This Danish drama series focuses on the Second Schleswig War between the Kingdom of Denmark and the German Confederation. In the middle of the 19th century, two brothers, Laust and Peter, grow up in poor conditions in south Funen, away from other troubled lands. Their father returns home after a three-year battle with Prussia in 1851 and, as they get older, they become more curious about the world outside their hometown. Both brothers fall in love with the estate manager's daughter, Inge, a beautiful, well-read and fearless woman. In 1864, however, war is on the horizon as Prime Minister Monrad stirs up political unrest when he declares the province of Schleswig as property of the Danes, despite a peace treaty stating otherwise.

Probably the best scene in the movie. Really terrifying. The emblem of this Prussian Hussars (skull or death's head) was later adopted by German Armored Trops. And at the eastern front it was quite often confused with SS one with grave consequences for german tankers

Never understood why they allowed the SS-TV to wear it as they had no direct lineage to Totenkompf. The Armored shared a lineage being the new Heavy Cavalry

I don't know why the Danes even have bayonets if they don't use them. Instead of reloading use that pointy stick to charge. Later as well when the officer attacks: Charge the hussars with your bayonets! Don't reload! Doesn't make sense. Apart from that, looks well acted and interesting.

1864 is a brilliant film about a war I knew little about. So little that I had to read as much as possible about it. Compare it to what was happening in the US at the same time - The American Civil War!!! Much larger but just as brutal!! Interesting to see the use of period firearms and as for reloading, I have a Remington Zouave .58 cal. and it is a pig to load and fire.

they have bayonets afixed with no threat from cavalry present with marksmanship a priority and with it on they dont use it also the execution seems kinda far fetched but i guess theres a chance that in the entire 19th sentury it may have happened once, treatin it like theres irl kdr
similarly with how he cut the wrist off i guess its semi plausible since it went at the joint but this setting is a good concept and pretty unique idea but accuracy isnt its strong suit

I can't speak for the Danes specifically but many armies sighted in rifles with bayonets affixed. The Russians did so into the 1940's when bayonet combat was a rarity, so I don't think it's out of the question for these guys to have done so, as well.
