- Alfa Romeo's NEW Giulia Competizione sits atop its saloon range for 2023 - and we've been driving it on UK roads. At over £52k, it's pricier and less tech-laden than the latest BMW 3 Series. But this new Alfa has a few tricks up its sleeve. As Sam finds out...

Just to remind the general public Alfa Romeo is the creator and inventor of the sports saloon! The original the authentic and always the best!
I like the fact that Alfa have evolved the car throughout its life cycle rather than ruin the look with a clumsy facelift.
Just in case the general public forgot Alfa Romeo is the inventor and creator of the sports sedan! the authentic, the original and the best! that will never change!
What a gorgeous piece of Italian engineering, absolutely a work of art.
I've owned an Alfa Romeo Giulia since 2018 best car I've ever owned! Zero faults! and more reliable no issues compared to the Korean or Japanese cars I've owned before! strange but true! As long as you have annual authorized Alfa Romeo servicing at regular intervals you're fine! Don't listen to the negative jealous comments media etc... buy one and make up your own mind the car will surprise you and exceed your expectations!
It might be silly but it makes me happy to see and read how much this car (that i love but dont own) is appreciated throughout the world. Thanks for loving alfa romeo cars.
Great review. Couldn't agree more with all of your conclusions. The Giulia is the sexiest car in it's class. And it's so much fun to drive. The 2023 update just added things I do not need to enjoy the ride. Consequently, I just bought one of the remaining 2022 Veloces available at Afla dealers and saved some 15 k€ :-)
Good decision. 2022 looks better
Enjoy your rides with the lovely veloce ❤
It's an amazing car and it's clearly targeted towards people who love to drive and feel connected to the experience and don't really care about the latest and greatest tech features or luxury. I got my Giulia last year and couldn't be happier with it. In fact I actually prefer the "simpler" interiour with more old school approach to center console and buttons, keeps me focused on the road without any distractions. Great little review guys.
By the way, the base model with 200hp 2.0l is equally as capable and costs way less than Competizione.
I thank god Alfa kept most actual physical switches on the wheel and for the clima control, it gives in my opinion far better feedback and especially the clima is far easier and less distracting that using a damn tablet stuck without taste on the central console
It's a blast from the past, though still a beautiful, driver's car.
Well said, Paul!
Italians just have the touch the syling is divine a david in automotive design
This car really needs a 3rd engine choice in the US. The 2L just doesn't have enough get up and go, while the Quadrafolio isn't very practical. Something that rivals the M40i would be perfect. Something in the 350hp-380hp range.
True
Mercedes' hyperscreen offers a screen size of 56 inches, one inch larger than the Cadillac Celestiq and eight inches larger than the Lincoln Nautilus. Others worth mentioning include the Cadillac Escalade (38 inches), Lucid Air (34 inches) and Buick LaCrosse (30 inches). Alfa Romeo has different priorities because internal research has shown that customers don't really want huge screens that stretch from one corner of the dashboard to the other.
Speaking to Autocar, the Italian carmaker's boss, Jean-Philippe Imparato, said that future models would not get massive screens: "Of course, I respect what Mercedes is doing with its digital technology, but my customers are not looking for one-meter-wide infotainment screens or 200 digital on-off assistance systems." He went on to say that the typical Alfa customer doesn't want to know what the weather will be like in three weeks because they just want to drive the car.
This looks like what’s called a Ti Sport in the U.S. Had one and it’s got the sweetest most balanced chassis. And the sports seats are brilliant. Also it doesn’t have an ugly tablet stuck on the top of the dash, but rather the screen is integrated into the dash very stylishly.
I think the Cmpetizione goes a little sportier on some things but it's pretty close, cause in Italy there is still both the TI and Competizione trims
@@XMarkxyznothing sportier. Absolutely tge same car performance wise. Shouldn't be called competizione.
yup, pretty much a Ti Sport. But this is more so the “Estrema” that we get in the US. Was called “Ti Sport” then changed to “Veloce” etc in 2022 to follow in line with the rest of the world.
Best mid-size sedan in the world, ALFA plays in its own league.🔥
Piece of art, it looks perfectly sexy and it's fast. Alfa Romeo
This would be so nice with a manual transmission, analog dials, and without all those hideous screens.
What people forget is that handeling is important why it safed my life. And yes this was an Alfa Romeo it was on the German Autobahn my Alfa made it the VW Passat behind me not! Today yes i still drive Alfa Romeo.
Really, who cares about the camera. She is gorgeous and drives accordingly.
absolutely agree
when i have enough money ,i'm buying this car , enough with the wallpapers !
Reminds me of the 156 I had many years ago. Loved that car.
