- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- Season 2, episode 27 is here. Dominic, Connor, Erica, and Mark have an awesome conversation with the brilliant showrunner, writer, director - Terry Matalas. Terry worked on Enterprise, Voyager, Picard and beloved sci-fi cult classic 12 Monkeys.
We discuss Matalas' rise through the industry from production assistant to fan-favorite "savior of Trek" Showrunner for Picard season 3. We discuss his life, the current SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike, owning a DeLorean, and much more. Erica gets some fan questions in, we play a round of Star Trek Trivia, and we subject Terry to being "Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.” If you like Star Trek, this is a fun one. So grab your mimosa and get ready for some laughs.

Note to Paramount, Kurtzman's deal is over in 2 years. Put this guy in charge.
I can think of nobody better
Kurtzman has the creative ability of a piece of wet bread thrown against a window.
Said the entire fan base.
So say we all. I know, wrong franchise. But so right!!!!
God no…
Did Star Trek Proud with Season 3 of Picard. 💯 Comng from a 40 plus year star trek fan
All I can say is, thank you Terry. You brought Star Trek back to what it should be, with Picard season 3. PLEASE let Star Trek Legacy be a thing.
He's working on the outline right now
….your interpretation of ‘writing a little something’?
@@autecheee exactly, you caught that too. Also, even though they brought it up as a fan question they didn't really talk about it. And Nerdrotic mentioned recently on one of his videos he bumped into TM at a Con and he asked him - he got a smile/wink
A non-intellectual bullet point list of old Trek, with zero meaning? No, that’s not what Star Trek is.
Name an episode that was as good as DS9…
"Excuse me, Sir? Do you have a minute to talk about our Lord and Savior Terry Matalas?"
Thank you so much for this episode! And thank you Terry for giving us this wonderful season of real Star Trek!
God please. STOP. Mindlessly making someone a Messiah, whatever the subject is silly. You've seen Picard season 3 and you liked it but it WASN'T this miraculous thing. You were so devoid of Star Trek you liked that you're going way overboard about this Star Trek you liked. That's it. It's basic.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka Whew. Take your meds. You sound like someone pissed in your Fruit Loops.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka"STOP LIKING THINGS MORE THAN I DID."
I found the story inconsistent, the violence and swearing distasteful. Also seeing another character smoking, had me wondering if Picard had received sponsorship from the smoking lobby, didn't the chap with the beard from last season also smoke? That said S3 was vastly superior to STD albeit I gave up watching that after a couple of seasons.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka Sounds to me like someone needs Terry in their life. Matalas be with you, brother.
they need to put terry matalas in charge of all things star trek. no offence to those in charge at the minute, but terry is clearly perfect for the job. great episode as usual. thanks to you all
All offense to those in charge...they fucking ruined Trek and dumbed it down.
@@Welcome2TheInternetAmen!
Terry literally saved the Star Trek brand. All hail Terry Trek!
If only, Kurtzman is still running it to the ground
To be fair Strange New Worlds had already produced the first great season of Nu (live action) Trek.
Your deluded if you think we will get more of what he did without massive changes and wokeness added. At best it will just end up being yet another SNW with a different crew, at worse it will be a bait and switch halfway through, and be yet more SNW after pretending to be TNG style Trek first.
@@tonep3168I hate to break it to you, but Star Trek has been woke since 1966. It's what Star Trek is all about.
@@mikesimon1504 Nah. Trek didn't embrace third wave feminism till Discovery.
Terry Matalas should be in charge of all new Trek.
Not SNW.
@@nakazonegamestreaming896 I cant argue with that. SNW has been really good.
At least the new Star Trek shows.
@@stevehoover6073 s2e4 was poop, rest been great tho
Y'all are nuts. SNW has been more of the same from STD. They have made Pike a weak man, depending on all his female subordinates to give him strength. And Dr, M'Tembe (whom was the only decent character before last week) is now a murderer hiding in the crew and using his (frankly justified) hatred as reason to conceal not only his past actions but his recent ones as well.
SNW, STD, and S1-2 of STP are NOT the way forward.
