IMDB usually rates movies out of a score of 10. However, spinal tap is rated out of a score of 11
Haha, it’s true! That’s awesome! Hahahaha!
Virtually all of the dialogue in this movie was improvised. Actors were given a rough outline of the scene, but almost all of it is on the spot, with director Rob Reiner using as many first-takes as he could to ensure genuine reactions. Great movie. Great reaction!
I think they call that retro-scripting. I know some tv shows that were designed like that; like Home Movies and Dr Katz.
"I'm just as God made me, sir." most underrated line in the whole movie.
Yes! One of the best comedies ever. Many bands "hated" this movie because how accurate many of those ridiculous situations were
Alice Cooper once said, "There were too many things going on there. Little things, that just a writer wouldn't know about. Somebody talked".
I remember hearing somewhere that the late, lamented Eddie Van Halen cried watching this.
Lenny Kravitz banned this movie from his tour bus because how accurate it was.
Many bands loved it too, also many of the incidents were based on things that happened to bands
The famous dramatic pause and 'These go to eleven' is an iconic comedy line that you hear fairly often.
On the movie's IMDb page the rating is on a scale that goes to 11. :)
The BBCi player volume control goes up to 11.
The most funny thing was that the OctoKrool brothers treated this whole movie as if it was for real.
One of the great comedies, done by geniuses. They spent a year writing a backstory for Spinal Tap, REALLY detailed, so that when they shot the improvised scenes, they could make up anything they wanted but it would be consistent.
I agree, best comedy ever made. If you haven't already then check out the band audio commentary on the DVD/BluRay release, just as funny as the movie itself.
@@1977Suspiria No lie......you just gave me an idea for something to put on my Christmas list. in the words of ZZ Top, "And I thank you.".....
TIST was one of the few movies that I saw in the theater before very much was known about it. Needless to say, it is now difficult to imagine a world where Spinal Tap never existed. This movie was so influential and appreciated by countless musicians, metal or otherwise.
The actors in the "Band" actually played their instruments for the movie, and later did a limited "Tour" as Spinal Tap. There is an album from this movie as well as a second album that the band did for the tour.
I was fortunate to see Guest, McKean and Shearer in concert as themselves, where they performed Tap songs, and Mighty Wind songs and told hilarious stories. McKean’s beautiful wife, and brilliant actress in her own right, Annette O’Toole came out and performed Kiss at the End of the Rainbow with him, which she co-wrote.
@@ronbock8291 Oh I didn't know he was married to Annette O'Toole. That concert sounds awesome. Sorry I missed it.
There's also a third album from 2012 - "Back From the Dead"
Spinal Tap performed on Saturday Night Live multiple times. First heard " Big Bottoms " on that show. Three bass guitars to enhance that bottom sound. What a hoot.
That makes that one episode of the Simpsons where Bart and Milhouse went to see them in concert all the more hilarious.
_"The authorities said, 'You know, best leave it unsolved.'"_ 😂😂😂
Part of the beauty of this film is that it could be about almost any band. The team basically pulled together every rock and roll trope and strung them together - from the unwelcome girlfriend (think Yoko, Courtney or Nancy), to getting lost backstage, disagreements over marketing, etc. There's a great interview with Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick that could easily be the guitar collecting scene. There are a lot of bands out there that think the story is about them. (I actually saw a Peter Gabriel concert where the drummer emerged from the stage in a box, which had to be removed by the crew and reminded me of the pod scene.)
BTW, for a brief while I sold shoes at Macy's Herald Sq, and did in-fact sell "quality footwear" to Michael "David St. Hubbins" McKeon.
I’m a musician and this movie hits home. I know it’s satire but what they do is do perfect. Always go to 11!
11/10
Truly a legendary band! Spinal Tap is possibly the most important and influential band that was ever called Spinal Tap. I’m really glad that you got to witness their existence.
I was working as a tour manager in the late 80s, and this movie was on every tour bus that had a VCR.
always fun to see the amount of time it takes viewers to realize it is a total parody and not a serious thingy
In this case you are still waiting.
You hate mimes until you find out it was Billy Crystal and Dana Carvey as the mimes
Can you blame them? After all, "Mime is money"...
The commentary track whith the main 3 in character is absolute gold.
All of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries are funny and worth seeing.
I've seen this film about 1,000 times and never get bored of it. I also saw them live on their 1992 tour, 2nd row center. It was a hilariously fun night. Hard to believe Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins) was in Lavene & Shirley, Better Call Saul and this. He's amazing. And Christopher Guest as Nigel went on to make other mockumentaries, like Best in Show and tons of others. The cast is comedy royalty.
