This is a timely discussion for me. I was recently diagnosed with Hemochromatosis (Ferritin near 600) and am convinced it was a primary cause of my atherosclerosis (age 64). My father had Hemochromatosis too, I should have paid more attention to his warnings. I have had a number of phlebotomy sessions and my Ferritin is down to 250 now, many weird symptoms have disappeared too.
Me,and my brother also have hereditary hemochromatosis,we found it out accidentally. My hemochromatoses is considered "borderline,I never had any symptoms. My brother's ferritin levels was much higher due to being a man. We both donate blood regularly. My brother has just turned 84 and is quite healthy ,and active regardless of his hemochromatos. He also does not have any joint issues. I suppose my parents were carriers. Neither of my sons inherited this .
I a!so have hemochromatosis. I monitor my ferritin level which was originally around 1500 in my early 50s. I try to keep my ferritin level below 50. in my 70s it seems I only need phlebotomy once a year. My question is what is the ideal ferritin number? Mine has been as low as 19.
Is ferritin really a marker of inflammation? I eat mostly plant based with lots of beans and greens that contain iron, and my ferritin has gone up to 177. So that is relatively high, and yet my CRP is usually 0.4 to 0.6. My testosterone is 455 at 51 years old. So what I wonder is, is it ok to have a ferritin of 150 or so as long as one is able keep oxidative stress low. Wouldn't that keep a higher oxygen transport by the blood? I took apo-lactoferrin to chelate the iron and my ferritin went down to 75, but I wonder if it is a good thing or not. Wouldn't that reduce the oxygen transport by the blood?
Very informative, but Dr should have discussed those 5 levels of Hemochromatosis......n few other points to ponder for those wanna know more about this condition
Black Licorice is high in Iron & was in Egyptian Tombs as a needed Nutrient. Black Licorice is a great way to boost the immune system & how that is, is quite interesting & un-known to me.
Great discussion! Do you know if there are any discussions or research on ferretin and progesterone? I'm female and have been feeling terrible for quite a while. It coincides with taking progesterone and I have not been menstruating. Found out a few days ago that ferretin is just under 400 and the doc was quite dismissive and not considering it as an inflammation marker.
Thanks for this, it’s very timely for me. Been on trt for 4 years now and ferritin has gone from 130 to 350 in that time. Iron is sometimes 150, sometimes 250 and the highest I saw was 296. I test those and other biomarkers about every 3 months. Have never donated. So, as a rule of thumb, do you have recommendations for people in this situation? Btw I only eat red meat once a week and don’t take any iron supps
It's great to hear that you're keeping such a close eye on your biomarkers! For those in similar situations, consider discussing with your healthcare provider about dietary adjustments or potential donations to manage iron levels effectively.
My ferritin is 116 and my “former Dr” tried to tell me I had hemochromatosis. She wanted to talk about my “sleep apnea” which I do not have. She said - we’ll just say you have genetic hemochromatosis. I will not be going back to her.
Have haemotomatosis AND low haemoglobin! So when haemoglobin had been low, I have not been allowed to have a venesection. So I have to increase my iron levels to get my haemoglobin up in order to have a venesection which is only necessary ad I have iron overload!!
Great video. I have exactly this. I have heamochromatosis and secondary hypogonadism. Iv literally just started on TRT with the leger clinic. I have also used robin iron checker using my ancestral data.
Dear Mr. Jewsbury, after having your DNA profile with My Ansesters where/ what medical institution did you send it to to find out about the problematic genes? You said it, but I am sorry not to catch it correctely. Thank you in advance.😊
You can have high ferritin levels without having oxidative stress. If your high sensitivity CRP is not elevated, the amount of ferritin is not causing oxidative stress.

So what is the solution and treatment?

Robin's RUclips channel is called "Aging, Inflammation and Iron Overload"

is there a link between SHBG and elevated Ferritin

Thanks this was very informative and helpful to me while on my journey of TRT
I'm glad you found it informative! Best of luck on your TRT journey!
I have a ferritin around 400, Im on TRT as well. Ive recently tested negative for all chematomacrosis related genes
congratulations to both of you
Thank you so much! We appreciate your support and kind words!
my Ferritin level is very low on TRT, i never donate blood, what should i do? thanks
Make sure the lab is HIPAA compliant.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's great to hear that you're taking proactive steps with TRT. Wishing you the best on your health journey!
an extraordinary colleague
Thx ,is best video🙏
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Your support means a lot to me!
Aging is about loosing Telomerase activity?!?
What about us girls? Is there a link to sluggish thyroid (?) My ferritin level was 170 last year and 220 now…

Thanks for taking the time to talk about the topic in detail!
I’m glad you found the discussion helpful! I love diving deep into these topics.
iron related to higher mortality
Just found out today that my ferritin is 546
Wow, that's quite a ferritin level! It's important to keep an eye on those numbers. Have you talked to your doctor about it?
@balancemyhormones not yet, it could also be from a iron supplement I was taking
Thanks. Robin looks anaemic.
You're welcome!
U should have yr ferritin and transferin checked....never get only one checked.