The more i see this guy and his work, the more i admire him. Thank you Terry for bringing back hope for trek fans, and showing a new generation of fans what real trek values are.
I met Terry 25 years ago and worked with him when I was on Voyager season 7! He is fantastically nice and talented! I'm very happy for his success.
What did you do on season 7?
@@startrekmaniac1701
_Shhhh,_ you're not supposed to ask the obvious question that didn't get answered lol.
@@Chalor. why not?
@@startrekmaniac1701 I was a production assistant. But from 1997 to 2000, I worked in the Paramount mailroom. I was fortunate to have all of the writers and producers and staff of both Deep Space Nine and Voyager on my mail route. That's where I met Terry. He was in the Cooper Building second floor. The very same office where I eventually started working in June of 2000.
Well but Voyager 7 was amazing. STP3 was not. And it's a little shocking to me why you can't tell the difference.
I don't want to say that every episode of season 6 and 7 were perfect, but at least they tried to have episodes that showed you things with character development instead of people telling you things.
It's a difference between good writing and bad.
Child's Play is better than anything with Picard and his son and Crusher.
Unity is better than the STP 3 finale.
And where is Muse? Where is the episode that does something completely original and new and interesting? Instead we're getting the same sets, recycled villains, and story for 10 episodes.
And what about the cinematography? Most of the episodes look exactly the same. Same dark, dreary interiors.
Hey everyone! Connor here. Thank you for your patience!!😅🖖
He needs to be in charge of everything Trek. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever appreciate Picard as much as I wanted to, and Mr. Matalas came in with the save and made that possible. Thank You, Terry!
Hey RUclips Algorithm. All folks who watch Star Trek related content on this platform should be getting The Shuttlepod Show in their suggested feed! This by far the best, most in depth interview of Terry Matalas available, and Dominic, Connor, Erica, and Mark do this for EVERY guest.
Excellent performance by Mr. Trinneer and Mr. Keating. It's always a pleasure to see them. I enjoyed the direction of Mr. Cartier. And the background from Mr. Matalas. Thank you all for an hour+ of RUclips.
I recently watched 12 Monkeys for the first time based on Jonathan Frakes’ recommendation when he was on with you guys. It is one of the best sci-fi shows I have ever watched. Definitely the best time travel show. Such a perfect example of what a show can look like and accomplish when it has a well thought out plan. Thank you, Terry.
And it has a good ending, so rare for a TV series.
@@ThreadBomb Very true. The reason I never watched it in the first place was because it was on syfy. After getting burned by the early cancellation of several shows I liked I decided to stop watching any new show on that network.
It's now on my watch list
What he, the cast & crew were able to achieve in S3 of Picard is nothing short of amazing.
Stockholm syndrome.
Jesus, come back to Earth, it was average, with terrible writing, the only thing that was good about it was that the characters acted like their characters. The story was terrible, Borg, Changelings, old Enterprise? It was like a bunch of writers who knew nothing about Star Trek got a bullet list of things they didn’t understand to include in the show.
@@aldunlop4622 I don't mind seeing enterprise-d again I go in there in VR occasionally. But the whole rest of it was too dark in subject matter and lighting. The save the universe trope is getting old!
Freaking amazing interview. I thought star trek died with discovery but thanks to Picard season 3, lower decks, and now strange new worlds. Star Trek finally feels like Star Trek again. Thank you Terry for saving my childhood franchise.
Are you a bot? SNW S2 is awful.
Its great that you all got Terry Matalas.. but unfortunately everyone was so excited and nobody ever let the man speak.. the entire interview was like rapid fire chaos.. nobody was steering the interview.. everyone just kept throwing random questions and the guy.. the poor man could hardly keep up and often he didn't even know what was actually being asked.. the reason why I really enjoy The Shuttlepod Show is because is give the person being interviewed time to tell stories.. you let them get into their lives in a long form setting.. i love you all and really enjoy the show and appreciate what you all do for the Star Trek family..
Live long and prosper..
Connor, feel better soon! I've had that moment twice, lifting couches one minute, on the ground the next over the dumbest little thing.
