My babas and dedos lived their until 1913. May there be an eternal peace between the Greeks and the Bulgarians!
This was so beautiful to watch. My family just did something very similar to you a few weeks ago. We stayed in Florina as our base and then hired a car to go up to our grandparents villages which was about 20 minutes away Neret (Polipotomos) and actually found their homes from talking to the lovely village people. The best experience for us. It’s just the most beautiful scenery and like going back in time. Just beautiful.
I, too, visited my ancestral village in 2018. We may have crossed paths. Your mum's village is beautiful. It's very similar to and not very far from my Baba and Dedo's village, with the same spectacular mountain views. My Baba and Dedo's family owned a delightful little café so similar to the one you stayed at. I even experienced the same interaction with the village cats and dogs following me and enjoyed feeding fallen apples to the few goats.
