- Let's do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful, tonight with Bruce McCurdy and David Staples. Tonight they dig into Edmonton's 5-1 win over the Canucks of Vancouver with their 2 Good Things, 2 Bad Things, 2 Numbers and 1 Conundrum podcast
Sam carrick changed the dynamic of the lineup. Perry cycle game is weak and foot speed very slow. He was handcuffing his line mates. The boys are buzzing without Perry
Having Perry's experience around the group is valuable, but he seems to have entered the limbo-land between being a player and being a coach at this level. A DRyan-Clouder-Foegele line that checks well, wins face-offs, and is always a danger to score, is needed to advance deeper.
Carrick had six hits and Kane had 7! Good to see them pounding the boards.
@@dalriada And Carrick was over 58% on the dot. Here's hoping the draft capital spent provides many more good returns.
I like Carrick's game. Plays a pretty solid game. They seem to win with him in the lineup.
Thanks guys for always doing the podcast. Watching from Germany (+9hrs time difference) it helps to get a real understanding of the game and how everything happened.
Hey what's the procedure for watching games in Europe. We just got back from Spain and Sportsnet wouldn't allow a live feed on the game and these two was my my go to 1st thing the next morning.
Good to see Leon has followers from home! He should have the whole country rooting for him, he’s such an awesome player! But his playoff performances are off the charts! His numbers have put him amongst the very best all time.
@@darrylfischer there different websites you can watch on: nhl66, or nhlwebcast for example
A big turn round, the coach played the 4 lines more tonight, playing the 4 lines is essential to go forward in the playoffs ,the oilers and top line was a transformation
Game 7 is going to be a barn burner. Maybe literally in the aftermath.
😅
😂
Ottawa better deploy extra military😂😂🤣😂😂
Bruce’s smile when David mentions that Silvos stumbled made me laugh.
Man this one’s a lot happier than last one lol
Bad deal for Pickard Lol. Plays the best goalie game of the year and gets sat. Skinner got it done without having to work to hard due to a really good team D. Looks like it'll be Skinner now starting game 7, so I sure Hope Oilers can keep that level of D. Solid Win. 🌁
Skinner gets carried by the team for the whole season. Then he gets all the praise for this “inflated” stats 😒
The defense needs to understand, I dont care who's in net, Vasilevski, Bobrovski, Ottinger....if you're not helping your goalie to defend, hes gonna look average.....Skinner hasnt been given helped on a few occasions this series. They need to bring this same game plan for tomorrow, , and more, for Gm 7. THEY CANNOT LEAVE SKINNER HANG OUT TO DRY! The defense needs to play solid tomorrow. G O G!
Hey@Ace yep.. Picks got us this far! Great team win! Hope they replicate it in gm7!
@@user-bi6yf4hv9gactually it does matter who’s in net. You have not seen Price, Saros, Brobobsky, Oettinger, Vasilevsky bail out their defence when they falter or have a defensive break down. It will happen a few times during a game and I don’t trust Skinner will make the grade A saves. Skinner always need the defence to help him out. He’s the worst goalie left in these playoffs.
@@tman6663 For sure ya!
Loving David's love for Dylan! He has always predicted this!
Draisaitl has 100 points in 60 playoffs games
It's unreal!
What?
How is that possible?
😀
He is simply a beast
2 days isn’t enough time to bask in the glow of victory. Also Bruce’s turtle island shirt wins again!!
Keep Carrick in the lineup. It'll help them win. Even Brown had a bit more perk in his game. I don't think they should change the lineup for the next one
Skinner still scares me. Over the summer, he desperately needs to work on his edges, lateral movement. He was sliding around and out of position for much of the game.
His tracking of the puck is awful as well. If you watch his head his is often looking around trying to figure out where the puck is. At one point he was staring at the corner looking for the puck while we were skating it out of the zone. If the Canucks had been first on the puck it would have been in the net and he wouldn't have had a clue. If Skinner plays like he did tonight and the Canucks bring half of what they did in game 5 we lose.
In this series, the Canucks have had 8 periods with 5 or less shots (and one period with 6 shots) not including the OT. That's the equivalent of 3 full games. They've only had 5 periods where they reached 10 shots.