I'm glad Terry asked the question about Phil Collins/Genesis (although he didn't get an answer), because I've been wondering that for the longest time.
Definitely looking forward to whatever Terry does after the strike is over.
Thank you for placing terry on awesome interview. Also @dominic keating sorry for being disabled and not being able to afford patrion. I understand us free loaders are enjoying your free content. I would love to become a patrion supporter but its not in the cards currently. But i will say this, I appreciate all of your hard work and all of you. Thank you for the kind words!!
SO THANKFUL FOR THIS PROGRAM, & TO EVERYONE ASSOCIATED! 💓 💖 💗
Thank you!
Really nice. Like a family reunion. WE WANT ENTERPRISE BACK for a proper ending!!!! ❤
Trip’s not dead!
YES WE DO! 🥰✌️
Indeed. Although it's unlikely Jolene Blalock would come out of retirement. Any kind of proper send-off would be better than what we got.

Show runner episodes are so full of information! I love getting a look behind the veil!
Right!?
I know! I never cease to be amazed by what I learn from this show.
What Nicholas Meyer did to rejuvenate classic Trek, Terry did to TNG. He's done something truly extraordinary. And Lordy, he's lost some weight & is looking fantastic! I rly hope they give him a shot at continuing ST:LEGACY.
All Hail(ing) Terry. The man who brought Trek back from the brink.
what a great episode. I really enjoyed listening to Terry Matalas
Thank you for this wonderful episode, it was a blast! Terry Matalas, it'd be great if you could bring back the crew of the Enterprise, they deserve a continuation, they were getting soooo good! 🖖
Terry, you've provided the medicine for all of us ailing Trekkies/Trekkers. Thank you!
And thank you Shuttlepod for your fun and insightful content!
Great episode, Terry is the future of Star Trek with his enthusiasm for this most fantastic franchise. When he mentioned Enterprise and the loose ends I was totally go smacked and started imagining so many scenarios for a few mini series episodes. I have started reading-reading all of my Enterprise novels and the episodes Terry could do are fantastic ( by the wat Trip does not die 😂😮). Cheers all and keep up the great work, 🍷🍷 Ed from South Australia
Thanks for episode Terry. Glad someone talked to Sir Pat and got that series squared away. It gave the TNG a proper send off that everyone was happy with. Im ready for some Legacy and seeing some more of the old Star Trek actors. Throw the Shuttle Pod Crew a bone after how Enterprise ended.
Connor and Dom, Enterprise was the first Trek show I ever watched, and my dad and I watched every season together and I am thankful you have this podcast. Your interview with Levar Burton was just amazing. I hope the studios get it together so y'all can get back to work!
Can confirm, I went to school on the Unviersal Lot, my apartment was on Forest Lawn Drive, up the hill in what was called Oakwood Apartments (I think it's called Avalon now).
Those trees on the corner of Barham Blvd and Forest Lawn Dr, were never cut the entire year I went to school there, and the same drive for another four years between my DP and I's places, was past that Unviersal Studios entry point. Those trees were never once cut.
What a great interview! I'm one of the many wanting something to continue the Enterprise story. Movie or short series would be great. And, Phil Collins with Genesis is a great choice!
I have mostly kept my thoughts on this guy to myself. This edition of Shuttlepod has put me in touch with his humanity. I'm never going to be one of the biggest fans of any of the sort of things he works on. I get his social media approach now though, and I'm glad he's out there doing what he does. Solid grip and experience with relevant fundamentals, but what he's really good at is merging ingredients together to make a good product. And he does it without disrespecting some elements he may not understand or have experience with. Heck. He's probably even respectful to things he doesn't even actually like, when appropriate.
Terry Matalas is brilliant. One of my close friends was a classmate of Terrys when he was at Emerson. Now both are successful in film. Terry saved "Picard" but also moved the entire franchise back on track by association. Terry is the right guy because when it comes to Trek, he truly gets it. Roddenberry is looking down on Terry and smiling.
We want a Romulan War movie featuring the NX-01 Enterprise refit!
And his planned death was a secret recruiting tactic conceived by Reed
This was another great, great episode. Terry Matales is awesome. His love for Star Trek is so evident. I loved hearing his story!!
