The Seiko SFP608 is by far the closest to the Cartier Tank. Simple and clean, no big solar branding or shadow stripes on the face as seen on the Seiko SUP880
I have the Seiko SUP880 and I absolutely love it. It's a neat little watch that definitely works well as a dress watch. Super classy looking, especially for the price.
Your must - Cartier is beautiful. The mixed colored metal are gorgeous. I love the vintage feel it has since the pleated gold layer is slightly fading off. I managed to buy myself a classic small original Cartier tank solo after long budget calculation a few days ago. How beautiful is this little object. I’m always taking a second to look at it, feel the metal weight, the quality smell.....all the little details. What a pleasure. Yet of course, far from the affordable watches you have found here. Thank you for your expertise.
Nothing can replace a Cartier Tank, especially the classic dial tank. It’s a watch that has more iconic presence than all watches in existence. When you see a Cartier tank, you immediately recognize it. Even people that are not into watches recognize it and that’s the power of this watch. To transcend out of the watch realm and still be recognized.
I think the "power of the watch" is extremely subjective. I dont care if other recognize what is the watch that I am wearing. So to me, that is absolutely powerless aspect. I still dont understand what's the point of having other people recognizing your watch
Thank you for this video. I just found the watch I was looking for for years and I discovered Frederique Constant, in the dual-tone stainless steel I had searched for so long.. Just bit the bullet and bought it immediately. Thanks again!
Casio make a few very affordable ones. I almost went with the Zomo Adore but pulled the trigger on the SUP880. Just felt the size was more similar to tank....wish they had a silver version though. Gold is not my thing but it's growing on me.
Same here! I share the same fetich for rectangular wristwatches. I went for a Solar Seiko Tank Homage SUP 880 so as not to break the bank. I've been quite happy about it so far.
I tried on a Bulova tank a few weeks ago, and it was so lovely on my wrist. Loving the leather strap. Unfortunately, it had an open heart I didn't care for. But their Frank Sinatra line seems to be quite popular, and more affordable.
How about any of the Dreyfuss or Rotary tanks? The Dreyfusz are all quartz models whereas Rotary automatic and quartz models are available. I have built, what I think to be, quite a nice collection of both. Keep doing what you do. I enjoy your upbeat enthusiasm!
another alternative.... Casio Eco Drive, all black option instead of the Seiko SUP880 is the Citizen Axiom Black Dial Leather Strap Men's Watch BL6005-01E. 29 mm x 26 mm black ion-plated stainless steel case with a black dial and a mineral crystal. around $120.
I think the best deals for this type of watch would come from the vintage market, which you mentioned. I like the Bulovas and Waltham's in the square style. Waltham's can be picked up for next to nothing.
I do have that Tissot TXL chrono with a silver/white face. I was lucky enough to get one as they are a bit scarce now. The lug width is 16 mm so you will have to carefully trim leather straps to fit it. I hate the metal bracelet. It is too stiff. It is quartz (doesn't bother me) but is is very well-made and wears like a champ on the wrist. A bit of a nod to the Cartier tank but more versatile with 100 meters of water resistance. Sapphire crystal too. I love mine and will never sell it.
I like the Square and Rectangular Watches also!nnI have 8 tank Watches. Citizen, Hamilton, Seiko, Bulovas, Casios, Rado, and others!! They are so very elegant and classy looking!
Super informative post! So these companies you listed would have the women’s version of the Tank watch?? The Tank seems to be the watch of choice that Princess Diana wore and current royal ladies. I LOVE the shape and classic style. Please let us girls in on you vast knowledge!!!
I got an old hamilton from ebay which "needed a new battery" per the seller 🤣..it was a 1950's tank style hamilton (although not a USA Made one, Swiss but still very cool)
The Seiko 880 for me looks great I just wish it was not gold and the fact it says SOLAR in a font far too big. The real winner is the Frederique Constant which looks even nicer than the Cartier for me. Sorry mate. I like the Jean Richard Grand TV Screen,, a real beauty.
Try the Rotary Cambridge GS05280/01. Not only it looks better, but also comes in two variants: silver or gold. Link to their official site: www.rotarywatches.com/en/the-rotary-collection/timepieces-watches/gs05280-01
Great video! I'd say add the Breda Virgil! It's a little smaller but looks very classy without being an exact homage. A little o. The smaller side but very affordable and looks much more expensive than it is!
Since there was that Seiko sup896,I think my watch is a decent tank alternative, the CITIZEN BM 6788-05A, textured dial, rose gold case and hands (of steel of course),a blue seconds hand, it's discontinued, so it's rare...It set me back 12000 INR which is like 200$ There's also a CITIZEN BM6782-01B, which I think is a good alternative.
He left one out; the seiko solar sup880 has a new addition that is identical but it comes in silver and does not have the word Solar. It looks awesome! He also left out hamilton
I bought an Oris Rectangular, reference 561-7657-4034LS, which retails for $1800, but I found it on Amazon for $471. It fulfilled my wish for a rectangular dress watch.
What about my CITIZEN Stiletto EcoDrive? Thinner than most, despite the solar movement. I also have a ROTARY Art Deco Look tank with a pink dial and subsidiary seconds, Looks great and as Quartz very inexpensive at £40 new. Came in either nickel or gold plated steel case on a leather strap.
I found my perfect tank hommage in the citizen stiletto AR1000. 4,4mm thin ecodrive watch with a sapphire crystal. Incredible. Very similar to the Seiko sup880
