The Oilers were the 9th place team in the league this year. I have never understood why people are treating them like cup favourites. And yes, I'm from Edmonton. There are at least half a dozen teams with a very real shot at the cup. Most of whom had better records than we did.
Notice also that the teams which have invested a LOT of money in one or two high-skill high-scoring players are ether out or on the way out and the teams which are more balanced and have depth look to be going on.

It looks that way, but as a Van fan, I'd still rather have won a lottery pick or two, and if you have to pay McD and Drai more... well, that's money well spent, I think. The truth is: McD and Drai are probably underpaid relative to the second tier of players who make 3 to 8 million. The problem it turns out is the third tier players like Joshua, Aman, Soucy, Blueger, Hoglander, Suter, DiGiuseppe and of course Silovs. Scouting and coaching matters. Management is where it's at.
You are right about one thing though: when you don't have mega stars to count on, then you try to find other ways to win. Team defense, team mentality, team accountability. I'd still rather have the mega stars, tbh, but the almost mega stars like Miller, Boeser and Hughes kind of work with the better set of 3rd tier players. Series isn't over though. And if the Oilers had not panicked over Campbell and Skinner, then they'd have had a few more resources in the summer. Resources they need right now. Panic in picking up the likes of Evander Kane and Perry isn't good either, in my opinion.

@@gameburn178 I can promise you that you aren't going to teach us a single thing about the problems our team has. No one panicked at any point on any level. The only panic was you guys losing Demko. We knew what we had and why and we had no choice but to work with it due to cap space and the current goalie market. I might also point out that you guys have lost every other game to this team that you think is so bad. Also, our coach hasn't panicked to the point of publicly humiliating the team to get them going but yours has. You're one game up and you think you can come here trying to school us on a team that we watch closely? Pure silliness.

@@roximama I was talking mostly about Vancouver, which I know better, fair enough. But as for Edmonton, they did sign Evander Kane and Corey Perry, to me that indicates desperation. Those look to be players other teams passed on probably because of possible character issues. I'm sure Kane and Perry aren't huge problems, but still, it suggests a willingness to look for help regardless of signals. As for signing Campbell? I think it was questioned at the time by Edmonton fans. To carry both Skinner and Campbell seemed to suggest a worry about goal. And too much money on a pair of questionable players.
Re: Tocchet. He calls players out sometimes; he's done this for years and we've seen it here this year a few times. Coaches don't have a lot of leverage other than playing time, so coaches do comment on their players sometimes. I'm not sure I like it, but neither the players nor management seem to be too upset with it.
I'm sorry if I sounded like a know-it-all. It is a very small game sample to generalize about. I don't see Edmonton panicking during the series, I'm just suggesting that some mistakes were made by management that are hurting them now. Normal problem for any team including the Canucks. (We have a list of odd decisions reaching back years, lol.)

    • @roximama
      @roximama 26 дней назад

@@Gameburn7-ii7mh It's all about the mess Chiarelli left us. We definitely have some bad contracts that have years left on them. It was the whole panic thing that got me typing there. This has been a long and painful issue for us and the days of panic are years behind us. Desperation? Yes. Panic? No. lol Here's the thing though. Desperation definitely wins cups and panic loses them. So maybe Tocc's move was more desperation than panic and we're just quibbling on words here. It's all good. It's only hockey. lol

It all started when they gave game 1 away. You’re right about them finding ways to lose. It’s a real bummer but that’s the identity of this team. They over used their top guys and it might have worked if they could have won the series 4-1 but too many squandered opportunities and mostly poor goaltending. I’m not very confident they can win the next two. I didn’t notice Hyman at all tonight and 29 & 97 were held in check. After game 4 and the 1st period tonight I thought they were cup contenders.

Wasted Pickards Vezna type performance. The best start of the playoffs, and then 2 periods of 2 steps behind, scrambley ineptitude highlighted by the constant ability to turn an ill conceived clearing attempt into a great setup pass for the Canuckles. It's not like this was close and could have gone either way. Without Pickard this would have been a blowout. It's just baffling. I find it very hard to have a lot of faith in a team that just keeps finding ways to make it far harder then it need be and can throw their goalie to the wolves like that. Worst loss of the year. The bigger decision is who is going to be in the lineup for next game.
Gagner might be alright, maybe just for the fans. If he has a great night but it still ends in a loss, older fans will have something to smile about.
Pickard earned the starter position this series and if they make it to another, Skinner will be on a short leash.
Im thinking there's a bug going around the locker room. The big guns seemed out of it. And theres a rumor that the flu hit them.
Urgency needs to be established, a never say die attitude, and no letting up.

