Thank you so much. I called the sewing machine repair guy before watching this video and after watching your video, I was able to fix the problem, it was my thread tension....amazing! You are a life-saver and a money-saver. #grateful
This is the first video I've found that actually tells people to clean their machines and especially the ORIENTATION in which the needle needs to face. I will be copying the link to this video to share with friends who don't get what I mean when I say the needle needs to face the right way. Thanks for making this super informative video
Thank you and greetings from Slovenia (in the heart of Europe). You saved my sanity. I just got my first industrial sewing machine 2 days ago (otherwise my fifth machine) and they put the needle the wrong way in and I thought that's definitely the right way, they know what they are doing, so I've been suffering for 2 days (thread fraying !!). Thank you for all your videos on sewing machines. I'm addicted to sewing machines.
Okay, this solved my problem! Bent needle, but I couldn't see that it was bent, as soon as I changed it out, it worked. Thank you so much! Just bought this antique machine and was at a loss!
Thanks , I have an old Kenmore machine that my mom used to make clothes on and it was breaking the thread every time, and all that was wrong was the needele was turned in the wrong direction , You saved my project.
LOL who else came here because they can’t get the stitch to stay? An hour in and every time I check my glorious work the stitches didn’t even penetrate. FOR SHAME!
I actually almost exclusively use new old stock thread. It's great when you find it. Many times my experience has been the same as yours, though. You get some random thread and it goes into the trash.
Thank you for your video. I couldnt stich and the timing fix is very complicated. after 3 days i fix it but was working only the straight stiches so i put a little lower the needle and now is working with all the proggrammes.
Are you the uncle of Chris Fix It? I'm new to sewing, but found this a great starting point to learn more about the tools of the trade. Great work on the video and excellent explanations/demonstrations.
Great explanation and video. Your closeups are so helpful. I’ve been going through some of your videos as I attempt to tune up a singer 319w I just got. It’s just like the one you had in your video of that model . I think it may have the wrong needle (I’ve ordered some correct ones), and I’ve been struggling with the stitch tension and stitch length adjustment. The patterns don’t come out at all like they should, and the motor can hardly turn the wheel, even after a good oiling. I’ll wait for the new needles and try again.
If your machine is easy to turn by hand you may have a weak motor or perhaps the belt is slipping. If the machine is not easy to turn by hand then perhaps there is thread wrapped around something.
Alexander Dyer ok, thanks for the tip. It’s not super easy to turn by hand - definitely some resistance, so I’ll take a look there. Also it absolutely won’t turn when I set it to wind the bobbin. I was thinking the rubber ring might be too large; creates a lot of resistance. Thanks again!
My question to Alexander Dyer, you appear very knowledgeable about stitching. I recently started a job as a stitcher with a company that makes Tents for the Military as well as Commercial use. We have a mechanic on site that troubleshoots any issues. My machine, a Seiko Industrial machine, (can't remember model) often starts to work. And then just stops stitching. ( Just a needle with thread penetrating fabric) The needle is new, the Bobbin is full, and everything looks correct. I'm sure to hold the thread when applicable, everything I was taught. I need this job and want to excel. Any pointers, or advice.
Just ask somebody at work. You will not be expected to know everything your first week. If you are not willing to discuss your work with supervisors and coworkers you will definitely lose your job. You are supposed to discuss your issues at work, that is what they want, if not start looking for employment where work related issues are openly discussed.
I really love your videos, you have a very nice way of explaining things. I have learned so much from you. I recently started my own channel about fixing sewing machines, I hope to be as entertaining and informative as you sometime in the future.
Hey!!! I need your help I'm losing my mind!!!! I have the necchi 559 and it doesnt sew? The motor runs but the needle doesnt move, for some reason it only moves when I turn the hand clutch every single time I stop the machine and start again :((( any help?
You not into sewing machines? But maybe cars, tools, whatever? Don't leave this video without watching from the 11:00 mark? There is good advice for whatever you want to keep running, and running well!
Please help....the feed travel for material is only going back to front, when I push the button,it pops back to back to front travel,it won't stay...sl1200 simplicity
I just got a domestic 468 with no manual and I thought I had it sewing good, but now it seems to sew with only the bobbin thread, no top thread. anything you can please help me on is super appreciated
In my machine (a Singer front -load, oscillating hook) the hook catches the thread when there is no fabric. When there is fabric, the hook catches the thread only when the needle is positioned right. In left and centre, the hook just grazes the thread. I've tried replacing needle, rethreading, combining various fabric+needle+thread, new hook - nothing had worked. The needle isn't hitting anything. Any pointers to the problem please?
I'm out of any new ideas! I own an 1968 Singer 457 stylist . The gear went bad on the shaft, which I did replace. Unfortunatly,Unfortunately, gear I was sold off ebay, was the right part #, but the wrong gear, and in adjusting everything I could think might be binding it, I found out and changed the gear to the correct one, I've dismantled and rebuilt it and still can't get it to stitch.ive replaced needles retired the hook, I'm stuck!
My machine is threaded properly my bobbin is threaded properly it came with the machine has worked fine till now but although the machine is working it is not making stitches help please
I have a more modern heavy singer and I have a needle problem where if I have a thicker layer the machine just makes a whizzing sound, the needle will move a bit but then get stuck again. The only way it’ll work is at top speed! On my old machine I could tighten the inside of the hand turn wheel when this happened but this one doesn’t have that option. Any ideas?
Unfortunately "heavy" does not mean what you would think it means in the domestic sewing machine corporate landscape. What you are experiencing is why so many folks choose to get industrial sewing machines. You have reached past the capabilities of your machine. My channel is full of good old home sewing machines and there is just so much they can sew. You could try adjusting your belt tension and even a new belt may help a bit but for heavier sewing like jeans and coats I would recommend an industrial.
Thanks for the video... always informative.... my Juki 2810 had problems with prewound bobbins ...you are correct about getting Juki brand bobbins ... prewound bobbins are not usually a problem on the majority of machines but on the 2810 it is... btw I’m selling my 2810 ... if u know anyone interested let me know.... thanks again for the video
We have this sewing machine (Janome 620) since I was a kid and this is the first time I'm eager to learn on how to use it. But my mom said they didn't know what's the real problem. My dad is always the one who's good at checking "what-could-be-the-problem" and fix it for a while but it will return to it's usual state. I tried looking for the manual but it's not available on the internet or even in their website. I'm hoping someone could help me to fix this and I would reallyyy appreciate that 💕
Thank you ! Very good to remind us of these potential problems... Do you have a video on walking foot pressure feet? I notice with my sailrite bigNtall that the pressure foot set is so long front to back that it does not hop double or triple seam to double or single seam very well and in fact the stitching may be off in length as it looses pressure until the foot passes the juncture and regains its tension. Any suggestions? I think my foot is really long in comparions to the juki you feature in this video and my feed dogs are quite a bit larger.. I would love to see you explain how that could be corrected perhaps by using another foot? Thanks again..super videos !
I am not familiar with that particular machine but I will guess. My guess is that your issue maybe could be solved by adjusting alternating foot movement to a larger setting. If you still want feet, it looks like Sailrite has a pretty good selection, have you tried them? I might even present them with your issue since they no doubt would be more familiar than I. Good luck.
Have a manual but it's crap and for winding the bobbin the pages are missing lol. I know its the tension but good grief I just can't find the right setting to just make a straight stitch. It's a morse 5100 my grandmother's so I'm lost on how to fix it.

