative endeavor and I think these last few videos are a great example of that.
      I love the results, Todd, keep up the great work! And thanks for sharing the 10 ISO results in particular. Something I'll have to try sometime!

      @@toddkorolphoto I have to agree with Rabert, the off-center hard vignette is unappealing-- if it was a centered, soft vignette it would be fine. Are you still using f/4 on this lens? I'd like to see that on close-up macro shots where the bellows extension makes up more for the drop-off. The dinosaur was my favorite of this video, but I'd like to see it with the max aperture (f/45? f/64?) to see how that solves the drop-off problem.
