  • www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulk-re... Today on BRStv we are going to show how quick and easy it is to install a RO/DI system for use with your reef aquarium. It is super easy and basically anyone who can start a saltwater tank can set one of these up as well.

    Very helpful video as usual, BRSTV. I thought RO/DI units were way more complicated and had never bought one even after years in the hobby. Ordered a BRS 4 stage unit and had it mounted under the laundry room sink in minutes. Very happy with the build quality of the finish. Thanks for the help. No more trips for water!

    @ 4:08 in the video, Brute trash cans are not for food/potable water storage, yes it specifically says "Not for food storage" @ webstores. Aside that, best video on the web I've seen on RO install. Also BRS has some of the best products around. This should be a reference on how to use the KISS method. Thanks BRS! :)

    So, does stopping the outlet hose with a float valve, ball valve, etc. cause any damage to the filters/membranes of the RODI unit or cause it to fail/wear out faster?

  • @pdreef3123

    Do you need to install a backflow preventer also when you plumb it into your water line?

  • @Dan_wiles
    @Dan_wiles 4 года назад +9

    You should do an updated video that includes how to actually plumb it off hard copper piping. Anyone can attach it to an existing tap or hose line.

    • @VikingsFan27
      @VikingsFan27 3 года назад +2

      Did you ever figure out how to plumb it to copper? I can tell you that the easiest way is to buy a sharkbite to 1/4" compression tee with shut off valve. You just cut out 2 inches of copper pipe and slide the sharkbite fitting on, and then add your 1/4" ro line to the compression end. That is how I did mine. Start to finish it was 10min and done. If you don't like sharbite or don't trust them (some people dont) they sell the same thing in a sweat version, you will just have to solder it inplace. I would never use a saddle valve because there is only a small strip of rubber that prevents it from leaking and you will forever have a pin hole in your pipe. I am sure you have it done by now but if you have any questions let me know.

    Hi, after I use my RODI unit there is still water left in all the canisters like the DI canister. Do I have to drain these out by taking the unit apart if I'm not using the unit for another 1-2 weeks? Thanks.

  • @mattmilner9
    @mattmilner9 8 лет назад

    Hi, I'm trying to create a set up similar to the one you have in the furnace room. I like how you have the float valves to stop overflow on the bins, however i worry that once these raise, the RODI unit is still being fed but directing the water straight to drain. Do you have/recommend any system that would also cut off the supply or block the waste pipe when both floats are raised? I ask as I would like to produce the water over night, however I don't want to run my tap all night and end up with a massive water bill :). Any help would be much appreciated.

    The 3 switch TDS meter came with my RO/DI kit (on the DI) part. it was prewired. The DI kit has an in and out...I hooked up the RO unit to the IN, then the OUT is the blue tubing to collect water, right? When I check the TDS meter, settings 1 and 2 show 0 TDS, but switch 3, the out, shows 8 TDS. The unit is new and I've run it only fro about 3-5 hours including the 1 hour of waste at the beginning. ANy ideas?

    I bought a used system for my aquaponic setup, but it came with a tank. I was under the impression that the tank is necessary to provide back pressure. are you saying that I could use it as it is by just letting the water from the blue line go straight into my fishank?

    I only use my system for drinking. My brother uses his for his fish tanks and drinking. His water is at 0-1ppm, and mine is at 19-21. His ice cubes are clear! Mine are almost.. I was thinking of getting a DI, I have a PH filter and a UV. Would it be best to install the DI before the PH and UV, after or does it matter? I've read a couple places that it's best to have UV at the very end. Is that true even with DI? Or should I just leave the DI out all together? Thanks for any input.

    BulkReefSupplyCom - Interesting and now I can buy one with confidence. Note, in my municipality in California and here in Washington state too (where I now live) the language is similar: "Never drink water or use for cooking, water from the 'hot' tap. This is because only the water from the cold tap is properly filtered to make the water potable. Likewise, never drink water from or use for cooking, water from the bathroom or outside taps for the same reason. Only the cold side, kitchen faucet is a suitable suitable source of potable drinking water."
    However, it sounds from your reply this is not a concern. Question, can both the fish and we humans drink the RODI water? I'd install mine in a kitchen.

