Decades ago, I acquired a cassette that has since become a treasured artifact of my musical collection. This recording of Semmangudi's performance is one I've listened to so many times that I anticipate each note and nuance. Despite the countless taped concerts of his that I've experienced, Shubhapantuvarali was never quite replicated in others like, for example, Bhairavi swarajathi. The title “earliest Shubapantuvarali” intrigued me to press play, and it was as if no time had passed. The same profound rendition unfolded, each phrase so deeply etched in my memory. Once again, my eyes were brimming with emotion, as the familiar waves of Semmangudi's voice washed over me. TNK’s masterful accompaniment added layers of brilliance, his kalpanaswaras and finishing touches during the alapana not just complementing but, dare I say, occasionally outshining his guru. Only Semmangudi could elevate Shubhapantuvarali, supposedly a melancholy raga, into a rakthi.
I love how he coaxes the Raga to fall into his hands - The beautiful part at 0:45 or so when TNK preempts his ga ga Dha pa, and SSI then modifies it slightly and presents - long karvais, breath work sangathis, the fast phrases to balance it out - all in all a treasure - thanks for sharing ❤
This portion of the alapana matches beautifully with the kalapramana of the composition. I just heard this and shifted to the composition and it is beautiful!!
There was a cassette released by AIR some time in 1980s wherein this krithi was rendered by SSI....trade mark nasal accent is the real highlight of his singing....he had to cope with a stubborn voice which attracted criticism from any yesteryear stalwarts namely pudukottai dakshinamurthy pillai who said is not suitable for vocals .....!!!....sheer grit and determination and untiring practice and effotts have resulted in such masterpieces......!!!
I remember this relayed on AIR Thrissur in the 1980s and I recorded it also. I had the cassette for a long time. Now thanks to the RUclips we have such videos posts.
Thanks for uploading this brilliant rendition in its entirety. The version thus far available on RUclips has the alapana cut and moreover the recording volume is low. The out-of-the--world alapnana, the soulful rendition of the kriti and the trademark "sarvalaghu" swaras reveal why "Semmengudi" may be justly regarded as the most consummate Carnatic musician of his era.