Vancouver now leads the series 3 games to 2. I couldn't watch or listen to the game. I'm actually home now but we had a scheduled power outage between 9 PM and 3 AM so no game, no nothing (sigh). I mean even sports bars were shut down due to power disruption. Going just from the stats Vancouver shot more, hit a LOT more (more than double), and won a lot more faceoffs. Neither team's PP was firing but PK's were both 100%. The rest was basically irrelevant and the level of stats I post. The goal with 33 seconds to go by Miller sealed the deal for a Canucks win. As near as I can tell Pickard played great but the rest of the team didn't. Oilers must now win the next 2 games to move on to round 3. Take care all.

This game was ours but we p!$$%d it away! Early lead. Brown great opportunity missed, "3" shots on "5 PPs", massive brain fart by Bouchard, and bad change and confusion at the bench on winning goal cost us this game. I dont buy into the "OILERS ARE TIRED" mentality. Canucks should be tired too!? If only we capitalized on all our opportunities in the 1st period? we easily win the game! We just needed to bare down and score on those opportunities, and then hang on the rest of the game, exhausted or not! Going into next game, and beyond, how well the coach manages the lines is gonna be key! ..... Imo, last night the 3rd & 4th line were playing really good (exception Cory Perry) and especially the 4th line, these lines should've been given more ice so our stars didn't have to play so much. The Coach needs to solve this issue for the next game. The plan should be to try and score early a couple goals or so and make the 3rd /4th lines play more, especially in the 2nd period where Vancouver seems to start owning the game and have their way! In the 3rd period, the stars can be used more heavily to control the play and put the Canucks away! Anyway, this should be the strategy imo.. Lastly, Perry should be benched!. Its bad enough we are getting hemmed in and hes TOO SLOW to help out! Its like its a PP when he's out there! Put Carrick or Gags in! 😡☹

Only reason Oilers looked 'zomg amazing' the first few games was from triple shifting their top line.

is rumors I am hearing: flu bug, Drai has broken ribs. Those are just excuses but somehow their energy level needs to be improved as they looked slow and tired compared to Vancouver in game 5. Canucks have also adjusted and solved the Oilers powerplay, giving Edmonton 5 power plays they should have score on 1-2 of those (which makes the game a win) but went 0/5 as the Canucks have adjusted taking away the bottom corner cycle.

I can't help but think that it's time to stop blaming everyone else for McDavid's not winning a cup yet. I think his own play is a part of the problem and he has things to work out before he's going to get it. I still have some hope that it will be this year but honestly, my hopes aren't high this year for the same reasons David expressed.

Conner was not Conner last night. He looked tired and worn down. No lack of effort but he did not dominate as usual. Zero for 5 on the power play was a big factor. The first unit did not have their usual ability to generate good chances.
Calvin was pretty good in net but, I would fault him on the first 2 goals. Somehow he does not pick up the shot from the point (which was not particularly hard) on the first goal. On the second he simply needs to be in his butterfly on the post, but is moving too soon and opens the five hole very wide of a soft backhand to go through.

Series isn't over but it's probably time to look at some uncomfortable truths.
Edmonton is a top heavy all-star team that has to overplay their stars to be competitive. McDavid, Drai, Bouchard, Hyman - they're tired because they play way too much. In the third last night they were noticeable absent, Vancouver dominated.
Could be a blessing or a curse that Edmonton plays in the weakest div in hockey. They don't need a total overhaul but they badly need some depth. If they didn't get LA (and then the worst series a goalie has had in recent memory in 2022 - Markstrom) every year they'd look like the Leafs.
With Drai's contract only a year away it's time to start having serious conversations. (I am aware that Nurse's contract isn't his fault).
Is Drai more valuable than work ethic and a winning mentality? It doesn't feel to me like they can have both.

If the big guns tanks have hit E we are in serious trouble. We let the Canucks win some games they should not have, they did not award us in kind. Perry should not be in the lineup, but if you are of the belief that he still provides veteran savvy you certainly don't put him on the wing with your two fastest skaters. The sad truth is he's probably in the lineup because your only replacements are Carrick, Gags, or Erne certainly not the same depth as Nucks.

Game 4 oilers matched Canucks physically. The goaltending let oilers down early. Pickard should not have been their starter but he’s played well. The Oilers are soft, plain and simple. Holland let Bjugstad and Kostin go. They won’t play Carrick, it was a poor trade deadline and good riddance to Ken Holland. They are losing right now today because they are getting bullied around physically. I knew this would happen, it always happens with this team when they lose physical players. They should take out Perry and Ryan and insert Carrick and Gagner. I’d bet they are hungry and will play like it.
