Ugh, as much as this got me laughing....I got super emotional because memories came back. I remember all the times my dad said "he wasn't hungry' around dinner...and now I realized all those times...he wasn't eating so I could. He would even go without even more so he could get me a happy meal every so often so I didn't feel like we were struggling at a young age.

The only time i ever used one was when i ran out of hot dog buns, and even then i felt disgusted with myself to stoop so low. I still had some inner pieces, too. I just thought it would have worked the same as hot dog buns, but it only felt despiration and sadness. I wasn’t even really poor, i had enough to go by, and even then when i took that first bite, i felt sorry for myself. That thing is just evil depression.

Plus with the bag you can drain that water off, mix up some crunchy peanut butter with the half the seasoning packet, a soy sauce packet, some hot sauce and some hot water and boom you've got ghetto pad thai.

For all my strugglers out there here are a few of my struggle recipes I've made over the years.
1 Raman and eggs, make raman noodles as directed and when 1:30 minutes of cooking time is left crack an egg or two into it, the eggs will be perfectly poached and you can dip the noodles in the runny yoke, if the whites aren't fully cooked you can drape some of the hot noodles over the eggs to finish cooking the whites, other raman tip is to use half the seasoning packet and use less water, save the half packet and use it for your next bowl of raman, doing this you can save every other raman seasoning packet for use as bouillon.
2 Raman alfredo, make raman as directed but skip the seasoning packet, drain the water and add a few spoonfuls of alfredo sauce, you can even add some frozen broccoli or peas and canned chicken if you've got it. Hit it with some bottled parmasan cheese and some black pepper.
3 Struggle jambalaya, cook some rice and add a can of diced tomatoes and chilies, a can of beans, and a can of mackerel. You can skip the mackerel for rice and beans or use seasoned spanish rice or yellow rice. You can also saute some frozen peppers and onions in the pan before adding the rice for more vegetables.
4 Fish cakes, take some canned mackerel, put it on a plate and split it down the middle to scoop out the bones, put the mackerel in a bowl and add breadcrumbs, an egg and whatever savory seasonings you have on hand, oregano, Italian seasoning, garlic powder or anything like that and half a diced onion if you've got it. Form into little cakes and fry in a pan with about a quarter inch of oil. Keep your cakes very small so that they don't break apart when you go to flip them, I like to use a pair of spoons to form mine.
5 Lentils, cook lentils as directed on the bag and add whatever savory seasonings you have, this is a good time to use those saved raman seasoning packets. Add whatever vegetables you have to a lentil soup like carrots, onions, potatoes, cabbage or canned tomatoes. Add some olive oil if you've got it. You can add rice to your lentils as both have similar cooking times or substitute split peas.
6 Roast chickpeas, drain a can of chickpeas or drain some dried chickpeas you've soaked overnight and toss them with some olive oil, salt, and seasonings like garlic powder, cumin, italian seasoning or taco seasoning, spread out on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for about 45 minutes. This was a cheap food eaten by the poor in ancient Rome.
7 Vegetable soup, for this one you're going to need some fresh vegetables, chop up an onion and a carrot or two and a rib or two of celery if you have it and put them in boiling water, wait about 15 minutes and add a chopped tomato and if you've got it a bell pepper, add a few glugs of white wine, struggle tip, cooking wine from the international aisle costs way less then wine from the wine aisle, wait 15 more minutes and add some chopped kale or cabbage and if you have it some frozen peas, wait 15 more minutes and add some fresh chopped garlic at the end and some herbs and salt. Put it in a bowl and drizzle in some raw olive oil before surving.This soup is healthy and delicious without any bouillon or broth, you could add some potatoes, rice, barley, split peas or lentils at the beginning to make it hardy.
8 This one isn't so much a recipe as a tip, struggle vegetable gardening, get a pot and a bag of soil from dollar tree for 1.25 each, plant those cheap 25 cent seed packets you see a dollar tree, I've gotten great carrots, turnips, kale and green beans from dollar tree seeds. Also look for community gardens in your area for more garden space. You can also plant the root ends of green onions and they'll regrow so you can have a renewable supply of green onions for your raman noodles.
I would sleep for 14 hours a day and wake up at 2pm so i could skip a meal and save me my $2. Life is hard

I remember doing this thing that's a norm in Japan. Steamed rice and you simply mix a raw egg in the rice and let the rice heat up the egg. Throw soy sauce in for flavor. BOY was I CLOWNED. But it was cheap and it helped me through tougher times.

Coming back to this video for the third time and hearing Tony’s story really just let’s you appreciate what you have and feel for those who aren’t as blessed. Growing up, I don't think I even realized I was eating "struggle" food. You just ate what was in the house. Period. Sometimes it was bologna with no bread, canned corn by itself, drank a few cups of some sugary koolaid and you were good.

P0k3D0nd3M4cG yea my grandma makes these things called corn cakes (basically a pancake with corn) and they're actually pretty damn good. The corn add like an extra sweet taste to it. Just some recipe she's had for years that she make every once and a while.
