Happy to see you putting in a distal taper..in the handle, a semi rarity. Also,...you forged out the tip, and the bevels (quite easily) rather than chopping, and grinding them out with a grinder as most seem to do these days. Refreshing! Outstanding job.
Now that right there is a great example of forging to "shape" ! Love your style Nick, and love it more when you post vids like this ;) Thanks for taking the time to share these with us, I always learn something from watching you work! :)
I am NOT a blacksmith but would one day like to take it up as a hobby. I have to parrot Green Beetle's comment about the people who thumbed down this video, why? I have watched a lot of blacksmithing/knife making videos and have NEVER seen the level of work done on a knife before it gets to the grinder. Nick, you are truly a master craftsman. Thanks for the video.
Great job, as always, Nick! I especially love it when I learn something! It didn't take me long before I realized what you were doing when you knocked the blade and tang away from the edge to sway back it. Then you clamped it in the post vise and pulled out the guard! That'll get the unwanted stuff away from where you're working. That alone probably saved me several tries on my own!
There's a thumbs downs here? For a tapered, full tang bowie forged 95% to shape by hand? I can't grind a plunge that nice let alone dress one on an anvil. Thank you for this inspirational video.
Man alive! Shonuf rearranged the molecules in that steel! Put it in a vise, use a cheater bar, bend 90 degrees it'll spring right back, eh??? Is she fast? Balance just forward of hilt? VERY impressive!!!
LittleJim, We know now that proper thermocycling, hardening and tempering matters much more than if the blade was forged or not. We forge now because it is fun and we hate grinding. I have found that blades about this size make it to about 70 degrees and still make it back to straight. It takes a 4 foot bar and all 270 lbs of me to do it though! Thanks for the kind words!
When you forget how good Nick Rossi is after seeing him forge a few years back and then watch this video years later... Comparing his forging to mine is like comparing a jeweler making an awe-inspiring piece and a coked up clown trying to play whackamole with plastic cups and a baseball bat.

I hope to be able to attend classes from this guy. Please keep posting vids like this till i can....
I've always wished that I was able to attend workshops and such. I guess living vicariously through youtube vids will have to suffice.
We have a scholarship program Adam. Check out the website for opportunities.
I was really impressed with how you drew out the guard using your vice.

+Green Beetle I think people honestly just put thumbs down to be assholes.
Green Beetle it would have been nice to see the blade fully finished with the handles, but that's no reason to give a dislike.
That’s awesome and a craft I would like to learn and you are really good thank you 🙏
awesome Nick! Ill be attempting this myself this weekend!

what kind of steel did you use on the video and the thickness thank you very nice work
+Russell Blankenship , Thanks! The steel is 1084 and this knife came out of 7.5 inches of 1.75 x .250.
