Well back in the day, (the 80s), it wasn’t really categorised as dance music, more Soul, Funk, Electro. But Paul’s early stuff First Light then solo is pure brilliance!!!!🥇🥇🥇🥇
The majority of Pauls' stuff has all been in 4/4 time, which is no different than todays so called DJ/ Producers, difference being the programming of the drums to avoid the 4 on the floor 4 kick drum and the endlessly boring ticka-tsss ticka-tsss ticka-tsss tick-tsss hi hat and creating original musical content and arrangement or orchestration that embellishes the drum pattern. Pauls early drum patterns and use of two drum machines to utilise different snares or samples was really good and whilst being 4/4 ( like most songs on the radio, not just dance stuff) such as Rainforest, it was the time he took to create patterns and fills and then put remarkable melodies and synths on top that lifted it from a four on the floor track to much much more. He's right, Chris Stussi et al have their place, good luck to them, but as for musicality, arrangement, composition, originality and sheer memorability, all modern DJ/ producers will never come close to what has gone before because it demands more than a Pioneer so-called turntable, rekordbox and a few totally fake twist and fades on a deck that is doing almost everything for them with someone else's music. Paul is right to comment on the ubiquitous nature of what now passes for 'dance' music. Keep it going Paul. We love ya!

The thing about one of your most famous tracks is that it was also somewhat a history lesson about the Vietnam war for many on the dance floor. That was genius
Ultimately I think what you’re conveying is that your heart isn’t in it anymore. Because, it’s very easy to throw a beat down and jam a few bits over it … yes. But, to have it stand out and speak to people on a deeper level, your heart needs to be in it. It needs to have something a bit special that catches the ear, the choice of bass against the kick, the right chords, the right sample, things that happen when you don’t expect them etc, the way the groove swings a little unexpectedly. That’s my thoughts anyway. Much respect to you though Paul! I remember having a talking alarm clock in the 80s that I’d set to the number 19 and continuing press the talk button mimicking your song 👌

No, it is fairly easy as long as you are somewhat musical. Come on. Please. And Paul of course had some "memories" to draw on. I am a guitarist in the first place. But I play the bass and the keys to my music and I programm the drums. You feel or you know what sounds good. Look how Paul recorded the bass and afterwards the "club sounding noises". Simplest music theory. Very similar to the bassline, just a few notes higher. You can give him, or even me, a recorder/flute or any other instrument and within a few minutes we can at least play a simple but musically sounding melody on it. And writing music is theory. Following a pattern. It has nothing to do with being a genius. It's just easier and faster if you already are familiar with it.
@@mantelmann13In my opinion, this mindset is why certain club/dance songs fall short. I think theres a big difference between a track simply having all of the elements and motifs of a dance track and a track that actually makes people want to get up and dance.

HI As I have has so many replies, I will just do something the same but show how it can be made more interesting by not sticking to that same beat I have heard more than anything else
It is exactly that what makes it boring you don't get it.....a broken beat is and can be much more complex and enjoying for the mind to follow, the moment I hear 4 to the floor beat at a drum and bass rave it just ruins it, total trash.
@@jasong9695 It could be that you don't understand. Context is everything. If you hear a beat at a techno rave that's not 4-on-the-floor, it ruins everything. Maybe it's even a 4-on-the-floor beat, but it has too much swing, so you get “house” and that ruins the vibe. Boring' is preferred, but I'd rather call it 'hypnotic' or something. The mind then picks up other details than massively irregular beats.

