Wow what a treasure these guys are. This is rare and sublime interplay between true masters of the art. What a privilege to hear this. Thanks for posting!!
Love this. Two other players might have eventually broken into a less adventurous, more standard reading of this song. Of course, not these guys :-). We should expect the unexpected from Bill & Julian. No comfortable resolutions. Instead- their unique sketches of Days of Wine and Roses. What an utterly sublime, deeply musical conversation.
I guess some like this stuff, I know some may criticize me as not being sophisticated but I tend to like music that has harmony and doesn't sound like they're trying to play two different songs at once.
Sounds like two guys noodling each to himself. I think I will do the same. I will record myself noodling on one day and then a few days later I will record a second noodling session. I will then mix the two random noodle tracks into one mix, each track panned hard left or right. I will call this collection of random playing "Days of Roses and Wine" as an homage to these two.
There are two. Bill is using what’s to be a cream tolex Princeton like amp. Julian has something type fender behind him. You can see a little of it in the other videos of this show.
@@gillesswing1423 I thought it was Mesa/Boogie too. I think Mesa/Boogie will be good for his music because firstly Mark 1 was made as a copy of Princeton Revaerb with master volume. But it seems it was a different amp.
is this masterful or just a fart-about. of a half-memory glitch, of a part remembered song, that each is pushing and pulling trying to help recall important phrases, knowing they know the out line of the song but not the tempo, and each being obstinate a musician he keep's to his own idea of the correct pace but... it's as if they'd only heard it on the way to the show, so it's kind of still fresh in each memory as when they were stuck in that traffic, and the window was open for air, and it's melody was on some other cars radio. so all the talking was done in the cab, and a mini hummed rehearsal was done there in advance. so at the gig they just step into this tune as a warm up jam, to pin that fat lady memory to the floor for all. I imagine the car and the radio and maybe a buxom chilling lass tapping out the rhythm on the wheel and the turn of their conversation after that glancing moment. maybe it was too to much to ask even of their undoubted genius for the flesh keeps on falling of the bone of this tune and it doesn't feel quite right. to my ear. it's defiantly a strange flavour, a something that is acquired. while that audience in that room... this is their taste, even if maggoty green and writhing they know their in for a treat even with it raw and somewhat odd just a warm up yeah warm it up it'll be ok..
They can play, they understand music, although to me meaningsless. Confusing, I am not an ignorant concerning music, still I cant understand someone likes it
It's really dense, and their chemistry improves throughout the set It may never be for you & that's ok, but do yerself a service and check back in every few years. It a big ocean and maybe this will hit yer ears better later
Not my cup of tea. Improvising freely over a progression doesn’t mean you’re playing the tune. No sense of melody and harmony for me. I prefer by far Wes Montgomery or Herb Ellis versions.
First couple of minutes is kind of like Saturday afternoon in a guitar store in jazz heaven. But I'll give the opening a few more listens to see what I'm missing. They do settle down a bit after that opening and aren't playing on top of each other so much.
What the hell is this???? This is not the Days of Wine and Roses. I have great respect for both these guitar players, BUT WHAT THE HELL???? Just play the tune.
@@nitroxsam66 , no they didn't. Half way through is the only place where you could hear a HINT of the tune, which is not playing the tune. The half way point you are referring to had dissonance added with added chords, it was also filled with 100s of unrelated melody note (filler material) woven in between the hint of the melody line. This was an arrogant , too good for their own good, performance that butchered a beautiful tune.
This is jazz improvisation, the kind where improvisers chose to take more liberty and treat source material loosely. Very, very common practice in jazz. Like, almost every jazz great from 50’s till now would take liberties like this on occasion. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is not shocking nor suprising to jazz fans.
I suggest Bill and Julian actually read the lyrics of this tune, because their arrangement of this song goes against all meaning and prosody of the lyrics. Total nonsense, and total arrogance, to butcher a beautiful song like "The Days of Wine and Roses" for their amusement. Know the tune, and play the tune.

I think that was one of the most amazing duets I have ever witnessed! And Ive seen them both many times... WOW

This is so great, a Monk like interpretation in some ways, such amazing interplay.
Oh man, two of my favorite masters!! Thanks so much for sharing it!!
What a real masters of the electric guitar they are. God bless them
Such FREEDOM !!🙂
Bill Collings would be so happy :) !! WOW !!
Thought the same thing. 🙏
My kind of fusion. The high point of jazz fusion. Swing and Tin Pan Alley tunes.

yes
I'm three minutes in and they're still tuning their guitars. Can someone give me the timestamp for when the actual song begins?
I understand nothing

You do you...
the fact that they use counterpoint does not mean there is no subjacent harmony!!! anyway, one likes what one likes :D
