    I have been searching for medial meniscus tear surgical procedures. Your video explains the root cause, what/how in very details. I am 66 old, recently x-ray showed osteoarthritis on my left knee. My orthopedic doctor has already mentioned that I have meniscus tear will need surgery. I will seek for alternative rehab option.     So i have medial meniscus tear. Had all the symptoms you mentioned very severely, i didn't want surgery right off the bat, so i did PT, heat, and acupuncture. Took 5 months, but im happy with my choice.

    I think one of the biggest issues with things like meniscus tears, myofascial pain syndrome, overuse injuries, etc is sleep quality takes a hit due to pain in sleeping positions. Without proper sleep in which your muscles are relaxed, you will never get better or it will take much longer

      @@floatyseagull9472 Yep, pain during sleep hours keeps me awake. This year has averaged less than 1 or 2 hours a night. I'm weak and exhausted.⚕️🤔

      Elevated legs (using a pillow) helped ease with the pain that I experienced during sleep. Hope it helps you too.

    Got an MRI in two weeks. I think my knee issue is a meniscus tear , but could be MCL. Not sure. No locking, catching. Most days it does not bother me, but I lift weights and training legs inflames it and then walking with an inflamed knee will make it uncomfortable. If I try to lift heavy, I will get a sharp pain in the center of my patella and usually a few days after that I am dealing with an inflamed knee. I have modified my leg training so I am no longer doing movements that aggravate it. I am avoiding barbell squats, hack squats and leg press. For quads, I am only really able to do single leg press, Bulgarian split squats, and light single leg extensions. I can still go hard on hamstrings, calves, and abductor/adductors. I notice knee tracking over the toes is not good in my case. A box squat is a better option for me as it maintains a straight knee and shin alignment.
    I've started doing sled pulling and walking backwards on an incline and I think it has helped a bit, but too early to tell. I don't really want to go for surgery and will try everything I can do to heal or at least prevent it from getting worse.

    I have had many injuries to the knees due to work and after the first knee surgery have opted to do “self-care” thereafter for each surgery recommendation. Turmeric has been a staple in my supplementation. I noted that the brand supplement that you have recommended is substantially more costly than other brands comparatively.

      Thorne is NSF certified and is probably (?) the purest on the market. Athletes who get tested regularly by the world anti doping agency all use Thorne to ensure there are no contaminants.

    Best presentation I have seen on this subject. i am 71 year old endurance runner (marathon a year). I have degenerative problems with knees and acute injury in fast 5k during marathon training 2 years ago. Initially lots of pain and swelling. MRI showed 3 tears in left knee medial meniscus. With a month rest and 3 kenalog shots over past 2 years I have since run Berlin and London marathons. Sometimes no pain for a few months after shot. But a little twist in the wrong direction and it flairs up again. They don't want to give me more kenalog but will try hyaluronic acid injection in 3 months if still pain. Then if no relief PRP. I am wondering if I should ask them to go straight to PRP after watching your video. I have mild to moderate arthritis in knee with tears. Thanks so much for such a great video. You covered it all!

    Ive had a partial knee replacement in my forties. and total hip replacement four years before. I now after ten trauma free years got a torn menidcus in my 'good " knee. Its been present for two and a half months . Very bad pain despite the RICE treatment and injection. I am 67 and dont want to spend my remaining years in pain. I hope I will be offered another partial replacement in this knee when I get to see my consultant.

    I suffered a partial meniscus tear. I do not experience pain but I am limited with my leg movements. 2 doctors I've seen did not recommend surgery because they said it will likely make it worse. Previously, I was able to sprint up long flights of stairs like a mountain goat. Now I need to grab the hand rails and gingerly make my way up and down. But I can still workout at the gym albeit in a limited way and results come slower.

    Many of the excercises look terribly painful and are not possible. You neglected to mention deep need bending and the pain many of us have associated with that. I know I'm not the only one. No squats, deep knee bends or holding foot to butt (deep knee bend).Straight leg locks also kill the meniscus inside of the knee and are not possible.

    Great Video !! thank you. You mentioned that: " usually surgery is needed when having Bucket Handle tear". I am 53 and have a bucket handle tear ( MRI) , after rehab for 3 months, I can straighten and fold my knee with out limitation and with only minimal pain ( 2 out of 10), have no locking or give away, Should I consider Meniscectomy ? or more physical therapy ? thanks

      Key word is usually :)
      In general, the need for surgery is if the knee is locked up. Can't PT around that. But for my patients without a locked knee, definitely can be treated successfully with non surgical management.

    I’m an avid walker but about 4 months ago I dropped a granite cutting board on my foot and thought I would be ok, started moving my foot around and exercised it but a few months after that I went on 2 hikes it was great until the second one and I couldn’t step on my foot as the pain shot up my leg to my knees, I iced it first a few days then I started heating it and it felt better so I started walking again but after a few weeks it started again and I have been going to PT and listening to you I really need to start the exercises to get rid of pain but I’m holding off on the walks first now…. I’m also 65 y/o

    Is there proof that alcoholic beverages can cause knee injuries? I am 35. I started drinking about 3 years ago, only wine. But this year 2024 i been drinking more wine and alcoholic beverages cocktails. I have been sober for most of my life, and coincidentally, after drinking more, i got injured. I twisted my knee playing soccer. This has never happened before. I twisted my ankles before, but i was able to recover and keep playing well for many years. Now it's been months, and my knee hasn't recovered. 😞😕😩