Have you watched the 4 hour workprint ?
@@EarthdogGFX Excerpts, not the whole thing, but thanks for the reminder!
Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins) was a cow f**ker in Boston Legal.
Came here to say all the same things! Nicely done!
Look for Lenny and the Squigtones on Dick Clark, it’s on RUclips someplace. It’s when Christopher Guest debuted his Nigel Tufnel character.
"I think the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge Monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf"
Dudes! You do know that this wasn’t a Real Band….or even a “real” Documentary. It’s a spoof about Rock Bands, and what they experience all the time, but turned into a big joke. It’s a brilliant Comedy. 😂
"Is he a dumbass?"
You're starting to understand the movie.
It hurts you guys don't recognize so many comedy legends in this.
I'm not sure they recognized it was a film.
They didn't realise it was British humor done by Americans.
They’re too young to recognize most of them.
One of the best things about this movie is that a lot of the songs are actually good. Big Bottom is a BANGER.
Yes, I just said that.
Did you ever see David Gilmore on stage with Spinal Tap playing Big Bottom?
@@nellgwenn No, but that's hysterical. Spinal Tap is really an entity unto themselves in every sense, but I always said if they sounded like ANYBODY it was a cross between Floyd and Van Halen (or Poison maybe).
Soundgarden covered Big Bottom at some of their live gigs, you can search for a vid on here. It's quite surreal seeing the late, great Chris Cornell singing about mud flaps, but they transform the song into an incredibly heavy headbanger, it's really quite something.
"Well, this piece is called 'Lick My Love Pump.'"
Fun Fact: The actors are all competent musicians and they're actually playing on the soundtrack.
Also, This Is Spinal Tap should get 11 stars. That's 1 more than 10. There is not a full script to "This Is Spinal Tap". There is just a general outline to the film. The actors created their own lines on the spot. Hilarity ensued. I mean, if you can't have fun putting a tiny "Stonehenge" in front of a bunch of actors and seeing how they react, you're just not trying. The whole thing is just perfectly made.
Another fun fact, the quick cut as soon as Nigel tells him the piece was called lick my love pump is because Rob Reiner just burst out laughing
I like to think that the "Lick my love pump" is a Mozart reference to his song "Leck mich im arsch".
There’s a piece of poop sliding out of my poop hot pocket as we speak boys and here’s an update through the wormholes of the internet as this shitstorm unfolds
“It’s sexist.”
“What’s wrong with being sexy?”
Sexist not sexy.”
“There’s a fine line between clever and stupid.”
Little known fact but VIV SAVAGE, the keyboard player, also spontaneously combusted. David and Nigel said they were shocked to discover he was actually a drummer all along.
Do you fellows realize this band isn't for real? It's hard for me to tell! This is some very talented improv actors who created a band to poke fun at hair bands and all the conventions of a touring heavy metal rock group. The actor who played Nigel Tufnel, (real-life name Christopher Guest) took this same formula and applied it to dog shows (Best in Show) and small-town America putting on a musical (Waiting for Guffman) and other projects. Back when this movie first came out, Spinal Tap was booked as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live. There was no pre-announcement that this band is just made-for-comedy. I seem to remember they sang Big Bottom ("how could I leave this behind?"). I remember going to school the following Monday and hearing the stoner kids talking about how that band rocked pretty hard but they just weren't really all that good. They believed this was a real band!
I think they never caught on and they think Spinal Tap is real.🤣 Was a great reaction anyway. Christopher Guest is married to actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
"That's beautiful, what do you call that? This is called Lick My Love Pump." That line kills me every single time. So chaotic that you can only laugh. Rob Reiner is such a talented director. Please watch A Few Good Men.
Derek- Harry Shearer- Best known as multiple 'Simpsons' characters- Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, etc.
Finally I found the Comment I was looking for!!!!
I showed this movie to my friend....he had a seizure laughing at the exploding drummer part 😂
Jeanine was their Yoko.
BEST mockumentary ever!!!!
there's a large number of cameos in this. Billy Crystal & Dana Carvey as mime waiters ("mime is money!"), Ed Begley Jr as the original drummer, Bruno Kirby as the limo driver, Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, WKRP in Cincinnati's Howard Hesseman as manager of rocker Duke Fame, Fred Willard as an Air Force Lieutenant & a few I've probably forgotten.
Anjelica Huston was the Stonehenge designer, Patrick Macnee from The Avengers is one of the industry people at the party in the beginning, Paul Benedict from The Jeffersons was the hotel front desk man.