Has to be one of the most entertaining episodes so far. Brilliant fun to watch. Paramount/CBS need to give this man a huge contract & have him steer their greatest IP to future glory. All hail The Matalas
The man needs to direct a big budget trek movie . Great show guys I look forward to the next one .
He already did. It was called Picard Season 3. And it was crap.
After Picard, Terry Matalas is like Trek god to me now.
As a long time fan of Trek - I had to play catch up about Terry's bio. Wow! Stunning talent & such a good entertainer. Thank's for doing this show. What an absolute pleasure to watch.
Love this guy... I was 100% sure that Star Trek was dead after that atrocity called Picard season 2 - I almost wanted it to be dead. And this guy brought Star Trek back to life. Incredible!
Nice work to The Shuttlepod Show for another great episode! Keep up the great work! 🎉
Thank you!
Brilliant 👌👌👏👏. That's wonderful of Shaun/Sean to contribute to the show in that way ❤
Great episode as always. I'm hopeful Legacy will get a green light. Thank you Terry, cast & crew! 🖖
Picard Season 3 is a love letter to Star Trek fans. Thank you Terry. Brilliant work!
It would be amazing if Terry would do to Enterprise what he did for TNG.
I love that Terry is a Phil Collins/Genesis fan, cause same!
I would love them to follow the novels with the Enterprise stories. Tripp is in Section 31 as a Romulan and Reed is a Captain and the next chapter is the Romulan/Federation War! What a show that would be!
After Enterprise went off the air I haven’t been a fan of Trek that came 09 onward. No ill will toward anyone who loves the new Trek. Matalas did something I didn’t think was possible, put out Trek I loved. For the first time since 05 I was able to watch and enjoy Trek with my dad. That is a gift I will cherish. Also once again great job by all with another great interview
🙏🏼✨🖖🏼
Great episode! Was fun to learn that Terry is my age and a December baby, I like to do my research too 😊 Love you guys, your show adds something fun to look forward to on my Sundays ❤
You can tell that Terry's a great guy. That was a wonderful interview. Thanks all. 🖖
This is such a great show. Super comfy.
Thank you!
Loved this episode!! Thank you so much for having him on. This was a treat.
Terry if you read this i loved season 3 of Picard. Thank you. I was not going to watch Picard season 3 after seeing season 2. It was Startrek done right. Make sure you continue the storyline.
If he doesnt get another shot at Trek, he probably could create a fresh IP that we all talk about years from now.
I enjoy it very much. Already Monday here in Germany!🖖🏼🖖🏼💛💛🌻🌻
Loved 12 monkeys!!!!! and Terry did an awesome job with STPICS3..............and ofc, ENT is one of my all time fav series in Trek #TerryTrek
❤ this episode start to finish !!!
Love this show! There’s always an amazing discussion. Super in-depth and interesting peek into the life of some of our favorite actors and producers from the best on Tv
Quote me on that.
I'm a Trek fan - but the sort that will watch all these new episodes out of order, come to love them & then binge watch them all in order. That was my DS9, Enterprise & Voyager pattern, too. Then I usually continue to watch randomly across a decade or so learning to appreciate each episode even more. Having said that - I'm blown away at what Terry brought to the whole franchise. If I had to choose a lone person who was the revival catalyst ... yeah. And this format - where fans can watch actors, directors, writers, etc all talk about the experience....WOW! Thanks guys. This is great.
Love the new camera and aspect ratio!
You could see how disappointed Terry was at missing that Mirror, Mirror question, lol, but with how many hours of Star Trek there are, you end up forgetting more than you realize if you haven't seen them recently. Plus the alcohol upping the difficulty...😆
Came for the Star Trek, stayed for the Genesis / Phil Collins talk.
Wonderful interview- insightful questions and really interesting backstories. Thanks @The Shuttlepod Show ! ❤🖖
Thank you so much for a fabulous episode as usual and he seems like such a down-to-earth guy.
There is no way hat man is actually 48! looks mid-30s! and seems like the nicest man in Hollywood! Great episode guys!
I literally just watched Good Fellas for the first time Monday morning. I now feel "In the know."