Also, the reverse isn't working properly at all. Have to pull the fabric here too. But it's clearly not working properly.
My needle threader is not working it used to be fine before and now even the machine is not sewing any cloth that I trying to sew my machine is Juki HZL-353ZR-C. Pls. What do I need to check I already change the needle.
When cleaning you have to open it up. Is that good for those of us that are not technical. I dont know. Ihave not ever changed my needle. I have used it since ek. I am scared of even taking it out lest I fail to put it back. Anyway let me not be a sissie and try it out. I have had the machine for 30 years but it sews very well
Changing a needle is a basic sewing machine operator task. Needles are a consumable part and need to be replaced periodically due to wear and or damage. Also needle sizes vary depending on the size of thread used for any given project. Here is another video for you on changing your needle. ruclips.net/video/9wek6_aFy_I/видео.html

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been trying to get my sewing machine to work for 2 days now, turns out my needle is in the wrong way (I didn't set up the machine it was a gift from my mom) so I've been threading the needle backwards
I changed my needle and it didnt sew, the thread kept breaking and it was doing great big tacking stitches! I took side off so I could see the parts moving, oiled them all and then removed my needle and re-inserted hey presto its sewing! I dont know what was wrong, the needle was round the right way, but maybe in the wrong position.? Thanks for informative video, saved my sanity 🤯
This is slightly off the subject, but I was wondering if you have a preference for serger thread (garment sewing). I couldn't even tell you what brand of thread I have, because I bought it a while ago in large quantities, hefty spools, there's no label on them and I can't remember where I got them. How's that for helpful? All I know is, at the time, I didn't think it was cheap thread, because I normally buy the best I can afford. However, there have been times when the thread is so uneven, it actually breaks going through the loopers (or the needle). You see it coming and grit your teeth, hoping it'll make it through - ha! Do you have a certain brand that works well for you? Thanks for all of your videos, Annette
I have two places I go to for thread. I have bought lots of thread from California Thread Company, it is core spun polyester, a ployesther core that is then wrapped with another layer, it is quite soft to the touch. strong, consistent. Not at all like plastic that you get with bonded polyester. www.ctsusa.com/_e/gdept/01/Threads.htm For cotton and other types of thread, I have gotten some very nice, smooth thread from Wawak.com . They carry major brands, some decent sized cones and a pretty decent website, although it seems to be down right now.
I've cleaned my machine, changed the needles...(I am new to sewing)..and still my machine which is a Frisher 105 Star is not sewing? Its going to go though the window soon lol..x

You make great videos on sewing machines. Great information that is well presented. Nice video resolution and editing. I also like all the different machines you highlight. I appreciate your work. Mario from GHUnders.
The part of my (JANOMME 1000 ,New) Machine that needle FITS in, is STUCK inside where side Bobbin sits ! Turning Side wheel does not move it! No JoAnn stores where I live ( Moved to Boston ,from Columbus,OH.) are open , thanks to Covid-19 🤨👎🏽

Alexander Dyer,
Thank You , I try so many times and thought sending my machine for servicing, little did I knew about needle facing wrong way.
Same with me. I was threading the needle the wrong way.
The flat side of the needle goes to the bàck, the ridge side shows on the front side so u can see the ridge side isn't it.
LOL who else came here because they can’t get the stitch to stay? An hour in and every time I check my glorious work the stitches didn’t even penetrate. FOR SHAME!
I came here because I was told to check why the company's industrial sewing machine isn't stitching. And I'm a mechanic. 🫣
Loved seeing your vintage machines in action!

I do my own but you may need to find a local sewing machine mechanic.
You make great videos on sewing machines. Great information that is well presented. Nice video resolution and editing. I also like all the different machines you highlight. I appreciate your work. Mario from GHUnders.
