Anyone new to Big Finish should start with the content Robert Shearman wrote for them. He was the writer of Dalek in season 1 of NuWho, and his contributions to Big Finish are all spectacular. Holy Terror, Chimes of Midnight, Jubilee, Deadline and especially Scherzo are some of the best Doctor Who content ever produced, and they're fairly inexpensive unlike the newer stuff

Big Finish does great work with Doctor Who audios. Some of my recommendations - based on my very limited experience with the ones on Spotify - are anything with the 8th Doctor, 'I, Davros' if you want to look into the Doctor free audio stories and either The Holy Terror or Jubilee if you want to listen to what the 6th Doctor could have been (although you may want to listen to Marrian Conspiracy before Jubilee to get a companion introduction for Evelyn Smithe)

Best place to start is the original run of 50 audio stories, starting with The Sirens of Time and ending with Zagreus. These feature the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Doctors and include many of the best Who ever made. It also includes the Dalek Empire arc - 4 loosely bound stories involving multiple doctors and are all excellent and the Charley arc, based around newly introduced 8th Doctor companion Charley Pollard, starting with Storm Warning. It's really worth your time to listen to Big Finish if you're pining for some Who but have grown bored of watching the show over and over again.

    • @elgroucho

The first 50 main range are on Spotify for free as well as the first 4th and 8th doctor series. If I had to recommend any then it would have to be I, Davros as it greatly expands on the mythos behind Davros.

As a fan of Fifth Doctor my introduction to Big Finish was "The Elite" and It's still one my favorite stories.
But aside from this pretty personal to me episode I went ahead and also listened to Spare Parts and after that I went on Eight Doctor spree, and loved it. Many people have pointed out it has a great arc and has this transitional vibe from classic to nuwho and you SHOULD get to it sometime, it's awesome.

Seeing Harry enjoy listening to a Big Finish Story makes me really happy! Since one of the few complaints he has is the lack narration, I wonder if he would enjoy a Missing Episode audiobook which DOES have narration
I remember Harry on the Discord said that his dream Doctor Who story would be a historical set in East Asia over a long period of time, so him listening to Marco Polo’s Narrated Soundtrack would be a very good experience for him. Marco Polo is after all one of the best Doctor Who stories I have ever experienced and my favourite 1st Doctor Story

  • @Taka_Sakagami

The Big Finish story you're looking for is The War Master series. Derek Jacobi as The Master, parading around the Time War. It makes for an incredible contrast to the usual Doctor-led adventures.

4th Doctor: The Justice of Jaxlar
    5th: Spare Parts
    6th: Jubilee
7th: Project Destiny (But really you should listen to Project(s) Twilight and Lazarus first)
    8th: Chimes of Midnight
War: All 4 series, they're all good
    10th: Time Reaver

Excellent review, it is refreshing to see a review from someone who is completely new the audios giving objective analysis, as I think the fanbase has a tendency to put audios like Spare Parts on a pedestal while ignoring some of the legitimate issues that you bring up here. Just to address a couple of your main concerns in case someone else hasn't already brought it up:
    - Big Finish soundtracks do diversify as the ranges progress, early on they tried to adhere to the same sound design as the classic series - as you said, going for 'authenticity' over actual effectiveness, but that was mostly phased out by 2005 and modern Big Finish audios use a variety of scores - a prominent example is the other great Cyberman Big Finish audio, 'The Harvest'
    - Similarly to the music, Big Finish grow out of the 'look Doctor, we're stood in a room approximately four foot by six foot by eight foot with one window' and newer Big Finish audios have improved the dialogue massively to make it sound more natural with less examples of characters just stating what's going on
    - Big Finish audios starring old cast members will often try to avoid mentioning much about the Classic series for the benefit of those who haven't seen it - this works fine with Six, Seven and Eight but unfortunately the Fifth Doctor didn't seem to get the memo so he tends to go on about Adric a lot, especially in Cyberman stories.
If you plan on doing any other Big Finish reviews, I'd recommend Jubilee, the audio drama by Robert Shearman that he used as the basis for his TV story 'Dalek' from Series 1 of the revival. I'd be interested to hear your opinions on it as someone who gives honest objective criticism.

Listen to the war master volumes 1+2, they are easily the best things big finish has done based on the modern show, and theyre both on sale until the 20th of sept.
My biggest recommendations for big finish would be everything robert shearman has written. With the exception of the maltese penguin (which is still really good) all of his stuff is among my favorite dr who ever.

Definitely recommend checking out the Big Finish story Live 34. It's this incredible semi-dystopian story that really makes the most of the audio format. It's based around a Radio Show and the story unfolds through that format. It's also VERY brutal and very unpredictable. Check it out, I think it will be your cup of tea.

As a massive fan of Big Finish, I recommend watching Stubagful's guide for good starting points, but for my personal recommendations, I would suggest Spare Parts, Jubilee, Storm Warning, Master, The Chimes of Midnight, The Holy Terror and I, Davros (and also the two stand alone releases Davros and The Davros Mission). There are also Big Finishes that aren't like these, such as Doctor Who Unbound. If you listen to that series, listen to Deadline.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't think this audio was all that great. I mean sure, there was nothing wrong with it, but I feel like a lot of the hype might have been that it featured the Mondasian Cybermen.
But seeing as I listened to this after World Enough & Time aired, I like that in my review, I didn't really think about angle was all that special really.

Spare Parts is amazing, but does have its flaws, and I think there are better ones. I'm sure someone has already recommended this BUT The Chimes of Midnight is generally regarded as the BEST Big Finish story. It would benefit from having listened to Storm Warning and MAYBE Sword of Orion, but my first listen of it didn't really suffer from my lack of knowledge of the 8th Doctor's companion at the time: Charlie Pollard. I haven't exactly bothered to rank my favorite Big Finish stories but some of my favorites include: Terror Firma, Jubilee, Master, Warzone/Conversion, and Creatures of Beauty. If you're into really dark shit, I can't recommend Master enough, seriously, I was shook after listening to the Master talking about smashing a newborn child.

The scale of the stories and the amazing writing is so good. Honestly most of big finish is better than classic who and moffats and chibnalls who. The stuff with david tennant is very good as is all of the modern who stuff even characters i didnt like mucb such as river and missy are so much better in big finish. However the doctor who is best on big finish is paul mcgann id definitley reccomend his first "season" from storm warning to zagreus you dont need any context, not even the movie its like a fresh start and includes some of the best doctor who stories ever made

A LOT of people praise this story -- but I've felt it was always a bit overrated. Like, it's not TERRIBLE; but there's WAY BETTER Big Finish stories out there.