The Oilers have scored first in 5 out of the 6 games.
The Oilers defense has been lacking for years but they've played team defense well enough in this series to have won by now. I really hope they don't lose game 7.
Šilovs me....Šilovs me not.
😄
😂😂😂
They got the win. No sitting back next game, they need to come out hitting again if they're going to pull this off. Still not sure about Skinner, he really wasn't tested much.
Oh, they gotta sit MacLeod, guy is too afraid to get hit, scared of his shadow.
Gotta be better still for next game
B+ tonight A plus on Monday!
Great work guys, have a great night, see you Monday night
Thanks Picks for getting us here!
Teams normally always switch to the other goalie after a loss.
Great Holloway comparison to Messier, if he could bring the nasty once I awhile down the road, this kid is going places!
I knew they would tie it up! Great team win Oilers! Go get em in ‘couver!
When Nurse shows up it makes a difference, keep the turpintine handy when he slacks off 👍
Great game! Bruce make sure you wear that T shirt on Monday!
McDavid had more energy tonight, and it robbed off on the rest of the players
That choice for Skinner in for Pickard wasnt a small one. Definitely needed to see Skinner rebound.
Vancouver is going to do everything they can to not have it end at home.
A dominant early showing can really cement a win for the Oil in Vancouver.
I agree. Getting a good showing from Skinner is more valuable than a third strong showing from Pickard. But it was a gamble.
On the Hoglander goal, McLeod had an opportunity to blow up Petey coming along the boards but instead slammed on his breaks and allowed Petey to go around him....If that was the other way around....McLeod wouldve been knocked into next week! ....McLeod needed to capitalize on that opportunity and hit one of their best players.
Rumor has it the Canucks room is divided and Toch has lost them. Expect a relatively easy Oil victory.
David, get a quieter keyboard or keep the microphone farther away.
Liked Carrick put him in again!
I no joke thought Holloway was Macdavid on that first goal initially. Skinner was shaky as hell but he went like 13 minutes without a shot and I think he had all that time to just get rid of any stress or anxiety he had. Then played well.
Got milk?
Bruce: "Gulp"

Series is all tied up at 3 each. Series will be decided in Vancouver on Monday. Tonight the Oilers came to WIN not just PLAY. They had 10 more hits, nearly double the shots, both PP's went scoreless so both PK's at 100% tonight and there were a lot of minutes doled out (especially at the end of the 3rd with 4 misconducts given out). Oilers were clear winners tonight in a must win elimination game. Hopefully they can do it again Monday. They've statistically been the better team this series now just finish the series and move on. That Holloway goal was a thing of beauty, it was like he was channeling Connor McDavid for the lateral shift and speed. Skinner was great in net not facing a lot but stopping all but the first when Nurse, Desharnais etc. decide to puck watch rather than play D. First Bouch Bomb at the end of the 1st called off for interference (though Blueger pushed McDavid into Silovs). I tactfully say no comment to the officiating. Take care all.
Thank you agin for these stats!…I really appreciate them!
@@dianedyck3474 Thanks Diane. Take care
Need these goals from different players. Holloway's and Kane's were beauties. Nuge has never been one to stand in front of the net, but do please keep on flying by it with your stick to the ice.
Nurse, on his early end to end rush, was in good position (with teammates behind him) to cut in on the net and create a more dangerous chance, instead of trying to luck out like Zadorov did.
Actually was 6-1 because that was a good goal
What do you guys think about Nurse? Sooner or later he needs to be moved with that Contract 🙄
Yah....as soon as I heard Nurse signed that contract, I just about hit the ditch.
I even remembered Stauffer saying if he doesn't get it , he walks....I would have let him walk.
Nurse's talents are not be maximized by putting him with 3rd pairing defenseman talent wise. Especially putting him with Ceci has hurt his game, oilers should have been playing Broberg all year or looked to make a trade last offseason. His salary sucks but trading him would create another hole in the lineup. Look at Bouchard for example, he use to make some real boneheaded turnovers/mistakes but pairing him with Ekholm has really settled his game.