    Hey BRS, I live in South St. Paul, I have high tds and high ph coming out of the tap. My question is what ro-di system should I be installing? Do I need to go all in with the 7 stage because of the high capacity resin filters? 9r can I get by with less? I have a 75 and 120 reef tanks.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 года назад +1

      Double check if your municipality used chlorines or chlorine as a disinfectant. If it's Chloramines, you'll definitely want an RO system with at least two carbon blocks. Basically anything from a BRS 5 stage or larger. I do like the 7 stage the most out of all of the units we sell because you can change out the anion resin independently from the cation resin. Since most people will go through Anion resin much much more quickly than the Cation, separating these out will end up saving you money in the long run. I also like the 7 stage system because you'll know you're covered for just about anything without looking at a single city water report 🙂

    I have the brute can with the float valve setup with the booster pump and the automatic sensor it comes with. It automatically turns on when the float valve detects low water like you show in this video. Will the sitting water in between setups contaminate my water ? How am I supposed to flush the system automatically? Or should I jus flush it when I know the rodi is going to turn on after I’m doing a water change so that sitting water doesn’t get into my brute ?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 года назад

      If we're understanding you correctly, no the water sitting in the canisters between batches of water is not an issue. You can either flush manually as you discussed, otherwise, you could consider adding an auto flush kit like this one: www.bulkreefsupply.com/75-gpd-auto-flush-flow-kit-aquatec-bundle.html

You say there is an auto shut off on this unit, but I am not sure where it is or exactly how I will connect it. I am assuming the float switch will connect directly to this auto shut off? I'm planning to get the 6-stage system with the water saver and to hook it up in my basement. I have a couple questions I'm hoping you can help with:
    1) Does it help/hurt to hook up the system to water that has gone through a home water softener?
    2) In lots of places they talk about filters being most efficient at a temp of ~70F. Yet it looks like this is always hooked into a cold water line. Is that OK?
    3) With the auto shut off system included in the 6-stage system with the water saver, can you confirm that it shuts off all input into the system? I plan to set up my reservoir system so that it runs automatically without any turning off/on of valves.
    Thanks - love your videos. I've been slowly working my way toward jumping into a reef system and your videos have helped a lot.

      The hole for the drain should be drilled above the P-trap, not below. Assuming you're using the Drain Saddle Clamp, you'll need a 1/4" hole for the 1/4" drain saddle clamp or a 3/8" hole if you're using the 3/8" drain saddle clamp.

    @Slacking02 I personally have my waste line fed into my 100gal fresh water tank/pond. I have an electric float switch when triggered (when the tank is full enuf) turns on a pump that pumps the fresh water tank water out to the garden. So the fresh water tanks gets filtered/carbonized water constantly and tank water expelled when full.

      We don't have a newer video quite like this one, but installation is pretty easy. In BRS brand RODI systems, water enters the system from the left side (red RO tubing). A booster pump is usually installed before the system entirely. Randy has a newer how-to video on installing a booster pump at the link below if you wanted to check that out 🙂

    • @BRStv

      If you're using the water for a reef tank, we'll usually use Brute trashcans, 5 gallon buckets, or larger Norwesco tanks. If you're installing it for drinking water, we'll use a small pressurized tank, normally located under the sink with the RO system.

    for someone with a waterbox 20 gallon tank, what would you recommend for a RO/DI system?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      It's less about the aquarium and more about the source water that you're trying to filter. If you're on city water with Chloramines, the 5 stage system or larger is best as it has two carbon blocks. If you're on well water or city water that uses chlorine, the 4 stage system will work in most cases.

    How long does it take to produce 25 ltrs of RODI

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      It depends on the size membrane you're working with, but 75 GPD is most common. Converted to Liters, that would be 340 liters per day. So, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to make 25 liters, depending on your water pressure.

      He said its the exact same as the under the sink install. You probably just have to use the copper tubing route from the sink which pierces the hole in the copper tubing.