Holy shit, I never knew it was Billy and Dana. It's hard to see them with all that makeup.
Nigel is played by Jaimie Lee Curtis's husband Christopher Guest.
His fingers go to 11 👋🖐☝️
and an English Lord- the Marquis of Hayden Guest.
If you can't turn it up to 11, why bother? This is truly an awesome movie with an amazing cast and truly fun cameos. Great reaction!
Oh yes, this movie is a treat. The first time I watched it, I was at university and I didn't know it was a "Mock-umentary". It took me a minute to realize, but being a fan of older heavy metal bands at the time the movie came out, their story was consistent with the road stories of bands like Black Sabbath, KISS, and early Rolling Stones. As it turns out, the vignettes portrayed in this film were actually collected from many of the older bands' real experiences. If you want a true band history check out "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" (2008) which is the "Rock-umentary" story of the Canadian heavy metal band of the same name.
I was going to suggest the Anvil story, too.
The bit with the finger sandwiches kills me every time.
Everything's folded.....
Elton John (wouldn't you know) claimed to have had a similar freak-out re backstage catering - "when the bread won't fit on the cheese"
The parts at the end always kill me. They seem so insane like an actual celebrity.
“This is my exact inner structure done in a t-shirt. It’s actually medically accurate.”
Almost 40 years later...there is a sequel in the works. All the original talent. Can't FUCKING wait!
You know what I hate about this film? I hate the fact I get emotional when David nods to Nigel to come back on stage with him and play. Damn you for making me feel things! :)
I saw them live as Spinal Tap, supported by themselves as the Folksmen 😂
Yo that's pretty cool lol
As a musician I can say this is my favourite movie of all time. My band and I yell Rock and Roll when going to the stage. Every time.
You recognize none of the actors or musicians? You take it seriously. That's the funniest part
Guys, it's a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐲. Relax. ♥︎
Many years back, they put out another album, "Break Like The Wind". They were doing radio promotion for it, and casually mentioned at the end of the interview that they were auditioning for a new drummer. It was so perfect.
For some other music-related movies you might enjoy, I recommend Airheads (starring Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi and Adam Sandler, with a horde of fun cameos) and an indie vampire/rock/comedy movie called Suck.
And their album from 2012 - "Back From the Dead"
There's actually a video somewhere on RUclips of Spinal Tap's drummer auditions
Airheads cameo.. Lemmy
These guys actually think it was real. Unbelivable.
As I guitar player, I can answer, "How many guitars do you need?" It's quite simple really. Just one more.
Hey - you guys know Nigel's also 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐱-𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧 from "The Princess Bride," right?! ♡
His fingers?
They go to eleven.
@@notabritperse 𝘩𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘩𝘢 that's brilliant! 😹
This movie is still the gold standard for mockumentaries. Follow closely by Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman.
Well that flew so fast over your heads I'm surprised your caps didn't fall off!
The round meat, square bread bit is hysterical. It was inspired by a moment in the Pink Floyd Live In Pompeii video. At one point a piece of round pie is rejected because it wasn't as good as a piece from a square pie. So many scenes were lifted from real band stories and films. This IsSpinal Tap is a true classic! Great choice!
the lip sores... the 80s- groupies- herpies.
David- American actor Michael McKeon- best known as Lenny from 'Laverne and Shirley' back in the 70s-80s.
more recently, he plays Chuck in Better Call Saul
The first time that I saw this at maybe 12 years old, I actually understood that what I was watching was the first of its kind. It was the first “Mockumentary”. Before the genre even existed.
This is definitely the best reaction to "Spinal Tap", firstly because you found it so funny and secondly, because (unless you were acting) you reviewed it deadpan as if it was a real rockumentary. But that's brilliant as well - thank you!
😂😂🤦♂🤦♂
The bassist is Mr Burns, Principal Skinner and Kent Brockman from the Simpsons. The lead guitarist is the man with six fingers from Princess Bride. And yes they were really playing those songs.
The scene where Ian calls the front desk agent a "twisted old fruit" for screwing up the reservation was at the Holiday Inn in Burbank, CA. Lol - I used to work at that front desk in 2000. When I first walked in there, I thought to myself that it looked familiar from somewhere.
These guys don’t seem to get that it’s a mockumentary.
This movie has the best commentary track. It's the band all in character and honestly, it's funnier than the movie itself.
The outtakes are brilliant. Especially the stuff about Derek's divorce.
You telling that Fran Drescher's way of speaking is hard on the ears is gold. As if your twin brother"s constant yelling is a delight (mike clipping all the time)...