The 156 ❤️ was the summit of their design and beauty in my opinion. Nothing mixed elegance and sportiness better than the 156, it's never copied Germans in any aspect as well. Even this Giulia (while brilliant) can't even come close.
Great review and awesome sportsedan👌🥇🏆🍀🇮🇹🔥
First time here; absolutely love your review.
It hits all the meaningful buttons (pun unintended) that driving enthusiast like me look for in a sporty daily driver.
Like, subscribed.
After watching all the Giulia/Stelvio reviews, you've finally convinced me.
I'm seriously going to get this with one caveat: still holding my breath that Stellantis will bring it to where I live.
Beautiful. BMW’s are everywhere, Alfas have a degree of exclusivity.
Two years ago i sold my c class for a Giulia. Its is the best car, i hope i can keep it many years.
A couple of years ago, I made the same kind of choice.
The Giulia, and in my case the Stelvio are some of the last vehicles being made with excellent balance, superior dynamics and drive pleasure in mind. The simple fact that I’m including a SUV in this phrase is unbelievable!
Moon grey - beautiful colour
True, because Giulia and Stelvio are built on the same platform, platform "giorgio" (if i remember the name right)
Part of the Fiat group. Ferrari tech involved with this car. The Quadrifoglio is the best. This one is very, VERY nice though. Look forward to Ferrari’s new 4 door saloon!
This car needs a better engine. A NA version of the V6 in the QF would have been the ticket. Something that can put out around 325-350hp. A NA Chevy Camaro V6 puts out 335hp.
A remap sees 325 reliably, and if you map the ZF8 too you're looking at about 5.0sec to 60. Food for thought...
Strap a 2.0t on a dyno there over 300 hp
@@jordanbaxter7807 Yeah, but how long will it last? I buy cars for the long term. Lower stressed NA engines are better for that.
@@norwegianblue2017 I've stuck nearly 40k on mine since the remaps, and it's needed nothing outside of routine servicing. General consensus is that the 2.0T is good for up to 330hp~ while retaining reliability.
Give me the Alfa everyday
I really fancy one of these but strong residuals mean even early ones are currently out of reach....absolutely gorgeous looking thing and perfect antidote to the ubiquitous German competition - and that's coming from a BMW 3 series driver !!
Alfa all the way but here in Portugal even the Veloce with some needed extras will set you back €75.000.00
Brilliant !!
The Giulia is definitely the best looking and possibly the most desirable saloon money can buy 😄. I would actually pick one over some of the more obvious choices in this segment. Another great review :)
Thanks, Nathan! We know Sam agrees. It's a heart over head scenario
@@cinch No problem and pretty much 😄
I bought one. Got the Veloce 2019 MY. Superb car. Test drove an S4 and 340i and a c43. All the Germans were just a bit boring in terms of driving quality. And the Germans aren't built like they used to be so reliability wasn't an issue. Would make the same decision again.
Cannot agree more. The Giulia is by far the most beautiful saloon on the market and the driving experience is fantastic.
@@sx200n1 Don’t be so silly the 340i is the no brainer winner this is a good alternative but it's not more fun than a 340i. 4pot with 200 or 280 hp no chance.
It's an alfa romeo and it's from a marque with racing history since 1910 and the giulia like all alfa,s is sublime better than any German garbage.
Finally a site that tells it like it should, enough monopolizing certain brands, even though they’re not the best!
I have a Giulietta at the moment, would love to replace it with a Giulia one day.
If you're a lover of those classic, beautiful e46/e39 BMWs - you won't fill that void by getting a modern BMW, so get one of these instead!
Nice stuff from Alfa Romeo!
Great video. Alfa Romeos are great cars but for the last 30 years, lost to BMWs. With its current range and the increased quality and dynamics (all BMWs look same for each generation), the next 30 years could be Alfa's new era! They are mini Ferraris.
Thanks, Steve 😆 We have our 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifolio video coming out early next week!
Let’s hope people buy it so we can get it second hand for cheap in about 10 years lol
don't care about the interior. In a week or 2 you get used and bored to even more ''beautifu'' and sophisticated interior. How it drives and how it handles around the corners is what I care for and it seems that this car does perform in excellent way.
Proper driver's car. Magical to drive. Great alternative to anything German. It won't be a taxi in 10 years time! Hee...
Well said
Nice. I like!
Because Alfa has soul ❤️🇮🇹🌟
TK🇳🇴
You can say that again
Very underrated this is a beautiful car Alfa has done great ❤
They really have! :)
Beautiful car. In this colour it's desperate for a glass panoramic sunroof.
Oh yeah!
