This is a great question! I have 2 "defective" copies of the ABCA4 gene which causes SD. Each parent passes on 1 copy of this gene. If Steven is NOT a carrier (meaning he would have 2 properly working ABCA4 genes) then the baby will not develop SD. They will only be a "carrier" of the condition. If Steven is a carrier of a "defective" copy of this gene then the baby will have a 50% chance of developing SD.