    Dr. Peng; Years ago I had a hyperextension of my knee. A truck bumper pushed my knee backwards so far all I could hear was loud popping sounds.
    Being a MD's kid I tried to doctor the horrible swelling with ice and heat. So I've had knee pain ever since.
    The doctor I went to years later said I needed knee replacement, but started me on Cortisone shots every 3 months. I no longer take those shots.
    Should this Hyperextension of the knee been addressed first. Yes I do have Arthritis in the knee and I'm 75 now but not a whimp. I'm able to chace down my grandkids. I have always been an athlete person so am in good shape. I waited to have my knee injury looked at because I had no insurance years ago. Would like to know your thoughts. Kathleen

    My meniscus tore and folded over. I had surgery to repair 2 weeks ago. I have 4 more weeks on crutches. When can I get back to cycling, running and boxing

    Another excellent video that I have booked marked. I am 60 years old and 10 months into a complex meniscus tear that is slooowly getting better I think. Very little signs of OA and two doctors have stated I am a candidate for a meniscus knee scope. It's tough to commit when I have no loss of range of motion, just pain and discomfit. I can do anything but just not for long. One question I have, should you include a good hamstring strengthening exercise to prevent muscle imbalance?

    Thank you! Just entering the long healing journey of a meniscus tear diagnosis and coming to terms with no longer being able to be as active as I'd like. It's devastating but your video was so clear and logical and makes me feel so much more relaxed and comfortable about the road ahead and decisions I have to make. Can't thank you enough. I'm just a bit confused about the squatting and quad stretches you recommend in the rehabilitation program. In the start of the video you say that squatting and twisting make the meniscus tear worse and more inflamed - so why do you recommend squats for rehabilitation? Also, the quad stretch you recommend is the one thing I absolutely cannot do as it causes soooo much pain to the knee area since my meniscus tore - my body screams at me not to do it. Just wondering if I should push through the pain of the stretch and the squats to do it anyay??? Thanks for your help!

    I had knee surgery almost 5 years ago and recently had ex ray and no arthritis at all. My knee healed perfectly without Private PT just healed it myself. So it does work. Doing pt now for other and it’s NOT healing the tear. So for me surgery did it’s job. No arthritis has developed at all. So everybody is different. I am athletic. So it depends.

    One thing you don’t mention is shockwave therapy ? What do you think of it for meniscus tear ? Been done on rat meniscus and it healed. Could it help ?

    I have a bucket handle tear of the meniscus, no locking as of yet.
    It is quite a struggle wakeboarding and snowboarding but still thinking I should delay surgical removal for as long as possible?

    Type 3 internal and type 2 external meniscus tears were seen on an ultrasound of my knee, but it wasn't seen on the MRI. What does that mean? My knee is bent, and it's locked that way, and it's very painful.

    I am 67 female, not overweight and fairly active. I have had two tears in 12 months, two scopes to repair and clean out osteoarthritis, 8 weeks out of my recent surgery ( I also had PRP with second repair)8 weeks post op i had a hard impact with the skull of an 80 lb dog in my surgery knee. I am certain I have retorn it and wondering if this would be the best time for knee replacement since this would be my third tear. I am growing wearing and it has limited my quality of life. Thank you

    Hi Dr Peng, I have a lateral meniscus bucket handle tear that’s flipped but I’ve never experienced and locking or catching of the knee. I can straighten my knee and bend it. Do I still need surgery?

    I was injected steroids shots on my 2 knees las sat..and doctor suggested that after 2 wks I need to undergo PRP for 3 sessions..is there any alternative way to heal mye iscus tear?I'm 54 yrs old weighing 80kgs at my 4'21 height

    I have watched a number of videos by PT's about exercises for knee pain/meniscus and they all seem to have different approaches, which leads me to believe that they really don't know what they are doing.

    So since i was a kid, about 13, .y right kneecap has randomly dislocated. 4 weeks ago it popped out, my right knee was essentially facing east. Since then it has still be painful and a lump behind the knee, doctor today said its not a clot or classic signs of a bakers cyst but has put me forward for a mri to rule in or out what it could be...couldnt they put a mesh
    Over the kneecap to keep it in place?

      Have you investigated Prolotherapy or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy (which is Prolotherapy with platelets from your own blood added)? The base of this is a sugar solution along with a numbing agent (like lidocaine, etc) and it’s injected into ligaments and tendons. Your body then responds to that irritation by laying down more collagen. Tightens things up. Best of luck

    What exercises are best as I have two knees with torn? I am walking with the aid of crutches. The left knee has two meniscus tears and an old damaged ACL connection point to the knee from 1987. The right knee has a single meniscus tear and was injured in October of 2023.

      I'd suggest doing ankle and hip stretches. Keep those areas mobile and flexible and your knees will love you and heal right away. Stay away from heavy or long knee exercises. Give it a year or two and it will heal fully.

    I hurt my meniscus doing body weight squats been a week i can barely bend the leg with wait on it not much pain just some stinging in the miniscus . Should i do more squats now or wait another week ? Just squats seem so hard on my knees i squat everyday for my job and then randomly one day boom a stinging pain and weakness

    Sir iam from india i have problem in my meniscus my mri scan shows
    -grade lll injury of medial meniscus (bucket-handle tear)
    -partial tear of Acl (likely low grade partial tear). DD :High-grade partial tear
    -Mild medial compartment chondromalacia
    -moderate knee joint effusion
    -few small popliteal lymph nodes pls suggest me a option surgery or nonsurgery program

    This is a great video if you are an athletic 20-something, but it is not very helpful for someone 50+ who has balance or arthritis issues and is worried about falling and re-injury when doing the exercises. Remember, Doctor, one day you will be old, too!