This was an amazing episode! It was so cool hearing all this about Terry and the updates from all of you about the strikes.
Very sad to hear about Manny Coto. The Manny Coto season was one of the best Star Trek seasons ever.
Great epsiode folks! Thanks to the hosts, crew, and of course Terry!
Thank you!
I really appreciate what Terry said about endings, especially considering so many showunners find endings so challenging to write.
On another note, as a lifelong RPGer I would love, love, love to see you all play a DnD session. And you couldn't ask for a better DM than Stashwick.
Incredible show. Love it
Thank you!
“There was so much Star Trek in my DNA…” He UNDERSTANDS IT.
That’s exactly why this guy should be the first choice to helm anything Star Trek for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for yet another fun and fascinating discussion! ☄🖖
Loved being a fly on the wall for this episode.
Poor Terry was interrupted so many times when he was telling a good story 😞
Yeah, I wait for a different show where he gets interviewed. This is unbearable.
You'd think they would have learned by now
He does this constantly, always has, it's very impolite to his guests...as for that remark to those not paying for this...unkind to say the least😢
🖖 Thanks Terry!
Thanks again. Getting Terry impressive.
Thank you for another great episode.
I need to figure out a way to get a shirt made that says:

Hahahaha! Funny.
I can hardly wait. 💓😊💓
Thanks, everyone. That was fun!
Great episode with Terry lots of stories and history.
Loved this talk with you guys and Dom, I love you just doing your thing, (that's not sarcasm, i mean that honestly). I really enjoy you guys just chatting with your mates. It's refreshing.
Thank you!
Love 12 Monkeys. Sure wish Terry would have been asked about his Kirk/Picard Easter Eggs from Season 3 of Picard!
This is so great having Terry on the school. I love how he directed the last episode of Picard and gave us a new legacy of Enterprise, NC-1701-G with Captain Seven of Nine in command!
One the best shows! You guys have had a lot of good shows tbough.
Awesome, I am definitely ready for more Terry Trek, I hope Star Trek Legacy gets greenlit soon. Great interview, guys, thank you. 🖖
According to Nerdrotic Terry gave him a nod/wink when he asked him about Legacy at a Con recently
I only hope that in the future, the AI will help, as a tool, for ST writers to consult it for something they are writing will be within cannon or not. Imagine all ST history inputted in software so that everything will make sense and flow correctly when working with new stories.
its nice that the guy running the shows is the biggest fan
Another fantastic episode!!!!! love this show!!! Dominic gets me in stitches 🖖
A wizard based off walter matthau in Hopscotch would be interesting. One of my top 3 Matthau movies
Team/Fam, they rebooted you as Nu Trek. Imagine that insanity. ST:SNW. That's our Universe. That's also why the ramps were off on the Fat-D. EDIT: Doug Drexler was right. ST:Enterprise is the game changer.
This was an awesome chat! Really glad to see ST: Enterprise folks reconnecting, that show is a real gem of the franchise. Was also really glad to see Strange New Worlds gave the series a nice shout recently too.
I've been waiting for this pod! tytyty
Terry reminiscing about the Star Trek movies being a partt of his "summer", well being an Aussie they were a significant part of my winters - fascinating! 'The Wrath of Khan' was significant for me when I first saw it in the cold of winter - made me wonder how seeing it at the height summer & on holidays - would would have had me feeling? Answer: a tad jealous!
Also, I have to write it; imagine 'what if ' Manny Cotto had been given 'Discovery or 'Strange New Worlds' .....imagine what could've been. Vale Mr Cotto.
I look forward to The Shuttlepod Show every week, I enjoy it so much I became a Patron.
YASSSS!
James Callis' portrayal as Maurice Picard and his scenes with Patrick Stewart were some of the best of the series. I'd enjoy watching a young Picard series with James reprising his role as dad - maybe something AI can cobble together in a few years 😱
Dominic was getting a bit emotional I think when Terry was talking about how Enterprise is looked at more favorably now than it was 20 years ago. Im sure that cast felt a little abandoned after the show was cancelled.
This is an AWESOME episode!