@@dnice4145Trade nurse and play Broberg next year
@dnice4145 I don't think so, Ceci is an alright dman. I think what Darnell's biggest problem is, almost like he has trust issues. He tries to do far too much, rather than trusting his winger or d partner to do the right thing, he throws himself out of position.
Tonight was a prime example....one guy disagreed with me on live chat( he thought McLeods fault), I thought that 1st goal was a lot of Nurse's fault, he had Hoglander covered.. all of a sudden out of the blue, he leaves him!!!!!....WTF? The puck carrier was no threat.
As far as him being traded...too late now. But we're stuck with him, so 🤷what can you do.
All I'm saying is, for 9.25m, we could have got a "stay at home" d and able to keep Klim Kostin.
Sorry for the essay 😊
Klim Kostin a player i woulda love seen stayed.
Great game from oilers. Just stop overpassing and never let up when there is an opportunity to lay a player out cleanly. It’s the playoffs for crying out loud. Punish your opponents. Overall very nice fight back from oilers. Need to bring it game 7 and let’s get to the conference finals.
You 2 boys look a bit happier tonight, in game 5 you almost gave up on the oil,
Great commentary tonight, congrats
Oilers 4 line game could be big if they get past Canucs. Stars are the favorite vs. Canucs/Oilers, so whichever faces them has to raise their game to another level with minimum errors allowed from anyone.
But like that old saying..."the game ain't played on paper, it's played on a field" - Yogi Berra?
Nurse needs to be more aggressive . His passive play is leading to unnecessary chances against. Be aggressive, dont give them time to make plays.
Bruce, what tee shirt are you wearing on Monday?
In football, if you pass on every down, the defense will ignore the running game and concentrate everything on the passing game. Canucks have shut down the Oilers PP mostly because the Oilers try to do same thing over and over (pass into the crease to Hyman). Van keeps deflecting the passes away. Oilers need to try and score some Californians. Not only will they get more SOG (rebounds etc) but it will loosen up the Canucks PK which will then make Hyman (netfront)and Draisaitl (executioner shot) more potent IMHO.
Skinner doesn't need to be elite to win a cup, see Darcy Kuemper, Avs 2022. He just needs to be average. Oilers D needs to be borderline elite to compliment the already elite offense.
It’s a good thing we got to rest skinner first thise two games because he needed to rest…I would love to see Picard in net for the last game but what do I know …coach will decide…so far the coach has made good decisions!
Can you guys tell me what interference is? Why is JT Miller allowed to literally bear hug Connor McDavid all the way up the ice after a faceoff with no call to start a game (game 5) which sets a tone that allows VCR to pretty much do that the whole game but yet Drai gets called right away in game 6? I'm not whining here (though it seems like it) I just want to know what I'm missing!
Playoff hockey, each & every referee has their own perspective on how they see & interpret the rules aka human nature or no rhyme or reason will explain this phenomenon to you that you can possibly understand or agree with. So accept it, as it is what it is or go nuts.
I have to watch from USA & ESPN showed MsDavid’s open net on a power play… & no shot. He must be hurt- he won’t shoot. That’s what ESPN’s PK Subban thought too.
Uh oh....now according to David, Skinner is a hybrid of Tiny Thompson, Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur and a sheet of plywood.
The win was extremely simple....3 syllables "team defense".
I love David's take on wins and losses, kind of funny actually. Should have been this, should have been that ...guess what?..hockey is unpredictable. Been that way for the 60+ years I've been watching. That's why it's the best game in the world.
Last time you will have mcdavid and Leon
😊😊😊
The pressure is all on the Canucks. Keep the lines rolling, put Ceci back with Nurse and limit their time on ice. Unless Nurse starts banging people around in front of the net, he is useless
Mute while typing please !
Glad the Oilers won but Skinner was flopping all over the place, especially 1st period.
The oilers canuks series is easily the worst series in this years playoffs, it does have near the same intensity as all the other series had very little contact and the time and space the players have compared to all other series is a JOKE. It almost like a regular season game, not playoffs. Whatever team moves on I can't see them winning a game in the next round.
Sounds like you’re a bitter flames fan.
Two ole men still trying to be relevant
Rumor has it the Canucks room is divided and Toch has lost them. Expect a relatively easy Oil victory.