This same group of guys also made BEST IN SHOW, A MIGHTY WIND, and FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. They're kind of like the Monty Python of 'mockumentary' movies, and each one is hilarious in the way they skewer each kind of subculture that each movie is about. They also voice characters for the SIMPSONS that you'd probably recognize.
Ooo I haven't seen for your consideration. Mighty have to try and hunt it down.
Also from Christopher Guest, Waitinng for Guffman
Did they realize this is a parody of the music business?
A Mighty Wind created by the same group is another comedy winner! 🎶
The bass player actor is Harry Shearer, and along with an incredible comedic history on public radio he’s regularly done the voices for half a dozen characters on The Simpson series since its beginning.
@@gsparkman He was also Handsome Dan in Wayne's World.
This movie for me goes up to 11.
One of the greatest films ever. And what a cast! You can never watch it too many times.
they talked over the iconic “this one goes up to 11” 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
I love how the puppet show got top billing over Tap lol
Love this movie! Crank it up to eleven!
Please react to “Best In Show” next. Was done by the same group from this movie. Absolutely underrated hysterical movie.
I worked a bit in college making contracts with performers and their Riders to the contract were crazy sometimes. Remove all green M&Ms, crust cut of bread, give band 30 minutes undisturbed to meditate before going onstage, etc. The sandwich scene rings so true about nervous pickiness of some musicians.
A lot of it wasn’t pickiness. Van Halen used to ask for one colour of M&M’s not because they wanted one colour but to see whether the venue would actually read the rider & would do what they were told to do, as they had lots of pyros & effects & they knew that if the venue was so sloppy that they couldn’t even do the rider properly they probably couldn’t be trusted with the more important stuff like making sure the safety was on point. It was about seeing how professional the venue was.
Some bands have those just to be sure the riders were actually read. (Or what Nathan posted while I was typing)
I've seen the 'behind the scenes' myself both as a musician and sound engineer and never demanded odd stuff. I know from other larger bands that they sometimes had a reason for this though. One said that he asked for a quite rare honey type. If the organizer actually tried to do this less relevant task, the odds of the rest being well organized were higher. So this was an extra way to test organizers. I preferred some quiet before going onstage but never needed to ask. A band member preferred specific simple food to have some routine in different places. Though funny enough, a few times organizers did something extra without us asking just because they assumed :P
Its been decades most people know those aren't demande per se. They put those to check if people in charge even bother to read the real and neccesary demands
It wasn't just about pyros and the obviously dangerous stuff. I remember seeing in some documentary that in some venues the stage structures might not even take the weight of all the gear or the electrics might not be up to task. (Can't remember which band, though.) When you get down to it, on a stage with just the sort of necessary equipment, it literally weighs a ton and uses loads of power, etc. So, before they even set up or unpacked their gear and did all the work, they could go to the backstage and simply see whether the candy bowl contains a specific colour or not, etc. Instead of then spending time arguing with the venue manager, or whoever, whether the structures can support all the weight and whether it's all proper, etc., you know, technical stuff that would be a hassle to get into and difficult to prove, they could just point at the simple, obvious breach of contract and cancel the gig before they had to do all the work for nothing or work in dangerous situations and invite a crowd of people in there.
Classic... you don't recognize Fran 'The Nanny' Drescher as Bobby Fleckman... and Billy Crystal as mime waiter.
Bill Crystal and Dana Carvey!
Kramer from Seinfeld is helping unloading the truck in the beginning.
@@jmuduke99 and Angelica Huston as the woman who designed Stonehenge.
I don’t think they recognized it as a comedy.
@@johnmoreland6089 I was going to say, was it just me or did it seem like this one went over their heads?
Please watch another British movie called Strange Fruit which is a movie about a older rock band reunited for a tour around Europe. Its really funny. There is The Commitments which is a Irish movie about the start of said band and their life together. The movie did so well that the actors ended touring the world as The Commitments. They were amazing.
Appropriately, I just listened to their album, "Break Like the Wind" in my car on the way to/from work last week. And I laughed my [buns] off! Truly one of the greatest commute albums ever. : )
"Are we going to do Stonehenge tomorrow?"
"NO WE'RE NOT GOING TO FUCKIN' DO STONEHENGE"
That cracks me up every time!
When Metallica was asked about their black album they said "well, Spinal Tap did it first". The actors wrote and played the songs, and they sometimes go on tours in character.
To be fair, Prince did it before either of them.
I could be remembering wrong, but I thought Prince did his in 1987 or so. Spinal Tap was 1984.