Hi Jory - Do you know the Korean gentlemen (Jeff) on Hill Street who seems to always have pre-owned Cartier Tanks. He's been there over 30 years, I purchased my first Cartier (Must, all black dial) from him back in '82 (new, $400). Corum and Tiffany did decent homages, but of course higher price level. Good tip as to going vintage, I have a Lord Elgin rectangular, which is a beauty. Many of the vintage pieces have GF cases or even solid gold. As you are aware, it's important to upgrade the leather to add to the elegance of a piece or in the case of Cartier to go genuine. Best Regards, JP
Hey Jory...I picked up a Seiko 7N89-OADO. I’ve looked for some info on this watch to no avail. Any suggestions on getting some info. such as when it was made. The gentleman I purchased it from said it was his dad’s. Thanks for ALL the great vids. Love the channel. Ed
I'm thinking of buying an Eriksen rectangular man's watch from Etsy at approx. $57.00 The company is based in the UK and ships around the world. Is this watch the real thing or is it paste? From all appearances, it looks like a retro watch from the 1930s or 40s.
A friend of my dad found a tank solo in one of those cheap containers and because it didn’t run he sold it to me for like $650 and Ingot it running for like 100 with my local watchmaker
3 year update: You’ll hate me for this, but Fossil has released their newer model “Architect” which is basically their continuation of the “Arkitekt” line. It’s very sleek, and certainly pays tribute to Cartier’s Tank. Now I have the Seiko solar watch on my radar 😬
So true what you say about holding value... I lost my cartier tank (literally dropped it in the driveway accidentally) and was looking at buying a second hand watch. was pretty shocked at how cheap they were R54k new and R18-30k secondhand?? The biggest problem of course was doing all the checks for authenticity but I had that waxed... And it irritates me that they destroy the watches they have in surplus in order to keep the prices up. Insurance company regulations are ridiculous, like you literally have to keep it in the safe they want when you take it off for gym etc. Too much stress so I'm definitely in the market for a watch with a great classic design like the tank francaise without the price and heartache if it gets lost or stolen.
Titan Nebula has three to four watches that are square/ rectangle and priced around 1000 USD. While, yes, they are quartz but make it up with the 18kt gold case.
There is a range from ORIS (one being 01 561 7692 4031, HT750). I would be interested to see you review an example. They look nice AND some are well under 1000 bucks Thanks
Sir, it is hard to take you seriously when you wear those silly T-shirts. May I suggest you wear a black or blue long sleeve Ralph Loren Polo shirt? People would recognize the quality in your wardrobe and assume they are getting quality information. You might want to consider decluttering your background as well. And finally, I am glad you included the Hamilton watch in your recommendations.
Jory, if you like rectangular watches (not really square per se), do you like the Reverso? I do... Anyway, I viewed the Seiko on Amazon awhile back and thought what a great homage to the Tank. I thought it the closest in appearance. So that would get my first vote. Now I am a fan of FC after viewing your moon phase watch so long ago and I bought the moon phase with gold plate, so if I was into rectangular watches I'd give FC a shot. Now I've seen your facebook page for weight lifting. You are "not a small man!" and well built I might add (I did love your hair back then :-) ), but don't you find the Tank a bit small for you?
I have this "cartier tank" look alike, its a Seiko SJA303P powered by a calibre V701 quartz movement but idk ive searched the exact series number but nothing shows up. I bought it for around 100 USD, asking for a friend here 😂
If you got the Tissot too, like me. I say good for you! The bracelet is too stiff but if you carefully trim a leather strap for it is is superb! It is quartz but I don't care. I love mine and it is becoming a scarce watch. Very well made. I hope you enjoy yours. as I enjoy mine. Excellent BANG for the buck if you are lucky enough to get one now.
Hi Jory, Would you have any budget versions of the Lange 1 / Glashutte Original PanoMaticLunar, or the watch style of where each component, eg seconds, power reserve, moonphase, date all in its individualised compartments and not located on a larger dial as subdials? Kind Regards.
Jory, I have a question that is unrelated to your video today. Sorry. I have an opportunity to preorder a Ball watch. I want a tritium watch in my collection and I am not impressed with Luminox or Marathon watches. Not a Diver type watch man. What do you think of the Ball Railroad Watch Co. and their watches? Thanks.
I think Jory has the best RUclips watch channel Mark. I to wish he would review Ball watches. I have two and they are some of my favorite watches. I love they way you can read them in the dark. I think Ball watches are very high quality nipping at the heels of much more expensive 4 or 5 thousand dollar watches for half the price. I wish Rolex would use tritium. My very first watch was a Cartier Tank when I was young. Back then the Cartier Tank's were not as expensive.
David Markarian: I agree. This channel doesn't try to sell you anything like Frederico does now. I really dislike that. That's like a commercial at the movies! TGV is mostly high end. but he does have his good vids. Jory just gives his opinion. It's up to you to agree or disagree. And no one, I mean no one entertains like Jory. I do look forward to his videos. I just wish someone would hero/defend the Citizen watch brand as Jory does Seiko though. I also wish Rolex would use tritium tubes too. I think they are waiting for the tubes to last longer than 25 years tho.
Great video thank you so much - but - you might want to check your backgrounds in future...... sorry but (and I hope you'll see the funny side), you look like you're wearing a halo or tiara in this one 😂
The Seiko SFP608 is by far the closest to the Cartier Tank. Simple and clean, no big solar branding or shadow stripes on the face as seen on the Seiko SUP880
The women's one?
I have the Seiko SUP880 and I absolutely love it. It's a neat little watch that definitely works well as a dress watch. Super classy looking, especially for the price.
Bought the wife a SUP880 last time you showcased it. She loves it. Solar was a winner. We swapped out the strap and that watch pops now.

