I have also been ordering the mesh sanding disks, I might have to check out some of their other offerings. I didn't recognize the guy where you asked "Anyone know this guy???, but I did recognize Matthew Peech, a bit later in the video.
I finally took the plunge with the mesh discs. OH MY. What was I doing all this time? I always bought big assortments instead of getting the full line of Cubitron. Unbelievably worth it. I sanded 4 serving trays and 2 9x13 clipboards and think I can probably sand 2 more trays. It gets thrown around a lot but this is a game changer for me
Hey, you were in my neck of the woods Matt!! I live about 3-4 miles as the crow flies from that very 3M plant! Should have come in winter just to say you have experienced a Minnesota winter day! Safe travels!
I just used their Cubitron for reapply oil finish to my desk and compared to standard pad its crazy. Of course had to buy the pad savers, but still its an awesome product. I use their VHB tape for years now which is the top of the line product, but found another one with this sandpaper.
Thank you again for another great video. I have been using the 3M Cubitron for a while now; although I love the job it does I get very frustrated with how little time it last before flying off the sander or totally ripping up the backing of the sandpaper. I have replaced the sanding pad on all my sanders but find that was not the problem. Any suggestions?
Sander is nice, I splurged on it. 1 month after the 12 month warranty it broke and I had to really talk them into fixing it. I sure hope it doesn't break again..
Hey Matt I seen you had a shot with Matthew Peech testing the sander. You guys planning on doing a Calab? Love both of you guys. Now just need the Samurai to come down south.
I found Cubitron to really last 20 minutes and still sand pencil lines even when going inch/second. However the backing that hooks to velcro fails (cubitron flies off!). I even tried putting a new pad it cubitron still flew off. Any thoughts? Also, how to fit cubitron to festool 80x133 ?
I have a feeling this is something you won’t understand until you actually use it for yourself. I have never tried 3M, but I think I will see what all the fuss is about
Any suggestions as to which 3M sanding discs would be best for pallet wood? I get so confused every time I look because they have so many skus. I've been wanting to try out 3M sanding discs for a while and I need more now so figured I'd give them a try. I'm using a Dewalt 5" cordless random orbital sander btw. Thanks
775L Sandpaper is a 10/10 but the backing needs to be better. If you are going to be switching out between grits especially. I give the backing 3/10. 3M, What say you?
Next you should do a video on which one to buy. I have been using the new paper and it is longer lasting, sands smoother, less dust. I looked at the products they have and WOW they got a bunch of stuff. So, I was goanna purchase one along with the collector. Just could not decide which one? Also need to know which is better, air power or electric power. Have a blessed day. Thanks.
Great video. After your review, I picked up the 3M Xtract Cubitron II Net Disc. However, when I was using it to sand drywall or wood, I noticed the back of the sandpaper would get gummed up, effectively blocking the dust extraction (Yes, I had clean filters on my extractor), which is a real bummer because I liked the idea of the product. Now, I've switched back to regular sandpaper.
Very informative video. I just got a sample pack of Cubitron in an order from Taytools. I was impressed with the 80 grit especially. Cut sanding time in half in my opinion. Now I'm thinking about the 3M dust extractor you featured in video. I currently use a home-made cyclone and my old Ridgid (noisy) shop vacuum. Would you recommend still using the cyclone separator with the 3M?
@@731Woodworks I made the cyclone over 6 years ago and has helped a lot. My unit is a 5-gal paint bucket with a Thein baffle. The bucket sits on top of an old, discarded Shop Vac a neighbor was throwing away.
I definitely love the sandpaper. The extractor looks good too... which of the 3M or your Festools do you prefer? I'm still trying to decide whether I want this one or a CT36...
I like the Festool but mainly because I have several Festool tools that it works with, Domino, ETS125 Sander, Rotex Sander, Miter Saw, and Track Saw. Both are good dust extractors.
Should have asked about the ultra flexible pro grade stuff they stopped making. Lasted way way lionger than cubitron or any other sandpaper. It had a very rubbery film backing that was amazing.
I guess I'll be the only one who hates the Cubitron disks, but I've had really bad performance from them. I tried some on my Milwaukee ROS, and it made the sander feel out of balance, almost to the point I couldn't hold on to it or keep it flat on the surface. When I switched back to a Klingspor disk it ran just fine. I tried the 3M disks on my new Festool sander and had the same problem.
I'm not Matt, but I am quite familiar with the 3M products and will take a stab at answering your question. Xtract and Cubitron are "brands" used by 3M. Products branded Xtract include abrasives and tools designed for dust extraction - but is often associated with the 710W mesh abrasive with the pattern on the abrasive side. Products branded Cubitron include all abrasives that utilize some form of ceramic mineral - but is often associated with the 775L which utilizes a 3 mil film backing. The confusing thing is both products fall under both brands. With that said, the 3M Xtract 710W is lower in price, but isn't as durable as the 3M Cubitron 775L. Both products have similar abrasive construction and should offer similar cut and finish. But if you sand over corners and edges frequently, you may see a benefit in using the more expensive 775L film disc. Hope this helps!
@@DB_Customs Thank's much for takng the time to answer this question so well! Now I understand. I had a Dewalt 5 inch orbital that I tried to uses the Extract disks and though extract worked better that the Dewalt brand disks they kept flying off. So when the Dewalt 5in orbital sander started going bad, after 10 years of use, I deciced to go for the 3M 5 inch orbital sander but had buyers remores at fist. That quickly went away because thier 3M sanding sytem is probably the best. I will order a box of Cubitron today. Thanks again for your time! I also learned a great deal from watching this video and never realized the benefits of a good dust collection system over and above just taking the dust out of everything. I fabricate specialized hardwood keepsake boxes on Etsy and sell hundreds! 3M has changed everything!
@drewwitt Is that you sanding SOMEONE ELSES hard white maple????? // Thanks for the deep dive Matt. Looks like you had some good company to grab beers with afterwards.
anyone who's ever sanded without a dusts extractor, etiher bcs u dont have one or just to see, you'll know how fast your paper cakes up, and goes from 40 grit to like 600
I used the 775L for the first time a week ago on a cedar deck. It worked awesome, until it didn't. I went through 2 sheets, in 40 feet of deck boards.... Until they fell apart. @ 2:45 you can see what happens to the sandpaper.
Interesting. What grit were you using? Using dust extraction? At 2:45 that was dust that was caked on the sanding disc because there was no dust extraction, this one wasn't coming apart.
i myself bought the 3m 100mm electric sander and its nice when it works but if i use it for around 2-3 hours it gets hotter and i would say more unstable and starts vibrating more and more and cause of that it gets hotter and hotter until the heat shutdown kicks in and it gets loud and i mean extremly loud through all the vibrations i already got 2 replacments form 3m so no complains there but even the 3rd one has the same problem and honestly im getting tiered of it :/
Problem is that Cubitron has great abrasive properties but is TERRIBLE at sticking to Velcro pads. I have completely stopped using us a custom furniture builder
3m 710w. You have other sand paper? THROW IT ALL AWAY NOW. This paper, life changing. Sanding is so much easier, last longer and saves money in the end.