@@timprice5747 Prince did his in the very early 1980s. I believe either 1980 or 1981. I know he recorded it before his 1999 album and that was released in 1982. It's possible it might have been 1978 or 1979 but I think it is more likely to be early 80s. 1987 was when Prince did his Sign of the Times album. Also Prince's Black Album was never officially released so it is possible 1987 may have been when the bootlegs of it started to surface but it was recorded long before then.
i love the writer Christopher Guest, all of his other mocumentaries and music are also good
Yes the history of drummers being replaced was very common with rock groups. That’s why it’s funny in this mockumentary
You guys have got to see "Shakes the Clown"
It has a classic mime scene you guys will love.
Nigel (Christopher Guest) directed this and he has a string of movies that use a lot of the same actors and allow for a lot of improvised dialogue. Best in Show, a Mighty Wind, and my favorite Waiting for Guffman are all brilliant. Also side note Nigel and David (Michael McKean) actually wrote and performed all the songs for the movie.
Rob Reiner directed this. Guest did direct the others.
@@elizabethmuhleisen357 yes correct. My bad.
Waiting for Guffman is my favorite, too.
The DVD for this movie is funny because it includes a little "where are they now" featurette for the documentarian, which is just Rob Reiner still wearing the same hat and not at all subtly saying he was available to film other documentaries.
Idk if you're understanding the humor or not. I can't tell. Either way this is one of the funniest movies in history and never gets old
I have "lick my love pump " as my ringtone it's the greatest running joke over.
The Stonehenge mishap - a real thing, if inversed. Black Sabbath had a tour planned for their Tyr album, but miscalculated feet and meters, so instead of a fairly tall 18 foot three-piece installation, it was an enormous structure no stage could fit.
I’m honestly not sure if you guys know that Spinal Tap is not a real band. Which I love.
I don't think they knew that was rob Reiner.
Spinal tap were originally a spoof band. I seen another rockumentary about the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil
"Fuck the napkin!"😂😂😂😂
All of the terrible things that happen to Spinal Tap happened multiple times to multiple bands. :D
This has been called one of the most chillingly accurate documentaries in history by more than one actual rock band. My favorite bit of "Spinal Tap in real life" trivia is that one of R.E.M.'s early, Murmur-era gigs was, no shit, at an actual Air Force base.
Well it's one louder.
The lead singer is Saul Goodman's brother.
The bass player is Kent Brockman.
And the "kick my ass" guy wrote It's Raining Men.
I watched your video for over 38 minutes and still don't know whether you guys realize this movie is a comedy featuring a fictitious band. lol
YES!!!!! Finally they watch Tap!!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
they seemed to think it was a real documentary.....
...finally watched Tap,....and the whole thing went over their heads.😂😂
Now we need Best in Show and A Mighty Wind
“This twisted old fruit”.
That sounded so much like Piers Morgan
Spinal Tap did an actual tour. I saw them play the Warfield in San Francisco. Awesome show.
Uh, you guys do know this is not real, right? Cause some of your reactions seem like you don’t realized it’s all a joke
A little tidbit about Christopher Guest, he’s been married to Jamie Lee Curtis 40 years.
For more great "Mock"-umentaries, there's "The Rutles" Beatles spoof, "Best In Show" dog shows, "A Mighty Wind" folk music, or “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” Woody Allen has done a couple: "Take the Money and Run," and you can find a bootleg of the never-released "Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story" (which sends up the Nixon Administration) on RUclips.
One of my favorite movies of all time!
Fran Drescher was the hostess of the party whose voice you hated so much. She was probably most known for the sitcom The Nanny that ran through the 90s.
The head mime waiter was comedian and actor Billy Crystal, and the waiter was comedian and actor Dana Carvey. Both have been on SNL as well.
Artie Fufkin (of Polymer Records) was played by Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's band leader on his late night talk shows.
I took the character of Jeanine to be more or less a spoof of Yoko Ono in a way. Coming into the band hooked up with the lead singer and making all sorts of changes that were not necessarily taken very well.
By the by, I'm a karaoke DJ, and I sing Big Bottom frequently. \m/- -\m/
I always thought the name Fufkin was a nod to Martin Scorsese from the movie The King of Comedy where Robert De Niro plays Rupert Pupkin.
After this movie gained cult status, especially among musicians, Marshall started making amps that go to 20.
Brilliant film. If you want a recommendation for another excellent Mocumentary, then watch The Rutles - All you need is Cash, which is a brilliant parody of The Beatles. Another brilliant film about a rock band is the comedy drama film Still Crazy (1998).
