Poor woman had her book published, went on Roland's show, made all kinds of assertions, but couldn't see the forest for the trees. Perhaps she should have had 'this conversation' while she was still in the writing phase.. Ah, well, there's always 'revised editions' [some of them simply love revisionism].
Batya is a good example of a lot of white people. They take everything at surface level. Also, they think everything begins with white people. They think the only people with perspectives are white people. Everything she mentioned that she thought started with white "liberals/progressives" actually started with Black people. She also learned that it's not about the label, it's about the substance (i.e police reform vs. Defund the Police). Even though Roland dropped some gems, Batya will still continue to espouse the same rhetoric, because she's programmed and paid to do that and not to become enlightened.
Like Roland said, she's on Fox News by design. Her down talking progressives, democrats, "woke" speak, and saying the issues is not racism, is the reason they keep asking her back.
I see her as problematic because how she positioned her title. Use another word because what she is doing is being apart of the ongoing White Supremacists problem. She says that liberals dumb down to talk to black people indicating that dumbing down is condescending to Black people because of stereotypes that we’re unintelligent. She should have focused her attention to the gas lighting that white elites and politicians do to white people no matter the white person’s class. She’s trying to align herself with caring about Black people by doing the same thing she’s accusing white liberals, who to Roland’s point who her perspective is so narrow. It’s projection.
Oh please try comparing a Don Lemon, Joy Reid to a Harris Faulkner and Lawrence Jones or Leo Terrell… it’s clear who the grifters are who are standing on the backs of the lower class
People like her annoy the hell out of me. They wanna tell us what the problem is and act like they want the black opinion on the subject matter. Then when we give them the answer they dont accept it. How is she gonna tell us how we are supposed to feel when we go for a job and out rank all the applicants and still dont get the job. I dont care if its because the employee is racist, biased, or they give the job to their nephew with no experience. All of those are unequal treatments.!!!
This discussion is the best thing I have heard all year. I really enjoyed the insight from Roland, and Batya Ungar-Sargon listening. I especially enjoyed Roland breaking down how the media tries to control the narrative in relationship to defund the Police which reinforces, how the right and mainstream media try to gaslight what dissent law abiding people mean by defund the Police
My guess is her take away might be that youre defending whitey. I hope she knows you because she would know thats not something you do. Because we all live in a society together. We walk the same land together. We breathe the same air. We are brothers and sisters that act like we are so different, when in reality, we’re very much alike. Just because you’re black and I’m white, doesn’t mean I don’t know how you feel in a situation and acting like two skin colors makes us extremely different is really silly, for lack of better words. I thought black people wanted out of segregation. I know for a fact that whites don’t want segregation in this country again. So why do blacks segregate every chance they get? With comments like you just made, you prove my point. Acting like white people don’t know how it feels to be “in your skin” is mental segregation at least. Yes, I know how you feel just like you know how I feel. Disrespect is disrespect. We’ve got to stop acting like we are so different. We are AMERICANS. Not African American, not European American, just American. That is, unless you were literally born in Africa or Europe. But either way, we are all here together forever and shouldn’t we be making the best of it? Native Indians, Whites, and Blacks should be united together and standing against the infiltration of illegal immigrants right now! We should be fighting side by side to protect our future. Her unwillingness to just except Roland’s point is exactly his point. White people have a hard time seeing themselves for who they really are. She did exactly what the people Roland was talking about does. Looked at it from her Narrow point of view, and refused to see any other way.
Roland, I think its odd that a "White" woman is trying to determine what is, racist idealisms vs non-racist idealisms, when she herself has never experienced what racism really feels like, when she's a "White" woman.
It was mentioned that she's Jewish. So it would be interesting if the "woke media" narrative would apply to the coverage of the Israeli-Palestinians conflict.

