What the… Why aren’t there more of these types of reviews by Jeff on Dice Tower? This is amazing! Great production quality, love the humor but still very well explaining the game!
Awesome review Jeff! My game group is playing this tonight, and recent videos of this game are scarce. Your production, clarity, and subtle humor were top notch. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reviews in the future!
Agree with all the positive comments about the quality of the review here, from the production to the thoughtful exposition. More from this man, please.
Jeff Knapp did a stellar job of reviewing this game. I thoroughly enjoyed his humour and I felt that he gave the information I needed to want to buy the game along with the caveats that the rules might take a bit of study due to how they are laid out. Sadly the game is difficult to get a hold of due to issues relating to the manufacturer of the game. I'll be getting a copy if I spot a secondhand one with the metal Poseidon for sale in NZ.
Great review, and helpful for getting a few rules straight...I got my copy some weeks ago, and played through half a solo game - I was distracted by other games and also had a feeling I might be playing it wrong since I finished age 1 in 1 year...but I guess that happens in the game. Anyway I'm exited to get back to it again now. It does look pretty...
Awesome Review. Just played my first solo game (recieved my copy yesterday)... I agarre with everything you said... The quality of the Rulebook and reference sheets is my only gripe with the game...
Top quality stuff Jeff. Did I just watch SUSD or the Dice Tower ? I'm now off to search for more of your videos hoping you have covered something I will actually be able to get to the table! The age of atlantis will have to go into the retirement pile with food chain magnate by the looks of things...
Fantastic (funny) review Jeff! Well done. Your little videos you made before which occasionally aired on the The Dicetower, were hilarious and I think you can be great asset to the reviews here on the channel. Also happy with the choice of this game as I am still awaiting the delivery of my KS copy. And with all the delay and campaign hassle I was not so much anticipating the game anymore. But with this video, I might still be curious to give it a positive turnaround!
Hi! Welcome back! I am indeed somewhat new! Not necessarily a "regular" but I've got lots of plans for 2023!! Stick around! Lots of cool stuff happening on the Dice Tower!
This was an incredible review and very funny! I picked this game up at a local game store a couple weeks ago and have played it twice. I completely agree with you and also rate it a 9, maybe higher as I think it will reveal much more each time I play it. Such a fast game too and has that Boon Lake feel where if you come out ahead early you can work to accelerate the game end while your opponents are enamoured with advancing tech and engine building. Very cool game and very cool theme!!
This really bums me out - unfortunately soon after I posted this, Eldorado Games essentially vanished. He never even responded to me about the missing blue cubes from my copy. I read somewhere that he got a new job and has apparently abandoned his responsibilities on Kickstarter. It's really, really disappointing...
Did you ever get your blue workers? A fulfillment company sent me their spares when they didn't answer emails, I got lucky. Shout out to Pick and Pack Logistics
Such a shame that this KS was one where the creator took the money and ran. Would you consider doing a followup? I would love if someone got the story out there. The real shame is that it appears the game did get made - but won't actually be shipped to anyone. But who can say because the creator disappeared 3 months ago. :-/
Hey sorry but this is completely false. Most backers did receive their copy - there were a few issues that unfortunately the designer didn't resolve before Funagain closed their distribution center. Now he's trying to scramble to even get back his unshipped copies. I won't say he's done EVERYTHING right, but he didn't take the money and run. For one thing, I reviewed my own, backed copy.
@@TabletopToolbox Still waiting for mine, Daniel has not responded for months. Funagain has and said they need him to release the game. 4 months waiting and Funagain gone now.
@@roosterchains *sigh* I feel your frustration. He posted a comment on his last update that he was trying to get the games from Funagain. I think he waited too long - totally his fault. I just wish he'd step up and do the right thing.
This is a brilliant game. The rule book eaves a lot to be desired, but it’s so intricate, and the tech tree upgrading makes every game feel very different.