yeah i only just stumbled on this and I hear your thoughts on this however its a great and valid expression of ideas putting together an optimistic sounding fresh track using the "tricks" and approaches many use but as always your own style and thought process is what makes it that touch of differrence and an inspiring track for people to dance to and forget their troubles and be taken to another place is a good thing despite your concerns that its too trite or simplistic - thats not how others see it as they get lost in the vibe and sonic pleasures
The thing about dance music is that it's fun and simple. That being said, try making a full dance tune with good sound editing, compression, mastering, etc and a little soul...you must admit, there is an art to it.
Mr. Hardcastle, for you is so easy, for us the listeners, of the 80's and 90's you are a breath of oxigene. Is the first time when I am in your channel, I gonna send the link to all my friends! I am sure all are love to hear again your music. I hope!
Hi Paul, i found your video interesting...i'm a huge fan of dance music, as a chronic pain sufferer, i find dance music as my 'Happy Music' but saying that, it must have rhythm and a good sound. The repetitive stuff, yes, not a big fan but with the black dog (depression) hiding around every corner, i find dance music puts me in a good mood and keeps me going.. I wish more 80s artists would write happy dance tracks that make us feel good... it really does help.. cheers, Michael @ Electronic80s / Soundz80s
You’ve proved that you can knock out a mediocre, derivative dance track in an hour. To be fair, most half decent composers or producers could do this in any genre - I spent an hour doing a string quartet arrangement after watching an instructional RUclips video. To make an original, groundbreaking dance track takes skill, vision etc etc just like any other genre.
For him he’s made enough he’s got bored with the structure and struggles to get inspired by the process. He’s moved on to other things, it doesn’t mean the art form is dead, you right it takes work to make something good and the medium still has the potential. It’s a little harder to be innovative requires taking some creative approaches, not just drag and drop loops and build up tropes.
Yes Paul! As someone who taught himself how to manually cut up old classic funk breaks in his teens, I TOTALLY get where you're coming from. Thankfully Steph and Jimi are still promoting your work in 2024
The Legend! I wanted a Korg Trinity SO bad when I was a youngster. Now I play a Korg Triton sometimes at hockey games which is pretty old and crusty. My how times have changed. But part of the reason the Trinity was so cool to me wasn't just the futuristic look but the fact that you, LTJ Bukem and so many others made REALLY good use of them. Glad to see you're still using it - the old Korg key beds are fantastic. Still using my O1/W as a controller, still prefer it over a modern pizza box keyboard!
This video came up and i clicked on it and started watching not looking at the name, just the title. After a bit I realized who i was watching! Wow, your music was such a inspiration to me back in the 80's and definitely an influence. Amazing to just discover your channel now.
I love the fact that you're a fan of The Prodigy Paul, and I have to agree with the other people who don't associate your music with 4/4 house at all, to me it was defined by grooves no matter what tempo. Especially Don't Waste My Time, incredibly fresh groove, with one of the most iconic TOTP appearances ever!
Yeah its not bad. Sounds like a late 80's house tune. It wouldn't sell now though rightly or wrongly. There is well thought out and intricate Dance music coming out (especially underground Stuff} that didn't take ten minutes to make so i'd be careful of being too dismissive of what other people do. I Feel Love was the first real House track as far as i'm concerned and still holds up and sounds Futuristic now.
you had a smile on your face the entire time you were making the beats mr. H.
Funny thing is.. his dislike of 4 to the floor makes him an excellent pioneer of 'new' sounding dance music.
you might find it uninteresting, but i can't deny i had the impression you enjoyed making that!

Tooo amazing sir!!!!! I’ve been dancing to your stuff for a very long time! Thank you for sharing!!!!
It's not the 4 on the floor that is boring. It's the lack of ideas and creativity that is boring!
Bro your a goat man I just found your music today wtf?!!!! I wish I could meet you man you're a legend just know that my g!!!
Thank you, Paul. You should make whatever makes you and your supporters happy. Blessings to you.
Greetings from Greece Mr Paul Hardcastle ! I love your song's !!!
Great video paul. A big fan of your excellent music & production work since the 80’s. Thanks for all your music 😊
Just found this but thanks for the chill mix tip you’ve done I’ll give that a listen on holiday few weeks time 👍
Making it looks so easy when it actually isn’t.
That’s the talent right there.
Yeap we want dance music lol and also Paul I would Loveeee another Jazz masters album 😩🙏🏽
You were loving that, especially putting in the bassline - which was pretty killer!
great super star of jazz international... congrat.
This is essentially a master class
Legend. Genius. Gentleman. Maximum respect to you Paul!
Paul Love Everything You Put Out You Put A New Spin On Jazz It Pulled Me In Thank You Brother GBU And Family Mom May Be Gone But Not Forgotten ( Hit Me Brother Lost My Mom And Dad ) 🙏 ❤ 🇺🇸
yeah i only just stumbled on this and I hear your thoughts on this however its a great and valid expression of ideas putting together an optimistic sounding fresh track using the "tricks" and approaches many use but as always your own style and thought process is what makes it that touch of differrence and an inspiring track for people to dance to and forget their troubles and be taken to another place is a good thing despite your concerns that its too trite or simplistic - thats not how others see it as they get lost in the vibe and sonic pleasures
His music is still amazing even today i love his music and he was way before my time
I really enjoyed that. Clearly a very talented musician.
I'm looking at a bloke actually having the time of his life right here ! I loved it ! 😄
7:06 wow, that is great! I wanna hear a song of just that haha
This reminds of that BBC interview you done back in the 80's and you said something similar.
"I don't make dance music because other people's dance music is boring."
He should be saying; "Lemme show these young cats how it's done!"
then bring out a new dance track with his son and hit uk #1.
you are the best Paul, so much love from Brazil! you are the best.
The thing about dance music is that it's fun and simple. That being said, try making a full dance tune with good sound editing, compression, mastering, etc and a little soul...you must admit, there is an art to it.
Such a genius and inspiring musician!
Is that Omnisphere I spot with my little eye? It's a great synth!
Looks like a Kong Triton to me.
Paul hardcatle album was an iconic part of my youth , your music was far ahead of it’s time back in the days especially on TOTPS
Well yes kind of answers it Paul, thank you. And also for 19 and the incredible lyrics, a real icon.
You don’t need to do any dance music Paul. Your music is amazing as is!! ❤️🌺❤️🌺
When you get to our age you’ve heard it all. 70s and 80s music was the best time for dance music.
I've never heard him speak before. What a lovely charming down to earth man