Red colour is pretty bro
Beautiful livery. Looks like ivory ot pearl, not just white.
It looks so good in the metal. Different without being ostentatious, for those who are inclined towards that aesthetic.
/Jamil
Love my Alfa, it's a blast to drive, and the efficiency mode helps with fuel economy.
Every Alfa I've personally owned was a manual. My 164 Twin Spark, 164 3.0 Lusso and the 159 TBi.
Why we don't get this in QV manual spec in the UK makes zero sense to me. Alfa is becoming the Italian BMW and this is not a compliment.
The ZF 8 speed automatic is so much better than the 6 speed manual ... and then you have those marvellous aluminum shifting paddles.
@@itaholic902 I'll take a great open gate manual over any paddle shift auto every time. Much more involving.
Agree❤
Do not ask for subscriptions. People will do it by themselves if they like the contents AT THE END.
Alfa Romeo Giulia, slowly starting to become the next Nissan GT-R R35...
Do not like the tonale interior or the overstuffed technological interiors, will be sad when Alfa puts more tech in the Giulia and Stelvio.
Good car but twice as expensive as an 330i here in Norway :/ Easy choice then
Still beautiful outside, but the interior is not premium or luxurious with the material choices. I was hoping the interior would be better than a Dodge with this refresh, but they kept it the same.
Depends on what's important to you. I care about aesthetics and driving fun, so Alfa it is.
Dammit, can the US ever get the best cars in the Euro lineups?!
the best things about BMW are a market of parts for tuning, chip tuning, high liquidity on second-hand market, price does not go low after 1 year of ownership, well known engine service...
I wanted to buy Alfa, but it does not have wagon =((
The second hand price of bmw is a joke they drop like a house brick
In combi will be the killer
I was renting a car I'd try one. If I was making a long term investment in a car to buy it? Not a chance.
By using indicators you beat any BMW.
You said it damn right: only Alfa Romeo and Jaguar…
can you turn off DSC?
can you redline in manual?
is it faster that octavia RS 100-200km/h?
now tell me how this will beat BMW
I test drove 2021 Giulia 280hp, it looks great, but that's about it
❤
Well...top of the range would be the Quadrifoglio....
They don't dip the clutch. They have Cylinder Cut off when not under load. You'll see the rev counter drop to 0
That's even more impressive! Especially how smoothly it does it
Super nice and cool car to look at and to drive. Speaking of infotainment.... That sucks so much, super laggy, Freeze sometimes ... Camera is a 10 years old camera... If you want to sell it after 3 years, you loose so much money, i wouldn't recommend this car for these reasons
i would play safe and get an audi a5 45 tfsi...
Estara mas tiempo averiado que en carretera
So after all these years they could manage an aftermarket head and taillights. Awesome!
Alfa's greatest problem was the untimely death of the late great Sergio Marchionne. Alfa would not have produced the Giulia and Stelvio and would NEVER had made a re birth in the USA if it wasn't for Sergio. He created the Quadrifoglio to give a big MIDDLE FINGER to the Germans but now, under the umbrella of Stellantis, I fear that Alfa will yet once again become an orphan child. I will NEVER sell my custom ordered 2017 Giulia Quad and my 1964 Giulia Sprint GT. I own 2 great pieces of Alfa history...I fear they may become extinct...
You are so right. Sergio Marchionne is deeply missed, I Alfa, Ferrari, and Maserati too. He had ideas and plans for all of them even for Lancia.
I assume It has a personality compared to BMW for example.
I like everything about the car apart from the name. Calling it Competizione is completely undeserved and insulting. Something that germans do often, didn't expected that from an Alfa....
They ruined the headlights. It looks like a spider now. As if they were trying to say "BMW, you have 2 anegel eyes per headlight? Well guess what, we have 3!!!". Previous one looked so much better (front)
That's not why they did it. Look at old alfas. Most if not all of them always had 3 lights.
They need a station version of they want to attract customers from.the Germans. With it sadly it will fail again.
I love everything about it, apart from two things. It has a fairly generic 4 ylinder engine and it cannot be had in RHD with a manual.
Magical 4 cylinder designed by Ferrari 458s head tech, with 93 octane alone it’s over 300hp and a 4 second car from 5+
But it sounds boring, just like any other 4 cylinder.
@@simonh870 sounds good with a performance muffler!
I am not sure, a good sound is hard to achieve from a 4 cylinder engine.
Who cares about the interior? This is a car meant to be driven, not looked at.
And who's going to buy those cars when petrol cars are being phased out in the EU and companies investing such cars are being punished for doing so? Exactly, nobody except for those who can afford such a car.