@adams92g. I would add to your own correct assessment: also a perfect example of how Racism/White Supremacy is maintained & refined daily. By diversion & distraction, by argument & conflict. INSTEAD of correctly defining real problems & solving them. People who always want to “help” presidents, police, cavalries & fully-fledged entities are just astounding to me in both hubris & malignant narcissism! Always so assured that when these agents & catalysts run out of targets-& they always do-the very next to BE targeted won’t be themselves!
@michaelmerrill. Currently, it’s just a racial slur. Originally, when the term was coined long ago, it pretended to street-savvy or to conscientious awareness in enhanced-learning applications. But used by persons who classify themselves “White,” it’s just another anti-Black assessment of people classified Black who don’t necessarily agree with White persons themselves on something; just as slaves or other subordinate persons would be & were actually (traditionally) required & expected to do in “conversation.”
I don't think that she has a blindspot at all, but rather trying to push a consistent curated Rightwings talking-point. The same people will say that "the Klan were started by democrats", true but will also ignore the fact that a democrat, Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Bill, which in-turn created a Rightwing defection of today's Republican Party. Everytime, Roland lays-out a point, she comes back again to..."to me..." (meaning, in my Rightwing opinion...) She's not really interested in progress, but to push an Agenda, as you can see she continued on to get their talking-points.
Right and it's not Democrats who are rolling back civil rights protections, it's the Republicans doing that I know Trump did it in his administration. So, white conservatives can miss me with that "Democrats are the party of KKK" bs.
She is very much a (classical) leftist. And you may want to look further into LBJ…. Actually a more productive exercise would be to look at the voting records of left v right on race.
There is a town, I believe it was in Texas, not sure, that did the defund the police idea and hired the right people for issues that should not involve police, like mental problems, arguments. It worked amazing and saved lives, and the people who went on the calls were more helpful and the police were able to focus on real crimes. IT WAS A GREAT THING FOR THE POLICE! Why are we not bringing more attention to this. Roland is CORRECT on what Defund the police means. Republicans took the terminology and made it negative for their own agenda.
Personally, ( and I'm a black Jamaican who's lived in both NYC and Miami) I would agree with Batya that liberals tend to want to influence you to agree with their point of view while conservatives will explain the problem AS THEY PERCEIVE IT,and persuade you to agree with it; all the time, however both have very different views... I perceive conservatives - my opinion- as more forthcoming with how they feel about us and how they think our racial interaction should play out while liberals are more forceful in their interaction; they'll ( liberals) be quicker to feel comfort in saying the word " ni**a" in your company while a conservative will not ever utter the word ( in our company!).... they both have their prejudices ( and some on both sides might be traditional racists ) but most conservatives will respect your stance and approach you with mutual respect- nowadays anyway- but liberals want you to exist in a racial world based on how they -liberals- want it to be, not how black people want it to be.
This conversation was so helpful, clarifying what was bothering me and affirming what I need to change in myself first. I was reflecting on this earlier today, that it's not enough for me to listen as I have for a decade. I also need to change my automatic actions, and I'm finally in a place in my life where I have better tools to do that. Solidarity!
Within yourself, See how long that change will last... People will have you change it without you noticing it changing... People are very manipulative... Pay attention to your own actions at all times...
Roland you a truly incredible I love you so much. How ironic is it that she was literally patronizing Roland throughout the interview and not listening to him and acting like a so-called “woke” liberal. ITS NOT A WOKE THING ITS A WHITE THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think y'all are missing the point. Roland is turning it into a debate. He's defending progressivism. She's 100% right of how white politicians are doing and how they really see black people. That's why Bill Clinton was really respected by the black people because he tried to do everything he promised unlike other democrats before him with exception of Jimmy Carter. They are speaking about the same thing.
Yeah, that was crazy when she talked about can't find qualified Black people, like there aren't TONS of unqualified white people working in these spaces. When you want to look for Black talent, you go to where the Black talent is. You don't wait for them to come to you.
They want to tell us what it our words mean. This is how they spread this garage around the diner table or on the back porch and it's usually the one that sounds most intelligent
If you notice a lot of conservatives always want to add the word "woke" to whatever they do for specific reason. It's the buzzword that increase engagement with their base.
Her saying she is invited on Fox all the time says she is feeding the racist problem. Fox will never put you on if you promote liberal thought, it is a conservative media source. That is why she is on there. Conservative means pro white so she is promoting white views. She actually tried to tell him that the white conservatives and liberal relate to him in different ways and couldn't accept it when he said based on his experience they have the exact same attitudes.
She’s more a part of the problem than she knows. Why didn’t she come to black folks and ask or get understanding before writing that book. Or better yet, why not teach out of the books that we’ve already written. We need them to stop taking this easy route of less resistance and actually use their privilege to break down the system from the inside. She is going to make money on a book that is useless to us.
I like how Roland just ripped apart the flawed premise of the book. She spoke about how wippo talk down to black folk, and she talks down to Roland. He was not having any of it. He basically said “you may have a PhD, but you’re stupid.” She came unprepared, her book was flawed and unprepared, and she did the same things during this interview that she critiques the wyte liberals of doing. She should be embarrassed.
Funny because that word isn't the only thing they have appropriated from us. It's like they have no identity of their own other than what they appropriate from other cultures.
Our definition of woke was never to define something bad. It’s always been a verbal fist bump of encouragement to stay strong & enlightened in the midst of this crazy place called America.