Have you played Windward? It’s a pretty good game. If you haven’t, give it a shot and don’t relay on BGG marks. Most of the 8 and higher ratings nowadays refer to Kickstarter steroid productions with very often mediocre gameplay and over 100$ pricing.
Enjoyed the review! The Island of El Dorado was the first game I ever backed on KS and was amazed by the production, but the gameplay fell short for me. Windward looked interesting, but didn't quite convince me to back it, same with Capone. Age of Atlantis definitely made me want to check it out, but like you said, the "meh" games so far made me want to wait. Good to hear this one is better than their previous games. El Dorado Games are good people and seem to be getting better with their game design. Can't wait to see what they come out with next. Island of El Dorado and Windward have both made it to retail, so would not be surprised if this one eventually made it as well.
This is a great game. I buy games all the time so end up playing them once or twice gets shelved and taken out every so often. I have played this about 10 times and it always comes to game night! Love it!
WOW! This is the BEST review on Dice Tower by far! I love your humour and your clear and sophisticated opinions. Even better than Toms! Quick! Duck and cover... ;-)
They shouldn't have tried to cram the rulebook all onto one sheet. It was a horrible decision that they got feedback on. They were also asked to include those player help guides for each player. El Dorado ignored all the feedback backers gave.
Great review! Thank you. Also, I really enjoy Windward. I haven't even tried Age of Atlantis yet, because we're still exploring Windward and slowly introducing expansion content. They both arrived in the same box.
The problem isn't really the 5 bucks (thats's moderate compared to others projects and ... its -ok- at the time). The communication was catastrophic beforehand, the delivery to late and i didn't get (or understand?) the mail to pay it on gamefound. They opened it up again or better told that they would, no other mail followed, but now i found the option to pay the additional fee, i hope to get the very promising looking game with the next wave. But even that was hidden beneath some very strange workflow of reopening the pledge, which didn't work as i would expect it to do. We will see :)
Am I the only one who feels that this game was designed originally as a cooperative game? Just based on this video's description of the game play, it seems like it would work pretty well coop.
@@TabletopToolbox interesting... is that posted online anywhere? my group only plays coops, and I did like the look of several of the systems in this game.
If I'm honest, I only knew this because I saw comments on the BGG foruks which, if I recall, were complaining that it's ridiculously hard. I haven't tried it, and I didn't read the rules for it yet.
@@TabletopToolbox it scored higher than the original base game because it added some complexity and revamped the rulebook which was atrocious in the first edition (in it's clarity, not quality, unlike this rule leaflet)
Am I the only one upset at the fact that the art of this game seems like it’s completely ripping off Awaken Realms’ Lords of Hellas ? That Pegasus on the cover is almost exactly the same as Perseus’s in LoH !
I like this review format a lot, however I'm still unclear about how good a game this is. I gravitate towards reviews with a rating system for this reason. I gleaned that the reviewer liked it fairly well and it's the best from this company.
7.2/7.5 is meh? 😁 Lots of games on BGG get scores in the 7.0-7.5 range but that doesn't mean they are bad. Not that I have played Windward but I use to think 7s means good though not great games 😄 . Edit: Ok, fair enough. I felt very meh about Tapestry and it scored a 7.4 on BGG 😂
Haha - and I was trying to figure out how to defend myself! But note the different inflections of the "meh" - I was simply suggesting that it's not universally loved. It is clearly liked more than Islands, which was my primary point. :)
This is an awesome format. Fantastic review, and probably the best rules overview ever posted on the Dice Tower.
Let me have some of that Kool Aid.

I am not interested in the game but I did really enjoy the review, Jeff. Your analysis and humour was excellent!
For what it's worth, that's kinda my overall goal - if you like the video regardless of the game within, then I'm on the right path. Thanks. :)

There's nothing wrong with a game as a 7...that's a good game. There's a 10 scale for a reason, if you want a 3 number scale then rate them a 1,2 or 3