People talk about buying an Alfa >>>>> people actually buying one
that's right ... but once you buy one you want to keep it for ever
No. Once italians do face lift always goes wrong. Dont like the new Lights.
Tous aiment l'Alfa Romeo mais a l'achat tous iront chez Bmw 🤔🤔
Italian cars are more reliable than German cars 😉
Shots fired!
No it’s not!
That would not be hard the new BMW ARE TERRIBLE LOOKING WITH THAT HORRIBLE BIG GRILL AND ENGINE PARTS BUILT IN CHINA I HAVE OWNED BMW SINCE THE MID 70s but when they introduced the new grill I went over to Mercedes AMG
It has too many doors.
I have both car, this one and BMW i4-50 - I think Alfa would be much better going electric
And I don't feel that way at all. I dread an Alfa EV. One things for sure - it'll be much heavier than today's car to accommodate those heavy battery packs.
way too overpriced for a base model engine, this trim is a cash grab
WOW OMG Stunning Beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulia 🇮🇹🚘🏆👑🌟🔝
Still terrible engine, 5500 max rpm? Bleh
Anyone that doesn’t own this is lucky
Because you know
Its a piece of junk. Look at that infotainment screen. It takes a minute to respond. BMW is top notch at every level.
lol another load of rubbish, the price will plummet and it will spend more time on the hard shoulder then on the road
Clearly never owned an alfa
@@iTzNitrOxZ several actually, the fashion is fleeting and price drop is HUGE , like all cars out of italy, like ferraris , the milage has to be low to sell one which means you cannot drive it however like alfas they breakdown more than they go
It's shit car😂
@@bobtudbury8505 wow, I thought I was an Alfa fan having only owned two (a Giulia and a Stelvio) but you have owned several so you must have really been a fanboy?
Was it after the third or fourth or fifth Alfa you owned that you came to the conclusion that the “price drop on each was huge” and “they breakdown more than they go”? I only ask as if you were anything less than a fan of the marque someone might be forgiven for remembering the saying, “fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me”.
BTW please don’t come back with the tired cliche that all the Alfas you owned were from a long time ago as quite clearly you realise this is a 2023 Alfa and the reputation they had 20-30 years ago is a dim and distant memory.
@@sultanoftippoo3857 i used to be a dealer in various marques, i used to sell them to suckers who see the design and go wow!
The regular 3 series is now a Toyota...yawn...
The BMW M340i starts from £49,870. So no thank you to the Alfa.
Er….the BMW is no Alfa, that’s the point. The Beemer simply lacks the Alfa’s driving dynamics, style and panache…..oh yes, and Alfa’s illustrious history.
I had 2017 340i - yes it was competent but steering was awful
but its far better !!and unique !!and lest trouble
@@nigelfisher3756 Lol absolutely not true. It’s fine to refer the Alfa as that’s your prerogative but don’t lie about the Alfa being superior to the BMW in all those factors you described.
@@gbej1 if anything, BMW has more panache
Great review. Nice one. I have the Gulia Ti sport new from 2020 in Misano Blue with the carbon fiber boot spoiler and a few other mods. The Gulia is by far the best car Ive ever owned. And thats coming from someone who was a BMW 3 series enthusiast for 25+ years. It really is just a better car to drive, really gorgeous on the eye. Its also a bit of a sleeper, judging at the surprised reactions from some other drivers zipping past, full throttle, weeeeeeeee
This thing is ugly😮
Sorry but M440i all the way.
Sorry, but Alfa Romeo Giulia Competizione all the way! the genuine article the inventor! BWW is just an imitation!
My diesel x5 is 0.2 secs slower to 62 and has a better top end. He says it’s quick. 😂
Top of the range, but not. Make up your mind. Still Italian so lacking reliability and still slow as shit. My SQ5 eats these things daily.
But Ugly and Quadrifoglio money though 😊 It’s also an SUV so should be compared with the Stelvio not the Giulia….
Great review but have to disagree with the comments about the Tonale in which, to me, the interior feels and looks very down market in comparison to the Giulia. The tech takes second place for me when choosing a car and I could not live with the clunky Jeep derived gear stick either. It also has the giant Ipad on the dashboard. It’s a no from me but each to their own 😊
SQ5 looks like a family wagon. Drives like one too. Soulless.
Yo have no idea what you are talking about.
Congratulations, you bought yourself the shitiest SUV ever produced. I couldn't believe how badly that thing drove when I test-drove it. Comparing an Audi q5 to Alfa Giulia :) your driving skills must be insane. Enjoy your eggy SUV. Btw. Alfas are super reliable ;) Even the base models get Brembos and carbon shafts. Something you can only dream of in German counterparts.