she is not an ally. she is weaponizing the oppression and lived experience of Black people specifically for partisan political reasons, namely for the benefit of republicans. She is a rabble rouser and nothing more.
Roland said it. Terminology needs to be defined in terms of what you mean by that. When I hear the words "police reform," I interpret that as wishy washy policy that will have no real positive effect, and police departments will continue using tax dollars to brutalize and kill anyone who isn't WCHMC. As white people, defining what you mean by woke is similar to defining what you mean by the term-God, Goddess, Spirit-when writing a spiritual or religious book. The word God puts off a group of people who associate it with their bad experiences with religion or the bad social and political actions perpetrated by religion over the millennia. People also ask what you mean by the term Spirit when used to describe a higher power.

She says that liberals dumb down to talk to black people indicating that dumbing down is condescending to Black people because of stereotypes that we’re unintelligent. She should have focused her attention to the gas lighting that white elites and politicians do to white people no matter the white person’s class. Weirdos
Not pushing each other away.
Hope you take this message with an open mind and not a racist mind because I’m trying to have open dialogue. That’s all.

Your misusing the term woke, it has been hijacked by the white right for a bad purpose.

I appreciate seeing us comment and discuss something other than bs gossip. Roland Martin has always been for black intelligence, my momma God rest her soul put me on to him when I was a boy. Now as a man with a business, a 19 year marriage and 3 kids. I'm still right here. Love y'all ❤️👊🏿💯
Very healthy conversation
Please teach Roland!!!
Look at her stance Roland is running circles around this lady. His experience alone is just undeniable
Did she just have a discussion with a black man arguing what Is and isn't racist in HIS experience
NOT only that - she also is NOT old enough to HAVE SEEN or EXPERIENCED ENOUGH
But remember, she's the enlightened white liberal. Its the other ones who are condescending to black people 😂
While one might say she's an ally, her understanding of how a particular outcome is decided still persist as warped. She doesn't really want to see her book as wasted statistics. Her book is foulable and has too many perceived thought perceptions. She's gonna go back and check real data. She's not totally a loss. Roland is a great teacher and orator.
She should have talked to Roland and many other Black folk in media BEFORE she wrote the book. Statistics can always be skewed by the perspective of the person deciphering them. She should have gotten the REAL story. Isn’t that the #1 remit of journalism?
she is not an ally. she is weaponizing the oppression and lived experience of Black people specifically for partisan political reasons, namely for the benefit of republicans. She is a rabble rouser and nothing more.
Nope! She's now on The Hill's Rising Show opposite Brianna Joy Gray giving the Right Wing perspective. Hardly an ally.
Roland, you are a national treasure. Thanks for educating that narrow minded young now it all!
Set the record straight Roland 🔥
She seems almost clueless in the conversation. WOW !!!! She wrote a book on wokeness.
I watched Mrs Ungar-Sargon in a conversational debate with BadFaith and I witnessed the same wheel pin. We need these debates but right now right now wealthy families are killing are planet, arming everyone, painting targets on us while they safely watch the fireworks in their yachts. Like they always have.
If they only knew..👍👍👍👍👍
Yep…that real talk for sure…same at it ever was..🤨
Really? I enjoyed that conversation between her and Briahna. She made valid points that social issues alienate working class people who actually agree with Briahna on economic populism
let the church say "Amen"
Never mind, you are 100% correct
I believe she has a good heart and really cares and wants change. Her idealistic views are clouded by what she repeatedly said," she feels"like her passion and interest just need more dialogue. Great job breaking it down Roland
The guy is very emotional 😂
He need to grow up and have some thick skin
She does make some good points