Hamilton Boulton now has a mechanical h50 movement version 😊
Love the Seiko Sup880. I've owned a Pulsar 'tank' watch for 20 years and love it.

I would say the Baume and Mercier Hampton used or the Oris Rectangular new, both under a USD$ 1,000.
TheBithen00 I would agree with you about the Baume and Mercier Hampton. It is very similar to the Tank Francaise.
I think the best deals for this type of watch would come from the vintage market, which you mentioned. I like the Bulovas and Waltham's in the square style. Waltham's can be picked up for next to nothing.

Kristin Becks +1 on women’s options. Would love a real one But will settle for a dupe in the meantime.
longines dolce vita??
I got an old hamilton from ebay which "needed a new battery" per the seller 🤣..it was a 1950's tank style hamilton (although not a USA Made one, Swiss but still very cool)

Oris makes a couple Tankish watches too, for under $1000
they are sweet
A bit thicker, but I am eyeing the moonphase...
I have one. Quite heavy.
what do you think of wearing a regular watch and a smart watch (like an apple watch)
What about my CITIZEN Stiletto EcoDrive? Thinner than most, despite the solar movement.
I also have a ROTARY Art Deco Look tank with a pink dial and subsidiary seconds, Looks great and as Quartz very inexpensive at £40 new. Came in either nickel or gold plated steel case on a leather strap.

any watches similar to Panerai around the same price as the ones in this video that you recommend?
