Besides Changes (which took 5 years to finish), Nonagon and Polygon were the albums that took Gizz longest to write and it shows with how complex their arrangements are. A lot of their albums are made by jamming out and picking the best of that (such as Petro, where Stu provided a lyrical concept to the band and they jammed around that). Also, Castle in the Air is the only time Leah appears on the album so don’t worry about the narration. Really excited to see your thought on the Inner Cell trilogy!
Nothing wrong with having your own opinion dude! This is probably one of the best albums, I love the Fantasy theme it has. Also, I think the reason why they have vocals like "BALROG BALRGOG BALRGOG X100" It's purely because they are also having fun with it. If you listen to their very early music, its also a bunch of young friends playing and having fun, and the vocals are very repetitive. They just liked doing it I guess
Yes. 2 drummers. All the song writing, arrangement, sound and end product is Stu Mackenzie. But it's not just about Stu. The best band i've known in my lifetime, and i'm 52. Off down to Manchester next month to see them again. Wooo
I don't comprehend how it's possible for King Gizz to be so creative. One thing I find really interesting, and something you hear other creative people say as well is that worrying too hard about what you're doing or resting on your laurels inhibits how creative you continue to be. Stu has said similar things, Joey has said if you put out shit it doesnt matter youl just do another one. So King Gizz continue to just keep making, and having fun, with their egos somehow not getting in the way. So when they make a song like Balrog as per your example they make it because it's an idea they have and run with it. I don't think they care if it isn't as good as that last one or whatever. Maybe once you're aware of all their music you won't be so fased. Plus Balrog is a completely fine and good song anyway. Instead of worrying about the standard of your music you just make it, theirs all just happens to be the bomb. Surely this approach is a contributing factor to that.
Yea thats deff a way to approach it, I know myself when writing its a mixture of what I think is catchy, what I feel and pushing my skill set…it is hard for me to not worry about my own music
I meant generally by the way not talking about "your" music in that last part. Other interesting facts are that Stu said something like he always thought hed get into making music for cinema. Which totally makes sense with all these albums that are like little movies. On a podcast I listened to the other day he said that there's only so much he has to say about himself so that isn't the focus of his writing. Though he does seem to sing about sleeping a bit.
hey man, your videos are great. thank you for reacting to king gizzard, i hope you do all of their stuff eventually lol. ps yes this is when they had two drummers, and to my ears most of the drums are panned hard left and right. another ps polygandwannaland is by far my favorite from them.
They play Castle in the Air live in their one of their KEXP sets. It has a different vibe as they use electric guitars for it instead of the acoustics on the album, but it still hits hard! Also AFAIK, even though they had two drummers at this point, it was just the current drummer Cavs that played on their records most of the time. But I think he often played two separate parts so it still sounded like two drummers.
15:00 honestly this is the main reason I enjoy your reactons. I'm a musician and you are too and when you have a music perspective it changes how you view some songs. I had fun trying to figure what they were doing and how they were getting certain sounds and I can tell you are too and that's enjoyable to watch.
I mean, how many non-KGLW fans would associate the six guys spewing gasoline in Self-Immolate with the subtle sounds of Polygondwanaland? And this is their strength and what distinguishes them from other groups around the world. And this is just the beginning of the surprises. There will still be traces of the Eagles, Santana or Steely Dan. There will be associations with Black Sabbath, Motorhead and the Beatles. It's a great journey in the footsteps of popular music. And none of us have any idea if the next album will be a country twist or an electronic Kraftwerk adventure. Or maybe a disco? One thing is for sure. None of us will pass by this album indifferently.
Easily my favorite album of theirs! The next suite of songs is one of their best pieces of music ever. If you could, listen to the Chunky Shrapnel version of the suite after the album version! Its so good
In an interview after one of the KEXP sessions, they said of the 5 albums released in 2017, which includes MOTU, Poly was the most considered. PS don't listen to the haters, really like your reactions.
as a big fan of them since polygondwanaland, i kinda get the feeling of expected something complex from them when try to dive in into their discography at first. honestly, it took a long time for me to really get king gizz because the repetitive and simplicity of their other records. and heard polygondwanaland first doesn't help, because same as you. i know what these guys are capable of. hell man, there's one particular song on Flying microtonal banana that hell of repetitive. and that song was my second introduction to their tune after crumbling castle and it was really holding me back to explore more of them back then. i wont spoil you, but you better prepare your energy drinks when dive in into this one lol. but overall, the banana is still one of my favorites and has a strong foundation for their tune. but after look at their music videos and the goofiness but awesome ideas of their album concept and theme, i saw them as a talented musician and bunch of good friends that enjoy and having fun makin music, and i'm enjoying what they produce to us fans. no matter what it is. its like watching a tv series. you'll never know what you're gonna get on the next album. even if some song or the album doesn't really click to me or dont match my expectation, i wont be able to bring my self to hate them, i already hooked to them and curious what will they produce and explore next time. just to continue watching their journey.
I'm happy i got to buy an official pressing from the band, only 2000 were ever printed by the band themselves, while anyone is free to make their own pressings with their own album art and whatnot to make money without the band taking any of it. The official album pressing came with unique colored wax, gatefold with unique art for the insides and back, with the lyrics written into the art. It's such a badass album to have physically.
They still have an official release through ATO. It’s a tri-color vinyl with a upside down poster of Stu and lyrics sheet on the back side. However this series is not a limited release I got it at my local shop and they’re available online.
@@kyleaguiar3447 This is not the special edition from Flightless, and doesn't feature any of the art done special for the Flightless pressing by Jason Galea. It is as official as any other pressing by anybody else than Flightless, even though they release their stuff through ATO for the North American market.
@@TheEveryDayC like I said it’s not limited. The band is no longer associated with flightless, the KGLW label bought back the rights. Figured you would dig poly, maybe the 3rd most at worst of all their records. Do think you should go WAY back on the next one to hear where they came from cause they still rip. 12 bar bruise, willoughbys beach, or what’s maybe their best record in mind fuzz. It’s kind of a travesty no one is suggesting mind fuzz because it’s one of the coolest sounding psych rock records out there. While kiiiind of the same field as nonagon, the songs each sound way different. Has a strong case for their best record. My top 3 are petro, poly, and mind fuzz. It rules.
This album and MOTU are tied for me. The biggest difference is just my mood. If I wanna vibe and chill I choose Polygondwaland. If I wanna thrash and let some energy out I’ll do MOTU Overall King Gizz has so many good, varying albums it’s difficult to definitively choose one to be the best imo
You wonder why if Stu is so skilled at lyrics why does he do stuff like Balrog. I ask you this: If you can shred super quick and skillfully on a guitar, is that the only way you should ever play it? Sometimes a song calls for simple strumming. But I *do* think you're saying Polygondwanaland right. And yeah, this was when they still had two drummers.
One of the gimmicks of this album is that they use poly rhythms (which is to say multiple rhythms going on at the same time). This is probably the album where they make best use of two drummers.
There are 2 drummers here, yes! Anything after Infest the Rats Nest is just Cavs on the drums Edit: thanks kyles5513 😅 it's hard when multiple albums get released in the same year to keep track lol
Gizz are at heart a rock jam band, which means they rely on groove and vibe. Because of this, they are excellent live. Polygondwanaland shows us just how good they can be if they slow down and more carefully produce an album. I've been following this band since Quarters! (2015), and Poly remains my fave. And, they've gone into a jam phase after COVID. In 2020 and 2021 they were locked in their homes producing KG and LW without seeing each other. They've been going mental just jamming since.
